Paul MacLean, born in France and raised in Nova Scotia, and a former Assistant with the Detroit Red Wings will be named the next head coach of the Ottawa Senators. Bob McKenzie has indicated that a formal announcement is expected tomorrow.
It should be made clear that this was certainly not an easy decision for Murray. I mentioned that MacTavish was the favourite at one point and I stand by that. MacT really impressed Murray in his interview and the head coach experience had him among the leaders. Then Kleinendorst went and won a Calder Cup and made Murray's life even more difficult.
In the end Murray chose the guy that he felt was the best fit.
While Murray didn't end up going with the guy with the most head coach experience, he does get a guy that has been at it for a long time. MacLean has spent the last five years in the Red Wings organization working under one of the best in Mike Babcock.
He also spent two season in the Ducks organization and has worked with Murray before.
I'll be honest when I say I don't know a whole lot about what we can expect from MacLean as a coach. I've heard he is a no non-sense type guy but obviously must be good communicator as well. Murray has made it clear that was one of the most important qualities he was looking for in a coach.
There were mixed reaction to each of the candidates discussed during the search but I get the sense that MacLean was the fans choice as well. While I think a lot of that has to do with the mustache, he has also spent a lot of time with a great organization in Detroit and with has worked under one of the league's most respected coaches in Babcock.
Looking forward to seeing him behind the Ottawa bench!
Thanks!
Hopefully this season is all about disproving previous years downfalls. I believe in both Anderson and MacLean!
...aaaaand there it is. I'm surprised it took this long. Question though, was it necessary? Do you feel better?
What do you do for an encore? Do you poke fun at Bryan Murray's cleft palette? Do you make fun of Daniel Alfredsson's sister?
Stay classy.
Man, can't wait for the draft.
From the Ottawa Sun....."The source indicated the formal hiring announcement may come after the Senators also have assistant coaches in place."
Why wait? That can come later.
Would assume MacLean is being given the chance to pick his own staff but we'll see. I'll try to do some digging!
Should be interesting as to who now becomes the assistant coach Cameron or Kleindendorst or someone of Maclean's choosing. Next up the draft. Happy birthday chirp.
Maybe the Sens get to pick one in Kleinendorst... and MacLean gets to pick the other? Maybe a PE Islander not named Cameron?

Quoting SensibleMac:
Everyday is a great day to be a Sens fan.. Cant pick n choose!
Cant wait for 'Duster Night' at SBP.. Hopefully the Sens staff give out free moustaches on opening night to all the fans.. Would be hilarious to see people in the stands.
Go sens go!
Happy birthday SC.
I think you're exactly right. Sure hope they can keep KK within the organization though. He's a bona fide winner.
Read that article, very interesting insight into the man and the coach.
It is really odd that something positive about the Sens comes out of Toronto.
Wow. This is truly an impressive article of MacLean. Didn't know he was as successful as he is.
He's very seasoned for a Head Coaching job. Very glad it's with us.
I look forward to seeing how he performs.
Why rush it, there is no rush to announce it, and Im pretty sure MacLean has an idea who he wants as his assistants, his own people probably.
KK stays in AHL, he hasnt earned his trip to the big league yet.
He has won 1 Calder Cup, in his 10 years at being a HC in various leagues, not much of a winner and if you look at his time with the Lowell Devils (out of playoffs for 3 straight years), their record was pretty awful. I dont get why people say he deserves a spot on the big club.
He hasnt won anything before that Calder Cup. He's finally done something good, dont bring him up right away, lets see what he does with a NHL cast in Bingo.
An excellent hire.
I was originally on the Kirk Muller bandwagon because I thought that Paul MacLean would not be interested in
leaving Detroit.
Bryan Murray continues to impress me with the rebuild.
I believe 'the black terror' is german for whales vagina.
You've thought it. You've been itching to see it. You read it. You respond with a holier than thou attitude. Look at yourself in the mirror terror. You may not have typed it but you were thinking the same thing.
Mental illness and lisp = uncontrollable
drunk driving = controllable
this guy is a douche and deserves no ones attention
He has won at the World Championships in the U18's. He has also coached in the World's with Tortorella & Sullivan.
Terror you already have no ones attention
I didnt see anything about Worlds, and in any case, not much coaching done there.
Im talking about his HC career, hasnt done much, needs to prove it wasnt a fluke.
He has won 1 Calder Cup, in his 10 years at being a HC in various leagues, not much of a winner and if you look at his time with the Lowell Devils (out of playoffs for 3 straight years), their record was pretty awful. I dont get why people say he deserves a spot on the big club.

Not be be unkind, but you should really try reading up on stuff before commenting negatively upon a guy's career.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kurt_Kleinendorst
There goes Tookie with all his negativity once again !!
Trollkie is an expert with inside information. He knows that KK secretly wrote "Kleinendorst was named head coach of USA Hockey's National Team Development Program's Under-18 team for the 2010 season, leading the team to a Gold Medal at the 2010 IIHF U-18 World Hockey Championship." on his wiki page in hopes of boosting his resume when KK was never really said coach.
Don't like getting called out, huh. Fair enough.
I still think you're a loser. :)
And at least I have your attention.
But I can assure you that MacT's manslaughter conviction and subsequent jail time had nothing to do with him not getting this job. So why bring it up? A failed attempt at humour?
Again, stay classy.
Now lets hope Murray can grab Mr. Gabriel Landeskog at the draft. If not I would have no problem pick Mika Z. I really want a power forward on our team. Skill and big hits.
Can't wait for June 24 ... aka the day Lando becomes a SEN!
I have a feeling this guy will be around for a long time!
I agree. While I think Landeskog will be a great player, Strome is the most likely selection.
http://www.mynhldraft.com/2011/NHL-Draft-Profiles/Mark-Scheifele
and I cant wait for the draft!
I really want to know what is in the air in Toronto ... as I definitely want some.
There are actually fans that think that will happen?
That actually blows my mind.
I fail to see why it is so taboo to bring up the fact that Mac T is a criminal. A convicted killer even. You think it is not classy, that is your opinion. Some people share your view. I think it is important in a business that is driven by families to have proper people in positions of authority, even it is merely a supervisory position (coach).
And seriously 'terror', if i wanted the forum to laugh, i'd suggest you pull down your pants.
If BM is looking to grab RNH it was a perfect downplay for it. lol
you have to wonder how much game is involved with what they release or don't release.
And yet you still read it? The blogger was quoting an article from a Toronto newspaper quoting Simmons.
As a poster on that site, I can definitely say the best thing about that site is the discussion. Apart from a select few bloggers (Yost is my fav), the bloggers are good for creating discussion, which is by far and away better than this site (no offense to Chirp as this site is fantastic for a Sens only site).
MacLean is a winner. Nothing to dislike about him that I can find.
Wow, I sit down in front of the tv and a minute later it's 2-0 Boston.
I think we have a game 7.
Leafs players have been having terrific endings to seasons too for the last 5 years. It's the whole season that matters. I'm on a wait and see approach.
No kidding, eh? But it seems to me like he's so awkwardly projected to have a second interview. He's somewhere between 12-14ish on most rankings. Seems to be right in between 6 and 21. I am willing to bet Murray trades up. Zach Phillips would be awesome to take if he's there at 21 as well.
Nothing official from the organization yet. McKenzie has suggested we can expect an announcement tomorrow. I wonder if the fact that the Bruins/Canucks are headed to seven will change that.
Nothing has been announced yet.
Sure hope so.
The way the kid plays is just disgusting.
Could we see the return of lalime???
He bought a house in Ottawa and Maclean use to be his coach.
I wouldnt mind, he is still loved in Ottawa
Happy Birthday CHIRP.
He was not very good in goal last season in relief of Miller... that's why Buffalo brought up Enroth. I really like Patrick as a person... but no to bringing him back.
Yeah, true. We broke up with Lalime for a reason
I mean, its probably too late now but I just wanted to get an idea who the fans most wanted.
MacLean
MacT
Kliensdorst or
Cameron?
I'd say that at least 90% of the comments I've read on here indicate that MacLean is the fans 1st choice.
that's really funny too, because 90% of those 90% have no idea who he is.
In the meantime we have one of the best coaches in the A developing our players and winning cups.
what planet is this?
Thanks for the past year; best wishes for the coming one.
When presented with a list of potential coaches, I and I'm sure many others here, did their do diligence in researching the candidates coaching history. MacLean appears to be a perfect fit for the sens, not that KK wouldn't be as well...I just don't think management could pass up on this rare opportunity to bring in a seasoned coaching vet like MacLean, and a former star player at that. We may not have known much about him a month or so ago but we sure do now, and I couldn't be more excited to see what he will do for the sens next year!
Why did they choose the word "settled"?!!?? I like chosen or hired much better. Implies that we wanted someone else, but had to settle on MacLean....
This is my hope also.
Either that, or stay put and take a falling stock Armia
Although it also seemed odd that they showed their WHL Rankings so who knows?
With their current picks they aren't in contention to take Mcneill anyways. So a trade up must happen in order to take him. You are absolutely right that it is weird they would show so much, but I don't see any harm in it.
If they trade up to get him at 12-14 it will be as the pick is there, and no one will be able to select him prior to them.
Wow I just read that back and was extremely unclear of what I way trying to convey, oh well. haha
Worst case scenario I guess we can wait 100 minutes and find out for ourselves. :cP
Agree. It was the same with RNH. There's no issue with us saying we would want him because we all know he's not there at 6.
I think they would be much more likely to show something that's misdirection. It's not like the other teams around us in the draft aren't watching.
Haven't heard that. Owen Sound coach Mark Reeds is in the mix apparently. Don't think Kleinendorst is in the picture. Murray has done a great job keeping this one covered up. We'll all know soon enough.
Zack Phillips at 21 would be great as well, IMHO.
The only guy who I think was maybe relevant was Dougie Hammilton, but how can you take another dman when a player like Strome or Landeskog has to be on the board at #6
I am afraid that if they do not make KK assistant then we will lose him.
I would chose Hamilton over Strome but not Landeskog, however Landeskog won't be there at 6. I just get the feeling that Hamilton is by far the best Dman in this draft (Yes even better than Larsson). And there's nothing wrong with having 4 young stud defenecemen in your system either.
Just like our players in Bingo, AHL success does not automatically translate to NHL success, KK can stay down there for another year or two and see if he can have the same luck as he did last year...IN STASHE WE TRUST!
Edit: Yes, the Team will be carrying it.
so it is obvious Lidstrom would not come here and I doubt Eaves would come back would Sens benifit from a guy like Draper...don't really know Ericsson or Miller...
Another question...BM has said he wants to land a legit top 6 forward...in terms of UFA's out there do you think that having PM as coach over guys like MacT or KK will help Ottawa's chances of getting that impact forward?
http://video.senators.nhl.com/videocenter/console?catid=616&navid=DL|OTT|home
your welcome
MUCHOS gracias
lmao np
Why not Couturier? He's probably the most NHL ready forward and would immediately fill our second line C. Is the organization themselves interested in him at all?
Thoughts?
I'm big on couturier too, howver I don't think he will be around at 6. But if he is, I think it's a given that the sens take him, unlesss one of the other top 4 forwards are available.
Couturier is not on the radar for the Sens, he wasnt even invited for a visit to Ottawa. Zibanejad is now a possible top 5 pick, this kid came from late 2nd round to a possible top 5 pick!!!
I think if Zibby and Couturier are still there the Sens go with Zibby for sure!
That'd be a good deal for Philly, Edmonton doesn't really need another 1st overall with the amount of picks they've had over the last few seasons, and Philly would shed the cap hit and get RNH signed to a ELC with the max cap hit of $1.35M (I think that's what it is)...Should be interesting to see if that happens!
Foligno?!!? lmao, why?
why does it matter to yu
Couturier is seen in the photos of the sens private workout after the lockout. get informed son.
probably cause he is an important piece to this team going forward, lmao, shut your mouth for one day tookie. thx.
It's starting
Oh hell I dont know, you just have the face of the Franchise and....and...Fo ligno... just seems out of place, maybe he got traded!!!
Easy with the man crush!
everyone knows my man crush is on Condra.
Leave it to Tookie to be a doubter about MacLean.
Hahah doubter, why, cuz I said to ease your man love for him, its ok to say it once or twice but 4 times...
I also im the one who was pushing for him the most, even said it would be him infact.
Im not shocked, I know this guy is good, you seem to be surprised.
Why so vulgar friend?
You all seem to be surprised about MacLean, did you not know who this guy was?
Nice, the immature age comeback line, seems im not the one who needs to grow up, lol.
Now he is trying to be just a bit more of a douche so we will forget about that and he can go back to claiming he is always right.
Don't fall for his tricks.
On another note love the fact Maclean said he wanted to have some meetings with the players to get to know them. Also the comment on playing 200 feet instead of in 100 foot sections. Sounds like a great communicator.
