Looks like it's going to be a crazy couple of days. The Olympics are over and the NHL roster freeze has been lifted.
The Penguins kicked things off today by acquiring Jordan Leopold. He was definitely on Murray's radar but there are other options out there.
Plenty of talk around Aaron Ward this morning. One source I spoke with said Ward is definitely a "back-up plan". Murray is still looking at a few other options, including Hamhuis and Seidenberg.
I'll post any updates as I get them.

Ward ? What the ****
Can the SENS still sign Volch to a contract even if they have no plans on keeping him. Say trade him at the draft or during the summer. Is there anything keeping them from doing that or does the cap for next year prevent them from doing that?
hat are the chances he gets traded before Wednesday?
Id go for Seidenberg
I'd like to see Cory Stilman and SeindenBerg come our way.
Seindenberg would be a great pickup, Hamhuis would be AWESOME!
There's also some talk that Minny is having trouble signing Zidlicky and might trade him if they can't lock him up before Wednesday.
I hope Karlsson comes back where he left off as that gives our backend a whole new look. IMO we need a big mobile D who is good in transition and plays hard down low. After Phillips and Volch, we don't really have that (Carkner is not what I'd call mobile).
To that end, I'd love Kubina but I'm not sure Atlanta will move him.
Ward.... jesus I sure hope not. That guy is so done it's not even funny. He's completely useless. I mean obviously we'd only be giving up like a 4th-6th rounder for the guy as a depth D-Man. He'd be brought in to be the 7th guy I suppose. Backup in case Carkner goes down with an injury and we still need a physical presence in the lineup. Hopefully we get Siedenberg though. I like his game a lot. Pretty solid and good on the PP especially last year for Carolina. Hell if we could get Anton Babchuk out of the KHL at some point we could re-unite them. Those two guys leaving the Canes had brutally hurt their PP especially Anton.
Aaron Ward would help with the defensive side of the game and his experience, but what we really need is a puck mover. We already have Phillips, Volchenkov, Carkner for defensive dmen. Something to add to Kuba and Karlsson would be awesome (i.e. an upgrade over Campoli and Lee if possible).
Ward??? i believe "ugh" is the appropriate response. I would much rather have Lee and Campoli in the 6th and 7th spots.
Unless of course we have a secret strategy that involves the use of a pylon. In that case, do whatever it takes to get Ward!
A Big pass on ward and Stillman...
Next...
I agree with anon 11:51, we need a puck-mover not another big body back there. Ward maybe as some insurance is fine but we still need someone who can make the odd play.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Just a thought.
You should get mobile updates or something like that. people can sign up for it and then can get the updates you make on there moblile phone. im not sure if there is already one and again just thinking out loud.
Ward makes sense, he's a Murray type of guy...no talent, over 30, from Ottawa and a good character guy.
I await with bated breath the news we've traded a first rounder for this overdone lump of flesh.
Hoping for Zidlicky or Hamhuis
We're nowhere near the cap yet for next year (in signed players). All the cap rule states is that you can't be over for the following season - you can be barely under with only 12 players signed if you want but of course you'd need to move players out to sign the additional players before the season starts.
That's the situation the Hawks were very close to.
So in answer to the question above: We could potentially sign Anton for $8M per year if we wanted to and trade him in the summer (of course, nobody would take him at that price but you get what I'm saying).
I agree with some of you Seidenberg or Hamhuis are the right guys to get...
Ward is useless.
Man, waiting for a trade to possibly go down is nerve-wracking. I'm constantly running back to my office every 30 minutes to refresh Senschirp and TSN.
That said, I'd rather BM not make a move for Ward, unless the asking price for other possibilities is too high and he gets Ward for a (very) late draft pick.
Seidenburg does seem like the most viable option, but it seems so much depends on Android's contract status.
Suspense is killing me...
If Ward is the back up plan I would far rather see them go and get Adrian Aucoin. He is a better back up plan IMO and I would think might cost around the same...NOTE that is ONLY if BM has to resort to a back up plan. I am sure there are better D then both but I am just comparing Ward to Aucoin.
As a rumour monger (sp?), I hope we see a trade that no one has speculated about -- a la Cullen a few weeks ago (did anyone really see that coming?!?.
BM seems to keeps his real intentions close to his chest, and maybe he is 'planting' some rumours in order to get the focus off what his real targets are (i.e., he isn't interested in Ward).
All in all... the next few days will be a lot of fun. TM
What about Barret Jackman? Would be a great physical Dman.. Dallas put Auld on waivers so dos'nt look like Turco is going anywhere...
That leaves Vokoun???????
If that's the price for Leopold...how much is hamhuis going to cost?
And I'm starting to think this Volchenkov situation will have me "Chara walks for nothing" sick when it's all said and done.
Foster Foster Foster!!!
Im hoping Murray goes after some hom-grown talent, as he has done in the past!
Low salary...Cant go wrong for 600k or so. Plus, he has a bomb of a shot.
Maybe we could grab him for a 3rd rounder?
so Bruce said Murray was going for a PMD...but most of the defensemen mentioned are all stay at home type guys...
Chirp, have you heard what type of defenseman he is looking for?
How about Pothier? apparently available...knows the guys...PMD who is at top 4 guy.
Here's what I'd like to see:
To Dallas:
-Pascal Leclaire
-Anton Volchenkov
To Ottawa:
-Marty Turco
-Stephane Robidas
I think Leclaire is done here and I don't really see how he fits anymore. Turco is at his last year and is a solid goalie with playoffs experience so in case Elliott chokes in the playoffs we have a goalie that we can actually trust and is not injury proned.
As for Robidas, he is signed for a few years and is a solid D. I'd much rather have Robidas than Volchenkov on my team. Volchenkov is great not worth more than 3 mill-year. He'll probably compare his next contract to Komisarek's and Commodore and it would be a big mistake to sign him in that range. You can't expect to sign for big millions if you can't score at all.
I love Foster - but why on earth would tampa trade him?????
hmmm - competing for a playoff spot, Let's trade our Lowest Paid/Leading D point getter. That makes sense.
Trading Leclaire for anything besides a long-term starting goaltender is completely crazy.
Elliott, while good, is clearly not an elite goaltender and though Leclaire has not been good, he has the potential to be a long term number 1. So unless we want to continue having goaltending problems for years to come, stop suggesting trading Leclaire
aaron ward SUCKS!!!!!!!! Not him please haha
No Burns anymore? That talk seemed to die pretty quick. Also Math..Leclaire is 150Xs better than Turco. Leclaire didn't all of the sudden start to suck. He'll be back.
I agree that Foster is worth his salary for Tampa. Hopefully Ottawa can sign him in the off season if they can get a good price.
As for the Dallas proposal I don't see Dallas going for that trade at all. Volchenkov is a UFA so they may loose him for nothing, and getting Leclaire is not what they need since they just got Lehtonen. Although that would be a nice trade for Ottawa if it happened.
I think Volchenkov gets traded (unfortunately) but we will get a decent return.
Go Sens Go
Riaz
I doubt a sign and trade happens with Volchy. Muckler did that with Hossa so if he re-signs here Volch will want a NTC for the first season or so at the very least.
The Foster trade is a good idea. He has some upside but I really like Math's take...the "Math" works if you'll pardon the pun. Leclaire can't function here under the intense scrutiny. In Dallas he could do great and blossom away from the media glare. Robidas is solid, but unspectacular.
Honestly, I'd be happy if Murray did nothing. He's overly enamored of over 30 players on the decline. This team likely isn't getting past the second round, doubtful past the third so don't sell the farm. This is still NJ, Pitt or Wash's conference to lose.
Go SENS!!!
Some guy on the radio this morning said there was going to be a deal that would move Spezza out west, I really can't see that happening.
IMO if we trade Volchenkov, hopefully it will give us the pieces to acquire someone like Burns.
Also if 24 is leaving, we might as well reconstruct our backend, especially with the youth movement coming into the system over the next couple years.
As of now, the only 2 defenders who have chemistry are Phillips and Volchenkov. So I say trade Volchenkov if he wont sign and use the pieces to make our D look like this:
Phillips Karlsson
Burns Robidas
Seidenberg Carkner
As it stands, I think we have the pieces to acquire both Robidas and Seidenberg, but the cost might be more than most fans expect.
And in the off season go after Z. Michalek.
I'd take Math's trade offer...if turco resigned for a year. I'd definitely hand him the reigns as well. (no offense Elliot).
I still think Vokoun would be our best bet but not sure what it would take to get him.
Can we trade with another team other then Carolina? Other then Heaters going to SJ, it seems like Carolina and Ottawa just swap back and forth.
any update on the potential MATS SUNDIN signing?
will the sens still have the presser at 5pm today or do you know if they already canceled it and if so will it be tomorrow morning?
when the hell are we going to hear about A-train?
Seidenberg.
The only reason you heard Robidas name come up in trade rumours is because Dallas thought they didn't have enough money but it turns out they are making it work, trust me Dallas will not be parting with Robidas even though i would love him in Ottawa and as for Turco he would be amazing, one of the best puck handling goalies in the league but not sure what Dallas has planned for him but can pretty much guarantee Ottawa will not be making any moves for a goalie!
tomb
I dont want to lose Volchenkov. Period.
He loves Ottawa and I think he will sign.
Like Neil, I think he'll test the waters to see what others think he's worth but I don't see him leaving Ottawa.
And why the hell would we want Stillman? Didn't we already have him and trade him?
Chirp, Steve Staois / Cogliano to OTT for...???
I'm very doubtful that Volchenkov goes anywhere...and I'm also thinking that any trade Murray makes in the next 48 hours will come right out of nowhere, probably someone that hasn't even been considered as an option yet.
I definitely think he's going to make a trade for an impact defenseman, but I don't know who yet, and I'm betting that it's a shocker.
Did you not hear that Murray said before the Olympics that he would NOT trade Volchenkov? So he won't be going anywhere right now. If he is not signed by the draft -- he may trade his rights then.
I prefer a younger defenseman than Aaron Ward.. let's wait to see what Murray does if anything. We do need something on defense now.
Spezza and Volchenkov to the Oilers for Staios, Moreau, Smid, and the Oilers' 1st rounder.
That should get the discussion started?!
Spezza will be dealt to Edmonton.
BOOK IT!
Hearing that Spezza is on the block.
It's the right time. He has a NTC at the end of the year. He has been performing very well. He will get a great return. Murray wants to move on from the Pizza line days a build a winner in the next few years.
I can't see Spezza waiving a NTC to go to Edmonton...thought his clause kicked in this past summer?
Not a Flames fan, but my sympathies to all Flames fans on this difficult day.
Darryl Sutter just gave Matt Stajan $3.5 a year for four years. WTF.
Matt Stajan? $3.5M!!!
They say the trade deadline is silly season. Well, Sutter has officially opened the season.
The guy trades Phaneuf for scraps. I thought that was a salary dump, so I cut him some slack. Then he gives a big chunk of that savings to Stajan.
I hope the Sens don't participate in silly season.
Spezza isn't going anywhere lol...we're stuck with him until 2014. Hopefully he will accomplish something in the post-season by then, who knows.
Anon @ 3:19 pm that trade is at first glance brutal. Staios is a good energy guy worth 40-50 points, Ehtan Moreau is average and Smid is pretty decent. I mean, I don't like Spezza but I'd like a legit forward back for him...
I'd rather lose one of Kelly, Neil or Ruutu or Fisher over Spezza, and I'd be jumping for joy if we got rid of Spezza. It would just rock the room too much if a piece like that left.
I like the idea of Kubina or Robidas. Thats all we need really is one more 2 way d-man. Not these randoms like Foster, Seidenberg or Aaron Ward.
Danny Syvret just got put on waivers by the Flyers. at $500K a year why don't Murray pick him up...decent offensive defensement for that price.
What a terrible trade.....
Why?????? Why would you trade spezza and volchenkov like the sens are a shit team thats not going to make the play-offs...
Why does everyone want to shake things up so much???
wow Murray says he is NO WHERE with Volch camp basically says he will listen to offers on team 1200
anon 3:19, NO THANK YOU, NO THANK YOU, NO THANK YOU AAANNNNNND NO THANK YOU.
hey sens fans,
like many of you i was alerted to bruan murray being on team 1200 at 3:25 just a moment ago via twitter. When asked about where he is with volchenkov he said quote, "Nowhere.". He went on to say that he talked to volchy's agent today and didnt like what he heard. He did not say he would not trade volchenkov, saying he just aquired a UFA to make the team better, meaning he doesnt need to drop UFA's as he is trying to make a push in the playoffs. He did say he would see what the market dictates volchy's value was in the next 2 days... dum dum dummmmmmmmm.
C-Mac
BM stays away from the sunshine teams SJ Dalles LA etc for good reason them players wifes don't want to come to this part of the cunrty they get all pissy and it efects the players.
I would stick with what we have lets just hope l
Lee picks up his game, let Vol go at the end of the summer. Trades are not kind to Ottawa
Letting Volchenkov go for nothing at the end of the summer is absolutely retarded...if there is no deal in place by the the deadline he has to be moved.
As shitty as that is.
3.5 is fine for Stajan.
He's a 50-70 point guy, young and will be with Iginla on his wing occasionally. That deal is not unreasonable in either term or length. Don't see Matt as an 80-100 point guy. He's a 50-70 with decent defensive skills. That's worth 3.5, which is what...second or third line player salary these days?
Spezza moving on would be great for this team. He's just not very serious about hockey or life in general (Yes, he's married but he giggles after every question and during every comment...the guy has some growing up to do)and he's easy to defend in the playoffs. If we could get a serious piece back you do it.
C'mon people! The Spezza bashing again?!?
Some of you have nothing better to do.
He's not going anywhere. If you can't live with that, just throw yourselves off the Palladium exit bridge. You won't be missed.
Don't do that, traffic is bad enough.
Johnny:
You're right. I should've said to go lie down on the O-train tracks. No one cares about traffic going to Farrhaven... :)
