Checking in From Regina

Sorry for another late post. Tough to stay on top of things while I'm travelling. Just arrived here in Regina for the last stop on my cross Canada journey.

Things will be back to normal around here in the very near future! Very impressed with the discussion in here today though. Left everyone to their own devices and you guys handled it well. Another benefit of removing anonymous comments I suppose.

Couple pieces of Sens news out there today...

-The club announced the signing of Robin Lehner and Eric Gryba to entry level deals. Lehner will finish the season with the AHL affiliate in Bingo. Should be interesting to see how he does down the stretch

-The club also announced that Zach Smith has been returned to Binghamton

-Ottawa was on the ice today and Volchenkov and Michalek were both out there. Michalek is not expected to play until the last few games of the season but Volchenkov could play as early as tomorrow night against the Canes

-Bobby Butler will play tomorrow and will wear number 16

Once again, I'll be looking for a place to take in the game tomorrow night. Any Sens fans out there know a good place to watch some puck in Regina?

Kovalev Magic

I think we can all agree if Alex Kovalev just scores goals like this the rest of the way then it was $5 mil well spent

AK27 was invisible most of the night but scored the OT winner and gave the Sens a huge two points in Washington. Kovie showed a flash of the hands that make him the most skilled player in the NHL.

If he shows up come playoff time, the Sens are in great shape.

Not to rub it in or anything but Spezza had four points tonight. Not bad at all....

Late Game Day Post

Sorry for the late update today guys. Been busy in Winnipeg and didn't have a chance to update till now...

As you all know, huge test tonight in Washington. The Caps are coming off a loss on home ice which should make the Beasts of the East even tougher than usual. Ottawa will have to be at the top of their game to come away with the two points tonight.

One line up change expected for the Sens this evening as Anton Volchenkov will not play. Brian Lee has been called up and will dress in his place. Other than that, the Sens will ice the same line up as Saturday against the Panthers.

Regin-Spezza-Alfredsson
Cullen-Fisher-Kovalev
Ruutu-Kelly-Neil
Foligno-Smith-Winchester

Butler did skate with the team but will not dress tonight. He will wear #16 for the Sens.

Brian Elliott gets the start in the Ottawa goal.

Looks like I'll be taking in the game at the Boston Pizza in Winnipeg tonight so if there are any Sens fans in the area watching at BP, fire me an email and I'll stop by and say hi!

Monday Updates

Lots going on in Sens Land today so here is a quick update of the days news...

-Bobby Butler will join the team in Washington to finalize his 2 year contract with the team. Murray is hoping that Butler will play in a couple games before the season is out.

-Also on the NCAA front, Murray is looking to have defenceman Patrick Wiercioch signed to a contract before the end of the week. Goaltending prospect Robin Lehner will join the Binghamton Senators today and stay there for the rest of the season.

-The team also announced the signing of Eric Gryba out of Boston University.

- Good news for Milan Michalek as it sounds like his knee is progressing. Still a few days away but it sounds like the rehab is going well.

-Filip Kuba sounds close as well and is likely looking at a similar time fram as Michalek. Kuba's hip has been bugging him for awhile now and he wants to make sure it's 100% before returning to the line up

-Anton Volchenkov's injury is not serious but he is doubtful for tomorrow night's game. If he can't go, Brian Lee will be recalled. Alfredsson and Kovalev did not skate but are expected to play against the Caps.

- Brian Elliott will be named the NHL's first star of the week today. Elliott posted a 4-0-0 record with a 1.00 GAA and a couple shut outs. Not bad at all.

Sens to Sign Butler (CONFIRMED)

(UPDATE 11:04 PM)- Looks like it's a done deal. Official announcement expected tomorrow...

Just catching wind of this now but it sounds like the Senators may be closing in on NCAA prospect Bobby Butler. According to Elliotte Friedman, there are still a handful of teams chasing the college star but apparently the Sens are at the front of the pack.

Butler is coming off a great season with the University of New Hampshire where he scored 29 goals (53 pts) in 39 games.

Would be a heck of a pick up by Bryan Murray if he can get it done.

Sens Win Fourth Straight

I don't want to take all the credit for the Senators recent turn around. I mean sure the penalty kill has been out of this world and Brian Elliott has been standing on his head but I think we can all point to the moment where things turned around for this team.

It was the day SensChirp removed anonymous comment posting. The Sens moved to 4-0 since that landmark day. A little positive energy has gone a long way it seems!

Another solid win for this team last night as they held on to edge the Florida Panthers on home ice. Florida had every chance to tie the game up late but Brian Elliott made some key saves and Ottawa was able to kill off the second 5 on 3 of the period to preserve the lead.

Erik Karlsson turned in another amazing performance, this time picking up 3 assists for his first career three point game. The kid has been unbelievable the last little while and really seems to have turned a corner after a rough outing in Dallas a little over a week ago.

Not all good news as defenceman Anton Volchenkov left the game with an upper body injury after getting run over by Andy Sutton. Should know more on A-Train tomorrow.

Found this clip of Zach Smith in the AHL. Pretty impressive tilt.

More coming a little later today...

Game Day vs. Panthers

Right back at it tonight as the Sens get set to host the Florida Panthers at SBP.

Just the one line up change as Alex Kovalev returns after a one game absence. Turns out the reason Kovalev missed the game last night was to get a haircut. Kidding of course but the idea of seeing an injury report that lists Kovalev as day to day with a haircut is pretty funny to me.

With Kovalev returning to the line up Ryan Shannon comes out. Shean Donovan is the other healthy scratch

Brian Elliott gets the nod in goal.

Plenty of tickets left for this one so if you're looking for something to do tonight, why not head down to SBP and make your hockey lovin' face.

Sens Win

Despite what the officials had to say the Senators found a way to win their 9th straight game against the Buffalo Sabres.

And rather than get into the nuts and bolts of the game (like Fisher getting kicked out for no reason), I thought we might acknowledge the fact that the Sens won.

And while we are at it, the clip from 30 rock, that mentioned our Ottawa Senators.

Game Day vs. Sabres

If the Senators are going to have any shot at grabbing the Northeast Division and having home ice advantage in the first round then tonight is a must win.

In regulation, at that.

Ottawa has won eight straight against the Sabres and could very well end up playing them in the first round of the playoffs. Ottawa currently sits 7 points back of the Sabres with Buffalo having two games in hand.

Meanwhile, in the Sens rear view, the Habs are just one point back with the Senators playing their game in hand tonight.

Eight games to go in the regular season and still no idea who the Sens might match up with in Round 1.

Here were the lines at the skate this morning. Kovalev is out. Shannon is in.
Regin-Spezza-Alfredsson
Cullen-Fisher-Shannon
Ruutu-Kelly-Neil
Foligno-Smith-Winchester

Brian Elliott starts in goal.

Off Season- Volchenkov and/or Sutton

(UPDATE 4:54 PM)- Update from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun. Apparently Alex Kovalev did not make the trip and will not play in Buffalo tomorrow night. They are calling it a lower body injury.

Another slow day for the Sens so I thought I'd address what will be a very interesting off season issue.

As I understand it, there has been limited communication between Bryan Murray and Jay Grossman (Volchekov's agent) since the NHL trade deadline. Neither side will rule out an extension but at the same time neither side appears to be working hard towards one.

In fact, the agent of Volchenkov just posted a link to an article about Volchenkov on his Twitter account saying that no defenceman's stock is rising faster than Anton's.

Volchenkov wants to stay. Murray wants him to stay but not at any cost. Murray can not afford to overpay for a defensive defenceman and he knows it.

Enter Andy Sutton...

Also a UFA at season's end, Sutton was picked up at the deadline as an insurance policy of sorts. Murray knew there was a chance that A-Train could walk so he wanted to make sure he was prepared.

If A-Train leaves on July 1, you can expect Murray to turn his attention to Sutton. In fact, I'm sure there will be a chat between Murray and Sutton's agent well before the market opens.

Sutton is 34 and would love to stay in Ottawa. Seems pretty obvious though that there won't be room for both. Murray is going to have some tough choices to make this summer.

How do you think Murray should handle Volchenkov and Sutton? Should he focus on one over the other? How much is too much for a defensive defenceman?

In the meantime, Sens fans can look forward to the #5 and #24 trains running as scheduled for the next 8 games plus playoffs.

A Day Off

The Sens have a couple days off now as they get set for a showdown with the Sabres on Friday night. The division is still a long shot but with the two head to head games still left, Ottawa has an outside shot at grabbing the Northeast title.

Wins over the Habs and Flyers have helped the Senators solidify their spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Nothing is set in stone yet but the site Sports Club Stats now puts the Sens chances at 98.5%.

I like those odds...

The Habs and Sabres play tonight and I have no idea who I should be cheering for. On one hand you have the Habs just 4 points back of the Sens but at the same time, Buffalo is 5 clear of Ottawa with a few games in hand.

It's hard not to start thinking about potential playoff match up this time of year. While plenty of things can change over the next 10 games, it looks as though Ottawa could play one of Pittsburgh or New Jersey if they do hold on to that 5th place spot.

Tough match up either way.

Somebody asked about Sens prospect Roman Wick in the comment thread so I thought I would address that quickly. The Senators are hoping to convince Wick to come over for camp next season. Seems like first they want to know Wick is willing to play in Bingo if he cant crack the big club.

I would still classify him as a long shot to make the team next season but it's been a pretty impressive rise for the Swiss born forward. Wick has 31 points in 37 games in the Swiss league this year and was solid for the Swiss in the Olympics.

Definitely a prospect to keep an eye on next season.

Back to Back

Back to back ridiculous, goal line saves from Anton Volchenkov.
Back to back intimidating, shut down performances from Andy Sutton.
Back to back solid games from Chris Campoli. (22:20 in ice time)
Back to back shutouts from Brian Elliott and most importantly...

BACK TO BACK WINS FOR THE OTTAWA SENATORS!

We knew this was going to be a huge 48 hours for the Ottawa Senators and they responded in a big way. Another impressive defensive effort where the Sens got all the saves they needed from Elliott and picked up another important two points.

Amazing effort from the PK tonight as they were able to keep one of the league's best power plays off the board all night, including a full 2 minute 5 on 3. The Flyers ended up 0 fer 6 on the PP.

Power play obviously had it's struggles tonight. They had three chances in the first 10 minutes and came up empty and sputtered on an unheard of 7:00 minute power play in the third. Despite the struggles of the power play the Senators were able to pull together defensively and shut down what should have been a desperate Flyers squad.

Everyone will be talking about the video review late in this one but I think the war room got it right. As close as that puck was to crossing the line, there was no view that showed the puck completely over the line.

Anyway, that's all for this evening. Thanks to everyone who came out to the live blog tonight. Lots of fun!

Game Day vs. Philadelphia

Ho Hum, just another huge game for the Ottawa Senators. Tis the season, I suppose.

The team responded well last night in Montreal and will look to keep it going tonight on home ice against the Flyers. Ottawa holds a 2 point edge on the Flyers and have played one more game.

A win tonight would be huge in the Senators playoff push. While the division remains a long shot, Ottawa does have two more games against the Sabres so they are still within striking distance.

The Senators got some bad news this morning as it looks as though Milan Michalek will miss some more time with that knee injury. Sounds like it could be a couple weeks but they are hoping surgery won't be required.

Still no update on Filip Kuba either. He will be out again tonight and very little is known about his injury. Seems like a nagging thing more than anything and rest is likely best at this point.

The Sens didn't skate this morning but I think it's safe to say we will see the same line up tonight.

Brian Elliott will get the start in goal.

Elliott Takes The Ball

It was the biggest game of the year and Brian Elliott played like it.

After watching Leclaire falter in Dallas on Saturday, Elliott knew he had a chance to grab the starting role and he did just that. This is Brian Elliott's team the rest of the way. Leclaire could get one, maybe two more starts but it seems like Elliott has grabbed the number one spot.

The pairing of Andy Sutton and Erik Karlsson was an absolute force all night. Karlsson had a power play goal and an assist in a winning effort in what was an impressive bounce back game from the 19 year old. His partner, Sutton, was a physical force all night long. He had three big hits and kept the Habs forwards honest at the blue line.

Sutton also chipped in with 5 blocked shots in over 23 minutes of ice time. Certainly his best game as a Senator.

The blueline had some breakdowns but they got the saves when they needed them.

Don't know about the rest of you but I thought there was a ton of missed calls tonight. Seemed like I could count 5 or 6 hooking or slashing calls that were missed. Good to see Ottawa make it count on their lone power play.

Really liked the game of Peter Regin tonight too as he had a chance to skate on the top line. Seemed to bring a ton of energy to the rink and should get another look up there tomorrow night.

Perfect road game for Ottawa tonight. A usually raucous Montreal crowd was silent from the get go and was at their loudest as they booed their team of the ice.

Back at it tomorrow night in another massive game against Philadelphia. Should be an update on Michalek in the AM.

GO SENS GO!

Game Day in Montreal

Biggest game of the season? I would say so.

The next two days will be absolutely huge for the Senators in their push for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The cushion has been all but squandered with the 9th place Thrashers now sitting just 4 points back.

Bad news to start the day though as it looks like Michalek injury may be worse than originally thought. He will undergo further tests to determine the extent of the damage. Stay tuned for updates on this front.

Meanwhile, here are the lines from the skate this morning. Smith is in, Shannon is out. Donovan is the other scratch up front.

Cullen-Spezza-Alfredsson;
Foligno-Fisher-Kovalev
Ruutu-Kelly-Neil (Donovan)
Smith-Regin-Winchester (Shannon)

The Senators announced today that they have recalled forward Zach Smith from Binghamton. He is expected to be in the line up tomorrow night in Montreal.

Sens Drop Another

Despite an amazing performance from Jason Spezza, the Sens dropped their 5th straight this afternoon in Dallas.

Once again, Pascal Leclaire got the hook. This time getting pulled after the 5th goal against in the third period. This was his chance and he blew it. I know he's not entirely to blame for the loss but he just couldn't give them a save when they needed it.

I have seen a lot of second guessing of Clouston around here when it comes to the way he's handled the goalies but what is he supposed to do. Both guys are struggling right now and not really giving Clouston much choice.

Has to be Elliott on Monday night.

Anyway, have at it folks...

Leclaire to Start

As expected, Pascal Leclaire gets the nod in Dallas this afternoon. Elliott had a rough go in Atlanta the other night so Pascal will have the chance to take the ball and run with it.

The team needs some big saves right now and has to have confidence in their goaltending. It really doesn't mater who is in net at this point, one of these guys has to step up and today Leclaire gets that chance.

Michalek did skate yesterday but will be out of the line up this afternoon. Ian Mendes speculates that Peter Regin may actually get a shot on the top line with Spezza and Alfredsson with Michalek out.

Either Winchester or Donovan will draw back in but we won't know till game time.

All seven defenceman are healthy on the back end so it looks like Matt Carkner will be the guy that comes out of the line up.

Puck drops at 2:00 PM....

Michalek on the Ice in Dallas

Worst comment thread yet. I can't believe the crap we've had to read through in there. Deep down I just hope it's one anonymous Leaf fan posting all that filth but that seems unlikely. Anyway, I hope everyone feels better and is ready to cheer on the team tomorrow in Dallas.

To those of you keeping a level head throughout this..kudos. It's fine to criticize the team but "fans" throwing in the towel need to give their head a shake. You really don't have to look that far back to see how this team responded to their last losing streak. Gotta keep the faith...

Anyway, good news today as Milan Michalek was on the ice at practice in Dallas. He left the game early last night and it didn't look good. Definitely surprised to see him out there today.

Meanwhile, Alfredsson, Fisher and Kuba all took the day off. No big surprise really as we know that Fisher and Kuba are both nursing injuries.

No announcement has been made yet but you can be sure Pascal Leclaire will get the nod tomorrow afternoon. Puck drops at 2:00 PM...

Sens Fall Again

It looked like Ottawa was right back in this thing after 40 minutes. Two goals in 39 seconds tied the game at 3-3 and gave the team life heading into the third period.

Then the wheels came off...

A brutal elbowing call on Andy Sutton got the ball rolling as the Thrashers scored three times in the final 20 on route to a convincing 6-3 victory. Another ugly loss for the Senators.

Plenty of finger pointing to go around after the loss and I can imagine there will be a ton of that in the comment section. I do my best to remain positive around here but this team obviously needs a spark and soon. The cushion they gave themselves before the Olympic break is disappearing and the division is slipping away.

All sorts of reasons this team is struggling right now but the production of their top players is a huge factor.

Alfredsson
just doesn't seem to have the jump he had before the Olympic break and Alex Kovalev has disappeared all together. Mike Fisher made horrible decisions all night long and now Michalek looks like he could miss some time.

Add to that a weak outing from Brian Elliott and it's pretty clear why Ottawa struggled. You'd have to think the the door is open for Leclaire in Dallas.

Still confident Ottawa can get things turned around but it has to happen soon. The 9th place Rangers are currently 8 back of Ottawa and have played the same number of games. Ottawa has eleven games left in the season and will likely need to win six of those to get in the playoffs.

It has to start on Saturday.

For now though, let's try and keep it civil in the comment section....

Elliott Starts, Kuba/Fisher Probable

Big game in Atlanta tonight. Ottawa turned in an awful performance against the Leafs on Tuesday night and should be a motivated bunch in Atlanta. A win would close the Sens within a single point of top spot in the division.

The Thrashers are still in the playoff picture, sitting just 5 points out of 8th. They are a team that loves to outwork you, so Ottawa will have to be sharp from the get go tonight.

The team held an optional skate this morning with most players attending. Phillips, Ruutu, Spezza, Shannon and Michalek sat out the practice. Ottawa should get a boost tonight as it looks like both Mike Fisher and Filip Kuba will return to the line up. According to Ian Mendes, they are listed as probable right now.

Still waiting to hear who comes out to make room. You would think Winchester would come out to make room for Fisher but the defence scratch is a little more difficult to predict.

Brian Elliott gets the start.

I've been asking around the last couple of days to gauge the Senators interest in the pool of college free agents. Unfortunately though, it seems fairly quiet on that front. Murray is known for looking at some of those college guys but there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of speculation out there.

They definitely had an interest in Casey Wellman, who ended up signing in Minnesota. The 22 year old out of the University of Massachusetts drew interest from a number of teams and apparently Ottawa was there right till the end.

I'll keep digging though and see if I can come up with any other possibilities.

Lastly, here's a link to an interesting article from Ian Mendes. Talks about the Senators recent slide and putting it all in perspective.

Back in Ottawa-Notes From Practice

That last post was a wee bit of a train wreck. Guess that's what happens when I try to post at 2:00 AM after a night of drowning my sorrows in Halifax...

Anyway, if the comments in that last thread are any indication, this is a fan base that is really starting to panic. Loses to the hated Leafs seem to have that effect on some of us. But the truth is this team is still in a great spot and relatively safe in the Eastern Conference playoff picture.

The good news is the Sabres seem to be a in a bit of a slide right now too so the division is definitely still there for the taking. If Ottawa can get a win tomorrow night in Atlanta they will be right back within a single point of Buffalo in the Northeast.

Couple notes from practice this morning...

Filip Kuba skated with the team at practice and looks like he could return tomorrow night. Alfredsson, Fisher, Carkner and Volchenkov all had the day off and their statuses will be updated tomorrow.

I'm back in Ottawa now so things should be back to normal around here. Hope to have an update on some of the College free agents out there and who the Sens might be looking at.

Until tomorrow...

Another Tough One

Obviously a game the Sens couldnt afford to not lose but did. I know we all love to point fingers but tonight the whole team struggled.

The good news is I had a solid time in Halifax and got to connect with some real SensChirp readers! Thanks to the people that came out to Bubba Ray's tonight!

This team will bounce back and I hope most of you believe....

Game Day vs. Leafs

Hopefully this will be the last late Game Day post for a little while. My East Coast trip is coming to an end and I'll be headed back to Ottawa tomorrow evening.

It may be the lowly Leafs in town tonight but this really is a huge game for the Sens. They need to come out with a strong effort and put Saturday night's stinker behind them. Add to that the fact that Ottawa has dropped a couple in a row to the Leafs and tonight becomes that much more important.

Start with the bad news as it looks like Mike Fisher will be out of the line up tonight. I've heard it's his back that's bugging him but for now they are calling it upper body. He was listed as doubtful this morning

The good news is Nick Foligno and Chris Campoli will both return to the line up. Here is a look at the lines from the skate this morning...

Michaalek-Spezza-Foligno
Kelly-Cullen-Alfredsson
Shannon-Regin-Kovalev
Ruutu-Winchester-Neil

Phillips-Volchenkov

Brian Elliott gets the start.

Headed to Halifax!

Sorry for the late post today folks. Just finished a whirlwind tour of Saint John, New Brunswick and now sitting around waiting for a flight to Halifax.

Going to be there for the game tomorrow night so if anyone knows any good spots to watch the game (with minimal Leaf supporters), I'm ALL ears!

Couple interesting notes from practice this morning as it looks like Nick Foligno will return to the Sens line up. He skated with the team and is probable for the game against the Leafs. Same goes for Chris Campoli.

Kuba skated by himself before practice and it still apparently not close to returning.

I hate to call a game a must win this early in the season but I've been sensing a little panic around these parts lately. I'd hate to see what another home ice loss against the Leafs would do. Here's hoping for a strong effort tomorrow night.

Sunday Links

Obviously a rough game last night so there really isn't much to say. Ottawa was sloppy from the get go and aside from about a 5 minute stretch in the second period, they got dominated.

Naysayers will have a field day with this one I'm sure but we know what this team is capable of when they are at their best so we just gotta hope they get this turned around in a hurry. Next game is Tuesday against the Leafs.

Anyway, thought I would pass on a couple interesting link I've had send my way the last week or so...

The first is from a site called Stadium Journey. They do reviews on all the professional sports stadiums in North America. This week they looked at Scotiabank Place. Pretty interesting read. You can check it out here...

Power Play Continues to Struggle

The Ottawa Senators continued to sturggle on the power play and last night it cost them in Calgary.

I actually thought Ottawa looked like the better team for most of the night but just couldn't find a way to get one past Kiprusoff. More than that, they couldn't find a way to get one past the Calgary defenders.

Flames blocked a ton of shots in this one and played a really strong positional game. They didn't give the Sens much and made it nearly impossible for Ottawa to get to the net. This was a game where the power play had to carry them and it didn't. The Senators went 0 for 5 with the man advantage.

Say what you will about Filip Kuba but the Senators have definitely missed him on the back end. He may not be a premier power play QB but he's the best Ottawa has and things run smoother with him back there on the power play.

Ottawa is back in action Saturday when they visit the Vancouver Canucks. I would come back with Brian Elliott if I was Cory Clouston but don't be surprised to see Pascal Leclaire get the nod on Saturday.

Game Day in Calgary- Elliott to Start

The Senators continue their West Coast swing tonight at the Pengrowth Saddledome in Calgary. Ottawa turned in a solid performance in Edmonton the other night and will look to keep it going against the Iginla and the Flames.

Calgary is fighting for their playoff lives right now and should provide a real tough test for Ottawa.

While there was talk about Foligno and possibly Kuba joining the Sens on this road trip, that is now pretty unlikely. Sounds like both guys could be ready to go when the Sens return to Ottawa next week.

Here are the lines from the morning skate in Calgary...

Michalek-Spezza-Alfredsson
Regin-Fisher-Kovalev
Donovan-Cullen-Neil
Ruutu-Winchester-Shannon

Chris Kelly did not take the skate this morning but according to Ian Mendes will play against the Flames.

Brian Elliott will make his second straight start.

Pretty cool stat to keep an eye on tonight. Anton Volchenkov is currently sitting at 999 career blocked shots. Although it's still a relatively new stat, 1000 blocked shots is truly an amazing number. Congrats to A-Train...

Puck drop is at 9:30 PM or 11:00 PM Newfoundland time. Gonna be a late night for me!

Sens Stick With It

Looked like one of those nights where a goalie was going to steal one. The Senators had all sorts of chances over the first 40 minutes but just couldn't find a way to beat Deslauriers. The Oilers rookie deserves full credit for his performance tongiht.

The Sens stuck with it though and were finally rewarded with a power play goal mid way through the third period. Matt Cullen one timed a pass from Erik Karlsson and finally found a way through the red hot goaltender.

Fisher scored shortly after and the Senators were in complete control from then on out.

Good to see the Senators get a couple power play goals in the third period. Should give them a little more confidence with the man advantage and maybe get that part of their game going a little bit.

The Senators should have dominated this game against the lowly Oilers and they did. If not for the heroics of Deslauriers this game could have been real ugly.

On a side note, I really like the looks of the Karlsson/Sutton pairing out there. Sutton provides a strong stay at home game and it seems to be allowing Karlsson a little more freedom on the offensive side of things.

Andy Sutton has looked very solid since his arrival in Ottawa. I knew what he brought defensively but I've been really impressed with his offensive awareness. He's never going to be a big point getter but he seems to make the right play most of the time at both ends of the rink.

Hope to see more of that pairing on this West Coast trip.

From Goose Bay

Checking in from Goose Bay!

Sorry for the late post today but I've been doing quite a bit of running around for work.

As I'm sure you've heard, Brian Elliott will get the start for the Sens tonight in Edmonton. Clouston said Leclaire can expect a game on this road trip but he's making a pretty strong statement by going with Elliott tonight.

Leclaire is coming off his first quality start in awhile and some were suggesting he may get the ball for a little bit. Obviously not the case.

Shean Donovan comes out of the line up tonight and Jesse Winchester draws back in. Here are the lines from the skate this morning...

Michalek-Spezza-Alfredsson
Regin-Fisher-Kovalev
Kelly-Cullen-Neil
Ruutu-Winchester-Shannon

I'd ask readers where a good place to watch a game in Goose Bay is but I'm thinking my options are pretty limited. Going to be in St. John's tomorrow to Sunday though so if anyone knows any good spots there, I'm all ears!

Puck drop is 10:30 PM, Goose Bay Time....I think.....

Lee Signs for Two Years

(UPDATE 9:33 PM)- Sorry for the delay in getting this up but the word is Brian Lee's extension is one way deal for 2 years at a total of $1.75 mil.

I was wondering why my Blackberry kept going off during that meeting. Thanks to all of you who gave me the heads up on this one.

According to Bruce Garrioch , the Senators have signed defenceman Brian Lee to a two year contract.

No financial details yet but it sure is interesting to see Murray extend both Ryan Shannon and Brian Lee before the season is out. Lee has had an up and down relationship with the organization this season, so this deal is kind of surprising.

Here is the link to the TSN Story accompanied by a picture of Erik Karlsson. Nice...

Sens Go West- SensChirp Goes East

The Senators were back on the ice this morning after the taking Sunday off and it sounds like guys are starting to get healthy.

The flu bug that ravaged this team over the weekend seems to have subsided a little bit with most players skating today. Here is how they lined up this morning...

Michalek-Spezza-Alfredsson
Regin-Fisher-Kovalev
Kelly-Cullen-Neil
Ruutu-Winchester-Shannon

Foligno skated by himself this morning and sounds like he's getting closer. He may actually join the team on the West Coast. The news isn't as good for Kuba who could potentially miss the entire three game road trip.

Campoli did not skate.

The Sens play the Oilers in Edmonton tomorrow night. Should be interesting to see who gets the nod in goal after Leclaire turned in a solid performance on Saturday night.

No further developments on the Anton Volchenkov front. Both sides seem a little more optimistic than before the deadline but no progress to report just yet.

The Senators may be going West this week but I'm headed East! Going to be in Newfoundland tomorrow and then stops in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Updates will be a little later than usual but I'll try to stay on top of things!

Chirp of the Week

Here is this week's winner. This "Chirp of the Week" comes from GMC and compares this year's edition of the Ottawa Senators with the team that went to the Finals back in 2007.

Interesting way of looking at things...

Heatley-Spezza-Alfredsson vs Michalek-Spezza-Alfredsson

Alfredsson isn’t the same force, but he’ still an elite ageless wonder. Spezza’s game seemed to decline until fairly recently, when he finally realized he could shoot the puck. Michalek is a downgrade in terms of goalscoring from Heatley, but brings better defense, speed and grit. Though less offensively dominant, I like the current incarnation a bit better, especially for play-off hockey (Though hopefully Michalek isn’t doubly cursed come play-off time. After all he is a former Shark. Scary.)

Cullen-Fisher-Kovalev vs Schaefer-Fisher-Comrie

Certainly a HUGE upgrade. Fisher is having his best year, Cullen is so much better in all areas than Schaefer, and Kovalev, when he wants, can do things Mike Comrie can only dream of. Again, 2010 wins it, though much more emphatically.

Foligno-Regin-Shannon vs Schubert-McAmmond-Eaves(Saprykin)

Ok, I realize I’m comparing 2010’s third line with 2007’s 4th. That’s because 2007’s 4th and 2010’s third are almost identical. Got that?
Anyway, another major upgrade. Regin lacks McAmmonds veteran status, but he often plays with veteran poise. He can do it all, and I believe that at least in terms of offensive and defensive play, he’s the next Alfie. Foligno brings more to the table than Schubert, though he sacrifices some grit. Shannon and Eaves are almost a crap shoot really. Still, once again a major win for 2010.

Ruutu-Kelly-Neil vs Vermette-Kelly-Neil

Less offense and versatility, more grit. More scoring on every other line makes up for the former. The latter is essential com play-off time. And 2010 sweeps the forward ranks.

Phillips-Volchenkov vs Phillips-Volchenkov

Phillips just seems to get better with age. His poise in his own end, and his improvements at moving the puck, make him probably the most underrated defensive defenseman in the league. Volchenkov is a beast, and everyone knows it. Obviously a draw, though i might lean towards 2010 as added experience could help out. (Note: I still believe they should be separated, putting Karlsson with Phillips and Kuba with Volchenkov, therefore spreading out the offense and defense and balancing the pairings.)

Kuba-Karlsson vs Redden-Meszaros

Kuba isn’t really a downgrade from post 2006 Redden. just MUCH cheaper. otherwise your getting the same. 30-40 point offensive minded defenseman who gets overpowered in his own zone. like-wise Karlsson and Meszaros look very similar, but I’ll give the edge to Karlsson, as despite his size, he doesn’t shy away from contact.

Sutton-Carkner vs Preissing-Corvo

So much different…gritty defense instead of steady offense. The lack of the latter was part of the 07 teams downfall…could this be this years Scuderi-Gill? I certainly hope so. If this pairing requires some mobility or offense, Campoli could step in. I’m going to call this a draw.

Elliot vs Emery

Oh how very similar these two are. Both came in as rookies and helped salvage a season, then watched as management brought in a unproven starter who was supposedly better. Then both won the number one job when the new starter faltered. But since Elliot isn’t a headcase, I’ll give him the advantage.

LeClaire vs Gerber

Both can let in agonizing softies. LeClaire has more upside, but is about as fragile as a glass Sami Salo figurine. Draw

So, if you count a win as 2 points, a draw as 1, and a loss as 0, 2010 wins hands-down. 2010: 12 2007: 3

I think we have a very good chance of coming out of the East this year.

Washington has the same problems as the Russian national team: no defense or goaltending. New Jersey is about our equal, but we could beat them in a 7 game series. We always have Buffalo’s number. Pittsburgh should be exhausted after two long play-off runs. Philadelphia has two back-up goaltenders.

If we can exploits these flaws, we could make it to our second Finals.

Leclaire Steals a Point

Three straight loses after the Olympic break. Certainly not the start the Senators were looking for out of the break.

Great energy in the building with the usual 50/50 split in attendance. It was loud all night long.

The flu is a pretty good excuse in this one so you have to hand it to the Sens for grinding out a point in this one.

A lot of the credit has to go to Pascal Leclaire. He has had a rough go of it lately but turned in a solid performance and helped Ottawa steal a point.

Ottawa is now off until Tuesday and should have some time to get healthy and ready for the Oilers as the Sens kick off a three game Western swing.

Chirp of the Week coming tomorrow...

Boo Hoo?

(UPDATE 2:29 PM)- So far just the one call up. Zach Smith will join the team and will play tonight. There was talk about calling up a bunch of guys but it sounds like a few guys will try to play through the illness.

(
UPDATE 11:57 AM)- According to Garrioch, Leclaire is likely to start tonight.

Anyone remember that last flu game against the Leafs? The entire Senators team was hit by it and could barely finish the game. The Leafs rallied that night and Owen Nolan wasn't having any of the Senators excuses.

Looks like we have a repeat of that this evening.

The team has been absolutely ravaged by the flu bug the last couple of days and it has left the team shorthanded heading into tonight's game with the Leafs.

Ruutu, Regin, and Shannon were all hit with it yesterday. Today it sounds like Elliott may have joined the sick bay because the Sens have yet to name a starting goalie for the game. Call ups are expected and one of those call ups could be a goalie.

Stay tuned. I'll post the call ups when they announce them and hopefully have an idea of what the line up will look like tonight.

Oh and...round 4?

Flu Bug Hits Sens

The Senators were back on the ice, the morning after a tough loss at the hands of the red hot Hurricanes.

Tomorrow sees the Sens match up with another cellar dweller as they host the rival Maple Leafs for a 7:00 PM puck drop. Wasn't pretty the last time these two teams met so you know Ottawa will come out hungry.

After last night's debacle you can bet that Brian Elliott will get the start. Clouston is a no non-sense kind of guy and it showed last night when he gave Leclaire the hook just 7 minutes into the game.

While those were saves you would love to see Leclaire make early in a game, he shouldn't shoulder all the blame. Defensive zone coverage was weak on both goals and has been an issue the last couple games.

The Senators were a little shorthanded at practice this morning with Ruutu, Regin, Winchester and Shannon all not on the ice. Winchester was out for personal reasons while the other three have been hit by the flu bug. Could be some call ups tomorrow to replace sick players.

No change to Filip Kuba which means he is unlikely for tomorrow night.

Post Game Wrap Up

I really hope that some of you can try and keep a level head after the loss tonight and put things in perspective. It's pretty clear this team is suffering from a post-Olympic hangover so lets just try and have a little patience.

It's a long season and absolutely EVERY team in this league goes through the highs and lows. Just need to get back to what had them rolling along before the break and they'll be fine.

With that said, criticism of the goalie is expected because this was obviously a rough outing for Pascal Leclaire. You have to wonder what the early hook will do to an already fragile psyche. This is pretty clearly Brian Elliott's job to lose right now and I really doubt we'll see much of Leclaire the rest of the way.

For the most part I liked what I saw from Andy Sutton in his Sens debut. He plays a simple game out there and keeps the opposition honest at the blue line and in front of the Senators net. Hopefully tonight was a sign of things to come for the big blueliner.

Congrats to Matt Cullen for bagging his first as a Senator. Certainly looked like his best game thus far.

Other than that a pretty weak performance from the Senators tonight in Raleigh. The team was really clicking before the break but really seem to lack any kind of chemistry in the offensive zone against the Rangers and again tonight.

They looked better in the third period but back to back loses certainly wasn't the start they were hoping for after the Olympics. Should have a good chance to get back on track on Saturday against the Leafs.

GO SENS GO!

Leclaire to Start-Donovan In

It will be a homecoming of sorts for one of the Senators recent acquisitions as Matt Cullen returns to Carolina to take on his former Hurricane teammates.

Another recent addition, Andy Sutton, will make his Senators debut tonight and will wear #5. He'll be paired with rookie Erik Karlsson to start.

The Sens will be looking to get back on track after what was a lame effort on home ice against the Rangers. The team looked rusty in their first post-Olympic tilt and will want to put in a much better effort in Raleigh.

Here are the lines from the skate this morning...

Michalek-Spezza-Alfredsson
Regin-Fisher-Kovalev
Shannon-Cullen-Neil
Ruutu-Kelly-Donovan

Phillips-Volchenkov
Sutton-Karlsson
Carkner-Lee

Filip Kuba will not play tonight but could be ready for the game on Saturday. Andy Sutton will take his spot in the line up for now. Shean Donovan takes the spot of Jesse Winchester on the 4th line.

Pascal Leclaire gets the start in the Ottawa goal.

Bryan Murray Has Done His Part

He may not have made the big splash on deadline day but Senators GM Bryan Murray has certainly done his job when it comes to getting this team ready for the NHL playoffs.

About a month ago, fans on this blog identified the Senators need for improved depth on the defence and another top 6 forward. Murray went out and filled those two needs.

While Matt Cullen hasn't gelled in his first three games, there's no doubt he will help the Senators depth up front. Cullen is a solid veteran who can play all three forward positions and has quite a bit of playoff experience.

To get Cullen, Murray gave up one of the team's second round picks and the much-maligned Alex Picard. Not bad if you ask me.

Then Murray went out and picked up the player CBSsports.com calls the NHL's top ranked defensive defenceman. There are few players in the NHL that block shots and deliver hits as often as Andy Sutton. Again, Murray was able to add without subtracting and gave up another second round pick.

The Senators now have a defence that is going to be extremely difficult to play against and has to be considered one of the most physical in the league.

The premier puck mover obviously isn't there but the team is hoping that a combination of Kuba/Karlsson/Campoli/Lee will give the team enough offence from the back end.

I know some of you will complain about giving up those draft picks but the fact is Bryan Murray has made the Senators a better hockey team and given them a chance to win come playoff time. As fans, I think that is exactly what we should expect from the general manager.

If you ask me, Bryan Murray has done his job. Now it's up to the players to perform.

Deadline Day

(UPDATE 3:39 PM)- Murray says that he did speak with a number of GM's today but didn't feel there was anything that made the team better. He's happy with the pick ups he made prior to the deadline and didn't need to do any more.

Murray also mentioned that he did receive a couple calls about Volchenkov over the course of the day. The good news is the two sides are talking about an extension and he sounds a lot more optimistic than he did the other day on the TEAM 1200.

(UPDATE 3:21 PM)- Dreger has confirmed the rumours from earlier about dsicussions with A-Train. He says that the Senators will continue to talk about a new deal for Volchenkov. Good news for Sens fans...

(UPDATE 3:06 PM)- Jay Grossman, the agent of Anton Volchenkov, has just tweeted that Volchenkov will stay with the Senators past the deadline. Interesting comment which shows that there really was a chance Volchenkov got moved today. Deadline is now passed

(UPDATE 2:52 PM)- The Capitals apparently kicked tires on Volchenkov but in the end decided to bring back Milan Jurcina. Rumour is they had an interest but the asking price was too high.

(UPDATE 2:24 PM)- Little over half hour to go till the deadline hits. Really sounded like things may come to head with Volchenkov before the 3:00 PM cut off but time is running out.

(UPDATE 1:32 PM)- There are rumours out there that an extension for Volchenkov is a possibility before the day is out. I would be surprised but we shall see...

(UPDATE 1:04 PM)- The injury to Filip Kuba is not serious but he is doubtful for tomorrow. Chris Phillips will play.

(UPDATE 12:57 PM)- There is a report on The Fourth Period suggesting that there has been some progress in talks with Volchenkov. Have not heard anything that confirms that but it's an interesting/promising rumour.

(UPDATE 12:18 PM)- Really not much to report right now. Contacts keep telling me not to let my guard down just yet but things are pretty slow right now.

(UPDATE 11:35 AM)- Division rival Boston Bruins have acquired Dennis Seidenberg.

(UPDATE 11:12 AM)- Kuba and Phillips not on the ice at practice. Matt Cullen is skating on the fourth line this morning.

(UPDATE 11:03 AM) According to Ian Mendes, new Sens acquisition Andy Sutton will wear #5 with the Ottawa Senators.

(UPDATE 10:57 AM)- Some rumours floating around right now about Brian Lee being a piece that could move today.

(UPDATE 10:47 AM)- I keep hearing rumours about Volchenkov but it's just so hard to believe Murray would actually consider moving him today. Would have to be an unbelievable offer.

(UPDATE 9:59 AM)- Word is the Vancouver Canucks would also love to add Volchenkov.
The Senators are on the ice this morning in Ottawa.

(UPDATE 9:15 AM)- Bryan Murray does not want to move Anton Volchenkov but he can count on a call from George McPhee in Washington today. They would love to add another shutdown defenceman and Volchenkov would certainly fill that void.

Everything we have heard from Murray over the last 24 hours seems to indicate he's done wheeling and dealing. Unless Murray gets an offer that blows him away, he's made his moves for this year.

In adding Matt Cullen he improved the offensive depth. By bringing in Andy Sutton he has improved the toughness on the back end and given this team one of the most physical blue lines in the league.

But the truth is, anything can happen on deadline day. This obviously won't be a crazy day on the Senators front but if Murray gets a good offer for a certain unrestricted free agent defenceman, he will absolutely consider it.

There are some other guys on this roster that could be had if the offer is right.

I'll try and be as loose with the updates as I can today but be sure to differentiate between rumours and facts! Stay tuned for updates throughout the day...

Not Pretty

Talk about a waste of great seats! Sat a few rows from the ice tonight but obviously didn't like what I saw.

Team looked flat from the get go. Chalk it up to Olympic rust, I guess.

Tomorrow should be a fun day though. Stick with SensChirp for everything trade deadline related.

Until tomorrow...

Sutton to Ottawa

(UPDATE 3:19 PM)- According Team1200, Andy Sutton will not be in the line up tonight.

(UPDATE 1:54 PM)- I leave my computer for one damn second! The Senators sent a 2nd round pick to the Isles by the way.

The Ottawa Senators have acquired Andy Sutton. More coming soon...

Back to Reality

(UPDATE 11:58 AM)- Too good to be true I guess. Lundqvist will start.

(UPDATE 11:53 AM)- Gaborik was not on the ice for the Rangers this morning. Alex Auld could get the start for NYR.

(UPDATE 11:43 AM)- According to Bruce Garrioch, the asking price for Hamhuis is a 1st round pick and a scoring winger. That seems unbelievably high...

I've got to admit it's going to feel a little strange sitting down the watch an Ottawa Senators game tonight. Feels like an eternity since we last saw our Sens in action.

But tonight, it's back to reality as the Sens host the New York Rangers. Puck drop is at 7:30 PM.

With the trade deadline just a day away, rumours and speculation are at an all time high. Yesterday's news about Anton Volchenkov really makes the next couple of days interesting.

I really get the sense that interview may have just been a negotiating tactic on Murray's part but we shall see. Everyone I've talked is saying there is a very real chance Volchenkov could be moved.

Ottawa still wants to add another body to the back end but names are being crossed off the list at a pretty good clip.

Hamhuis to Philly is apparently all but done. Leopold is a Penguin. Zidlicky is expected to re up in Minny and Grebeshkov went to the Preds.

Names like Seidenberg, Sutton, Foster and Ward are still out there so Murray still has time to shop.

Should be a busy couple of days around here so I'll try to post updates(including Game Day info) as I get them!

Murray on Team 1200- No Progress With Volchenkov

Bryan Murray was just on Team 1200. Here is a quick recap of what the Sens GM had to say with the deadline just a couple days away.

He didn't say a whole lot but he did confirm what we already know. The Senators are looking for another defenceman heading into the deadline and he's thinking a 5/6 defenceman would be ideal. Mostly looking for another body to add depth heading down the stretch.

Murray said the Senators did have an interest in Leopold but felt the asking price was a little too high. Murray mentioned that there are some players they may consider moving but it all depends on what they are getting back.

Murray spoke about Volchenkov and said they have made zero progress in negotiations. He will listen to trade offers in the next couple of days. Very surprising but understandable.

Should be a very interesting couple of days...

Trade Talk Brewing

Looks like it's going to be a crazy couple of days. The Olympics are over and the NHL roster freeze has been lifted.

The Penguins kicked things off today by acquiring Jordan Leopold. He was definitely on Murray's radar but there are other options out there.

Plenty of talk around Aaron Ward this morning. One source I spoke with said Ward is definitely a "back-up plan". Murray is still looking at a few other options, including Hamhuis and Seidenberg.

I'll post any updates as I get them.

Our Game

I don't know about the rest of you but I have never had a night quite like that one.

The Parise goal was absolutely crippling. I should have known though. A Crosby overtime winner was in the cards from puck drop and Sid delivered in a big way.
