Talking NHL Playoffs

After what seemed like a bit of a ho-hum start, the NHL playoffs have delivered in a big way the last week or so. And while our Senators may not be around, there is still plenty to talk about in the hockey world over the course of the last week.

The Collapse of the Canucks- Despite jumping out to a 3-0 lead, I really couldn't shake that feeling that the Hawks still had a shot. I`m sure deep down Canucks fans felt that same lingering feeling. The way the Hawks came out in Game 4 you could just tell they weren't going to make things easy of the league's top team. Now Luongo and the Canucks return to Vancouver with the pressure of an entire city weighing them down. Can't wait to see how they respond.

Preds Moving On- Not only did it solidify an extra pick for the Ottawa Senators, it was just nice to see the Nashville organization get over that first round hurdle. The Preds/Ducks series featured some of the best hockey of the first round.

Habs Feel the Heat- Despite jumping out to a shocking 2-0 series lead (I had them pegged for a sweep) the Canadiens will now face elimination on home ice tomorrow night. The Habs are definitely in trouble but I have a hard time counting them out based on what we've seen from them in the playoffs the last couple years. Would love to see a seventh game in that series.

The Headshots- I'm glad the actual hockey is finally starting to overshadow the headshot talk that dominated the first week of the playoffs. Obviously there are some issues the league needs to address but it was a shame to see it dominate the headlines during playoff time.

Playoff MVP- There are a few good candidates for the first round MVP including the recently eliminated Teemu Selanne and Corey Perry. Datsyuk was amazing, Weber has been dominant and Dave Bolland has been fantastic in his three games. My vote goes to Marty St. Louis. Has scored big goals, leads the playoffs in scoring and has been a leader for that Tampa team. Can his Bolts force Game 7 though?

Officiating An Issue- It's nothing new but the officiating has been a question mark in the playoffs so far. I can't believe some of the soft calls that are being made in what seems like every series. I remember the days when a 5 on 3 in the playoffs was nearly impossible. Now it seems like each team gets one every game.

Pool Update- And a shout-out to the SensChirp pool leader jric. He's holding down a three point lead but could be in trouble with the Ducks being eliminated and the Canucks on the brink. Good luck to all the competitors

So what do you think of the NHL playoffs so far? Favourite storylines/moments? Who are you rooting for?

Peluso say Go Hawks - Too many Vancouver fans hating the Sens when WE were in the final.

Peluso also say, Go Bruins. Lucic is fun to watch.

Peluso want the 'Peg to get a team back, but also wanted to see the 'Yotes win. Peluso wonders if he could skate faster like Datsyuk if mullet was trimmed.

Peluso called Boston vs Nashville in final from the outset.

Peluso hoping for Bingo bus tour. GO B-SENS!

Peluso out.

Watching the Nucks pulling off one of the greatest choke jobs in nhl history is making those losses to the leafs in the earlier 2000's a little less painful. :D

Hey Chirp, I don't get many chances to chime in but I do love checking your site out! I am a huge sens fan...and take a lot of heat for it here in Montreal...I work at the Reebok office here...so after the season the sens had...for me it is great being able to poke fun at all the habs fans here...I think the are done!
Curious to know what you and the other readers here think of when watching former sens in the playoffs...Are you glad for Fisher, Eaves, Kelly or does it irk you that they/teams are doing well?
Also other than Svatos is there anyone that you think will have a hard time coming back next year?

I was really hoping that the Canucks and Hawks wouldn't meet up in the first round. I want to cheer for the Canucks because they are a Canadian team and they're fun to watch, but I've been a fan of Chicago for quite some time. I can't switch over my allegiances, so hopefully Chicago comes out with the game 7 win tomorrow night.

I have nothing against the Habs themselves but I can't stand their fans. They have the dumbest fan base in the NHL without a doubt, so with saying that I'm hoping Boston can close things out as soon as possible.

I'm hoping either Detroit or Chicago wins the cup this year. There just isn't another team I like.

Oh and before I forget, Go Kings Go, fuck you Heater.

So with the Pred's winning first round, did we solidify a 2nd round pick from them? I forgot the conditions of the other pick with the fisher trade.

Hopefully with Manchester knocked out the Kings can call up some reinforcements to help knock Douchebag Danny out in the first round.

The Collapse of the Canucks:
If they lose, what do you do as a GM? Roberto Luongo is a great regular season goalie, but he has had zero success in the playoffs. Being so close to the cap, and considering the low price tag of last years Stanley cup winning goalie, do you consider moving your ex-Captain?

Preds moving on: There goes 50% of Senschirp readers Hockey pools. Got to admit, the depth on NSH is scary and they came into the playoffs playing the best hockey of all the teams. Should be interesting to see what happens next round.

Habs feel the heat: Roster-Wise, I'm surprised the habs are still in it. Montreal would not have made the playoffs if not for carey price. Bruins need a big game from Thomas.. like, shutout big.

Headshots: Plenty of time to talk about this in the offseason.

Playoff MVP: That's my name, don't wear it out. But seriously, I don't know who will get it, but I'll bet you it goes to a Canadian born player... it always does.

Officiating an Issue: Whatever, at least its consistently bad this year. Last season the only games that I noticed any kind of bad reffing was when Pittsburgh was playing. I love that Crosby is not in this years playoffs getting handouts from referees all series long
Can you believe there was a penalty shot awarded VS vancoucer? that was amazing

Overall, the playoffs started very very very pooorly. I have never been so bored watching hockey as I was on the first night of the post season.. things are looking up now though.

go sens

Norman,

nope, we solidified a 3rd round pick. 2nd round pick if NSH advances to the 3rd round of playoffs.

Great write up Chirp. Maybe it's because of the large amount of gambling and pooling have been doing this year due to the lack of Sens presence. But I am loving the offs like crazy this year.

Just one thing you are missing though. Cowen and his Chiefs are in the Western Conference Finals in the WHL right now. Portland just tied the series 1-1 last night. Cowen has 11 points in 13 GP and is 2nd in scoring for his team. The Kootenay Ice are up 2-0 in their Eastern Conference Final right now too. Cranbrook is only a hour away from me. So if the Chiefs and the Ice make it threw, I will be at every Ice home game. Fingers crossed. Right now the Ice are playing Wacey Hamilton and the Tiger Cats. I should probably take in one of their games too but I am just too busy right now. It's a bummer.

Great point about Cowen and the Chiefs. Mentioned that on Twitter the other day but should have had it in this post too.

Harry, I've found the last couple of years, when Ottawa missed in 2009 I really enjoyed the palyoffs. Last year I stopped caring. I get too invested in them so when they get eliminated I'm exhausted and stop caring about the rest of the playoffs.

I like that Vancouver is getting humbled. I still think they'll pull off a win in Game7, they are the better team, but I like that them and their fans have been taken down a peg. They went into the playoffs thinking the path to the Finals would be a breeze. Then after Game 3, it was destiny. They crushed their old enemy, it would be a piece of cake. I like how it's brought them back to reality, you still have to actually play your games.

The Preds and Ducks was the best hockey of the first round, really good games for the most part. The rest of the playoffs to date has been kind of a bust, only Vancouver is getting interesting. I think the 2nd round will be good though.

I've been enjoying all the Canuck losses lately more than I thought I would. I live in Vancouver and work a few blocks from Rogers Arena in a pub where I can watch the games as I work, and I hear how cocky some of their fans have become. Some had them christened champions before they played a single playoff game.

Some of them still mock me for being a Sens fan even right after their team gets shelled 7-2. So as much as the Canucks are sort of my adopted second team, I'm taking a lot of pleasure in watching their fans eat their words.

Must have missed the tweet Chirp. Figured you were on it. I have been a lazy bum for too long. I have been trying to go see Cowen play in Ice country for way too long. I will be spoiled if I get an opportunity to go see him play Finals hockey. If it does happen, I will get all over it. You might even get a chirp of the week outta me. I have been waiting for a good reason to drop one of those.

From the Senators Facebook page:

Both David Rundblad and Jakob Silfverberg have been named to Team Sweden at the upcoming IIHF World Championships starting later this week. We'll be doing daily tournament recaps over at www.ottawasenators.com and we'll keep you in the loop as to which games will be broadcast.

My favourite moments will be watching MTL and VAN CHOKE after having a commanding lead! Pretty unreal that we might see a 3-0 comeback win 2 years in a row!

If the Canucks choke people will take off the "chocker" tag and stamp it on Vancouver's logo... Good for us! But for Jesus sakes! Roberto make a shutout to shut up those freaking Americans!

Direct quote from Murray in relation to his UFA market goals.

"It's not going to be that we're going to go out and sign older free agents to stop gap it again. If we do get a free agent, it'll be a younger type (of player). But I think those are exciting things that you want ... So I don't think it was very hard to determine that I wanted to continue and wanted to be a factor in what happens with the club going forward.""

Of course. May try to convince Mrs. Chirp to come along but it seems like a long shot. Binghamton can be a tough sell for a road trip.

Good things, Chirp? Or bad things..

Do you know how many spots are available on the bus? Or will that be coming in your later note.

Should be coming in the later note. I've talked with some of the other people organizing though and it sounds like there is an opportunity for an additional bus if it comes to that.

Hey Wee, your buddy Strome really tore it up tonight in the tougher OHL -3 no points must've have folded it up like an old lawn chair again. He's on fire not even a point a game in Junior hockey. But we all know a point in the OHl=3 in the Q. That Huberdeau really underachieving.

Hey Jakester. Apparently you're as dumb as your posts. At no point have I ever lauded the abilities of Strome. I faintly remember mocking your stupidity when you claimed Landeskog had a bad playoffs. So apparently you're so stupid you can't even remember which prospect I was defending a week ago. It was Landeskog who I defended when you claimed he had a bad playoffs. Huberdeau has struggled against stiffer competition in the third round of the QMJHL playoffs just like I suggested he might. RNH was completely shut down in his final series. Strome wasn't even part of the discussion but congrats on making yourself look like a complete retard. I mean really I don't mind mocking you for your stupid posts but could you at least be smart enough to remember the discussion correctly. When you say things that are completely untrue it's just embarrassing.
