Deadline Day

(UPDATE 3:39 PM)- Murray says that he did speak with a number of GM's today but didn't feel there was anything that made the team better. He's happy with the pick ups he made prior to the deadline and didn't need to do any more.

Murray also mentioned that he did receive a couple calls about Volchenkov over the course of the day. The good news is the two sides are talking about an extension and he sounds a lot more optimistic than he did the other day on the TEAM 1200.

(UPDATE 3:21 PM)- Dreger has confirmed the rumours from earlier about dsicussions with A-Train. He says that the Senators will continue to talk about a new deal for Volchenkov. Good news for Sens fans...

(UPDATE 3:06 PM)- Jay Grossman, the agent of Anton Volchenkov, has just tweeted that Volchenkov will stay with the Senators past the deadline. Interesting comment which shows that there really was a chance Volchenkov got moved today. Deadline is now passed

(UPDATE 2:52 PM)- The Capitals apparently kicked tires on Volchenkov but in the end decided to bring back Milan Jurcina. Rumour is they had an interest but the asking price was too high.

(UPDATE 2:24 PM)- Little over half hour to go till the deadline hits. Really sounded like things may come to head with Volchenkov before the 3:00 PM cut off but time is running out.

(UPDATE 1:32 PM)- There are rumours out there that an extension for Volchenkov is a possibility before the day is out. I would be surprised but we shall see...

(UPDATE 1:04 PM)- The injury to Filip Kuba is not serious but he is doubtful for tomorrow. Chris Phillips will play.

(UPDATE 12:57 PM)- There is a report on The Fourth Period suggesting that there has been some progress in talks with Volchenkov. Have not heard anything that confirms that but it's an interesting/promising rumour.

(UPDATE 12:18 PM)- Really not much to report right now. Contacts keep telling me not to let my guard down just yet but things are pretty slow right now.

(UPDATE 11:35 AM)- Division rival Boston Bruins have acquired Dennis Seidenberg.

(UPDATE 11:12 AM)- Kuba and Phillips not on the ice at practice. Matt Cullen is skating on the fourth line this morning.

(UPDATE 11:03 AM) According to Ian Mendes, new Sens acquisition Andy Sutton will wear #5 with the Ottawa Senators.

(UPDATE 10:57 AM)- Some rumours floating around right now about Brian Lee being a piece that could move today.

(UPDATE 10:47 AM)- I keep hearing rumours about Volchenkov but it's just so hard to believe Murray would actually consider moving him today. Would have to be an unbelievable offer.

(UPDATE 9:59 AM)- Word is the Vancouver Canucks would also love to add Volchenkov.
The Senators are on the ice this morning in Ottawa.

(UPDATE 9:15 AM)- Bryan Murray does not want to move Anton Volchenkov but he can count on a call from George McPhee in Washington today. They would love to add another shutdown defenceman and Volchenkov would certainly fill that void.

Everything we have heard from Murray over the last 24 hours seems to indicate he's done wheeling and dealing. Unless Murray gets an offer that blows him away, he's made his moves for this year.

In adding Matt Cullen he improved the offensive depth. By bringing in Andy Sutton he has improved the toughness on the back end and given this team one of the most physical blue lines in the league.

But the truth is, anything can happen on deadline day. This obviously won't be a crazy day on the Senators front but if Murray gets a good offer for a certain unrestricted free agent defenceman, he will absolutely consider it.

There are some other guys on this roster that could be had if the offer is right.

I'll try and be as loose with the updates as I can today but be sure to differentiate between rumours and facts! Stay tuned for updates throughout the day...

Do you agree that

Im Happy with the pick up of Andy Sutton but what about the scoring defenseman we've been looking for?

Any word if there has been any interest in a guy like Donovan? Maybe recoup a middle pick for him?

I like the pick up of Sutton.. Would love to see Kuba traded away, but we need defence right now.

I would love to see a forward get traded for a prospect.. I think a minor deal, like trading away Kelly for a 3rd/4th rounder and calling up Z. Smith woudl be a good idea. Smith plays just as well on the PK, and is younger and could give a good energy boost.. Other than something like that, I am very happy with the team.. (except for last night, carkner and A-Train.. WTF?!?)

It's going to be very exciting today to see all the deals that go on. I personally would like to see the Sens get a few good prospects... I don't think a blockbuster is in the cards for us today.

Now that we have added Sutton, are

Also with Cullen added recently to forwards, what will happen with our

What are your thoughts Chirp ??

Did Cullen even play last night?

Chirp, 3 games is more than enough for Cullen to have scored at least 6 goals and 6 assists, you're being too easy on him. And Sutton should have blocked 3 of the 4 goals last night while he was flying to Ottawa. And then scored the shootout winner. Quit being such a Murray lover.

take this for what it is worth but I was listening to XM radio NHL home ice this am. They had Denis Potvin on (who does color commentating with FLA) mentioned that he would be very surprised if Whitney did NOT end up in Ottawa. He mentioned that he and Murray have a very good relationship. Whitney has come out and said that if it wasn't for Bryan Murray, he wouldn't be in the NHL as he picked him up on waivers from Edmonton when he was the GM in FLA.
He was quite adamant about this....makes it very interesting...
As Potvin left the interview they mentioned that Potvin has been hot in his predictions as he predicted the Kovalchuk trade to nyj and the giguere trade...he didn't mention what would go the other way.

Anonymous said...

I'm up for getting Whitney but I don't want to give up the farm to get him...

To Ott:

Engin said...

what is vancouver offering?

StefCold said...

Like a couplee of people mentionned, Volchenkov is gone and in main part because of Philips. His hockey sense is sub-par, he often get lost in his defensive zone coverage and his one of our worse defensemen playing a 2-on-1. He surely mades up with is heart and grit, is mobility is very good and bails him out often.

However, if Murray get on offer for one of Washington good one D (Carlsson, Alzner, maybe Shultz) he better say yes. Sutton can play with Philips tomorrow and fill in the void for Volchenkov easily....

Anonymous said...

"Did Cullen even play last night?"

Yes, he did. He was in full Martin Lapointe mode, behind the play, not producing and on the verge of taking bad penalties.

He'll be backed up in wondrous fashion by the immobile Sutton...I guess this will push us to the top in terms of PK.

Not much to say about last night, Elliott isn't to blame on any of the goals, though I shudder to thing that Leclaire may start vs. Carolina. Wait and see I guess; I sure hope if Murray keeps Volchenkov that he re-signs him...that would be the second defenseman after Redden (let's be honest, we don't miss him) that he lets go to FA...

Anonymous said...

After watching Volchenkov last night Ive relized I lost my love for him. Sure hes a shot blocking machine, yes he'll lay a huge hit if he has someone in his tracks. But when the cards are down and he has the puck on his stick he is useless. He can't make a pass, everytime he tries to clear the zone the puck skips across the ice and whenever he takes a point shot it ends up on the stick of a forward. This guy is not worth the money he is going to be asking for. If we can get a replacement Dman and Forward in a trade, or even make a blockbuster trade including any of Lee, Kelly, Cheechoo or anyone else we should do it. Volchenkov is probably the best defencman on the market for today Murray just needs to make sure he exploits the over valuing of players on this day.

The Tif said...

I'd trade Volchenkov for Ovechkin. I mean, they're both Russian right? Hell, they can have Brian Lee too. I'll even throw in Cheechoo to sweeten the deal.

If Vancouver was willing to send Bieksa back to the Sens, even though he is hurt, I would do that deal in a heart beat.

Cubilas said...

Would you people stop bringing up Cheechoo as a bust trade and blaming Murray for sh*tting the bed!

Don't you think he knew EXACTLY what he was getting? A hard working hasbeen - yes.

His hands were tied; he got #9 and a pick and had to bring Cheechoo along to make it happen. A pill he had to swallow. I'm sure he expected more than 1/2 dozen goals, but he knew that Cheechoo wasn't going to be lighting it up every night.

Give him a break.

Secondly, stop coming up with nutso trades that'll never happen. Do you think Murray can lump every piece of deadwood we have together and trade for a superstar? Get real.

Sorry - I've read too much of the same nonsense for too long and I just had to say it. let's not fight.

Anonymous said...

Trade Volchie if we can get a 1st or serious blue chip prospect. He's expendable with all the other "stay-at-home defensemen" we have. I mean, a team actually has to have some "goes-to-the visitors house" defensemen as well.

Anonymous said...

The lack of mobility on the Sens was evident last night, especially when Kuba went down. Sutton will be taking Carkner's spot once Campoli returns. Carkner is great in regular season when you need fighters, but in the playoffs, he is too slow to play, and with Sutton, is somewhat redundant. The team will need a mobile d with Kuba, Karlson and Campoli to complement the shutdown players. Or, if Murray has any majic remaining, find a mobile d that is an upgrade to Campoli. But not likely the Sens dress Carkner when all are healthy with addition of Sutton.

Anonymous said...

I get the feeling that if anybody is going to overpay for Volchenkov, it will be Washinton. The only weakness on that team is reliable shut-down defense and they can afford to lose offence in acquiring it. Volch, Semin, and OV were hanging out all Olympics and you gotta think that Volch has told them that he'd love to play with the national hero. Wash management probably expects that they could re-sign him reasonably because of this. I think if they can trade for a good all-around D with some offensive upside, and a 2nd rounder, they should do it. Who do they have? The only problem: they might be supplying the last piece that makes a Stanley Cup Champion of the Caps.

Hopefully we can take advantage of the usual frenzy and unload some of our overpaid guys and old farts, and soon to be UFAs. Wait... we're adding those guys in exchange for picks. We're the only team in the league that has consistently gotten slower since the lockout.

Morris for 4th rounder makes you think Ottawa likely overpaid for Sutton, as Morris is more mobile, can play PP, is younger, and as a former 12th overall pick, has more skill.

We did overpay but that's the Murray way...anyone remember a 1st for Campoli? Yikes!

At least we have Matt Cullen for offensive depth...except he isn't producing anything outside his own paycheque...sigh, I miss the days when we had a half-decent team. :(

"Would you people stop bringing up Cheechoo as a bust trade and blaming Murray for sh*tting the bed!

Don't you think he knew EXACTLY what he was getting? A hard working hasbeen - yes.

His hands were tied"

They sure weren't. HE had the 50 goal scorer. HE set the price. HE could have had Ehroff and Michalek in another rumoured deal with San Jose. If we had to take Cheechoo then San Jose should have given us a high-end prospect as well or a 1st rounder.

It was a bad trade. Cheechoo is a bust, the 2nd rounder is gone and Michalek is wildly inconsistent and lacks the grit, playoff experience and never say die that you need come playoff time.

We essentially swapped a 50-goal guy for a 25 goal guy that has no idea how to get it done come playoff time. Don't remind me of this trade, I'm just hoping for a COnference or Cup finals to justify Murray's follies.

Derek Morris may have more skill than Sutton, but Morris can't play defense, he's a liability.

Speaking of defensivle liabilities, the only way Brian Lee could be softer is if his jersey was down filled. BM, please trade this guy, a large bag of pucks would be enough.

Truth said...

I know you are all going to come out and agree with Anon 10:46am, so I'll address it before you all start to cry foul - Boston would not have traded a solid d man for cheap like that to a division rival. They sent him west so they likely won't have to play against him, for cheap to create cap space. We could not have gotten him for that price, so don't bother.

And PG, again you decide to be bitter. Cullen and Sutton are not magic, but they are the type of guys that make for a dark horse playoff run. We don't need those picks at all, and as for being slower, you just aren't thinking:

In - Michalek, Shannon, Foligno, Winny, Karlsson, Campoli. All fast-to-decent

Out - Meszaros, Redden, Heatley, Smith, etc. The only fast player i can think of that we lost was Vermette, and Shannon and Michalek more than make up for him.

No. It's obviously not true. Use your brain for even two seconds and you'll figure out why. There is no way that Boston is going to give up Toronto's first round pick this year. A pretty much guaranteed lottery pick.

If that ever happened it would be like Christmas, our birthday, and New Years all rolled into one. Not happening.

Anonymous said...

This years draft class is horrible. No late second rounder is going to be ready for nhl action for 3-4 years. Its better to try with Cullen and Sutton then sit on our hands with draft picks. Don't even get me started on "well he shouldn't have given him an NTC" because these days in negotiations players can basically say give me the NTC or I'm not signing. 12:09PM. How about because they want to win, like the players in the room, and like living in the city? The reasons why a hometown discount should be given in the first place.

The point is everyone and their grandma can get an NTC/NMC these days it makes things very difficult to general managers in this league.

A perfect example is the Sundin situation with the Leafs. They should have been able to move him for picks/prospects/future. Instead they got screwed over. I hate the Leafs as much as anyone but this stuff happens all the time. If there is a lockout in the next CBA it's probably going to be over this issue. I can't imagine there is a single GM in the league that wants to see NTC/NMC's continue. Analysts say its the GM's fault for giving them but what choice do they have? They give them out or they lose the player.

Harry Pubes said...

Anon 12:31PM. I want Cheechoo back up too. If they can bring him up for the playoffs they will. I agree that he seemed to have chemistry with just about anyone you play him with. He's just a smart player with good hockey sense even if his speed has passed him by. Personally I hate the message it sent our locker room when we sent a heart and soul guy like that who comes to work every night to the minors. It just leaves a bad taste in your mouth. The team looked flat in the few games after he was sent down. Something tells me the guys didn't like it and it kind of irked the team a bit. Hopefully we'll be able to call him back up ASAP and have him for the ending stretch or playoffs.

Cullen wasn't that bad last night. He just is what he is. He had good numbers in Carolina because he played top six minutes with their skill players and played the point on the PP plain and simple. In Ottawa he's going to play a reduced 3rd/4th line role. He's got excellent speed, battle, and is good on the PK. That's it that's all. I don't know what your expectations were but if you make them more sane you might not hate him as much. He's probably top 5 in terms of pure speed on our team.

Also people don't forget Foligno coming back is going to give a huge bonus to our 3 line depth and our 4th line will be the best 4th in the league.

That's wishful thinking BeJamin. Put yourself in the player's shoes. There's no way that I'd sign for below market to stay for a team/city I like and give the GM the power to trade me to Siberia. If I didn't get the NTC, I wouldn't sign for below market value.

BeJamin said...

That's the point 12:54pm... GM's do not have a choice but to give NMC/NTC's. That's why they should be eliminated in the next CBA. It completely neuters GM's around the league.

I'm just saying that's what a hometown discount is. A player wanting to be there. Take a look at the Detroit Red Wings for examples. It's not wishful thinking.

I agree that the NTC/NMC is used as a bargaining chip to sign players for reduced price. The point is though when it comes to UFAs everyone and there grandma will be offered the NTC/NMC and big money. The clause needs to be dropped so that GM's aren't forced into giving it. If you left them in I'd prefer to see something like only players over 30 are allowed to have them & no player in the final year of his contract is allowed to have one.

Considering that Phillips WILL sign a home town discount and A-Train's skill has peaked, we have enough players with his skill set on D.
IMHO.

I think Cheechoo fits better with the team too. Nothing we can do about it right now though except hope that we can call Cheech up at the end of the season and have both. If that's the plan I'm on board with it.

Anonymous said...

BeJamin 12:38,

I agree that NTC are generally a PITA, but I think there should be a difference between the ones given to veteran players that have given their best years to a team and just want to ease into retiring without having to worry about bouncing aroung the league, and a douchebag like Heatley using it to control his future.

I'm no Sundin (and certainly no Leaf) fan, but if anyone got screwed I think it was Sundin. He earned the right to retire where he wanted after putting in so many years in such a life draining team/city.

Anonymous said...

Mike Brodeur take us all the way - people smoking pot in Ottawa I can see. Le Claire is the guy stop panicking people.

He's quick like a cat. He'll get it back don't worry.

Brodeur is a journeyman.

BeJamin said...

I don't know about that. I think if you were really loyal to a franchise you'd help them rebuild instead of riding the ship into the ground and then basically playing as a rental the next season to slap them in the face lol.

Anonymous said...

So you'd rather trade Alfie before letting him retire?

BREAKING NEWS: My sources have confirmed this trade:

To OTT:

Alexander Ovechkin

To WSH:

Volchenkov and Kelly

Alright, back to my bottle of vodka now.

extension pleeeeeeeeeease !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that would make the trade deadline day a success for us!!!! we would win! lol

(overly-excited!)

update from 4th period.
"Volchenkov may be inching closer to contract with Sens, definitely won't be traded"

Anonymous said...

A-Train, Kelly, Lee, for Kaberle? I could live with that!

tcharger said...

If it happens I would be ridiculously happy...I am still certain that if he isn't moved by today then he will be signed by the end of the day.

Anonymous said...

Chirp - u think Murray is posturing and will trade by 15:00

is he trying to drive up the cost - for sure GM's salivating at picking him up.

Anonymous said...

KUBA IS MADE OF GLASS. WE NEED TO GET RID OF HIM.

Mark said...

Matt, LOL

Well done! Is that with a paper bag or no paper bag?

Sens24 said...

BM needs to put in an offer for Kaberle...he needs to make it hard for Burke to say no.....this guy would put Ottawa over the top...

Sutton Phillips
Karlson Kuba
Kaberle Campoli (Carkner)

My god!!!!!

mike88 said...

sens24:

the amount you would pay for kaberle he would not be a 3rd line pairing with carkner lol

it would be:
kaberle-kuba (czech connection)
sutton-phillips (shutdown)
carkner-karlsson

karlsson plays #1 pp with kaberle

all that being said NO WAY does any trade with karberle and ottawa ever happen

Anonymous said...

murray just wants to see volchankov's bottom line and what he wants to see if the sens can afford him... if not we'll trade him.

Rizzo said...

Murray is making plays for rental players for the playoffs...why deal volchenkov too if that's the plan?

Someone explain this to me?

geoff said...

Its going to be a last minute announcement re Volchenkov ....either a deal is signed, or Murray takes one of the offers on table

Anonymous said...

If Kaberle were not a pie in the sky idea, it would be more like:

Kaberle - Phillips
Karlsson - Sutton/Kuba
Kuba/Sutton - Carkner

Anonymous said...

Looks like Murray did not get what he was looking for in any other trade(s).

Apparently Sens will offer Volchenkov an extension to his contract for now !

With less than 1 hour on the clock, I believe the Sens are over and done with in trading !

BeJamin said...

Anon 1:31PM. The answer to that question is it depends on the teams situation. If we are right there contending for the Stanley Cup then obviously we keep him. If we are middle of the pack/almost missing the playoffs we move him if he allows it.

1st + Good Forward Prospect or perhaps an even better deal for a 39-40 year old Alfie that is ready to retire after one last run at the cup is exactly what I would want to the team to do. If we can't give him that last shot at a cup he should have it somewhere else and help us rebuild ourselves for the days without Alfie at the same time.

Honestly though the way he's playing he might be around until he's 41. It might not even be up to his health, just a matter of when he decides he's done with the game and wants to move on.

The Caps seem to be the only serious team based on rumours.

Hadn't heard about anything being in place though.

Harry Pubes said...

Well on a side note.

I liked last nights game.

I stopped watching it near the end but there were two things I liked.

Leclaire gets back between the posts.

And Clouston went back to putting the kids with Kovey.

When Cullen came to town, Clouston had to start playing him top 6. But the only guys that click with kovey are shannon and Regin. They got back together at the end of the game and looked great.

Really want to see that line sit on the second line and Cullen, Fisher and Chester take care of the 3rd line. Then once Folingo comes back.. Look out

Michalek - Spezza - Alfie
Shannon - Regin - Kovey
Folingo - Cullen - Fisher
Rutuu - Kelly - Neil

Chester, Dono, Cheechoo and z.SMith ready to play sounds awsome to me.

Anonymous said...

Don't think it depends on the teams situation so much as what he wants. Loyalty is a 2-way steet, so if he doesn't want to uproot himself (or his family in Alfie's case) then you let him play out his contract without hounding him as to why, or will he change his mind (like the media did to Sundin). It's not easy picking the team that eventually wins the Cup, ask Hossa.

Anonymous said...

ahhhhhhh....c'mon Murray, get him signed, or get him out!!!

Anonymous said...

Whatever happened to rumours surrounding B. Burns oh Minni?! or were they just cogitated on this blog? i highly doubt it's possible but i'd love to send Volchie and (w/e else seems right) for burns... anybody?!

Anonymous said...

Wow last week everyone was in a panic about losing Volchenkov and now that Murray said the talks are getting nowhere everyone decides he sucks!? Come on people he's out second best defenceman, don't kid yourselves he is key!

Joey said...

The Deadline was waaaaaaay more interesting before the salary cap.

SensChirp said...

Capitals kicked tires on Volchenkov but the asking price was too high.

In the end they bring Jurcina back in the fold from Columbus.

BMUR said...

TRADE HIM!

The less "ME-First" Russians this team has the better!

He can go the KHL for all I care. Selfish bum!

Anonymous said...

Hey chirp, what were the rumoured offers from the caps for volchy?

Anonymous said...

Would love to know what Washington offered...

Anonymous said...

Selfish bum? Me-first? That's why he puts his body in front of all those slap shots?

Allan said...

sound move on the caps part - they have somebody that can help them now without over paying on Volchenkov

if he doesn't sign an extension or get traded they are in pole position to snap him up as a free agent

Anonymous said...

Smid please, Smid please!!!

Anyways the deadline is past so...very boring day.

Anonymous said...

Last night opened my eyes. I watched him and when the puck was on his stick he can do nothing with it. Cant clear the zone, he either fans on one timers or shoots the puck into a forwards legs. 4- 4.5mil is way to much to be paying a shot blocker. We have Sutton he may not be as good as Volchenkov but if hes cheaper then hes what we need. This team is in cap troubles.

Anonymous said...

Hamhuis is no longer available... staying put with his team...

Anonymous said...

"nicknames are fun" from the guy calling himself "Harry Pubes" .... shudder

no duh said...

To all who think the deadline is passed and there won't be any more deals...YOU'RE WRONG!

Those deals have the League's seal of approval, the remaining ones, if there are any, could be on Bettman's people's desk pending his approval.

Anonymous said...

Should be
alfie-Fisher-Cullen
foligno-Spezza-Michalek

the Alfie-Spez-Michalek has to stop.

Anonymous said...

Damn the deadline is passed and we didnt do a thing with Volchenkov, Lee, Donovan and Kelly. Is it just me or we always end up with players that are UFA's and never come back the other season and the Coyotes are able to go get Wolski? I'd rather have Wolski than Cullen AND Sutton. We never make splashes at the deadline... Anyways can't wait to see Sutton's play.. maybe we wont be so much dependent on Volchy now.

Anonymous said...

We have the 4th biggest deal of the year as per tsn! Bring on the cup!!!

Rizzo said...

By the way - Spezza=Wizard with the puck. No drop in his play after the break, that cross-ice laser to Michalek was tape to tape.

Keep Spezza and Michalek together, speed+skill=Wins.

Rizzo said...

Corvo to the Caps: have fun, that guy is GARBAGE when the pressure's on.

Even though he's a Sens killer, the Caps now have two MAJOR defensive liabilities in Green and Corvo.

Anonymous said...

With Volchenkov staying, we are now handcuffed to give him what he wants or letting him walk for nothing. Hopefully we can trade his rights come deadline time. Heres to Volchenkov playing amazing in the weeks to come!

ugh...

Harry Pubes said...

its ok to have two defensive liabilities when you can score that many goals.

Caps are ready to kill.

BM has a news conference at 3:30, I'm pretty sure I just heard that on TSN. Interesting considering we did nothing today.

Anonymous said...

can they negotiate right up until July 1?

Anonymous said...

Anon 3:03 they got the only goal last night and have been on fire. Why whine now?

Anonymous said...

This team is never going to get pushed over the top with Murray and his refusal to make a bold move

mooyootoo said...

What do you mean Fish? BM has to announce...um...oh.

Rizzo said...

Harry, with that goaltending and those two D men, they better score 6 a night, because they're going to let in 5.

D wins championships.

Rizzo said...

Ryan Whitney for Visnovsky.

Too bad he isn't headed here.

Anonymous said...

How long is Murray's contract again?

Anonymous said...

WTF TSN.. cut off Brian Murray when he starts to talk about Volchenkov (the only thing anyone cared about today) so the Leafs can talk about having an AHL Team in the NHL now.

Anonymous said...

Thanks TSN for cutting off Ottawa twice.

Anonymous said...

"That's the point 12:54pm... GM's do not have a choice but to give NMC/NTC's. That's why they should be eliminated in the next CBA. It completely neuters GM's around the league."

I disagree with this. You ALWAYS have a choice. Giving any player a NTC or NMC clause seriously handcuffs you. If you do give them the player should NOT get any term. You want a NTC? Fine, but sign for only 2-3 years or get a long-term and the NTC expires after two years. Giving a player a NTC removes that player's motivation and desire to succeed, they get way too complacent imo.

As for Anton, glad he's not gone but I fear Murray will give him an 8-year deal or something crazy. No more than 3 years, no more than 4.0 and skip the NTC/NMC.

As for the deadline today, at least we didn't get Aaron Ward. That's a good trade in and of itself. Hoping for a good round of playoff hockey before we get dismantled by an elite team.

Go Sens!

Anonymous said...

Anon @ 3:35

It's for one more year, but basically he's here for the rest of his life. Melnyk won't want to make the effort to replace him with someone better and the media are afraid to challenge him. Just live with Murray, hopefully one day we can win something then he'll go away.

My hope is that he leaves after next year, that'll be 30 years of non-winning and it should be enough for him to realize he can't get it done.

The Corvo to Washington deal is sick, taht D is going to be lethal!

SensChirp said...

The Sens Twitter feed has the presser up now.

Meh said...

Oh well....... Trades can go either way at the deadline and Ottawa has had some that were a bust in years past. It's all a big gamble so while I wanted to see something big and magical we have a team that outside of last night has been playing pretty well. This is what we have so lets get behind and forget about what could have been!!

Andre said...

Fuck TSN. "Bryan, what is the situation with Volchenkov and did you get any calls about him?"

"Sure, we have been talking to his agent and.." WAIT, BRIAN BURKE IS ABOUT TO TELL US WHAT HE HAD FOR LUNCH, CUT TO TORONTO NOW!!!!!

And for those crapping on Corvo, stop listening to TSN and Bubu Garrioch and formulate your own opinions. Corvo wasn't the best defensively but he makes up for it in offense. He was played awesome during the cup run in 07 and he hasn't been bad in Carolina.

Anonymous said...

I'm really concerned about the defence of this team. Sutton is no better that a 5-6 d-man. We still dont have a top two defencemen. Karlsson is still a year or two away. (If he stays healthy and dosn't have the snot knocked out of him.) I like Murray but his inaction today reminded me of Muckler.

Weren't the Leafs supposed to be getting all kinds of top picks for Poni and Stempniak?

Burke should have stayed in bed.

Harry Pubes said...

I don't think you can hate on Murray too much here.

Minus Pheonix and the Caps. He made just as many moves as anyone else really. They just didn't happen on deadline day.

I like the moves. Kinda wish we got Torres instead of Cullen. But I like Murray's moves.

What is the deal with contract talk with Chanks now? Is Murray really done until the season is over? I don't know the rules here at all.

Anonymous said...

Bahaha I love how the Caps just got worse today!

Anonymous said...

If I were murray, i would of made the exact same moves, he has been excellent so far this season, forwards we are stacked, the D is not perfect but good, and we potentially have 2 starters as goalies....added 2 new guys without giving up to much of the future.....we are on top of our division, in the summer we were expected to be out of the playoff picture ahahaha........what the hell are the leafs doing? no top picks or nothing, while canes has traded away all there players and got decent returns...seems like they got a good plan going, while the leafs im still confused about....

Anonymous said...

expectations are soooo low for the sens lol oh man, playoffs are going to be intense, this team is stacked and way better then the one in 07 cup

MV said...

Washington getting Corvo scares me a little. With Green and Corvo on the back end to play with their dynamic forwards, defending against the caps could get tough...

Anonymous said...

MV

Corvo, Green, Semin, and Ovechkin on the ice at the same time = tons of giveaways. Corvo is a bum. Period.
