Shannon Signs for One Year
I'll try and post more later if I can.

GO CANADA GO!
The women got there's last night and now it time for the men to do the same.
Tonight's game against Slovakia is by no means a gimme.
The Slovaks have already beaten Russia and Sweden in this tournament and have proven they are not to be taken lightly. Add in a red hot Jaroslav Halak and it's pretty clear Canada will have to be at their best tonight.
Canada will try to do the same thing to Gaborik as they did with Ovechkin. Hit him early and let him know it's going to be a long night. Same goes for Marian Hossa. Should be interesting to see how Slovakia uses Zdeno Chara and if they bother trying to match up him against any Canadian line.
Luongo will get the start. The lines have really been clicking the last couple games so there's no need for Babcock to shuffle the deck.
Puck drops at 9:30 PM Eastern time.
The Americans and Finns meet earlier in the other semi-final. Should be another terrific day of hockey.

A Quick Rumour Update
With all the excitement surrounding the Olympics, I haven't really had a ton of time to dig around the rumour mill but it does seem like a couple things are brewing for the Senators.
Murray has been active in his pursuit of a defenceman and is expected to pull the trigger on something shortly after the Olympic freeze is lifted. Hamhuis and Kubina were apparently the primary targets.
The asking price for both those guys will be high. Nashville would like to hang on to Hamhuis but if they can't get a contract done they could be forced to make a move. Kubina seems like a sure thing to move before deadline.
There are a couple lesser names that Ottawa is looking at and they include Kurtis Foster out of Tampa Bay and Dennis Seidenberg from Florida. Both would be a little more affordable and could end up being the route Murray goes.
It'll be interesting to see what happens with Volchenkov in the next few days. Contract extensions can be announced during the freeze but so far nothing seems set in stone. There has been a really weird feeling around the Volchenkov contract talks from the get go.
In the beginning, everyone just assumed it would get done. But the longer this drags on the more you have to wonder if A-Train plans on testing the free agent market this summer.
The good news is Erik Karlsson seems healthy and ready to go. He is expected to return to the line up immediately after the Olympic break.

Believe It!
Where are ya now?? Absolutely dominant performance by Team Canada tonight. Russia wasn't even in this thing.
Canada now waits to see who they will face on Friday night. Probably Sweden though (EDIT: Uhhhh maybe not? Slovakia it is!).
GO CANADA GO!!!!!
"We Want Russia"
Canada and Russia will face off in the quarter final of the Olympic hockey tournament with puck drop coming at 7:30 PM.
No words necessary really. The world will be watching tonight as two of the most powerful hockey teams on the planet go head to head. Crosby vs. Ovechkin on the biggest stage imaginable.
I can not believe how excited/nervous/terrified I am heading into this one.
That "we want Russia" chant by the fans in Vancouver has to rank up there with one of my all time favourite sports moments. Just the right amount of swagger going into this epic battle.

Just Win
We've heard the excuses, the finger pointing and all the what ifs. Well now it's time to get to work. For Team Canada, it's put up or shut up time. Four wins in six days...
There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that this group, these 23 guys, have what it takes to win Gold. They've given themselves what is likely the most difficult path to the Sunday final but it is what it is.
To win Gold, Canada will likely have to go through Germany, Russia, Sweden and then likely the United States again. They'll have to run the gauntlet of all the best teams in this tournament. But as they say, to be the best, you've got to beat the best.
And it all starts tonight against Germany...
A quick start is an absolute must tonight. Canada has to send a message to the Russians and can do that with a solid outing against the Germans. Believe me, the Russians aren't exactly thrilled with their path to gold either.
Germany is no push over but if Canada brings the same game they did against the States, this will be no contest.
Canada has made a couple line changes tonight. Crosby will line up with Staal and Iginla which means Nash will play with Perry and Getzlaf. Third line will be the Sharks trio and then a fourth line consisting of Toews, Morrow and Richards.
Keep an eye on the defence pairings tonight though. After last game I would expect Pronger to serve as the 7th guy early on. If Canada gets a lead, they may spread out the ice time a little bit to save something for a potential Wednesday quarterfinal.
The stage is set. The path to Gold is tough but it by no means impossible. It starts tonight at 7:30...
Just win...
GO CANADA GO!
-On a side note, I wanted to thank all of you for your Sports Bar suggestions the other day! I watched the tournament opener at Maclaren's on Elgin and watched the last two games at The Wood on Wellington. Undecided for tonight though.
Where will you be watching?

Luongo Will Start
Canada really needs to come out and send a message against the Germans. They need to score early and often. This game CAN NOT be 0-0 after the first period especially with so many people starting to doubt this group.
Crosby needs to play more than 20 minutes and needs to be on the top power play unit. He has to play with the same line mates from the get go and in my opinion that should be Iginla and Nash.
Canada better stick with the big guns in this one and stop with the four equal lines thing. It's not working.
And like so many have said, Chris Pronger needs to see as little ice as possible. He was brought in to provide a physical presence and has looked like the softest player out there.
The more Drew Doughty and Duncan Keith the better...
Nothing new on the Volchenkov talks by the way. As for adding a defenceman, Murray hopes to have something in place before the Olympic break is out and would like to make a move once the roster freeze is lifted.
Puck drops at 7:30 tomorrow...
GO CANADA GO!!!!!

Gotta Be Luongo
Canada dominated this game tonight but just could not get a save when they needed it and that falls on Brodeur. He was overactive all night and seemed to be guessing far too often.
Roberto Luongo has to be the guy from here on out.
The loss against the USA gives Canada a difficult route to gold which includes a game on Tuesday against the Germans and if they can win that, a quarterfinal match up with the Russians.
Could just be me but it seems like Babcock has been over coaching the whole way. Seems to be so desperate to find the perfect linemate for Crosby that he's hurting the team's best player in the process. Leave Nash and Iginla up there and let them work it out.
Pronger should not see the ice the rest of the way. To the "Pronger Sucks" guy who was always on the live blogs bashing Pronger; guess you were right!
Oh and by the way, how in the world does Babcock not call a time out after that shift from the Crosby line? You have to rest them and go back to them with the goalie pulled. No brainer...
Back at it on Tuesday! GO CANADA GO!

Chirp of the Week
Hey Senschirp/Sens Fans,
I thought I'd throw in my two cents on the situation facing Bryan Murray and this teams defence. It is obvious that our sens will not be going into the playoffs with Brian Lee as a regular on this team so we will need to acquire another defenceman before March 3rd, also Anton Volchenkov is only a little over 4 months away from unrestricted free agency and his status past this season is anyones guess.
First I'd like to thank the Russian olympic team for downplaying Volchenkov's value, they have him as a 6th defenceman and most of the time an 8TH! He is easily a top four defenceman on the russian squad.
Hopefully Murray will be able to use this and the lackluster play of Toronto's Mike Komisarek to keep Volchy's salary below 4 million per season. It is my feeling that if Anton wants 4 mill or more there may not be room on this team for him wheather we have the cap space or not, for that kind of money you need to score points.
I didn't want him to go to Vancouver this month without a contract as i am sure Alex Semin and Ovechkin are whispering in Anton's ear about how great it is to play in Washington and he may listen and wish to jump ship this off-season. If Murray feels he will lose Volchenkov this summer i would like to see him trade Volchenkov outright, to Washington march 3rd for Tomas Fleischman, a defenceman and prospects or picks.
Second, especially if we lose volchenkov, we will need a Top 4 defenceman (maybe 2). The guy i was happy about going to the olympics was Milan Michalek, I hope he and his brother (a UFA) really enjoy playing together and maybe Zybanek could be our replacement for Volchenkov. From what i understand he's just as good at blocking shots but may not throw those huge checks Volchy does.
Other options for our top four I would like to see are Hamhuis, Burns, Zidlicky or Robidas. I don't know which forwards Murray sees as movable but i would assume he is willing to part with Kelly, Shannon, Winchester and Cheechoo. The forwards I think teams are looking for are Foligno, Regin, Ruutu and Neil hopefully none of these guys are moved unless its for a marquee defenceman with term and a friendly cap hit.
Thanks for taking my Chirp, and can't wait to play the Rangers March 2nd! Go Sens Go. Oh by the way, many of you have commented on how this regular season mirrors the season the sens had in 2007 where they went to the finals, that year the Indianapolis Colts went to the superbowl and won and the sens lost in the finals. This year the Colts lost in the superbowl and the sens...

Checking In
Things are predictably quiet when it comes to the Senators right now but there is some chatter.
It's believed that Murray traveled to Vancouver to meet with the Volchenkov camp and an offer was made. No specifics regarding the actual contract but one contact suggested that the offer was looked upon favourably.
Some have even suggested something could get done shortly after the Olympic break although there is no confirmation on that.
With a lack of Senators news this would be a good time to feature a few Chirps of the Week. If anyone has one they'd like to have posted on the site you can send it to sensrumours@hotmail.com
And if you are looking for somewhere to talk Olympic Hockey, swing by GOLD RUSH.

Two More Defenceman to the List
The first is Jordan Leopold. Leopold is currently playing with the Panthers and is set to be a UFA at the end of the season. He's currently making $1,750,000 a season which makes him quite affordable. He has played 46 playoff games in his career and would be a cheap deadline add.
The other name that has come up is Kurtis Foster in Tampa. Foster is a local guy which we know Murray loves. He's a big guy with a cannon of a shot and has put up an impressive 28 points this season with the Lightning. Foster makes just $600,000 and is a UFA at the end of the year.
Both guys are great options and would be a little cheaper than the names listed the other day.
With that said, a rumour was just sent my way that suggests something will get done for one of the Minnesota defenceman. Zidlicky and Burns are the two names discussed in Minny.
Really depends on whether or not Murray wants to pay the big price for a guy like Burns or take the bargain route and go after Leopold or Foster.

Best Place to Watch Hockey?
Heading out with a couple friends tonight to watch the Team Canada game and was wondering where you think the best place to watch hockey is in Ottawa.
I know about all the usual spots (Local Heroes, Boston Pizza) but was wondering if there were any hidden gems out there I don't know about?
Is there an unofficial Team Canada headquarters out there somewhere?
Good sized TV screens is a must obviously!
Any suggestions??
Where will you be watching the game tonight?

Finding Help on the Blueline
(UPDATE 4:12 PM)- No surprise really but the Senators have returned Derek Smith and Brian Lee to Binghamton this afternoon.
With the NHL on recess for the next little while there is little left for Sens fans to do but speculate. The team has played extremely well as of late but that hasn't stopped Murray from shopping.
He has already added his top 6 forward in Matt Cullen. Next item on his list; a defenceman. For now the focus is in house, as Murray is expected to meet with Volchenkov's agent at some point this week, potentially as early as today.
But with the deadline set to fall shortly after the Olympic break, Murray is expected to add another body to the Sens back end. Here's a collection of the names out there right now. (In no particular order)
Dan Hamhuis- Probably the most likely acquisition, should the Preds decide to move him. Has been linked to Ottawa for the past couple months. UFA at season's end.
Marek Zidlicky- His name has surfaced the last little while and would bring an offensive element to the Sens blue line. Asking price would be high. Makes $3.35 mil per and is a UFA at the end of the year.
Andy Sutton- Certainly the most physical defender available and probably the cheapest acquisition on the list. Makes $3 mil this season and is also a UFA at the end of the year.
Keith Ballard- My vote for the most interesting player on this list. All around defender and signed to a decent contract. His name has come up as being available but I would be very surprised if the Panthers decided to move him.
Bryan Allen- Another interesting option out of Florida. Has two more years left on a deal that pays him $2.9 mil per.
Pavel Kubina- If the Thrashers can move Kovalchuk then they can move anyone. He's in the last year of a $5 mil a season contract and would be a UFA at the end of the season. Atlanta is just 2 pts back but he definitely could be moved.
Stephan Robidas- While I haven't heard any specific rumours about Robidas he would definitely be a solid pick up. Signed a lengthy extension at the start of the season though and seems like he is in the Stars long term plans.
Brent Burns- Murray has liked Burns for a long time. Has had concussion issues but is still a terrific young player. Not sure the Wild are ready to give up on him just yet.
These are just a few of the names out there right now. Pavel Kubina seems like the ideal rental but the asking price will be high. The good news is Karlsson will be back in the line up after the break and Campoli not long after.
Who do you like from the list? Anyone I'm missing?

Division Leaders at the Break
After 40 minutes this team looked completely lifeless. Nothing was going right for the Senators and it seemed like they'd be heading into the break on a low note. But in the third period, the Senators stars woke up...
A three point period from Kovalev and the Senators were able to escape the Island with a huge two points and the Northeast lead heading into the Olympic break.
It wasn't the prettiest of victories but you have to love the effort from the Senators in that third period. I don't know what Clouston said in the dressing room but it certainly worked.
Rough outing for AHL call up Derek Smith as he finished a -3 and was benched in the third period. It will be good to get Karlsson back after the break and dont be surprised if Murray adds another body on the back end before the March 3 deadline.
In AHL news, Jonathan Cheechoo scored in his first game with the Baby Sens. Haven't seen the highlight yet but it sounds like Cheechoo went coast to coast to score his first goal in the AHL.
It's too bad he won't be able to keep it going. Cheechoo will be taking the next two weeks off and reporting to Bingo after the Olympic break.
The NHL may be going on a break but SensChirp won't be. We'll try to keep things going here over the next couple weeks and if you're looking for a place to talk Olympic hockey, head on over to GOLD RUSH!

Cheechoo Headed to Binghamton
Cheechoo will join the Binghamton Senators later today and is expected to arrive in time for their game tomorrow at 5:00 PM.
Best of luck down there Cheech. Hope to see you back with the big club down the stretch.
Cheechoo Clears
Here is a look at the forward lines heading into tonight's game against the Wings. New acquisition Matt Cullen will make his Ottawa Senators debut tonight in Detroit.
Michalek-Spezza-Shannon
Regin-Cullen-Kovalev
Kelly-Fisher-Alfredsson
Ruutu-Winchester-Neil
Matt Cullen will wear #7. Call ups Brian Lee and Derek Smith will both dress on the Senators backend tonight. Smith will wear #51.
Brian Elliott will get the start.

Cheechoo on Waivers
Garrioch is saying that Cheechoo will not accompany the team on their upcoming road trip and is "finished in Ottawa".
Matt Cullen to Ottawa- D. Smith Called Up
The Senators have sent Alex Picard and a second round pick to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for Matt Cullen.
Solid pick up by the freshly extended Murray.
Murray Signed to Extension- Lee Called Up
Murray, the 6th general manager in team history, will stay on with the club for at least one more season.
He has taken some heat at times but Bryan Murray has done a fantastic job with this hockey team and today's extension is well deserved.
On the hockey side of things, Brian Lee has been recalled with the injury to Chris Campoli. He is expected to suit up tomorrow night in Detroit. The injury to Campoli is apparently serious and will keep him out until at least after the Olympic break.
Good chance for Brian Lee to get back into the line up

Game Day vs. Capitals
Puck drops at 7:00 PM at SBP.
Washington's loss doesn't change the fact that Ovechkin and his mates are the hottest team in the NHL right now. With the way the Sens have been rolling as of late, the match up is about as good as it gets.
The Senators will go with the same line up that beat Calgary the other night. Brian Elliott will start in goal. Here is a look at the forward line combinations...
Michalek-Spezza-Cheechoo
Kelly-Fisher-Alfredsson
Kovalev-Regin-Shannon
Ruutu-Winchester-Neil
One of the rumours out there today is again about Marek Svatos out of Colorado. Clouston likes the winger and apparently the Avs have an interest in Brian Lee.
Personally, I'm not sure I like the idea of bringing in Svatos. Would replacing Cheechoo with Svatos really be an upgrade at this point in the season? Svatos has a cap hit of over 2 million a season and has scored just 6 times this season.
To me this seems like making a deal just for the sake of making a deal. Really doesn't make sense for a team with chemistry as good as this team has right now.
I dunno. Not crazy about this one. The rumour is definitely picking up steam though.

Cheechoo Shines in Win Over Flames
Really loved the effort from the Senators tonight. This was a big win for the team after having their winning streak snapped on the weekend.
Ottawa is now tied with Buffalo for the Northeast lead but the Sabres have a couple games in hand.
The Flames have been a bit of a disappointment this season but a win over them on home ice is still impressive. Calgary has a solid line up and were expected to be a force in the Western Conference.
After all the Cheechoo talk in here the last couple of days it was nice to see him have what was probably his best game as a Senator. I know many of you argue he isn't cut out for the top 6 anymore but he really seems to have something with Spezza and Michalek.
If they are going to get any value out of Cheechoo on this team he has to be given a chance to succeed. While he has done a good job as a bottom 6 guy, his skill set is more appropriate for a line mate like Spezza.
Really liked what I saw from Cheechoo tonight and hopefully he gets a chance to build on that Thursday night.
I've had a ton of people ask about the Lecavalier possibility and honestly I can't see it. Vinny has a huge contract and really wouldn't fit given the current cap situation.
For what it's worth, I haven't heard anything specific from any contacts relating to Vincent Lecavalier.
Until tomorrow...
Elliott to Start
Sorry about the late post today as I've been in and out of meetings all morning.
If it was up to me Id be going to the meetings in my jersey. Ill be representing Sens Army in Calgary tonight though.
No other line up changes expected for the Senators.
Nothing really new on the rumour front but I did have one person suggest that Ray Whitney remains a real option for the Sens.
The asking price will be high for the Hurricanes winger.
Ill be back with a post game wrap up later tonight.

Off to Calgary!
I should be able to keep things up to date while I'm gone though.
Just wanted to pass along a quick rumour that was sent my way this morning. Word is the Senators continue to shop defenceman Brian Lee along with forward Jonathan Cheechoo. With his price tag, Cheechoo isn't drawing a whole lot of interest.
There was a rumour floating around last week that the Kings may be willing to take a chance on him but I haven't been able to confirm their level of interest.
If they can't find a suitable trade then they are more than willing to hang on to him for the rest of the season.
I think I have made my feelings on Cheechoo pretty clear this season. I love the guys work ethic and by all accounts he's an excellent team player. I get the feeling that given the opportunity, Cheechoo is going to score some big goals for this team down the stretch.
I'll update again once I'm on the ground in Calgary...

Chirp of the Week
Anyway, here it is...
We NEED Leclaire
Okay, first of all let me just say that Brian Elliott has been great lately (last night doesn't change that) and should be commended. Brodeur before him as well. I’m not trying to put either of them down with this post. Also, I have never played goal (except in street hockey) so if any real goalies want to chime in with feedback or other points of view I’d be happy to read that.
My point, is that as solid as Elliott has been lately, if we hope to win a couple of rounds in the playoffs this spring we NEED Leclaire to be the man in goal. I know his play has been way below expectations this season overall, but I think there’s a few reasons for that.
Watching him play early this season, he was what we had expected. He made some flashy saves and kept us in most games. The couple of soft goals he gave up could be written off to rust and getting back his rhythm etc. But not too far into the season, our defensemen (Karlsson, Lee, Picard, Campoli mostly) started to show problems.
This is where the trouble started. I think both goalies - but mostly Leclaire - felt they had to be spectacular to keep us in games. This lead to Leclaire cheating on most rushes and leaving his post too soon etc.
Both guys were guilty of it but I think Leclaire more so. Maybe Eli Wilson is to blame in part as well – who knows? But the end result was the Leclaire got so far away from fundamentals that he was letting in a couple of soft goals per game it seemed.
Fast forward to Brodeur’s emergency start. I think a few things happened. First off, Brodeur probably thought to himself “just don’t look stupid out there”. In other words, make the simple saves, don’t worry about odd man rushes or missed assignments in front of him.
At the same time, the team in front of him seemed to finally realize they needed to play a strong system game to give the goalie a chance. So Brodeur was “solid” and we won. Then he was “solid” again and we won again. Then Elliott took over and all he had to focus on was being solid and we kept winning.
Keep in mind that a lot of people wanted to stick with Brodeur before Elliott came back since Elliott had been brutal up until then – but look how that turned out.
When Leclaire comes back, if he just focuses on being solid I think we’ll keep winning (not every game of course).
Then as the team gains confidence in him and he gains confidence in the team and himself, he can continue to be solid for the most part but also show flashes of brilliance when needed. This is where Leclaire is different from Elliott – Leclaire can be brilliant when he needs to be. The only thing is he needs to be solid first.
Everyone agrees that a goalie needs to steal a few games for you to go anywhere in the playoffs. I think Leclaire stands a better chance of stealing games than Elliott does. He just needs to be as “solid” as Elliott has been lately to ensure he doesn’t cost us as many games as he steals.

Streak Snapped at Eleven
The Ottawa Senators just didn't have it tonight and the Leafs took it to them on route to a convincing 5-0 victory.
Really no need to point fingers after a game like this one.
The Leafs were a hungry team tonight and turned in a solid performance on home ice. Penalties killed Ottawa in the early going and really killed any chance at getting into the hockey game.
It was a good run for the Senators and the 11 game winning streak was one that will go down in history for this franchise. It's tough to have it come to an end at the hands of the Leafs but that's just the way it is.
The good news is the Penguins, Sabres and Devils all lost tonight so the Senators are still knocking on the door for the division lead.
Interesting rumour from satellite Hotstove that we have head about in the past. The Sens may have an interest in Marek Svatos who is available. He played for Clouston in Junior and isn't expected to fetch much more than a draft pick.
The Senators are back to Ottawa tomorrow afternoon for their annual team Skills Competition and are back in action Tuesday when they host the Calgary Flames.
GO SENS GO!
Sens Shoot for Twelve
The Senators come into tonight's action just a single point back of the division leading Sabres.
The Leafs played last night and really took one on the chin against the Devils. Toronto was in control most of the way, until three last minute goals swung the game in New Jersey's favour.
Gustavsson started last night so it should be Giguere getting the call tonight. Brian Elliott will obviously get the nod for the Senators.
The shoulder injury to Erik Karlsson means that Alex Picard will draw back into the Ottawa line up. That's the only line up change expected. Here's a look at how they lined up this morning according to James Gordon...
Michalek-Spezza-Alfredsson
Shannon-Fisher-Kovalev
Ruutu-Kelly-Neil
Cheechoo-Regin-Winchester
I actually had a couple of interesting rumours sent my way over the course of last week, despite the team's exceptional play of late. The first had the Senators targeting both Paul Kariya AND David Perron from St. Louis.
Details were sketchy as to who Ottawa might include in a deal but you would have to think the price would be pretty steep to acquire both. To be honest, I can't see Ottawa pulling off a move of this magnitude.
They were mildly involved in the Kovalchuk sweepstakes but weren't offering anything near what the Thrashers wanted.
The other rumour had a little more of a long term element to it but could factor in with the deadline just around the corner. Had a contact suggest to me that one of Chris Phillips, Anton Volchenkov or Filip Kuba will not be back next season.
It's hard to know how to take that. Phillips and Kuba are both under contract for next season, Volchenkov is a UFA. Ottawa would love to get Volchenkov signed but progress in the negotiations has been extremely limited thus far.
Lastly, the hockey world has been rocked by the tragic death of Brendan Burke, son of Leafs GM Brian. My thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Burke family during what must be an incredibly difficult time.

Headed Home!
My trip to Vancouver has taken a little more of my time than I had anticipated.
As I'm sure you've all heard, Erik Karlsson is expected to miss the rest of the pre-olympic games. Too bad because Karlsson was playing his best hockey of the season
I am on board the flight now though and headed home.
We'll be back up and running tomorrow to set up the tilt with the Leafs.

Game Day vs. Canucks
As nice as Vancouver is, I miss my Senators already. Hope to have a chance to catch the Canucks/Senators game this evening but work could make it tough.
However, I did have a chance to watch the game on tape delay and was obviously impressed with the game of Alfredsson and Spezza. Each chipped in with two goals and were a consistent threat over the final forty minutes.
Elliott was huge when he had to be (the 1st period) and the kid Erik Karlsson made another unbelievable play on the winner. Just how good is this kid gonna be?
The Senators will not skate this morning so line up notes will come later this afternoon. Don't expect any changes.
While this is traditionally a rumour filled time of year, you can understand why Bryan Murray isn't overly eager to make a deal.
Everything is going right for this team and much of that has to do with everyone buying into the team concept. Gotta be careful not to disrupt the chemistry this group has right now.
GOALTENDING CONSULTANT
The Senators can be forgiven for not jumping to hire a goalie coach to replace the fired Eli Wilson. The team has been hummin' along lately and much of that has to do with the improved goaltending.
With that said, the Senators have brought in John Stevenson to be a goaltending consultant for the team. Stevenson is a currently the goalie coach in Saskatoon (WHL) but has been working with the goalies in Bingo.
Clearly the Senators are in no rush to hire a permanent goalie coach.

Game Day vs. Buffalo (Prospect Update)
(UPDATE 9:22 AM)- I've had a couple of you ask about the prospect update so I thought I would pass it along. I usually try to get it on the site as soon as it becomes available but missed it this week.
PROSPECT UPDATE
I still can't believe tonight's game will start at 4:00 PM for me. That must take some getting used to for West Coast hockey fans.
Anyway, the Ottawa Senators will look to build on a franchise record 9 game winning streak tonight, when they visit Ryan Miller and the Buffalo Sabres.
The Sabres still have a pretty comfortable lead on the Senators in the Northeast division but a win today would go a long way towards vaulting Ottawa back into this chase.
The Sens are currently 5 back of the Sabres but Buffalo has a couple games in hand.
With the injury to Nick Foligno, Jesse Winchester will draw back into the line up and skate on the team's fourth line. Here's a look at the rest of the line up
Michalek-Spezza-Alfredsson
Regin-Fisher-Kovalev
Ruutu-Kelly-Neil
Shannon-Winchester-Cheechoo
Brian Elliott gets the nod in goal.

Checking in From Vancouver
Gotta get up at the crack of dawn to make my usual 10-11 AM post. Anyway, I'll be in meetings most of the day today so I thought I would post something now before I head out.
The Ottawa Citizen is reporting that the Ottawa Senators will make a bid for the NHL All Star game in the near future. Ottawa is hoping to host the game in 2012. The Senators will make a formal proposal for city support this afternoon.
I've been doing some digging on the Minnesota front and it does sound like Andrew Brunette is their target. Still not convinced the Wild will move him but Ottawa is interested.
Ottawa will also take a look at Ray Whitney but the asking price is expected to be too high.
As we've said here before, Murray would like to upgrade his defence as well but the play of Erik Karlsson has made that situation less desperate.
On the ice, it's another off day for the Sens as they get prepared to visit the Sabres tomorrow afternoon err I mean night. 4:00 Pm start on the West Coast.
Anyway, bear with me this week folks. It's tough to keep on top of this thing while I'm away from the computer but I will have my blackberry with me should anything break.

Up and Running from Vancouver
Anyway, it has been a relatively slow day in Senators land anyway. Pascal Leclaire is ready to return to the Ottawa line up but as a back up for now.
That is decision is an easy one with the recent play of Brian Elliott. For the second straight week, Elliott was among the NHL's stars of the week, this time grabbing the second star.
Elliott was 3-0 with a 0.98 GAA and a .964 save percentage.
His return means that Mike Brodeur has been assigned to Binghamton. Brodeur made quite an impressing during his stint here in Ottawa and deserves some of the credit for the Senators recent turnaround.
On the rumour front, the Brian Lee talk remains at the forefront. As I mentioned last week, Ottawa is trying to package Lee together with a forward from the current roster to get an upgrade up front.
Minnesota remains the most likely destination.
The sense I get is that while Ottawa won't be overly active at the deadline, they are expected to make some sort of addition.
