(UPDATE 3:19 PM)- According Team1200, Andy Sutton will not be in the line up tonight.
(UPDATE 1:54 PM)- I leave my computer for one damn second! The Senators sent a 2nd round pick to the Isles by the way.
The Ottawa Senators have acquired Andy Sutton. More coming soon...

I bet it's a 3rd or 4th round pick at best. It might even be lower than that. Clearly just a depth pick-up. This probably signals that Murray was not willing to pay the asking price for the more premium guys. I'd expect Ottawa is all done now unless A-train forces our hand.
Guess we got our D man and we are done. I wonder what round the pick is in?
What!...
Great breaking that Chirp~
first.
Sutton for a pick. Its official
sweet - keep your heads up when Sutton and Carkner are on the ice!
any word on what we gave up?
SC, is this a good thing? Not giving up any roster players is fine by me? But how good is this guy?
for a second round pick. Okay I guess.
For a late draft pick. I don't mind this trade at all. Adds depth to the back end at a relatively cheap price
More to come, I'm sure...
ewww..
Wooo. We need that nastiness
Yikes. Apparently the pick is a second rounder. At least we still have our first but it seems like an overpayment for the kind of guy that is a dime a dozen. Ridiculous history of ankle/foot injuries too.
eww
I would like to see Murray get Andrew Ladd
I would also like to see Murray make a trade:
Like it to look like this:
To Atlanta:
Winchester
2nd rounder
To Ottawa:
Colby Armstrong
Kubina
I would like to see Murray make a trade tomorrow for either of them.
I really don't think that Andy Sutton is worth a 2nd Draft Pick. We always seem to over pay when we trade with the Islanders, just like last year.
for a second...yikes
Oh no!
What did we give up???
price seems steep...a second round pick for sutton
Nice toughness move, but if TSN is right with the 2nd round pick, I think it's a bit expensive
Capouel
Great pick up! Thanks again Chirp
Great... heres how fan 590 describes sutton
he's a big body, can't skate very well, and can't pass very well
Way to go BM, more dead weight
don't know if I like this.
we gave a 2nd round pick
Andy Sutton:
4 goals, 8 assists, 73 PIM's this year with the Isle's..
not a bad pickup at all..
Im sure this is just the beginning
I heard for a 2nd rnd pick? That seems steep for Sutton. I like his size and what he can bring in terms of depth on the D, but that seems a lot to give up.
He's a big body whose been around the league. 6'6, 245 with a cannon from the point. Think BM is done tinkering with our D or do you think he still has something up his sleeve?
A 2 rounder for sutton same kinda defencman as volch something fishy
san jose's second?
he leads the league in combined hits and blocked shots....huge dude that will clear the crease with ease.
Second seems a bit steep, but that won't make a damn difference in the playoffs this year.
funny, I saw this here and it was on WIKIPEDIA before tsn had it up!
I dunno about this one, could help with out depth but he is old, has an expiring contract, gets zero points, and has only played 4 playoff games with ATL when they were swept. What do yall think?
Sutton has more blocks and hits then A-Train....
Yep it's the San Jose 2nd rounder.
San Jose's second.
Oh man... a 2nd rounder does seem steep. Does this pave the way for a Volchenkov trade?
this means volch is being moved because theyre basically the same player.
this is good, we havnt hurt the roster too much, and we'll come out of it with whatever we get for Atrain.
Good move BM.
Now we don't have any 2nd round pick left. Gotta be something else coming soon.
Great put up or shut up tactic by The Bryan. It puts the heat on Volchy's agent. Volchenkov is now tradable.
Considering Dominic Moore and Jordan Leopold fetched 2nd round picks, this seems to be the price for depth players this year
you'll need to hold it for the next 25 hours SC.
If it's SJ 2nd round pick that is basically a 3rd round pick. Maybe BM is planning on trading some guys for picks in the summer?
Wasn't sure about this, but then I remembered how bad we got bullied every year in the playoffs.. Not this time! Good pickup for a LATE 2nd rounder
Yes it was for SJ second. So will be late round 2.
He's more for experience I suppose.. as we are lacking in that. Also something in case of more injuries on D.
2nd round pick was the going rate for D it appears. There were not too many D available -- so Murray made the move now to get a least somebody.
Is he through? Who knows. It appears he will not trade Volchy based on his last comments....
I don't think he wants to mess with the chemistry too much
Not a fan at all of giving up another 2nd but I dont know much about Sutton so I figure I will hold off judging until the playoffs
Too much for Sutton. We have a hell of a tough/big blue line now though.
Yeah, Second round pick is a little high but that seems to be the going rate this year for a D-man, Pens, Preds and now Ottawa all using there Second round pick. Do you think this is a prelude to another deal in the works if we can not sign A-Train?
I would like to see:
Anton Volchenkov
Brian Lee
Pascal Leclaire
For:
Dennis Seidenberg
Tomas Vokoun
Pitts 2nd Rounder
Bye Anton.
If Sutton gets a 2nd, AV should fetch much more.
Honestly, I would trade Anton now, because I dont think he is resigning. In the off-season I would assess my options as to who's available. Not sure if Sutton would be good to re-sign, but others could be available.
Nice, a 6'6 245 lb d-man who is freakishly strong and mean. When we played the isles last he played on the penalty kill, power play and when they pulled the goalie. Definetly a good pick up.
Also as per Bob McKenzie's twitter account, Ryan jones among a bunch of other players were put on waivers today. The Sens should definetly pick him up if he hasn't been claimed by the time the sens have the option to put in a claim. He would be like another foligno on our team, possibly even better.
Doubt the sens are done yet, we might still add another d-man or forward.
hes not worth a 2nd, but maybe he's getting one back by trading a forward or d-man package.
So the heatley trade is now Michaluk, Sutton, and a 1.75M buyout? Great!
im happy with this. i like andy sutton, hes really skilled, hits well, blocks shots. a cap hit of 0.637 mil and is a ufa after this year. Good move. Still have .880 mill to do something, should we feel the need. (dan hamhuis is 2 mil btw...) Wonder If Murray is Done...
(#s according to nhlnumbers.com)
don't care for the trade personally, but whatever.. its done
I like that Sutton is from Kingston.
Expensive!!!
I like that Sutton is from Kingston.
Will he play for Ottawa tonight ?
I'd like to see karlsson and sutton together. Karlsson could learn how to be more physcial with skill, as well as skilled offensively and defensively. Great pickup, good price.
I can't help but wonder if Murray is trying to boost the market price for Anton by overpaying for Sutton.
Anon 2:04 its people like you that give Anon's a bad name. I'm sensing something big coming though with Volchenkov hopefully we can get rid of Cheechoo too.
Freakin exciting man!!! GO SENS GO!!!!!!!
So what you're saying is we could have had Leopold for essentially the same thing as Sutton?
Sutton reminds me of Hal "Skill"... I mean Gill.
Tall, slow and useless.
BM still have fond memories of his group of small D's getting pushed around by the Ducks in the 06-07 Cup final. He knows the rules are changing in the playoffs and no one will be able to stand in front of our crease for very long with Phillips/A-Train/Carkner/Sutton.
I like it.
As for A-Train, I have a feeling he will stay.
Seidenberg has more blocked shots, only 22 less hits, half the giveaways and double the points! Murray should have got Seidenberg instead!!!
sad to say but the train is going to be leaving Ottawa seems like an overpayment but I'm sure that whatever volch gets back will more than offset
Wow...
I think most of you are right. Bryan Murray is shopping Volchy around. If this is the case, I hope he can get a first line PMD and our second rounder back cause Sutton is not worth the loss of that pick IMO. I'm not going to be happy to see Volch go. (Why are Russians so greedy?? You never see them take home town discounts.)
On the flip side, where does Sutton fit on the team if Volchenkov stays? Is he really better than Karlsson, Campoli or Carkner? I don't think so.
And Sutton is a UFA at the end of the season and is getting paid 3.5 right now. How much is Volchy asking that we can't pay him?
It's obvious Bryan is not done and this is my one and only beef with him: Too much tinkering...
Murray just got finished saying he felt a 2nd rounder was an overpayment for leopold! Is he on crack? I'd rather leopold for a 2nd than sutton, sometimes I just don't get what's goin through that mans head
It's the only 2nd round pick left people!
GREAT MOVE! I love it. Size hurts!
Will the COLBY ARMSTRONG guy please stop. obaody wants thaty guy! Must be his brother putting in his 2 cents worth. haha
We have Ruutu don't need ARMSTRONG!
GOOD MOVE MURRAY!
Great Move.. heard Liam on the team last week talking about him. just Youtube him.. very very mean, and a deadly hitter.. we do not have enough predatory hitters on the back end.. now.. just go get Torres.. there is still cap room left.. !!!!
A) for leopold, they were asking for a second + something from ottawa, (because the second rounder was late).
B) @Mat. Volchenkov's last contract was a hometown discount.
C) Remember the finals a few years ago. We got pushed around like mad. With guys like sutton, carkner and volchenkov, (heck- even phillips) we won't be pushed around. Add neil, ruutu, and winchester to the mix; BRING ON THE PLAYOFFS!!!!!!!!!!
WACK, another deadline bust, 3 years in a row now, and now we have 1 pick left to draft a forward...Thumbs down.
Bad trade!!! I thought we were going to improve our power play, not make it worse! Now we don't have a second round pick at all this year. And do we even have a 3rd? Hope it works out, but in my mind that is a lot to give up for an inconsistent stay at home defenseman. Sure this makes us bigger, but there is very little skill on the back end now. And if karlsson gets injured again, we have no talent back there. Hope something else is in the works!
If A Train walks (which I'm assuming he will...why trade him when we're obviously gearing up for a run with these trades), do we have to win the cup or re-sign Cullen or Sutton to make this a successful season?
I don't know, I assume we do? I'm not excited or down on these deals yet...but I'm wary.
chirp, do you know if Sutton is going 2 be in the lineup 2nite?
Folks.
Shoving Cheechoo into the minors means Murray can afford Scott Niedermayer's $6,590,978 cap hit.
Just sayin' that Volchy, Jesse and a pick might be the price for that.
I'm for this move. Yes the 2nd is a bit much but you have to pay what the market is asking if you want to play ball.
Sutton is one mean beast, was hoping it would be him we acquired...we just got more difficult to play against (or at least the opponent will get hurt more).
is he in the lineup tonight?
Most would say it's obvious BM isn't done, but based on his past and past deadlines where we have said the same I'd say were just $h*t outa luck he's done and this is whathe supposedly thinks us good enough
Senschirp, do you know if sutton will be playing tonight?
I saw this in the comments section in the TSN article. It made me feel a little better about this trade:
"Have watched every game Sutt's has played since landing ont he Island. Enjoy him up in Sens'land. He's big, pretty mobile for a hulking D'man.. Has a mean streak, plays hard each shift, and doesn't take stupid penalties. He's not a huge point getter so don't think he will become one yet can contribute. You get a solid shut down Defencemen who can play anywhere in your top 4 pairings when needed. Good luck Sutt's we'll definitely miss you until we find out what comes back in return and what that number 2 pick turns into!!"
According to senators.nhl.com Sutton has "averaged 20:48 in time-on-ice per game this season and leads New York in both hits (155) and blocked shots (153). The 153 blocked shots are second most in the NHL." Thats pretty good. Volchenkov has 123 hits. Seem like similar players to me.
I don't think Murray is done but you never know Murray may just stand pat.
I think Murray needs to get a second rounder tomrrow before the deadline.
I think that Murray needs to add some size to the forward group I would like to see Murray add someone who is like 6'4 and I like how Murray added more size to the team by aquiring Andy Sutton.
I just think Murray needs to get Eric Fehr.
Senschirp, With Zidlicky resigning for 12 million for three years with the Wild, does this effect A-Train situation? Thank you
Currently Sutton is 22nd in the league with 155 hits and 2nd in the league with 153 block shots.
A-Train this year is 5th on block shots with 137 and 57th on hits with 124.
I like the direction that Murray is taking with this deal.
I'm wondering if Bryan can swing for Carlo Colaiacovo?
@kyle:
3.2 million for Anton is not a hometown discount. It's what the guy is worth - and a very generous amount for that matter. It's Murray saying: You're an important part of this team and you will be paid accordingly.
This is all the fault of dumbass GM's that overpay for unworthy players (i.e. Burke for Komisarek). How can Volchenkov's agent NOT bring it up in contract negotiations. Clearly, Volch is a top level defensive player, he can fetch the money he wants.
This means Volch is gone in my book. I'm intrigued but at the same time this is a lot of tinkering with a team that was already doing well.
And somehow, this seems like the same scenario we had last year with Commodore...
I hope he isn't done. Remember when we could barely win last year and the late stages of the year before. It was because we had no good puck moving d-men. Murray thinks he got another chara, but he got another jason smith! Hopefully either volch or kelly are heading out for a skilled defenseman!
stats wise, he is better then ANTON in blocked shots and hits...replacement? i would love to have both
$10 says that Sutton won't be wearing #25 when he suits up for us... :)
I missed it so much - GO SENS GO!!!
Volchenkov signed for 2.5 mill (average) as a cap hit. That was a discount. I'd give him like 3.75- 3.9 mil. 4 at absolute most (might be pushing it). Hope he resigns, we need him.
So Chirp, is this it for the Sens? Or is there one or a few other moves that will be done by 3pm tomorrow?
We all saw what happens if Karlsson is knocked out, he needs help for the playoffs he can't be the only one able to create offense/chances from the back end and no Kuba or Campoli are not the answer neither is Lee.
The Sutton move I believe is a bluff on Murray's part if Volchenkov doesn't comply he's probably gone by tomorrow.
Or I could be wrong and he just did that to add depth altho again the "depth" we need is an offensive defenseman
Yeah guys Sutton replaces A-Train and his 7+ years of experience and chemistry of playing with Phillips. Give your heads a shake. This guy is a depth add. He's the 6th or 7th D-Man on this team. He doesn't replace what A-Train brings not even close. Sutton has almost no playoff experience by the way whereas Phillips and A-Train have years of experience as a pair.
Murray is in a damned if he does, damned if he doesn't situation. If he deals A-Train it will destroy our defensive chemistry. It would significantly weaken any chance we have of making a good playoff run. Something we almost need to do this year with the piss poor bandwagon fans in Ottawa. If he holds on to A-Train and doesn't get him signed before July 1 we let a significant asset walk for nothing. Overpaying him is almost as bad as letting him walk for nothing. No matter what we've in a tough situation here. The only thing we can hope for is that A-Train will be reasonable and sign a long enough contract to keep his cap hit low.
King Karlsson - say Hello to your new bodyguard.
Hey no skill on the back end - KUBA-KArlsson and cAMPOLI
ALL SKILL GUYS - WAKE UP PEOPLE - GREAT MOVE
Good move BM!
Andy Sutton is not going to be in the line up from Team1200
From www.ottawasenators.com:
"The native of Kingston, Ont., has averaged 20:48 in time-on-ice per game this season and leads New York in both hits (155) and blocked shots (153). The 153 blocked shots are second most in the NHL."
What's important here is blocked shots....not to mention comparable ice time/hits to you-know-who.
Go Sens
Also one thing about A-Train people need to realize. He's missed 15 or so games in each of the last three seasons. Going forward if his health gets worse he's never going to get another opportunity at a big contract. He's 27 and at the prime age for a long and expensive extension. Whatever extension he gets this time around it is likely to be the most lucrative of his career. His only chance at a big money contract. His agent is very likely telling him he has to go for the big money now because he's not going to get another chance at it, unfortunately.
I think I know who going to be paired with Carkner.
Sutton/Carkner
The Sutton and Carkner pairing is going to be a scary pairing.
There were quite a few teams lined up for this guy. So he can't be that bad.
2nd round pick was the going rate this trade deadline.
Seidenberg -- Carolina was probably asking a lot more than a 2nd round pick and Murray would not pay more than that.
This is suppose to be a relatively weak draft year after the 1st round.
Our 2nd pick that went to Carolina will be at least 45+ -- SJ pick will be around 55+ pick.. so not the highest end of the picks..
I'm okay with this deal. BM has been in the league a long time -- so I trust what he does.
Not every trade at the deadline works for every team.. it's a crap shoot -- but you have to try to do what you can.
go get Wolski!
I've been reading a lot of these comments and i have to say this is a good move. Given the placement of the second round pick in the draft you could argue its a steal. The pick wouldn't have come until the 56-60th position, as others have mentioned. Sutton makes our defence much meaner and gives a physical defenceman on all 3 lines. i think the pairings will be phillips-volchie, karlsson-sutton, kuba-carkner. Sutton will be a rental because of Cowen coming up.
My prediction of Murray's next actions are trade brian lee for a second rounder, and Volchie will be resigned for 4 years at around 3.5 mil/year. Maybe 4 mil given the recent signing of Zidlicky.
It would be sad to see A-Train go but we have to realize that his body is breaking down. He is not worth $4M + for a 50 to 60 games per season. He is not getting younger and will get hurt more often in the near future.
How about we trade him with Brian Lee to L.A. for Jack Johnson.
Go Sens Go
Waaaa waaaaa waaaaa!
Murray is a fool
Murray is a joke
Blah, blah, blah.....
I'm glad none of you are the GM of the Sens. There would never be any trades.
Sutton will be immediately better than any 2nd rounder.
Volchenkov is a great shot blocker and hitter, but he also is slow, can't hit the net and is not the greatest passer.
I like him, but not at any price. Anything over 3.5M is overpaying.
Some of you are forgetting how freaking awesome Karlsson was playing before he went down with the injury.
We don't need a puck moving defenseman.
I guess I am ok with Sutton because our D needs size, toughness and attitude, all of which he has.
I don't expect anything else from him, so he is unlikely to disappoint.
Karlsson only had 6-10 decent games. He was lost most of the start of the season and will look lost again come playoff time.
This is an overpayment for Sutton. I'm not sure how we are going to keep up with all the speedy forwards out there when our blueline has very little mobility. I guess Sutton and Carkner taking penalties will excercise our penalty kill...we'll see I guess.
I don't hate the trade and I don't love it. a Stanley Cup finals and two games won there will justify Murray's decisions, a first or second round flop will show he is sadly out of touch...
great ... we're going to go through another draft without a second round pick even though we started the year with 2!!!!!!! And for wat? A pylon that can hurt people. Fuk I thought Murray would finally do something big. Dont get me wrong, cullen was a solid pick up but sutton for a second was awful.
I just saw a mini press conference with Bryan Murray where he said "we did one trade today and if we can make another trade we would be happy" now does anyone know if this was a previously recorded conference or was it today?
He also stated he doesn't intend to trade Volchenkov, guess we shall see...
I think the Sens are not done and there may be a few other trades that go down
apparently islander fans think we fleeced them.....sounds good to me
Here’s a trade BM need to make with the Panthers:
To Florida:
2nd round pick (from SJ)
Brian Lee
Mike Brodeur
Shannon or Kelly
To Ottawa:
Dennis Seidenberg
Tomas Vokoun
Nathan Horton
I have never liked Sutton as a fan of the game big mean dirty bastard that lays ppl out and can be pretty cheap but turns down anyone who challenges him to a fight always turns them down like a p*ssy
but nonetheless this is the type of guy we needed to add to the bottom pair having 3 of your d soft as a brand new pillow is not a good thing in the playoffs.
A 2nd is a steep price and would accept it more if it was 2011 pick but it's not, other teams were maken offers on this guy it is not like BM just said here take a 2nd that was the price any team was going to pay for him.
Off topic, but according to TSN, Emery out for the rest of the season due to hip surgery.
We want Wolski!
To Colorado
Chris Kelly
Brian Lee
To Ottawa
Wojtek Wolski
That would be freakin'awesome!
I agree that Karlsson looked lost to start the season. I didn't agree with him being called up either, but he was playing awesome, and was directly responsible for two game winning assists.
The kid is a gamebreaker. There aren't many D in the league that could make those passes he made to Fisher for the OT goal against the Habs and the slap pass he made to Alfie for the winner against...whoever it was.
The team is so much different with him in the lineup.
I'm a big Karlsson fan now. He is going to be amazing.
Now that Emery's down...
Murray should really be pushing to trade Leclaire to the Flyers. I'm sure we could get a great return from them.
And I'm sure a ton of people will hate that suggestion.
Depends on your brand of hockey, but at 6'6" and 245 pounds ... works for me. This team just got a lot tougher and he's not expensive, all things considered equal. It's also the last pick in the 2nd round (SJ's pick). He's at the top of the league in blocked shots. If you like Volchenkov's style of hockey, you'll like Sutton. Also, you can match him (big and strong) with finesse (which me have a lot of - Campoli for example).
Kelly will be on the move to relieve the cap situation and free up a spot up the middle, we have too many centres!
I'm startin to think a hamhuis volchenkov trade is in the mix???? It really makes sense to me. Hopefully we can give them cheechoo and grab a guy like j.p. dumont but i guess all we can do is wait and see.
I like the trade, think it is a prelude to trading Volchie, and am not sure if we should do that. I guess Volch would get more than a second (?don't know what?), and Sutton would probably be a very-near Volchie once paired with Philips. And obviously if Volch were traded it would involve the return of a more offensive D. But damn - Vochie, Sutton, Carkner, Philips. Eastern Conference: you are shut-down!
Tim
{{{ Habib said...
So what you're saying is we could have had Leopold for essentially the same thing as Sutton?Sutton reminds me of Hal "Skill"... I mean Gill.
Tall, slow and useless}}}
Hal Gill has a Stanley cup... so as much as you think he's useless, he obviously served a purpose for the Penguins.
Dylan
This is simply a move for the playoffs. It not only gives us another solid Dman (6'6 245 lbs has to count for something..) but gives us someone to replace should he be traded or leave in the offseason.
I think its a really smart move by Murray. It pushes Volch to not only see that we are going for a strong run, but that he can be replaced.
And for all of you who think we overpayed... come on, how many of you have actually seen Sutton play? Stick your heads out of your asses and wait and see. A second round pick is obviously the going rate. And with Grebeshkov, Zidlicky, Hamhuis, Leopold being unavailable, Murray had to act and he did.
Seriously though, a 2nd round pick for a strong veteran who has better stats this season then our 'best' defenseman is NOT an overpayment.
Can't wait to see how the defense looks on thursday.
I don't know if I like this either...
But he was 3rd on Isles for Icetime., first on Isles for hits and 1st on Isles for shot blocking. He got a lot of PK time.
Hes obviously not a offensive guy, but for what he's worth, he sounds like another Volchenkov, except not as smooth.
I hope he isn't clumsy... the guys huge! 6'6'' and 245 pds. The last biggest guy we've had on the back end was Zdeno Chara.
I like this depth move and the more I think about it, the more a 2nd pick was worth for Sutton.
He doesn't bring much experience, but I guess that's what Cullen is for.
Good job GM BM!
Cup run for sure this year.
Roloson to Flyers - book it.
Whenever fans of the other team (NYI) are more upset than we are about a trade - it's a good sign. Let this sink in, let Murray make another deal (or non-deal) and then decide how you like our team going into the playoffs. Then wait for training camp before you worry about "next year's team" since it will undoubtedly look different after the summer.
Just heard that Vokoun has agreed to waive his NTC. Let's hope Murray is attempting something BIG to get him!!!
To Ott
Vokoun
Horton
Seidenberg
To Fla
Leclaire
Foligno
Volchenkov
Lee
Vokoun is a beast and would be by far th best goaltender this team has ever seen!
Hey chirp I am a contracto that was working on volchy's basement
I was on my way there and I got a cal that he no longer wants to finish the basement
And now I have heard his house is gonna be put up for sale
If Murray is done barring the volch miracle deal or just listenin to anyone who might call him I don't really feel that much better overall I like Cullens versatility and yes he can chip in points but I don't feel he really gives us the offensive boost we could use.
Id give a left nut to get a guy of wolskis caliber on this team
Lee

@Phil:
Nevermind the fact that your trade proposal is completely one-sided and ridiculous, we don't have ANY 2nd round draft picks anymore! SJ's 2nd was used to get Sutton and our own was used for Cullen.
You need to keep up with the news Jimbo!
I think this is a good move.
1) It fills out our D corps again without messing with the chemistry.
2) It gives us a big mean hitter for the playoffs. (Check out his hits, on youtube. He is mean and dirty. Just what you want in the playoffs. Pronger vs McAmmond anyone?)
3) Not a great fighter but certainly willing to drop the gloves. (Which gives Carkner and Neil someone to talk trade with and maybe some pointers.)
4) I see him as a perfect depth D-man for use on the PK when our lighter and more offensive D-men don't have the weight to move bodies out from in front of the net. Think Carkner & Sutton on a PK - would you stand in front of the net?
5) It's a LATE 2nd round pick (SJ) which is well within value.
Don't equate this to a early 2nd round pick, it's a freakin' 3rd rounder for all intents and purposes.
6) A 2nd round is what the market is demanding. Prices fluctuate based on supply and demand. There is demand and very little supply.
7) It gives Murray more flexibility to trade ATrain if he has to.
8) It puts pressure on ATrain to sign (which I hope he does... for 3.25m)
Phil..come on man you can't be serious. Btw that pick has already been traded!
he's been a decent defenceman in the league the last few years playing with atlanta and the islanders. aka bottom feeders. expect him to raise his game and want to contribute even more now that he is finally part of a contender
Volchenkov
Leclaire
1st
for
Turco
Robidas
3rd
I do like mega trade suggestions, although whoever said we have a 2nd pick left to offer upthread should be advised that we in fact don't.
How about we do a big trade with Chicago? All of our players for all of their players. According to my quick back of a napkin calculations both teams would stay under the cap and also there would be no issue with chemistry obviously. Plus it would generate a lot of money in new jersey sales for both teams.
Think about it.
(Trade dealines are exhausting, aren't they?)
I hate this move. This team needs *more* skill and speed on the blue-line, not less of it (I assume Campoli will get the seat, unless EK gets benched in which case I am ****ing done with this team).
Our defence absolutely sucked the life out of our forwards last season and it seems like we're heading in that direction again. I get that Gill won a Cup with Pittsburgh and that a Sutton kind of player fills a role, but we've already got Phillips, Volchenkov, Carkner, and to a lesser extent Kuba who are primarily guys whose strengths are in the defensive zone.
Now we've got four guys who don't move the puck, one pseudo-puck mover in Kuba and one legitimate offensive defenceman who happens to be 19. You need toughness on your blue-line, yes, but that needs to be balanced with puck-movement for your forwards to be able to do anything, and I thought we were too much in the "toughness" direction already. Now we're either adding an element we don't need at the expense of perhaps the most integral element in the new NHL, or we gave up a second round pick for a press-box filler.
I'm disappointed. Hopefully Sutton can prove me wrong, though.
I'm Volchenkov's dental hygienist. He's just cancelled an appointment he had with us next week.
Hahah I don't like where this is headed...
Giovanni.....
That sure is interesting. Could mean something....or could mean nothing at all.
We shall see!
LOL @ Giovanni
I'm Volchenkov's mistress and he just called to tell me he needs "some" tonight... wonder what that means?
Volchenkov lies starting. We'll talk about his trade IF it happens tomorrow. Until then, come yourselves
weve got to have one of the biggest d corps on the league now i think...i heard on tv a while back that they were one of the biggest blue lines, now with picard out and sutton in we are huge
@ Tony 3:55pm,
I just saw Murray talking on CTV (CJOH) news, and he said that he may have another deal in the works for tomorrow, depending on what becomes available/what offers he gets.
Should be interesting! We can't rule anything out until 3pm tomorrow goes by!
But, if nothing else does happen, I think we have a good enough team now to try and push for a deep run.
still like to see anotehr legit offensive player yah we have depth bla bla but our scoring currently i think it sits mid pack and lets be serious ya Cullen is going to get PP time but on an elite team this guy is not playing the point on the pp.
I didn't know this, but CBC ranks Sutton #1 defensive defenseman in the league. #2 - Anton Volcenkov!!! (#50 - Matt Carkner). I love this D - keep it! It was not lack of puck-movers that stifled the team last year, it was the system. Keep this d! Anything that enterz our zone gets squashed. Then the forwards can do the offense.

SOOOO - Sutton will be be playing on Saturday against the Leafaroos.
EXCELLENT !
any one know where you can watch the game online
I wonder if we could get Zbynek Michalek and Peter Mueller from Pheonix if Volchenkov isnt going to re-sign. Pheonix is apparently shopping Mueller and we could use a young up and comer with potential. Alfie, Cullen and Kovalev arent going to be around forever. And guys like Foligno, Shannon, Regin and Winchester don't seem like top tier guys (2nd liners at best). Mueller is RFA could sign him for possibly just over 2mil and Michalek is a UFA we could get rid of him if he isnt doing what we need,
Possibly:
Volchenkov + Kelly
For
Mueller + Zybnek
"Hal Gill has a Stanley cup... so as much as you think he's useless, he obviously served a purpose for the Penguins.
Dylan"
Someone hat to get Crosby and Malkin's post-game snacks and drinks I suppose.
Just to keep the chain going, I'm Volchenkov's grocer and he didn't pick up any tomatoes today...
In all seriousness, I'm concerned about how plodding our D corps looks. Worried about how we'll handle the quick forwards out there, we'll see though.
Eklund hasn't said anything about Volchenkov, good as a lifetime Sen!
I would like to see a trade with the Chicago Blackhawks.
I think it would be smart for Murray to trade one of the centermen that the Senators have I would think one of Kelly or Winchester could be traded maybe packaged going to the Chicago Blackhawks.
I would like to see a deal like this.
TO:Chicago Blackhawks
Chris Kelly or
Jesse Winchester
Brian Lee
TO:Ottawa Senators
Andrew Ladd
2nd round draft pick
If Sutton plays well, I'd like to see us resign him.
Phillips-Volchenkov/UFA
Kuba-Karlsson
Sutton-Cowen (the hitting pairing)
I'd hate to play against the third pairing!
This is why Murray traded for Sutton. Carkner and Lee are proving how useless they are. Also I hope people will stop taking Kuba and Campoli for granted from now.
Guys please! Murray will not trade Volchenkov going into the playoffs. You don't deal away a core player heading into the post-season. You make a run, then sort it out when everything's said and done.
ps: You won't like the return for Volchy anyway. He's not as highly rated as Sens fans like to think.
Yep one of the biggest d corps in the league. Also the slowest, worst at making the break-out pass, and worst in the offensive zone. You really have to wonder what's going through their minds when you see them trading our future for a very mediocre present. Talk about lack of vision.
pg
BM's trade horrific deadline record remains in tact.
Hard to believe the isles managed to squeek one out without Sutton in the line-up.
deadline day is gonna suckkkkk for Sens fans now, I was hoping for a top 4, not a bottom 2...Look like last year's defense now, why does Murray think this defense is useful in the new NHL....sighhhhh
Barring a miracle deal no one expected ... im very underwhelmed compared to what tI felt b4 the trade freeze if we get bounced in the first round or even 2nd what a waste of those 2 picks as the scouting staff has proved to be very good picking guys in that range
Please add another guy that can score.
I'd hate to see the price to get a legit top D man if depth guys are goin for #$#$in 2nds
