Really looking forward to getting a chance to watch one of these games on something other than a choppy internet feed. Kudos to the guys at Sportsnet for recognizing and opportunity and getting these games on TV.
It feels like ages ago but the BSens are coming off a big OT win on Saturday night in Houston. Jim O'Brien played the role of hero in that won as Robin Lehner and the rest of the Binghamton side continued their unbelievable play in extra time.
Defenceman Derek Smith is expected to return to the Binghamton line up tonight and as expected, Robin Lehner gets the start in goal.
Ottawa Sun writer Bruce Garrioch has weighed in on the Sens coaching situation suggesting that Kirk Muller and Paul Maclean have both been interviewed for the position. Add those names to a list that already includes Craig MacTavish and Bob Boughner and the names of confirmed interviewees is starting to look pretty good.
Spoke with a contact today who suggested that Maclean had an "excellent interview". No confirmation on that but it certainly wouldn't come as a surprise. The former Detroit assistant has a great track record and a ton of experience.
From the beginning I think I just assumed that Kirk Muller was headed to Dallas or New Jersey but if there is a chance he comes to Ottawa, I think Murray needs to make it happen. Muller really does seem like the perfect fit with this team.
In Murray We Trust.
Just not Crawford or Cameron.
Haven't received confirmation of an interview for Cunneyworth.
Too bad seems like a good fit/good story. Respected Ottawa captain and successful AHL coach returning as head coach. From the periphery looks like he deserves a look. I trust Murray though. Melnyk on the other hand...
Muller won a cup with the Habs in 93 (and wore the 'A' for them). I think he knows what it takes to win a cup too no?
6-Maurice Richard
6-Joe Sakic
5-Glenn Anderson
4-Bob Nystrom
4-Dale Hunter
4-Wayne Gretzky
4-Stephane Richer
4-Joe Murphy
4-Esa Tikkanen
4-Jaromir Jagr
4-Kirk Muller
4-Jeremy Roenick
I'd say he's in pretty good company in terms of winners......
hopefully the sportsnet sens channel isn't blacked out in southern ontario.
I believe we need to convince the Harper government to set our dollar equal to that of the american dollar and freeze it. Or introduce a north american dollar that has equal value in both countries. We should try to do this now while our dollar is higher and/or at par.
the advantages would be to the canadian citizens since all our pricing on goods in canada would be lowered, too many companies are not giving canadians proper exchange rates on goods and we are paying more then the american consumer.
this would help our economy but i know its more easily said then done.
since we talked politics on election day i thought i would mention it here since its for the good of you and i as citizens.
cheers. please discuss
hopefully our coaching situation is announced soon.
Gooooooooooo BBBBBBBBBSSSSee eeeeeeeeeennsss sssss, Go!
I too am now thinking, with his credentials, that McLean will be the best fit.
I think also that the Sens missed out on a good one with Kevin Dineen.
McLean brings a lot of experience and Murray knows the guy.
Chirp, would you say right now he is the front runner? He has been an asst coach under one of the best NHL head coaches.
I still like Muller & Kleinendorst & Cunneyworth -- but this guy may have the edge.
Question is -- is he a good communicator and teacher for the younger players. Possibly asst coaches can help with that teaching as well.
Cunneyworth, Boughner or Kleinendorst could be in the running for asst coaches could they not?
I think he would be near the top of the list. Great coach.
I see the Bingo Bus is sold out... this that just 1 bus or 2?
He's still serving as Winnipeg's coach. It would be tampering to speak to him.
I thought the pundits were suggesting yesterday that the new ownership would possibly bring in their own GM and coach. Too bad about the tight timing. No idea how decisions like that need to unfold if this whole deal still requires NHL BOG approval in three weeks.
Alot of the coaching possibilities we've been talking have been interesting, as have the interviews thus far, but surprisingly none of the candidates so far are really veteran coaches.
how long do we have to sign butler?
i see a weber beard in him ;)
I hope Bryan is working the phones on this one... if we could land the kid for cheap, that'd be an amazing steal!
Bus 1. We didn't have enough interest to make the second bus roll unfortunately. The bus we are sending is packed though. Should be a great time!
Yeah I dont know how that works, if they bring their own GM/Coach then they would have to cut or buyout the others. Not sure tho.
Whats the deadline?
Is this only on Sportsnet SENS? I'd love to watch but don't get that channel. Otherwise it will be Team1200 for me I guess!
He was one of the guys that I hoped Ottawa would look at.
According to Pierre McGuire (yeah I know) he is a great teacher and communicator. Good luck to him in Florida.
Have already worked out a contract with him too.
I'm sure there will be one. Keep an eye on the comment section tonight.
They did, he was interviewed and chose Florida.
If you've been wishing for a change in the way the NHL hands out its discipline, then June 1 might be your Christmas morning.
Darren Dreger of TSN broke the news this morning that Colin Campbell, the NHL's Senior Vice President and Director of Hockey Operations since 1996, is resigning his post as league disciplinarian. He'll remain on as Vice President of Hockey Operations.
Brendan Shanahan expected to take over.
He goes to NY Ranger with a 5th round pick, for two 2nd rounders and F Roman Horak (drafted 5th round, 127 overall in 2009) going to Calgary.
Tim Erixon + a 5th round pick has been traded by Calgary to the Rangers for Roman Horak (whoever that is) + 2 second round picks.
The Rangers signed him to an ELC.
I read about this on TSN today. I am very happy that he decided to step down. Not only has he been very inconsistent, but it was a conflict of interest for him seeing as his son plays in the league. He has had a lot of heat from fans because they think he is showing some favortism for any team his son goes. I have heard or seen no bad comments about this news. Everybody loves it. Shanny will be much better anyway.
Former first round pick who played well in the SEL. Should be a good player.
Gretzky was never one to command respect out of fear, he was simply respected for his skills. I remember alot of retired players saying he was a little bitch and was protected by a goon squad!
Muller on the other hand oozes respect cuz he earner it the hard way. Not saying he would be better but I think Muller would have more command of players than Gretzky.
Greztky never did have much character...
There's a reason as to why he's being considered by teams who have vacant coaching positions. He's ready.
My prediction of a coaching announcement for tomorrow still stands! Mark it!
Even though I agree with your assessment that Muller would be a better coach than Gretzky, I completely disagree with you about Gretzky not having character or lacks respect from his players.
I wonder when Murray would address that as well.
Tell me, when you go out to eat, do you have to order a separate meal for your ego?
Never said he didnt get respect from his players, I said Muller could probably get more as he has a much tougher character than Gretz.
Would you be scared if Gretzky got mad or if Muller got mad...
I think I would laugh if Gretzky got mad, with his little girly voice!
Maybe you can all help me.
I just time shifted for 7pm for tonight and checked all the Sportsnet channels and don't see the Bingo/Houston game for tonight. All I see is "International friendly football" listed for that time.
I live in Southern Ontario (London to be exact) so would that game be made available only to the Ottawa area or should that be available across the country if you get all the Sportsnet channels? (Sens games are blacked out here)
If that's the case ... wow .. stupid!
All I can say regarding Gretzky is "F**K Marc Crawford". I'd rather bring Yashin back than hire that asshole. Nice shootout Marc. Sit Gretzky. Pure genius.
I don't think I would be scared either way, they are only doing the job they are getting paid to do. It always comes down to that. You would be scared of muller?
Should be interesting. I was incredibly impressed with the HBO Pens-Caps coverage, that I wanted them to do one for the Sens lol. Well, we have it!
Muller was interviewed in the past 48 hours. Mac T has been or will be interviewed. They're also given KK some chops for the coaching job as well.
Truer words have never been spoken. I feel bad for my buddies out there...
Kind of a summary of what I have already said. MacTavish was interviewed already (over the weekend). As I understand it Muller and Maclean were spoken to earlier this week and Bob Boughner got an interview yesterday.
Sounds like the interview process has already been completed which seems to suggest they already spoke with Cameron and Kleinendorst. Can't confirm that last part though.
I think you missed the point - Muller can do both. Don't bring him down for being a champion when his hockey IQ is exceptionally high. Muller, although inferior, was a far, far more complete player than Wayne and can teach our kids all aspects of the game.
Gretzky had instant respect from his players, but Muller actually went out and DID the things he would be asking his players to do (give/take checks, fore/backcheck etc).
If the only argument you've been hearing is that Muller won as a player, then you haven't been listening.
Whoever ends up being the coach, I hope we're patient with him.
Yep, Toronto teams even non hockey still put the screws to the Sens.
FRIG!!!!!!
They haven't interviewed Kleinendorst yet... so no announcement tomorrow.
I assume the new head coach will have say in who is hired as his assistants. They need 2.
There is a chance they already interviewed Kleinendorst.
NO far from an expert, just opinions which don't hurt anybody. Sometimes they are way off base... sometimes not.
Now that's more like it... thanks for the correction Chirp.
Ken Warren suggests otherwise in this article so who knows. I had been told that candidates had already been spoken to but that could mean everyone but KK.

Chirp you hear anything ... ??

I wonder if Murray does indeed have his guy in mind at this point.
Don`t know too much about Maclean... but has been an assistant under Babcock for a long time.
think we are just waiting on the annoucement ? If red wings management is already aware Maclean declined his extension and will be leaving too coach Ottawa what's with delay maybe find out tomorrow?

Can't believe the Flames didn't sign Erixon, fudge.
thanks sportsnet.
ch 500 (if you got an HD box, although the game isnt in HD)
ch 414 for regular.
playing without worry about being hit kind of opens the ice.
Not defending anyone, just a comment.
I guess he`s not exactly turning into the prospect that the organization thought he`d be..
Tradable asset at the draft in my opinion.
He has been playing, yes. I believe he's injured right now. Actually got better over the course of the season. Needs to get bigger.
Hopefully he can bounce back and stand out next season. Going to be tough to break a D-core with the pro team for the next several years, however.
Thank you!
If we're talking about the standpoint of winning games I don't think it much matters who is doing the coaching. On paper the Ottawa Senators are a bottom five team in the league talent wise. They are probably bottom three. If Anderson stands on his head a lot and several young players break out it could be a different story but don't hold your breathe. Fans will have to be patient with a couple tough years of young players learning + key drafts. I just hope if we're not likely a playoff team next year we're a lottery team instead. Top five or bottom five nowhere else I want to be.
Personally, MY OPINION, I can't see them announcing that the night of the first game of the Stanley Cup Final. But what do I know.
I think it's about 7 yrs.
Can it be Houston doing a job of 'clogging them up'?
They appear from what I can tell by their faces to be an older team.
The B-Sens have to fight through them with speed. That's how they will win.
very true. Sandy, will you marry me?
what the... ?
Sorry already married... probably old enough to be your mother.
Not sure if that's a celebrity that anyone would want to look like.
Hey, did you ever consider that I may be 58? I'm not, but you should have at least considered it. Anyways, I understand
My only head scratcher re: 99 is why he'd want to hang with caveperson Jungle Jim.
GEDDY FTW! *shrieks*
i checked houston's team age, they are roughly the same as bingo. however i believe they are more experienced. i just hope guys such as potulny step up to the plate and put similar production as they had in earlier rounds.
i see more of dobby from harry potter (specifically the ears)
But that nose....
But that nose....
Sandy, that's exactly what I was thinking... you hit it right on the
Cowen was solid. His skating has improved a lot but his puck handling and passing still needs some work. Still though he is progressing nicely it looks like and played a ton of minutes
I thought Borowiecki looked great out there. He's very mobile, can move the puck, and has a bit of an edge out there. Watch out for this kid, he's flown under the radar a bit but I think he has a chance to make an impact in Ottawa in the future
Gryba is HUGE and he can move pretty good for his size I thought he had a few brain cramps though a few turnovers but was impressed by his speed for such a big guy
Mike Hoffman has a loooonnnggg way to go. Lots of speed but I've seen him play a few times this year and he makes bad decisions with the puck
Kinda tough to judge Lehner tonight. Made a couple big saves but the first one was a bad one, and unfortunately a big one.
I thought Bingo was and is the better team by far, but Houston clogged up the neutral zone real well and Bingo couldn't get anything going until it was too late. Hackett was real good as well. Still think we will win the series in 7!
Last year's SCF had two goalies who were average.
Not this year. Luongo & Thomas were nothing but spectacular tonight. Much more exciting with great goalies making unbelievable saves. Nothing more to say than that.
1 - 0 Vancouver wins on a goal with 18 seconds left in the game.
what a player raffi torres is
Firstly, this is not the place to discuss politics. Secondly, anyone who knows anything about politics, econimics and the money market knows that no individual sets or government actually has true control over the value of the dollar. The Goverment can control what the value using a variety of factors including raising or lowering interest rates, etc.. but ultimatly its the same as the TSE or NYSE, it can be very volitile and fluctuate rapidly based on whether or not investors are buying or selling the Canadian dollar.
Since the impact of the Canadian dollar on our NHL clubs here is a huge factor and given the timeliness of this issue with the Jets coming back and everything, I don't see a problem with bringing up comments like this. Besides, who are you to tell people what to discuss here or not?
That being said, I agree with you it is an asinine idea and very complicated notion welding two currencies together like that, never mind the fact there are benefits *and* drawbacks for our economy when when currency is higher than the other...
Will today be the day we announce our new coach? The suspense is killing me!
The other argument I heard is look at what he's done the last few years in Montreal. And as I previously said it looks just like the same Jacques Martin team we had a while back, so I don't see why extra credit is going to Muller. Until someone shows me that he's done something special as a coach I'm just not sold on him.
Really? Look I hate the Habs with a passion but I cant deny what they have accomplished the last few years. They have a terrible club, yet Muller was able to get the most out of their forward group, guys like Plekanec, Kostitsyn, Gionta, Pouliot, Desharnais. Martin had a stacked team while in Ottawa, not the same in MTL, Muller is really running the show as far as forwards go.
Poor flames fans... They just can't catch a break lol
Them and Colorado.
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=367643
Oh, and yes Hartsburg was a disaster here, but he and Sutter have a history together and play a similar system. Seems like a good fit.
Only part that stood out was Iginla couldnt afford a pair of pants....come on man!
Not particularly fair. He's only been assistant up until now. The point with Muller is that someone needs to bite the bullet and take a chance on him. Can't say he has to prove himself as a coach before he gets a chance to coach. Kind of a catch 22. It's difficult to say how much of what MTL does/did is/was his doing.
It's just so damn easy for me to imagine Muller as a great coach. He knows so much about the game and was a complete player, which is great for teaching.
Imagine 20 years from now, looking back, saying "Who would have thought Muller would be such a successful coach?"
Quite a few people, is the apparent answer.
LOL Tookie, Muller is not running the show, what evidence do you have to that effect. Martin's teams in Ottawa were not all stacked either.
I've never said Muller would never be a good coach, there is just not enough evidence for all the dick riding going on. I really expected Dallas would be taking a chance on him this summer. Either way though, I don't think he's the guy for Ottawa and I don't think Ottawa is in a position to be hiring a coach they are taking a chance on. I just don't appreciate when people claim a skill set he has not proven to date and base it on false claims.
The more I research about Paul Maclean and listen to other people in the business discuss his contributions and learning curve, the more I feel he would be one of the better candidates for the job.
