Binghamton Senators- Calder Cup Champions!

For the first time in 38 years of professional hockey, the city of Binghamton is home to a Champion! The Binghamton Senators continued their dominance on the road in Houston tonight and in the process won the AHL's biggest prize.

Congratulations go out to head coach Kurt Kleinendorst, the BSens players and the entire city of Binghamton, New York. The Binghamton Senators are Calder Cup Champions!

Third period goals from Bobby Butler and BSens Captain Ryan Keller were the difference in this one as the boys from Bingo sensed a chance at history and were not going to miss their opportunity.

Robin Lehner was strong and confident in the Sens net as he has been throughout the playoffs and was named the MVP of the playoffs. When Brust faltered in Round 1, Lehner took the ball and ran with it. The experience he gained this season will go a long way in his development as a star at the NHL level.

With their assistant coach Steve Stirling in the hospital after emergency heart surgery in the midst of the Finals, you could tell this team wanted to win this on for "Stirls". Nice touch by the captain Ryan Keller to bring out the nameplate of Stirling during the Calder Cup presentation too.

When this epic playoff run started almost two months ago, I think Sens fans in Binghamton and Ottawa were cautiously optimistic. A number of key players on the Bingo roster had gained some valuable NHL experience and the roster looked poised to go on a good run in the AHL playoffs.  That was until that "run" hit a near season ending road block in the form of the club's first round opponent in the Manchester Monarchs.

Down three games to one and with their season on the line, the Sens fought their way to a 5-4 overtime victory and suddenly had life. Two more overtime victories backstopped by Robin Lehner and the Sens had survived a first round scare.  The team never looked back...

With a confident Lehner between the pipes and scoring depth that was far superior to that of their opponents, Bingo was able to surge past Portland and Charlotte and book their spot in the final. Houston proved to be a worthy opponent but the Binghamton Senators were a team of destiny and simply wouldn't be denied.

Some of the credit has to go out to Bryan and Tim Murray and the rest of the Sens management team. When Murray took over as GM of this hockey club he made the AHL club one of his top priories. He got the right coach in place in Kurt Kleinendorst and built a team that could compete on a regular basis. The benefits will undoubtedly be felt by the NHL team down the road but for now, the organization can take great pride in having a championship team at the minor league level.

On a personal level, this playoff run and Calder Cup Championship has opened my eyes to the passion and dedication of the hockey fans in Binghamton, New York.  I was lucky enough to make it down for two playoff games and can not say enough good things about the people in that city.  We were welcomed into the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena with open arms and I can honestly say, the two games will go down as two of my most enjoyable live hockey experience.

In the AHL's 75th season, the Binghamton Senators are Calder Cup Champions! Enjoy it, Bingo!

GO BSENS GO!

Nice to know we have comrades in New York.

Congrats to all the guys, they earned it, and this organization is a far cry better than the 16th overall rank that THN gave them.

On another note, I really hope someone from the Senate Reform was down in Houston for all the celebrations! I can't wait to see the videos Bingo will release through their youtube account.

Wow, what an incredible run by a young team. This is such a huge deal for the Ottawa Senators organization. After such a long disappointing season, this is a very bright light at the end of the tunnel.
Perhaps the most exciting part of this is the 19 year old kid between the pipes that just won AHL playoff MVP. Lehner is only going to get better and I am extremely excited that the organization might finally have the franchise goalie we've always lacked.

WAY TO GO BINGO!!!!!!!!!! !

I'm so proud of our organization and am so excited about the future! Here's to the Binghamton Senators for a fantastic run!

In a season where just about everything went wrong FINALLY something went right for the Senators.

Never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine the run the boys would go on. It gives such a great feeling to know that these, well, men will be representing our organization either this year or the next and are building blocks to the future.

It's hard to believe too that this team that won tonight was the same team that I saw at the Rookie Tournament that was held here in London in September. Amazing.

I'm wildly optimistic about the future of our organization going forward as well.

Get ready for the next part of the ride fellow Sens fans.

I also hope as a part of the 20th anniversary celebrations they honour this team. A great part of the next 20yrs.

14 players in Bingo's lineup had never before played in an AHL playoff game.

I'm sure Benoit & Locke (who have won the Cup with the Bulldogs) helped those young players along the way.

What can you say about Lehner. WOW.

Congrats to Bingo & their fans.

Enjoy your Calder Cup parade tomorrow.

Well ladies and gentlemen ... this is a lesson that you need to give young players time, he was 18 at the time for heaven sakes! Get excited bcuz you got him for the whole next season.

Great job by the B-sens and what a showing by Lehner this year. Really nice to see him bounce back to the star we all know he can be after a very trying 1st half of the season. For all the negative press he received, it's great to see his on ice composure in the face of adversity and some great competition.

Looking forward to a very competitive training camp in the fall at all positions.

Having followed the team the entire year and highlighted by our recent trip it really makes you feel a part of it. As pointed out I'm extremely happy for the fans as they really treated us well while there.

The future looks bright and now we can look forward to the draft. Very impressed with Lehner's development the job KK did. I don't know Paul Maclean but definitely think he has to be considered for the head coaching job.

I'll repeat what I read off the lips off of every Sens player

FUCKINNNNNN RIIIIGGGHHHHHHH HTTTTTTT!!!!

What poise by the boys to stick to their gameplan the whole game, even despite at one point being down 2-1. Lehner was simply amazing and couldn't be blamed for the 2 that got by him. That diving save in the 1st.... Unfuckingbeliev able!! and yes Kinrade definitely prevented O.T (which we would have won anyway)

I don't know how many watched on Sportsnet Sens but GOD that color commentary dude was fuckin awful and couldn't have been more of a Homer. Laughed at him all night. The play by play guy was decent but definitely no Grady, I missed Grady BIGTIME!

Bingo Iced a solid line-up back to front, and I'm happy Hoffman managed to crack the top 9 and stay there. Training camp should be interesting... VEERRRRRRYYYY interesting

Next order of business DRAFT DAY! I call that BM makes at least 2 deals.

Congrats B-Sens!!!

Say what you will about winning the Calder Cup but look at the teams that have done it in the last 6 years. The Caps (x3), Philly, Montreal, Nashville, etc.

These clubs have produced and maintained an influx of talent which has translated into top tier consistency in the big league.

Its certainly not a stretch to think that we are on the way to another decade long competitive team in Ottawa.

Thank you Murrays. Thank you Kleinendorst. We're all happy campers right now.

It's a shame they all won't get call up's to the big squad.

Corey locke was a factor in the finals, leading eveyone with 4 points! I am not sure if he picked up any assists tonight, or not.

Robin Lehner saved our post-season. Thanks to Leclaire's injuries Robin spent most of the season driving back and forth from the nhl to the ahl, to practice, then sit on the bench. He only got half the games we wanted him to this year.
He hadn't played in 2 weeks and they threw him into the fire with the team down 3-1 facing elimination. Won 3 straight overtimes including a 51 of 52 save performance in game 6 where he stopped a penalty shot!

He put this team on his shoulders and never looked back.
He just needs to spend the next couple of years working on the details of his game and playing a ton for experience.

LEHNER! LEHNER! LEHNER!

I am so glad I made the trip down to watch the BSens Championship team live! I think an AHL Championship could help sign NHL free agents as it shows depth in the organization.

One guy that stood out for me is Kaspars Daugavins. If the Sens are looking for a solid 3rd/4th line grinder with some speed and skill, he could be the man. He could be good on PK too.

Zack, Butler, and Greening are ready...no doubt.

I'd give Cowen 1 more full year in AHL..especially since there is no rush with the number of NHL defence we currently have.

As for Locke, who knows? could be a Denis Hamel...score a tone at AHL and never really crack NHL. I obviously don't know the whole story with Corey...there must be something. I've always said that I'd like to see him get solid minutes over a 10 game span. Let him get in a groove.

Still impressed with Bass, but think he is the heart and soul of Bingo and most likely future Captain there.

Congrats Bingo,
and absolutely as Sens fans we ought to be rejoicing.
There success had much to do with our big league future stars:
Lehner playoff MVP and all deserved, he is for real, confident, he will be a star
Butler - over 100 games this year and he is proving he can score in any league
Smith - a meaner Chris Kelly, at the same age not much difference between the two
Condra - very intellegent player and will find a spot with us on the 3rd or 4th line
Cowen - first taste of professional hockey and logging 30 minutes
Greening, Gyrba
The list goes on, and the Ottawa training camp will be better then some of the games we have struggled through the past couple of years
I hope Winchester, Regin, Foligno, Kuba, were watching these winners...boys watch your back these guys are coming after your jobs!
Go Sens Go!!!!

I'm not afraid to say it guys; I honestly think in the 19 years of the Senators franchise, the Ottawa Senators have finally found their legitimate franchise goaltender that will help this team for years and years to come.

Too many failed attempts have been made to provide a goalie for the pro club, and I think that since drafted in the second round of 2009, the Ottawa Senators have a goalie they can call theirs.

Look forward to seeing his progression. Robin Lehner's going to be a great goalie.

Now to unleash the dogs, why are people saying "bright future" winning a Calder Cup rarely equate to NHL success, just take a look at the Chicago Wolves, affiliate to the Atlanta Thrashers, 2 championships recently and their future still looks terrible...In fact so terrible that they are now in tough and about to lose their team.

I know what your gonna say, but the Hersey Bears, 11 time Calder Cup champs are the affiliate to the Washington Capitals, which have a nice future and a great team right now. Thats true but how many key players actually come from the Hershey club....exactly ...Ovechkin, Semin, Backstrom, Johansson, Green, Carlson. Only guys I can think of is Neuvirth/Varlam ov which are bot underachievers and Laich.

The Bulldogs won it aslo, the affiliate of the Habs and look where the Habs are, not very good, like the Leafs, stuck in that 7th, 8th, 9th spot every year.

Completely agree ... they just shouldn't rush him. Let him lead the BSens for an entire season and hopefully another strong playoff run. Then give him a shot.

Montreal rushed Price and came perilously close to losing him. A couple of years later, Price is the goalie they always thought he could be. We've got Mr. Anderson. Let's give Robin time to develop ... he's a keeper. [pun intended]

the thrashers are a very deep team in prospects and are still very young, poor management/owne rship is the reason why they've never amounted to anything over the years

concerning the capitals, johansson, green and carlson have all spent time in hershey.

the bulldogs have been a pretty good team for a while now and they have prospects to show for it, while montreal have filled their top 6 with ufas, they still have a very deep system.

And if he doesnt have a good year and Bingo fails to make the playoffs? what now? Goalies are iffy, you dont know if you have a good one or if it was just a good month or two.

Lehner needs to win more than 1 playoff in the AHL, he needs to prove he can get there first, Brust did all the job only to choke in the playoffs. Now with a full year in Bingo as the starter, we'll see what Lehner is made of.

GOOD OLD HOCKEY GAME
Stompin' Tom Connors

Hello out there, were on the air
it's hockey night tonight!
The tension grows,
the whistle blows,
and the puck goes down the ice.
The goalie jumps,
and and the players bump,
and the Sens fans go insane.
Someone roars:
"Bobby (Butler( Scores!"
At the good old hockey game!

Oh!
The good old hockey game!
Its the best game you can name!
And the best game you can name,
is the good old hockey game!

Third Period.
Last game in the play-offs too.
Oh take me where, the hockey players,
face off down the rink,
And the Calder Cup,
is all filled up,
for the champs who win the drink!
Now the final flick,
of a hockey stick,
and a one gigantic scream:
"THE PUCK IS IN! THE BSens WIN!"
At the good ol hockey game

Green, less than a full year in Hershey.
Johansson 2 games in Hersey.
Carlson Less than a full year in Hershey.

And if you think Atlanta and Montreal are deep in top 6 talent, then your are not very knowledgeable and I thank God your are not affiliated in any way with the Sens Org.

Next time do a bit of research.

Im simply stating facts, oh damn, thats true, you dont understand what that means.

Look at any scouting report, from any scout (which are experts by the way) from any of our Bingo prospects and NONE of them, none save Butler projects as being a top 6.

What is so bright in that? We will have solid 3rd & 4th lines for years to come, but top 6 talent, we are seriously lacking.

Whats the difference between spending some time in the AHL and spending a full season? Whats to say that Butler/Greening /Cowen/Condra (who all didn't spend a full season in the AHL) isnt Johansson/Carlson/Green??

I never said deep in top 6, like I said, Montreal has filled theirs through UFA but Atlanta has some very good young players that were drafted like Little/Enstrom and talent they've given away for players like Byfuglien and Ladd.

Why are you talking about Atlanta? Atlanta is gone man, done, finished, over, goodbye and so long! And they have some decent talent on that team, they are completely shit out of luck in Winnipeg right now. Pavalec had a break out season last year and you have guys like Big Buff, Ladd, Kane, Enstrom, etc...They shit the bed the 2nd half of last year but don't be surprised to see them in playoff contention this year...

What does that have to do with the AHL? Nothing I suppose but at least some of our prospects are getting a taste of being a winner? Isn't that what you always say about Spezza, he never won anything? Well these guys just won something!

Sens fan or not, anyone who knows anything about hockey, will tell you that a good farm system will help to lead plenty of depth to an organization and ultimately to a strong NHL team, but you are arguing that is not true, Really???.
Knuble, Green, Burrows, Ladd, Bieksa, Kesler, Chara, Bergeron, Sharp, Keith, Price, and on, and on, the list goes, that spent considerable time in the AHL, and went on to shine in the NHL, are those facts enough for you?
Lehner did not just win a Playoff, he won 14 games to win the Calder Cup, and yes he lead his team, which is why he won the Playoff MVP AT 19 YEARS OF AGE!!!

Winning a Calder Cup is a very positive thing for any organization. Only a bored anti-social troll could shit on hockey fans getting excited about their prospects acheiving their ultimate goal. Obviously this does not mean we have a Stanley Cup contender but it is a giant leap in the right direction. This playoff run has significantly boosted the confidence and development of our very talented prospects. Lehner, Cowen, Butler, Greening, and Smith are our future which to me is looking very bright.

Quoting Captain Alfie:
Winning a Calder Cup is a very positive thing for any organization. Only a bored anti-social troll could shit on hockey fans getting excited about their prospects acheiving their ultimate goal. Obviously this does not mean we have a Stanley Cup contender but it is a giant leap in the right direction. This playoff run has significantly boosted the confidence and development of our very talented prospects. Lehner, Cowen, Butler, Greening, and Smith are our future which to me is looking very bright.

Well said

Have reason to believe Paul MacLean may not be the favourite for the head coach position after all.

That sucks, I wanted Paul MacLean....Any idea who the front runner might be?

I think KK is now the favorite, how can he not be after that incredible year in Bingo?

If not Maclean, hopefully Muller.

Tookie,

Winning helps at any level. Cowen now had a Memorial Cup and a Calder Cup (even though he came in late). It sure helps Lehner being put in pressure situations. Did you hear his interview after? He said it was "the biggest thing that ever happened for me, I can't describe how much this team means to me".

Also, fun fact for you...

Lehner is the 4th teenaged goalie to win the CalderCup, following Carey Price (2007), Patrick Roy (1985) and Gordie Bell (1943)

That's some good company.

Really? I was convinced that he was the front-runner. If I got paid for being wrong, I'd be a millionaire...
Have you heard who may be the favourite? Has anyone else heard anything?

Chip,
have you heard any particular reason why MacLean has fallen out of favour...he really does seem to be the best candidate to fit the needs in Ottawa...experi enced, successful, respected. We need someone the commands respect, and will independent when building our team for next year. Not a new, young inexperienced coach that we have had for the past 5 some years...IMO

A few days ago I called Maclean the favourite. No longer convinced that's the case.

It better not be KK, our experiment with Rookie coaches has been a huge failure. We need a coach with proven NHL success!

I'm ok with signing a rookie coach as long as there is a clause in the contract that says 'Gonchar will not play the left point'.

Here's another fun fact, Price, Roy and Bell got their team to the playoffs, something Lehner was struggling with, when he did play in the season.

Show me at any point where I say winning the Calder Cup is not a good thing...show me. Im simply stating facts that we dont have any top 6 talent in Bingo, right now, save Butler.

And as for comparing Mike Green/John Carlson to Cowen is just funny, Cowen isnt even the same type of defenseman.

Butler I already said he is top 6, but Condra, Greening, Wick, Smith, Bass are all 3rd & 4th line players.

when you listen to the murry video I kind of got that as well.
he said when you know a person you know that bad side as well as the good (refering it sounded like Maclean)
Kind of interesting we waited for the Calder cup to finish.

Chirp...I heard a rumor that Maclean has been offered a new contract with the Wings. Don't know that for sure but I am looking forward to the next few days to see what Head Coach will be our next Boss.

Great game last nite in Houston. Congrats to the Bsens and to the city of Binghamton. Party hardy Amigos! It will be a very exciting camp this fall. New coach and lots of kids banging on the door to the Big Sens lineup. A new draft pick as well. Going to be a great ride watching this Sens team.

Tookie, you're a donkey. Seriously.

You point to historical precedent, it's a worthless comparision. Every team is different, so I don't think it even warrants discussion to compare this team to others that have won the Calder Cup.

Try to base your assessment of the team on what they actually are. You're 100% correct that they are lacking in top-6 prospects. They have one for sure, any MAYBE two if DaCosta is that guy. But I'm sure that they will be addressing that at the draft.

On top of that, how many top-6 players do they actually need? I figure that they have three with significant NHL experience if Alfie is healthy, and all signs point to Butler making the jump next year. So, if they manage to draft a top-6 guy who is capable of making the jump, then they just need one more.

Your problem is that you want to put every player in a silo. You can't do that, it's not an accurate assessment of the team.

I really do not like the Rookie new NHL coach. It has failed and as much as I love Murray as a talent genius, he has alway gone with coaches that he will be able to control. We need a coach that will call all the shots, and will not be intimidated by anyone else above or below him. BM has alway hired coaches that would not be confrontational , and sometimes I believe that some of BM's choices should have been sat ie Kuba, Gonchar, Leclaire, and ever Gerber.
Someone with NHL pedigree will sit veterans when they have to...IMO of course, but I may be wrong

Johne, I think you did a great job on the car commercial - so did the other one yesterday can't remember who unfortunately. People don't get upset at TOOKIE he's a broken hearted LEAF FAN who has to come and wizz all over our special moment. Loved the game last night and the effort these guys put in. Butler is going to be a STUD - he can skate and like Heatley don't give him an open shot cuz it's in. Unlike HEATLEY as I said before HE CAN SKATE and isn't a JERKOFF. Da Costa will be another STUD in a year or so + mark my words like LEHNER - MIKE HOFFMAN had a rough ride this year but he will be a gem(top 6 potential with this guy - just ask Gerrard gallant). He always takes time to adjust to a new level of competition. + We've got 6 picks in the top 65. So TOOKIE on that note BUZZOFF - the FUTURE is BRIGHT!

Yeah, right, Price took his team to playoffs by playing 2 games in 06-07 regular season.
Roy played 1 single game in 84-85 regular season.
"Facts" you were saying?
Tookie is such a Tookie...
