Alfie Done for the Year

In typical Daniel Alfredsson style, the Captain gave it one more chance. There was little left for the Sens to play for but Alfie just had to be sure. And now with just three games remaining on the schedule, the club made it official; Daniel Alfredsson will not return to the line up this season.

And there is at least a hint of speculation about his future beyond this season.

You can be sure of one thing. Daniel Alfredsson is going to do everything he can to get ready for at least one more kick at the can. The back issue that has sidelined him for the past couple months is obviously something fairly serious. It even sounds like an off-season surgery is a possibility depending on how the rehab goes.

It's hard to gauge just how serious this injury is. I have a feeling that if the Sens were in a playoff push right now, Alfie would be in the line up. But with nothing on the line in the 2010/2011 season, he is able to shut down and get the rest he needs.

We have seen Alfredsson make quick recoveries his entire career and I fully expect him to push hard during the summer months and be ready to go in October. But for the first time, there seems to be at least a hint of doubt about his playing future.

When asked if he thought the injury might be career threatening, here is what the Captain had to say.

“No, not as of now. It’s been dragging on for a while. I’ve been limited to a lot of exercising and so forth, but I expect to be back next year.”

If he expects to be back, well then I think we should expect him to be back too.

Also on the injury front, it sounds like Erik Karlsson and Sergei Gonchar will both be shut down for the final three games. Karlsson with a cut to the thigh and Sergei Gonchar with a concussion.

With little to play for this week, there really is no need for injured players to rush back. The Sens are expected to announce as many as three call ups tomorrow morning before their game with the Flyers at SBP.

Rangers with a huge comeback down 3-0 to win 5-3. Another devastating end to the Leafs season hahahah

There aren't eliminated yet. They need to go 3-0 without SO win and Buffalo needs to lose all 3 in regulation, and Carolina doesn't pass Buffalo

But the fat lady will sing soon.

prime your wrong. There goals for and allowed differential is the tie breaker here. The sabres are positive and the leafs are negative

You hit the nail on the head, Chirp. I too feel like this is the first of Alfie's injuries where I've actually questioned his comeback ability.

Not just that, but it seems this issue has dogged him for some time. He's not getting any younger and although I've heard he's a fitness nut, I imagine he'll be more susceptible to re-injury.

It would be a shame to see Alfie go out with a whimper, not a bang, but we all knew he wasn't getting another crack at a cup anyway, so I'm not as concerned about the number of seasons he stays on a rebuilding roster for.

Will be a sad day in Senstown when he hangs up the skates.

Actually no, I'm right. The rules is listed below

* The fewer number of games played (i.e., superior points percentage).
* The greater number of games won, excluding games won in the Shootout (NEW for 2010-11). This figure is reflected in the ROW column.
* The greater number of points earned in games between the tied clubs. If two clubs are tied, and have not played an equal number of home games against each other, points earned in the first game played in the city that had the extra game shall not be included. If more than two clubs are tied, the higher percentage of available points earned in games among those clubs, and not including any "odd" games, shall be used to determine the standing.
* The greater differential between goals for and against for the entire regular season.

The 3rd * is where the Leafs have the tiebreaker. Read the rules next time before saying i'm wrong

Chirp,

Any idea if the Sens will try to get Mark Stone in for a couple games? Wheat Kings were knocked out by Medicine Hat tonight.

Non-shutout wins in brackets.

Every team has a pretty tough schedule. Everything is still very possible between picking 3rd, 4th or 5th.

That Islander/Pengui n game should be interesting considering what's gone on between them.

Wacey Hamilton with 1G 1A for Medicine Hat.

Also, Gabriel Landeskog (1G -3 tonight) eliminated from the playoffs in Game 7. Maybe that means his draft stock will drop? Ya, I know, wishful thinking. But you never know...

Leafs went 3-2-0-1 = 7 pts

Do you guys know how to add? Anyone else?

Yeah I have no clue where these people are getting their info.. Wins have always been the first breaker, always... Now SO wins don't count towards your tie breaker wins.. Goal differential is always last resort...

It's hilarious that you had two people tell you that you were wrong though...

A trade has been announced, Ottawa sends their 4th pick to Carolina for their 14th and Chad Larose.

Ottawa selects Richard Rakell with the 14th pick.

Ottawa selects Mika Zibanejad with the 21st pick.

Sorry Chirp, it was instinctual and I voted the story a 0. Sucks for Alfie, I hope he has a positive offseason and can come back and play 65+ games the next two years.
