Sens Stick With It

Looked like one of those nights where a goalie was going to steal one. The Senators had all sorts of chances over the first 40 minutes but just couldn't find a way to beat Deslauriers. The Oilers rookie deserves full credit for his performance tongiht.

The Sens stuck with it though and were finally rewarded with a power play goal mid way through the third period. Matt Cullen one timed a pass from Erik Karlsson and finally found a way through the red hot goaltender.

Fisher scored shortly after and the Senators were in complete control from then on out.

Good to see the Senators get a couple power play goals in the third period. Should give them a little more confidence with the man advantage and maybe get that part of their game going a little bit.

The Senators should have dominated this game against the lowly Oilers and they did. If not for the heroics of Deslauriers this game could have been real ugly.

On a side note, I really like the looks of the Karlsson/Sutton pairing out there. Sutton provides a strong stay at home game and it seems to be allowing Karlsson a little more freedom on the offensive side of things.

Andy Sutton has looked very solid since his arrival in Ottawa. I knew what he brought defensively but I've been really impressed with his offensive awareness. He's never going to be a big point getter but he seems to make the right play most of the time at both ends of the rink.

Hope to see more of that pairing on this West Coast trip.

Agreed Chirpy, Sutton has been a rock back there. I really like this player a lot. If he carries on like this to the end of the year, then I hope Murray can find a way to lock him up for a couple more years.

That score is really flattering for the Oilers. Easily could have been 6-1 or 7-1 had Deslauriers not been as good as he was.

Kovy still looks a bit out of sorts, but he showed flashes tonight. A couple more games and I'll bet he's back to the pace he was on prior to the Olympics.

Fantastic game by the SENS.. really liked seeing Sutton in front of the Oilers net casuing problems, reminded me of Chara back in the day. We needed this game big time, and we didnt disappoint.. Karlsson looks better every game and I think we Sens fans couldnt be happier with his play. Lets hope we continue this play in calgary on Thurs.

On a side note, what a nice open ice hit by Michalek.. too bad Spezza was on the other end of it, HA!

Since he has been hated on so much lately, nice to see him get an important goal like that! elliot was solid as usual, and finaly scoring powerplay goals man I thought edmonton actually was able to kill penalties! But ryan whitney, what a terrible game cross checking central right there!. Anyways GO SENS GO!

Sutton and Cullen are fitting in quite nicely.

I really liked the line combinations tonight. Should be very interesting to see what they look like when Foligno is recovered....perhaps:

Michalek Spezza Alfredsson
Foligno Fisher Kovalev
Regin Cullen Shannon
Ruutu Kelly Neil

Wow, now those are some deep lines! I also wouldn't mind Foligno playing with Spezza at some point, just to see what the pairing could do.

Great win tonight, I'm hoping for a perfect Western Roadtrip!

Well played guys, way to come back after a couple of unpalatable losses. Elliott's been playing great for the second half of the season, but I have to admit I was a little disappointed Leclaire didn't get a second game after the reasonably strong performance against the Leafs. But then I'm not an NHL coach. Maybe Clouston is trying to light a fire under Pascal?

There's no doubt in my mind that #65 is our #1 D-man at this point in the season...he made some spectacular offensive AND defensive plays tonight all while leading the Sens in ice time. What a fantastic future he has!

Karlsson is a Superstar. Only 19 and he controls the game like he does - SCARY! The trade up of 2 spots to get this guy was magical.

When Foligno-Kuba-and Campoli draw back into the lineup(Sorry Cark)- this team will be really dangerous!

I agree chirp, I thought Deslauriers was really good and had a feeling that it would take a scrappy goal to get things rolling for us. Good to see the Sens dominate and not give up. I know many people may disagree but I think even though the Sabres have 3games in hand...I think that there is still the possibility to finish atop the division considering we have 2 more games left against them...What do you think Chirp? I think this road trip will also dictate alot but it has started on a good note....

great game. Sens are taking the cup. Karlsson will be up for norris next year - and win.

Anonymous said...

We had control of this game right from the start, shots were 12-1 at one point in the first period. Edmonton could have gotten more momentum if not for Elliot's save on the penalty shot.

I am really impressed with the play of both Sutton, and Cullen, and we have got to give Bryan Murray credit. Cullen is a great all-around player that can score some goals as well. He can play Powerplay and Penalty kill, and he seems to be one of those guys that fits in on any line he is put on. I liked the play of the Kelly-Cullen-Neil line the whole night. Meanwhile, Sutton pushes people around like it's no problem, and he's a very good shut down defenceman. He doesn't panic with the puck, and he looks great out there with the always improving Erik Karlsson.

I think we can all agree now that giving up a 2nd round pick for each of these players isn't an issue.

Great win by the sens...hopefully this heats up the team for the final 17 or so games!!

We need Bryan Murray to re-sign Sutton - he's a comparable player to Volchy but will be much cheaper!! Make it Happen Murray!!

I was hoping somehow that Andy Sutton would be retained in the offseason, but with Kuba, Phillips, Karlsson, Carkner and now Lee under contract, Volchenkov very likely to return, we're at 6 d-men already, and add Campoli as an RFA, and Cowen as a guy who could walk onto the team next year.

Personally, I'd love to see this:

Phillips-Volchenkov
Sutton-Karlsson
Kuba-Carkner
Lee

But, with Lee's 2 year/1 way deal that seems unlikely.

Lee can develop a lot of things with full time play, except for a 6'6" frame ;)

I would love to see Sutton and Volchenkov re-sign with this team, but we have many defenceman, some with big contracts.

I would like to see Kuba and Lee gone after this season. (Kuba has been good, but bigger and better things are to come)

I hope that the defensive corps looks like this next season:

Sutton- Karlsson
Phillips- Volchenkov
Cowen- Carkner/ Campoli

Anonymous said...

I hope that Cullen is resigned and Kelly is moved. Cullen bring more to the table and by moving kelly we can still get an asset back. Sutton needs to stay as well. His big presence has been needed since Big Z walked out the door. He gives you a very scary and solid bottom 6 with him and Carkner.

Anonymous said...

Volchenkov is far from "very likely" to return. Questionable is more like it. Maybe BM can give Sutton a 1 or 2 year deal to keep him around until Cowen is ready and let volchenkov walk.

Great game tonight on all fronts. I don't get why Brian Lee doesn't get more respect on the blogs and from the sens, he's looking like a solid everyday defenseman.

Everyone needs to stop thinking about what we need to do with Chanks or Sutton or anything to do with our Defense.

BM is along the lines of a Genuis and he is in the drivers seat here. Much unlike last year with the Heatley shit. BM has a plan and is ready for anything this summer. No matter what happens in the off season. It will make us better.

I don't think Murray is the kind of guy that just brings in rentals. I think he brings the UFA's that he intends to resign if he can. He wanted to resign Stillman but he was asking too much. I don't remember if he changed his mind about Commodore by the end or if he tried to resign him too. We will see an attempt by Murray to keep these two gents.

look at that list and tell me what you think....i think its all the right ingredients right there , all thats left is finding the right combos......MURRAY MAKE IT HAPPEN

The Dutch Treat said...

I stopped criticizing Murray, the minute he acquired Andy Sutton. Murray identified the weaknesses on his team and made the moves to fix them. Cullen and Sutton were amazing pick-ups and I hope the team can re-sign them both!

Next, gotta give some love to Brian Lee. He played a very solid game out there and that penalty shot call on him was terrible, it was a great play by him and a dive by Comrie.

Next, I really like the way the defence is right now. I don't miss Kuba in the least and I really believe Murray is going to ship this guy out the minute his NTC expires so that he can keep Volchenkov and Sutton. Campoli is as good as gone too. Sadly, acquiring him was a mistake. Let Lee and Karlsson develop on the big boys squad. The kids are alright!

Just say no to Kuba.

It will be interesting to see what happens when Campoli is healthy. I'd much prefer him in the lineup instead of Carkner come the playoffs.

Kuba's NTC expires this off-season IIRC. I expect to see him and Lee shipped out and maybe they hold on to Campoli or make way for Cowan and resign Sutton.

Anonymous said...

I still see Lee being traded eventually, as well as Campoli being shipped off as well (how many times has he been benched).

I'd take Sutton over both of them..

I wonder what Volchie will decide.

Any news SC on the SENS interest in resigning Sutton when it looks like ATrain might be a goner? A 2 year deal for Andy makes sense and he could mentor Cowen and Weircoich when they enter the league next year.

Karlsson is very exciting. Remember at that draft when Murray was talking with Burke to try to get the Leafs pick, so he could draft Khadri? If you have to think that was all a charade to make Burke take Khadri. Karlsson is looking like the steal of that draft and to be honest Khadri may not pan out. I know it is early and he is young, but I am not sure he is the player he is projected to be.

Obvioulsy Doughty is the the best D from that draft and Tyler Myers may be as well, but 15 years from now we could be looking at another Lidstrom. Steady and awesome!!!

Anonymous said...

nice w...and i dont think losing suttton in the offseason is a foregone conclusion.

I think BM will ship out lee at the draft for a seceond and a prospect unless he comes on strong down the stretch.

YOu can't have too many dmen heading into the playoffs, there is always somebody playing hurt and different guys bring different elements to their game depending on who were facing.

good luck in calgary boyz, if we can score more than 2 goals we should win it.

Anonymous said...

Karlsson looks like a Alfie but plays D.

I am sooo happy we drafted this guy.

Anonymous said...

Zopust,

I like those D lines, but really wouldn't it be great if BM would trade Kuba? His no-trade expires this summer. That would allow for the retaining of both Sutton and Volch without sacrificing forwards. By next year I feel like Lee will be at least as effective as Kuba, but much cheaper and younger. He also is showing signs of being much more physical than Kuba (not that that is very hard). Maybe Cowan could be the 6th, or Camps, or both. This would be nearly 3m cheaper than the D you listed. And it gives us 3 vets and 3 young players plus a young, developing, 7th, instead of a declining Kuba.

Phillips-Volchenkov
Sutton-Karlsson
Lee-Carkner

Cowan/Camps

I have a feeling that with the signing of his new contract, Brian Lee will surprise some in the coming weeks. I really liked his game last night. His play on Comrie was PERFECT even if the ref gave a penalty shot. Perfect positioning and perfect stick control but Comrie lost his foot by himself and fell.

He his not and will never be close to Karlsson because King-Karl is the exception, but I think he can be a solid 3-4 D for us in the coming years.

Remember, he is only 22 and MOST of the D's takes longer to develop.

Agree SC. Also, I hope we keep Sutton beyond this year. He has the necessary truculence from my perspective ... a cheaper A-train.
Phillips + Cowen (shut down), Sutton + Karlsson (strength and finesse), Kuba + Campoli (on the cheap), and Wiercoch + Lee. Use A-Train money for a goalie or offence. I'd actually like us to trade A-Train's rights before the draft (ala Bowmeester).

Great effort against a team they HAD to beat. Elliot really saved the game on the penalty shot and allowed them to keep doing what they were doing.

My feeling is Kuba will be traded and Volchenkov signed. Hopefully they can sign Sutton for a year or two at a reasonable 2million/year.

The penalty shot call was brutal. Lee played that about as perfectly as a defenseman could and lifted his stick at the perfect time.

Kuba is gone this offseason regardless of the Volchenkov situation IMO. He has been a waste of resources and there will be better or at least comparable D-Men available this offseason for WAY less than he is making. How is this guy our top paid defensemen??

I think BM comes through and extends/re-signs Sutton to pair with Karlsson for the long-term because they have looked really stgrong so far. Then with Lee coming along, Carks signed through the next 2 years, and Campoli a RFA we can bring Cowen and Wierroch along at a pace that makes sense rather than rushing them into the league way ahead of schedule.

If we get rid of Kuba for a draft pick or a prospect, we can afford to pay Volchenkov $3.5mil and retain Sutton at around $2.75million and still have room left to pursue a top 6 forward if we want.

I think that the praise for Sutton is very premature.

Since Sutton has arrived, we have played the three statistically worst teams in the league (Canes, Leafs, Oilers).

I like some elements of what Sutton brings. His size and his physical play have been fun to watch. But, when we play the more skilled teams in the league, I'm a little concerned that Sutton will not fare as well.

Anon 10:44 ---
I think Sens picked Cowan this last draft -- Leafs took Kadri.
Karlsson was in the 2008 draft.
They may be able to keep Volchy if he agrees to lower salary at the end of the contract to bring down the cap hit. We are a better team with him than without him. If Murray can use the other D mentioned above as an example -- and Volchy is asking for 5M+ then Volchy is crazy. But look at his agent... same as the one for Kovalchuk.
I don't believe Cowan will be in NHL next year -- at least at the beginning -- he will start in Bingo.. which will be good for him. Same with Weircoch -- if he leaves university that is.. I think he still has 1 year left there?
I like the forward mix for the Sens right now. It would be nice if they could re-sign Cullen -- but it depends on how many bucks he wants. I would think you could re-sign Sutton and for less than 2.75M that someone mentioned.

Anon @ 1:22pm - I'm not at all worried about Sutton in the playoffs. In the playoffs, you NEED guys like him on your squad, or you'll get pushed around by bigger, stronger teams (a la 2007 finals).

He's faster than he looks. Let's not forget how big the guy is - he doesn't have to pump his legs nearly as fast as, say, Ryan Shannon to get up to speed. Also, his first pass is looking fairly good for a defensive Dman.

Anton and Phillips don't exactly light the world on fire with their foot speed either, but let's not forget that these guys routinely shut down the likes of OV, Crosby and Malkin. Sutton is simply a bigger version of these two guys, and again, I'm not at all worried about having him on the ice. Frankly, I bit my nails lot more often when Kuba steps on the ice against a high-flying team.

We'll be just fine come playoff time. And even if we get knocked out in the second round, it's no big deal. Let's all remember where this team was supposed to end up, according the the "experts" at the start of the year.

Hax said...

Okay I have to point something out to a few posters here.

Anyone who's saying "let A-train walk, we've got Sutton" needs to realize that Sutton (while a solid guy) is 34. Still has a few years left in him I hope (see Chelios, Chris) but so many posters have also been saying "don't sign A-train long-term cuz he'll break down soon". Volchenkov is 27.

To me, Volchenkov being 7 years younger makes him worth more than Sutton (though I'd love to have both).

Not saying that if Volchenkov does split that Sutton can't help ease the loss until Cowen is ready for that role, but let's not get too caught up thinking Sutton=Volchenkov.

Not bashing Sutton here at all - I like how he's played so far, just saying that having him doesn't suddenly mean that Volchenkov is no longer valuable.

THE BLACK TERROR said...

1:22, I get what you're saying, but there's no precedent to back it up. These last 3 games weren't Sutton first 3 in the NHL. He's been playing 20+ minutes a night on a pretty bad team to this point, and was only a -3 after 54 games. Pretty hard to argue that he's not a solid defenseman with that stat line.

I don't think the praise is premature at all. Sutton came advertised as a solid stay at home D who hits hard and blocks shots, and so far that's exactly what he's been. It's nice to be able to praise a guy for living up to expectations.

Also agree with the takes on Lee. Too soon to give up on him, he makes the kind of mistakes that 22 year old's make in the NHL. He doesn't look out of place in the NHL, and he's still improving. Give him time.

I also agree that if one d-man on this team might move in the off-season, it could likely be Kuba.

I think Murray brought Sutton here with the intention of retaining him for another 2 or 3 as long as he played well. We have a good GM here, that's for sure.

Allan said...

With all the talk about dmen needing more time to develop you would think some people would stop rushing Cowen into the team. He's only been drafted a year, has spent the past 18 months getting over possibly the worst surgery a sportsman can have.

Those believing that he'll walk striaght into the team next year might need to check their enthusiasm with their coat at the door.

The last draft dman that we picked that high still hasn't played 80 games for the Sens nearly 5 years after being drafted.

Sorry to Carkner ... I omitted his name in my earlier post. I think he has been a solid addition to the team and see him on the 4th line going forward. On a separate but related note, I'd love to see Neil drop the gloves now and again in support of Carks. They are both starters and I don't think it's fair that we look to Carkner to play defense and fight every baboon in the league (yes, Orr that's you). Cheers.

Anon 10:44 you're mixing up drafts, Karlsson was drafted in 2008 Kadri in 2009. But yes I agree, Burke is an idiot.

Lee played great last night. To be honest, he's looked good in most games he's played here, certainly better than Kuba and Campoli. I really don't understand why people want to trade him for peanuts when he hasn't even started to develop yet. Maybe he won't be as good as Staal but that doesn't mean we should just give him away. I like Lee, glad to hear they signed him to a pretty reasonable contract too. Cullen seems to finally be settling in and getting comfortable.

Volckenkov-campoli

each pairing has a puckmover and a reliable defensive defense men.. if we try that our i guarentee that it would work wonders instead of stacking a puck moving pairing or shut down pairing. then on the PK we play volche phillips and sutton kuba. amazing. going into the playoffs we will have lee and carkner as the 7/8 defensemen. thoughts??

Not sure if it was you or someone else that suggested Carkner move to the fourth line in the playoffs earlier. But I think that's crazy. You take a guy who's playing key minutes at D all season long and then say "Hey, go play forward"??

And who sits to make room? Neil who's one of the best forecheckers in the league? Ruutu one of the best agitators?

No, sorry. If we want some scoring on the back end then Lee plays and Carkner sits (or maybe even Lee and Campoli and Carkner and Sutton both sit). If we want more stay-at-home D then Carkner plays and Lee sits (or Kuba if Lee plays better).

It's nice to have depth/options eh?

LJ,

Kuba on the top pair and Volchenkov on the third pair? Yikes!

I agree that we need PMD and SDD (shut-down D) in our dressed six, but I don't think we need the extreme 50/50 split in the pairings you listed.

If you're playing a one-line team or a team with a Malkin/Ovechkin etc then you'll want Phillips/Volchenkov on the ice as much as you can against them.

If you're playing a more balanced team then you can maybe go with something similar to what you have, but I would argue that Phillips makes a decent first pass so no need to break him up from Volchenkov.

Sutton-Karlsson
Kuba/Lee-Carkner

That gives enough balance to the bottom 4. Though Karlsson did play with Phillips a bit this year and looked okay - I just think we'll need at least one "shut down pair" in the playoffs.
