With just seven games to go in the regular season, the Ottawa Senators sit in 28th in the NHL. The bottom five teams are entered into a lottery which the percentages weighted based on where each team finished the regular season.
The problem right now is the Sens are moving up, while the teams above them continue to falter. Here's a look at the draft lottery teams and the remaining games for each. At first glance, it appears as though Ottawa may have the easiest road of the bottom five teams. They play three of their next four games against teams outside of the playoffs.
Meanwhile, the Panthers currently sit just one point ahead of Ottawa, and close out with five of their last seven against playoff teams and a pivotal game against the Sens still to come. The road ahead isn't much easier for the 26th placed Islanders.
If you are looking for a silver lining in this, it's the fact that one of the players the Sens scouts are highest on- Ryan Strome, is projected to go outside of the top four selections.

Of course the Sens scouts are going to say that they are highest on Strome(don't get me wrong...he looks solid and will be a good player) because they are just as aware as our fan base that we have played ourselves out of contention for anyone projected to go higher.
I genuinely feel "cheated"(not 100% accurate term) that we had to endure such a horrible season in the basement for the majority of the season, to start playing well when the games are irrelevant. I suppose the one saving grace is the fact that really any of the top 5 picks could theoretically end up being the top player this year.
Con't from previous
Oh well.I guess at this point may as well be happy that the young guys are being introduced into the NHL in a winning environment. Now hopefully it continues next season because if we are horrible again and repeat this season it will suck
I mentioned the Senators being high on Strome well over a month ago. This isn't new.
Fair enough...Person ally I was really looking forward to having the pick of the liter.
I also genuinely suspect that Colorado knew EXACTLY what would happen when they did this trade.
I always thought Trolls were nocturnal.
As for the season in general, I feel it was inevitable that we would eventually slip into the league basement. With the exception of Detroit and a few other teams, it's pretty much a cyclic event. You have to admire that we managed to be a consistent playoff-bound team for as long as we did, and that's largely due to the patient building strategy of the early 90's. If we apply the same restraint once more, I'm sure we'll be back to being a serious contender in the coming seasons once more.
But what I can't stand is people ragging on the team for winning. We have to start looking at the big picture.
Do you not think that, Greening, Condra, and Butler (3 locks to make the squad in my opinion next year) are not growing as players/teammat es, and thus making us stronger in the long run?
We're not jumping out of the top five for the draft and any of the top 4, Larsson,Landens kog,RNH,Coutour ier, will help us.
Relax sens fans, and enjoy the little hockey we have left...even if it means winning a few.
Anderson played an amazing game and saw all the pucks.
Greening, Condra, Smith, Butler and all the others played
excellent 2 way hockey.
So, this top 5 draft pick is totally unpredictable as to performance of any player. Just look at Regin ,who last year was on fire, and evryone expected at least 25 goals or more. Took him forever to notch his 1st goal of the season.
We have 12 picks in first 65 or something like that, some players like Runblad and Cowen should make the roster, so why are so many posters so worried about the lottery draft ?? We will be just fine !!
Thanks troll...Spezza has been awesome and the trade deadline has passed. Thanks for coming out. He will be a great mentor moving forward and it will be tough to break up this top line entering next season.
1. Toronto traded Kaberle and Versteeg. Both of those guys are higher quality that anyone we traded. Just because they didn't "empty the cupboard" doesn't mean anything. We traded a bunch of 3rd liners.
2. You obviously don't watch anyone other than the sens cuz if you did, you would know that the Isles did go on a run and are still playing good hockey. Edmonton is decimated by injury. And the avs have Elliot, enough said. They obviously weren't trying to get the better goalie in the trade.
-Ryan Nugent-Hopkins
-Gabriel Landeskog
-Sean Couturier
-Ryan Strome
-Jonathan Huberdeau
Im thinking we finish 27th, and perhaps win the lottery and move up, we have to be optimistic now.
Now that he's signed, I would much rather have Anderson and the 4th overall pick then Elliot and the 2nd overall pick (no one is as bad as the Oilers)
Digging the team these days, they're showing that this club was never so far out of it as people thought. We're in for a fun, scrappy year next year.
At certain points this season, Landeskog, Larsson, RNH, and Couturier have all been considered the top prospect. We can't go wrong so just enjoy the rest of the season this year. It's been pretty awesome seeing the names of Butler, Greening, and Condra on the stats sheet on a regular basis, and other than Anderson, Spezza and Karlsson have really put this team on their backs.
To your second point, Edmonton is no more injury decimated than Ottawa. NYI has won half their games - not nearly the 'hot' record that Ottawa has. Colorado - well, exactly. They are not winning because they are a much worse team than Ottawa, especially with their goaltending. Exactly my point. Finally, you didn't mention FLA. I guess that's because their dismal record supports my point.
Not sure if serious...
The guy is obviously being sarcastic haha an ppl are calling him a troll because they don't get that
Here is my line-up for next year.
Butler - Spezza - Michalek
Regin - UFA\draft pick - Alfie
Neil - Smith - Foligno
Shannon - Winchester - Condra
Phillips - Lee
Gonchar - Cowen
Rundblad - Karlsson
Anderson
UFA
Maybe a reason I'm not worrying yet is because I believe the players Sens are most interested in are not currently in the ISS top 5. One may get in there but likely not both. I think the Sens are looking more at upside and prepared to be more patient than some other teams. That can work in our favour.
Damn, i was hoping we'd play brodeur a few games for an evaluation!
let McElhinney play sunday!
The draft pick might not play next year and out of all our roster players I think Winchester is the odd man out, besides that I really like our line up. Try and get Laich to go with Spezza or Perron from St Louis and we could have a good young team that plays solid 2 way hockey every night. And having Anderson helps too.
Oops! Thanks for the correction.
I realize this leaves us with only 6 regulars on d. that being said, it may be between carkner and lee, right?! carkner would obviously be the cheaper option... and at this point we'd probably all rather Lee... the thing is, he spent upoward of 2/3s the season in the press box. that's gotta keep him feeling pretty bitter. i guess im wondering if there's no legit guarantee in him seeing regular ice time.. maybe he'll opt to jump ship... just my two cents.
GO SENS GO!
It's weird to think that there might not be room for Greening next year. He's looked at least good enough for a 3rd line role. Maybe Regin will become the odd man out if he can't find his scoring touch.
1) Clouston wants a job next year
2) Young players on the team want a roster spot next year
3) Craig Anderson
I think beating the Flyers/Caps/Dev ils/Lightning goes to show that this team will be a tough team to beat next season. Not to say that we'll win 60 games, but we're gonna put up a hell of a fight in every single one of them. Embrace the winning, and the draft Gods will give us something better than Alex Daigle.
Oh ya, maybe since this team has found some heart, maybe the fans will too. GO SENS GO!
I'd love for our 1st rounders to do some time in Bingo, I think its important for them to dominate and get their confidence up at an all time high. Greening and Condra both look NHL ready to me, Butler could use a little work, but I think an offseason with NHLers will do him a world of good. Lots of things to be excited about as a Sens fan, who would of thought offensive depth would be an issue after trading off Kovalev/Fisher/ Kelly/Ruutu for picks.
Guess you will be disappointed when the sens aren't as good as you think next year. I won't be saying "I told u so" because I don't wish them to fail. It's time to face reality, there is no pressure on the players right now in sens nation. Most pressure is on Murray for the draft. If you don't believe me, look how many people are cheering for loses (me included). Real pressure situation...
But what about Greening (our Newfie star)?
Regin was just caught up in a soft-more slump
hooray for mediocrity
What I am basicly saying is guys that have not come to training camp before or have not stayed for a long enough look before will be battling for those spots. Nobody is a shoe in except the vets like Spezza, Neil, ect.
It's not like Ottawa will be massively hurt by drafting in a worst case scenario 5th spot instead of 2nd/3rd/4th. Nobody really knows which of the guys ranked 1st-8th will end up being the best NHL player. This has been repeated by pundits, scouts, and even Ottawa staff for months. I hope we're as high as possible to give our scouts the best chance to make the right call. I hope the team takes the action of putting Brodeur in the net for the rest of the games. It easily cause us to go 2-5-0 if not worse. At that point perhaps even send Greening and Condra back down to bingo for the home stretch and playoffs. We know they're probably going to make the big club next year already. Make decisions for the long-term future not just the right now.
Spezza
Foligno
Neil
Regin
Michalek
Winchester
Alfredsson
5 spots up for grab
Defense
Phillips
Gonchar
Kuba
Karlsson
Carkner
Lee
Really there are no open spots on defense until we move some so Expect at least on move to bring in Rundblad probably if not two. Carkner and Kuba moved out before UFA or maybe Kuba and Gonchar. The 6 guys above are on one way contracts so it will be hard right now to say what will happen. The team could also decide to go with 7 defenseman again so getting rid of kuba would give Ottawa room for both Cowen and Rundblad at least
Goaltending
Anderson
The backup is not determined yet. But it is obvious it is either Lehner or a UFA goalie. We will see soon enough.
Look at the success of the Dallas Stars this season. I've watched my share of games this season, living in Dallas, and they play to win every night. Last offseason they shed some older players like Turco and Modano, brought in a new goaltender via trade who has been outstanding. Does this sound familiar at all yet? Lets add to the fact that Spezza is our Brad Richards. Now I know we don't have the firepower of a Loui Eriksson or Jaime Benn, but we do have firepower on the blueline.
I don't think Dallas has what it takes to be called a contender, but you bet that they can make some surprises come playoffs and I think that they will if they make it in.
Believe that this team is in for more than just a mediocre season next year.
There is a HUGE talent difference between Dallas and Ottawa. I expect us to be better last year than this year, but I would be pleasanly (but very) surprised if we even make the playoffs in the much weaker east
As the season winds down I was wondering if you would be doing write up's/reviews on the different players that would be available to Ottawa in the 1st and 2nd round. I really don't know much about Strome other than he has similar stats to RNH.
according to capgeek we hav lee under contract for next year and then he's an rfa
On another note, J. Spezz has now elevated our expectations of him to a whole other level. All I can say is that he better play this well from the start of next year, or else there will be a whole lot of unhappy fans. Hope this is "the new" Spezza we're watching and not some mirrage.
I think that is supposed to be sarcasm.
LMAO
haha that pretty much made my day lol

Scouts are pretty unanimous that none of the forwards in this years' draft are in the same class as Hall or Seguin. I'd be surprised if whoever we draft makes much of an impact next season. I think Nugent-Hopkins and Strome, in particular, have pretty high ceilings but neither are projected as being ready next season.
hard to say.
What is better
15th-20th pick OR 20th-25th pick and a 2nd (2012)
Hoping NSH makes it the finals now. FOUR 2nd round picks! Pretty encouraging, considering our 7th round pick Colin Greening.
One year of drafting and we could be stocked for the decade!
To all you naysayers:
I have watched so-called "spoilers", and that is not what I'm seeing from the Senators. They're playing fast paced, defense first, patient, and smart hockey.
We’re skating circles (finally) around our opponents, and scoring on the most unlikely plays.
The hockey gods are smiling…
This isn't 'wide-open, who gives a crap, we're not making the playoffs so let’s ruin it for the other team’ hockey.
This is ‘let’s beat the other guys to the puck, battle them hard, and keep trying to get chances’.
Don’t worry about the draft pick (BM = ill-drafta)
Enjoy the wins… They're winning, aren't they?
Hoping NSH makes it the finals now. FOUR 2nd round picks! Pretty encouraging, considering our 7th round pick Colin Greening./quote]
Nope, if they make it to the Western Conference Finals we get their 2nd round pick NEXT YEAR.
That means that he can now be signed by an NHL team.
Anybody know where Bryan Murray is ?
we need to trade spezza beacause hes playing so good that its affecting our draft position. once we trade him, we should be good for the 2nd overall pick. chances are the second overall pick will be 10 times better than spezza. i say do it murray
Hey bud, this isn't about how many thumbs up you can amass and everyone is entitled to their opinions. But are you developmentally delayed?
I would of course have the latter, as the result would be 2 players in lieu of only 1 player !
Quoting zana120:
So when does he trade him? The trade deadline has passed. He can only trade him at the draft at the earliest when the season is over. Lot of help that will be.
Can you imagine the pressure on the incoming draft prospect if the Sens had been utter shit since the dismantling this year, with nothing positive to take away for next year?
Of course we can, Jason Spezza 2001. Look at all the crap he's been through, us putting so much on him when he first played. We don't need that, we need a team that feels they can play and win together. If it costs us a few spots, I say so be it. I don't want to see Spezza and 2011 draft guy on a first line and a bag of shit behind them. I want a team.
Thanks, if this is the case, it really doesn't matter who we pick as they will have little to no impact on the club for at least 2 years, unless we get lucky -
Let the Rumours fly!
New Hampshire still in it though...
taylor who? tyler who? scouts don't know as much as you'd think, skinner was the class of that draft, not seguin, not hall.
The fact that there isn't a 'crosby' in this draft doesnt worry me. the fact there isnt a 'hall or seguin' debate doesnt bother me. there are FIVE players that scouts cannot agree on, meaning there are FIVE players who are tied for the number 1 draft position. thats better than TWO. and better than ONE.
draft the guy who scored the most goals. Anyone can have 80-100 pts playing junior. the guy with 45-50 goals is the one you want to draft.
it wont .... relax , our team is winning , and we need to spoil every other team we can .....
Tchager , Tookie , and the whole of yous who want us to lose , well your the TEAMS ( sens duhuhh) BIGGEST LOSERS .
our team needs to go otu to WIN everynight !!
you must be an ex laff fan or soemthing ... maybe habs ???
sad.....
