Countdown to Draft Day

In just 18 days, the Ottawa Senators will begin one of the most important days for the franchise in a long time. June 24 and the NHL Entry Draft is a day where Bryan Murray and his scouting staff have an opportunity to set the direction for this hockey team and add a number of quality prospects in the process.

Beginning today, the Sens are getting a closer look at a few of the players they have their eye on.

Sean Couturier, Ryan Strome and Mika Zibanejad were all in town today to go through their individual works out and testing.

According to Steve Lloyd of the Team 1200, it sounded like a fairly basic simple day for the players. There was a light on-ice work out in the AM and then some interviews and individual testing afterward.  Strome and Couturier are both scheduled to play a round of golf with Director of Player Personnel Pierre Dorion this afternoon.

The organization will get a closer look at Gabriel Landeskog and Jonathan Huberdeau tomorrow.  Dougie Hamilton was scheduled to be in town as well but will not make it due to a scheduling conflict.  Dorion mentioned that he is 99% sure the player the Sens draft will be one of the five that are in town this week. That includes Strome, Couturier, Zibanejad, Landeskog or Huberdeau.  I'm stickin' to my guns on this one. The Sens pick will be Landeskog or Strome.

  • In case you missed it, today was Day 1 of the Senate Reform series. Today's episode features some rather cryptic discussions at the scouts meeting. Definitely worth a watch.  You can find it under the highlights tab on the home page.
  • Obviously the other big story around the Sens is their search for a head coach. Murray has not set a deadline to make a decision but I think it's possible we hear something this week.  Most people seem to agree that Paul Maclean is the favourite right now.  The club definitely wants to have someone in place before Draft Day.

The BSens traveled to Houston today in preparation for Game 6, tomorrow night. Roman Wick and Jared Cowen both made the trip although Cowen did not skate with the team.  There was no update given on the status of Cowen but he did take a shot to the head during Game 5.  Coach Kleinendorst said it's not a concussion and Cowen could play tomorrow night.

Lastly, thoughts and prayers are with BSens Assistant Coach Steve Stirling who had to undergo emergency heart surgery yesterday. He is said to be resting comfortably after successful surgery.

Wishing him a speedy recovery.

Landeskog/Couts at #6 and hopefully we can get a pick from CLB(8) or Flames(13)..fla mes need picks so hopefully they'll take our 21st and a 2nd and/or 3rd. CLB needs players but doubt they'll take our spare parts (Kuba I'm looking at you)..can't wait for the 24th!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!FML

I get a little weak-kneed any time I imagine us trading Kuba for anything.

I seriously hope we get Landeskog and Strome. Or just one of them. I'd be fine with that too.

Hoping that Bryan Murray, has narrowed his search somewhat,
in past few weeks after his initial interviews with selected candidates.
Paul Maclean might be the favourite as of today, but I still would take Kirk Muller or Marc Crawford, should Maclean not be interested. All 3 have NHL coaching experience, and have Stanley Cup experience.

Maclean was offered an extension of his contrat as Assistant to Babcock of the Wings since 2005, and he is testing the waters, for a Head Coach job in the NHL .

I read on, that site we won't name, (yeah I know) the Oilers blogger.. that 'rumoured' Columbus would look at moving their 8th overall pick... for another 1st round pick, + a 2nd rounder + an additional asset.

Would be interesting to see if that does come about. If so, Murray should be all over it.. before big mouth Burke does.

Would it be a dream to move up into 8th overall. Would you do it with the 21st overall, Ottawa's 2 rd pick @ 36 + a prospect/player?

After all, we did take Leclaire off their hands... Don't they owe us? LOL

Chirp,

Your buddy Yost is commenting that Alfie is undergoing back surgery this week.
Have you heard this?

If so, why not February? They wasted 4 mos of recovery time + rehab. He would have definitely been ready for next season... having it in June -- yikes... someone goofed.

Ryan Strome about to be featured on the Team in a few...

In all honesty, whoever the heck is picked is going to be good.

I just can't wait to see who it is. The 24th can't come any slower!!

I dont think the Avs will pass on Huberdeau and Larsson...I'd be very surprised if they did. Huberdeau likely played himself into the top 3/4 and likely pushed GL down...because NJ and NYI are both in need for either centers or D, I believe Ottawa will get Landeskog at 6 or move up to 1/2 spot to ensure they get him.

Order of preference has to be:

1/ Huberdeau
2/ Landeskog
3/ Couturier
4/ Strome

Obv the idea of getting RNH of Larsson is nice too, but its clear they both wont be available after 3.

EDIT::
Actually, I think Strome might be ahead of Couturier....to ugh call. Strome could easily wind up being the next Jeff Skinner

I would trade Wiercoch, NSH 1st and Ottawas lowest 2nd round pick, but would push for a 3rd rounder to be traded before the 2nd..... for the 8th overall from CLB

Rocco Grimaldi for the 21st. So underrated because of his size it's a shame.

Oscar Klefbom's also a darkhorse defenceman that nobody's talking about.

Too deep of a draft not to be excited by whoever's picked.

Shane would be a good pick up but I think he is pegged to go high second round. I think it might be a waste to use the 21st pick on him when they could probably get him with the 35th pick.

I don't understand why there doesn't seem to be too much interest in Couturier. At one point he was the top prospect ahead of RNH. He obviously fell a bit but it sounds like he's a well rounded player and was decent for Canada at the WJC.

another vote for landeskog and strome, not sure how to make it happen.

could be.
1.RNH
2.Landeskog
3.Strome
4.Zibanejad
5.Larsson
6.Huberdeau
7.Courtier

not saying we are picking 6 but this could be the sens list of players to take so is it crazy to think other teams will not be on the same thought process.

I like Rocco, and I agree he is very underrated, but I do think we could get him in the 2nd round. I would however with the 21 pick would love to see the Sens draft either Mark Scheifele or Tyler Biggs. Both are great players, Mark putting up great points on a not so great Barrie Colts team. Tyler has great size and strenght, he may have dropped in the rankings but, he could be a top 6 foward down the road. Either way the Sens are looking good with both picks.

Do people really think that trading 21st overall + an early 2nd rounder + a prospect is worth moving up 13 spots in a draft?

Is the dropoff THAT precipitous? I personally don't think it is.

I certainly like the idea of picking early and often, but I think that price is wayyyyyyyyyyyy too steep.

I can't wait 'till it's time for Murray to pick at 21st.

Murray gets up, takes his time to walk by the Leafs draft table and says to Burk :"I heard you want to pick Puempel with your 25th pick". Burk replies: "ya, so?". Murray says: "we're picking him"... and then he walks up to the draft podium and picks Puemple.

:D

Wouldn't that be nice!

This week seems unlikely to me for a coach to be announced since they want to interview Kleinendorst (sp?). Seems pretty dumb to interrupt him while Bingo is inching towards the Calder Cup. It would be at least a few days after that finishes before they bring him in.

On topic: I want to see Landeskog in a Sens jersey on draft day.

Hey SENS Fans,

It is incredibly expensive to trade in to the top 10. However, a first a second and a player (not prospect) could get it done. No, it wont be Gonchar or Kuba, probably an experienced player but you'd see someone lesser come back the other way. I think Ottawa will be in touch with all the 9 other teams in the top 10 during the draft when their pick comes up and if they are identifying a player they like they will move up, and after the 6th pick if they don't move up they'll still be talking to the teams as long as one of the 5 guys they interviewed this week slips. If Zibanejad, Couturier or Strome slips to 8 and 9th i could see Ottawa pulling the trigger to get 2 top prospects.

Here's a fantasy scenario if Colorado would be happy just picking 11th.

Ottawa trades their 2012 1st round pick, Chicago's 2nd in 2011 and Nick Foligno for Colorado's 2011 First Rounder (#2).

Ottawa trades Nashville's 1st round pick (#21) in 2011 and their 2nd round pick (#35) in 2011 to Columbus for their 1st round pick in 2011 (#8).

1. EDM - RNH
2. OTT - Landeskog
3. FLA - Huberdeau
4. NJ - Larsson
5. NYI - Couturier
6. OTT - Zibanejad
7. WPG - Murphy
8. OTT - Strome

3 picks in the top 10!!!! Rebuild over! Who needs a 1st next year if you could shock the league like this?! And we'd still have Boston's 2nd for this year. Lando plays in Foligno's spot next season. The year after Zibanejad centers line 2 and Strome surges to 1st line status. Ottawa wins the cup in 2014 with Robin Lehner as the MVP! FANTASY IS FUN.

I'm with C-mac. If trading a second and a player is the difference between a guy like Tyler Biggs and a guy like Zibanejad or Strome then it's a deal I'll make 10 times out of 10. Quality over quantity. We've got quantity already, we just lack quality. A player at 21 will be a quality prospect I'm sure, but at 8 and 9, they'll be much higher quality.

0 #25 Sandy 2011-06-06 19:18
I'm not sure about trading that 2012 first round pick. Is not next year's draft a lot better than this one?

They will still be rebuilding and will need that pick.

Can you do that trade with Colorado by not giving them a first rounder but a prospect? They will also pick 11th... would they settle for a player a year or two advanced -- like Ottawa did with Rundblad. Question is -- who would that player be?

3 top 10 picks -- would be great though.

Murray has 12 picks... he will use them to move up if he wants to..

He won't be suspended... just like Burrows wasn't.

It definitely was late. Definitely an attempt to injure. He did not have to hit him that hard.
But Horton had to be aware Rome was on the ice.

I think the Sedins, Kesler, Burrows had better keep their heads up.

I keep getting stressed about the draft. Wondering who, when, how will it all turn out. That Senate Reform video, while interesting didn't help my anxiety much. It's a combination of excitement and total nervous energy for a day 18 days away. Crazy. Then I remember (and saw) that ol' BM is sitting at the head of our table and try to tell myself to relax. What can be done will be. For those who have questioned Murray before (and he has deserved some of it) you can't help but appreciate what he has done down in Bingo. He took a bad team and turned it into a Calder Cup contender. He did that. He knows what it takes to build a winning team and will do just that on draft day. We have lots of picks and are in the drivers seat. No matter when or who we pick, we will get a good player who will find his place in our puzzle. That said, I want Landeskog, quality over quantity and I'll likely be drunk by the time the Sens make their second pick, whenever that is. Go Sens Go.

I try to avoid the whole "getting credit" business but there have been a couple scoops on here during the coach search that haven't received proper due.

I mentioned that Boughner was interviewed a week before anyone else and Lebrun is being given credit.

http://www.windsorstar.com/sports/Sens+interview+Boughner/4898325/story.html

Was the first to say that Craig MacTavish had an interview for the position. I also made it quite clear that DeBoer wasn't going to get an interview despite the likes of Bob McKenzie claiming otherwise.

The site isn't perfect by any means but man it can be tough to get credit sometimes!

Oh and could someone with the ability to do such things take the audio from this commercial and make it into a Sens commercial?

Makes me think about the Senators everytime I see it...

Funny you should say that, because I'm rendering a video right now, except I still have the car part in it... will post once I have it up.

Murray needs to build the Senators like the Bruins and a little bit like the Canucks Murray needs to add size and speed to this team.

I will buy you hooked on phonics if you promise not to post here until you complete all the modules. And I would also like to see Murray acquire Andrew Ladd. I would, I would!

Relax dude, That hit would be totally clean if it wasn't late. Under rule 48 it isn't suspendable. It was north-south, shoulder to body. If it were a hit on Thornton you wouldn't be as mad right? Just because he is a superstar.
It was a dirty hit and I don't like it but rules are rules.
The 5-minute penalty was enough not a suspension.

LOL. So the hit would be totally clean if it wasn't for everything that made it illegal? News flash Mansbridge, that's every dirty hit.

He didn't even start to move forward until the puck was gone. It's a blindside illegal hit because Horton has no reason to expect the hit, it was far outside of the boundaries of being a clean play.

Definitely suspension worthy, but considering the NHL's sterling track record at doing the right thing, he'll probably get nothing.

Nicely done! I guess there is only so much that can be done with such a short clip eh?

Have also heard rumours about Alfie going under the knife but the Sens organizations is refuting the claims for the time being.

If this is true, I am extremely pissed off at Alfredsson. He hasn't played since, what, February? He could have gotten this done a LONG time ago when it was obviously not improving.

Anyone who says Rome shouldn't or wont be suspended for the hit on Horton just doesn't know the current rules. It was a late blindside hit to the head that resulted in a severe injury. Rome has a hearing with the NHL today and I'd expect that he gets 1-3 games. I think he deserves 3 personally.

He also left his feet to deliver the hit.

That's the problem with commercials, being 30 seconds.
I'm trying to think of a way to lengthen the audio even more but it's tough when we only have the short read from the guy. I got the audio to 45 seconds which provides a little more time for goose bumps...
