Back to Reality

(UPDATE 11:58 AM)- Too good to be true I guess. Lundqvist will start.

(UPDATE 11:53 AM)- Gaborik was not on the ice for the Rangers this morning. Alex Auld could get the start for NYR.

(UPDATE 11:43 AM)- According to Bruce Garrioch, the asking price for Hamhuis is a 1st round pick and a scoring winger. That seems unbelievably high...

I've got to admit it's going to feel a little strange sitting down the watch an Ottawa Senators game tonight. Feels like an eternity since we last saw our Sens in action.

But tonight, it's back to reality as the Sens host the New York Rangers. Puck drop is at 7:30 PM.

With the trade deadline just a day away, rumours and speculation are at an all time high. Yesterday's news about Anton Volchenkov really makes the next couple of days interesting.

I really get the sense that interview may have just been a negotiating tactic on Murray's part but we shall see. Everyone I've talked is saying there is a very real chance Volchenkov could be moved.

Ottawa still wants to add another body to the back end but names are being crossed off the list at a pretty good clip.

Hamhuis to Philly is apparently all but done. Leopold is a Penguin. Zidlicky is expected to re up in Minny and Grebeshkov went to the Preds.

Names like Seidenberg, Sutton, Foster and Ward are still out there so Murray still has time to shop.

Should be a busy couple of days around here so I'll try to post updates(including Game Day info) as I get them!

You make it sound like its a bad thing that the Sens are back Chirp! GO SENS GO!

I can't imagine Murray moving Volchenkov unless a replacement was coming back, which I just can't see playoff teams doing, it may be the right thing to do but I don't think he gets moved, perhaps at the draft for a pic but not now.

Out of the names rumored, Seidenberg is the only one worth while, otherwise I think we should just stay put with what we have, we can't afford to give up anymore pics, especially for those scrubs.

Finally, any news on who is net tonight? Do they start Leclaire fresh or go with the hot hand before the break?

SensChirp said...

Not a bad thing at all! In fact, just found out I'll be going to the game tonight.

Harry Pubes said...

Supposably 2 offers for Sutton. Both involve a 2nd round pick. I think that is all too.

I dont watch the Isles enough. Is that worth it? or can it be written off as expected slight over payment for a trade deadliner?

I like the idea of getting Sutton. I like the idea of the Sens being scary to play, for physical reasons. It would kinda be a first.

One thing is for sure. I am taking tomorrow off Work and Snowboarding.

Coffee and Baileys and Trade Deadline Day!
Here We GO!

I really don't understand why we're looking for rentals. For BM it's already the perfect storm: the team is playing great. He can just say he didn't want to disrupt team chemistry, and not give up anymore picks. Are there people out there who actually believe with a couple trades the Sens could win the cup? Didn't think so, so mortgage a promising future for an impossible cup run? I don't get it.

"Impossible" Cup run. Hardly...

JRMcPeeWee said...

Not an impossible run to the cup imo, look at what Carolina did a few years back.

Going to the game tonight, should be a good one.

does anyone know if any current sens have twitter accounts? I know there are a number of NHLers who twit, but do any sens?

I'm really confused by this consistent Ward rumour...seems like a good guy to have around, but we already have ample leadership in the room, add guys like Richardson on the coaching staff as well...but to add a guy like Ward would slow down the back-up considerably. What I think we need is a legitimate stud who can score, is physical, and can move the puck...Kuba is ok, but he is not at that level. I know that sounds dumb because everyone wants and needs that, but I just don't see the purpose in picking up this guy. Feel free to prove me wrong!

Senschirp, Thanks for the update. Do you think the A-Train will resign by 3PM tomorrow or do you think he could be traded? Thank you

Mark said...

WTF is Murray waiting for, now is the time to act for the signing of ATrain and making a trade for another defencemen. Geez, this sitting w/ your thumb up your ass is not doing us any good, everyone else is jumping in to grab the better defencemen. Fine, trade ATrain to Atlanta for Kubina, Cowen replaces as the shutdown dman.

SensChirp said...

Max,

To be honest, I feel a last minute contract coming on.

Should be very interesting though.

jugger said...

They will not trade AV, atleast not until the offseason. They need him for the playoffs and will probably pick up some half-ass veteran d-man. Its the only situation that suits the sens right now. Bmurray does not give up picks easy and won't for any of these potential dmen.

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the update chirp..can't see Volchenkov going anywhere even if they don't have a contract signed on the deadline.

Ward?? I read the Canes boards and he appears to have the puck control of Picard and the speed of Jason Smith.YIKES!!!!!

Anonymous said...

The SENS have a better team now than the one that went to the Cup against Anaheim.

We should take a swipe at it this year. Hell, there are great prospects coming up in the minors - no need to worry folks.

Anonymous said...

Why wait?? it seems that last minte deals evade us each year.

C'mon Murray get robidas, turco and foster and be done with it.

Patrick said...

Thanks for posting the forward lines. I know that posting the D lines is usually pointless due to the infrequent changes, but due to the D shortages and injuries (and possible trades?) could you post the D lines for the next few games as well? That would be great as I don't know about the rest of you, but I have no idea who is paired with who anymore on our D.

THE BLACK TERROR said...

I'm still betting that Murray will trade for a defenseman, but it will be someone who hasn't been mentioned yet.

Forget Sutton, I would love to see Foster is a Sens jersey instead. They may both be pylons (not sure as I dont watch NYI and TB that much), but Foster has the shot on the back end we've been craving for.
Special Teams wins championships!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Any updates on the injuries to Foligno and Karlsson? Was hoping #65 would be back after the olympics.

Chirp- pick whichever adjective you like: improbable, unlikely, whatever. The point is: this team will not win the cup simply by trading away picks and over-paid players. It would be better to keep our picks and run with what we've got (since it's going pretty well anyway), than trade away the future for an UNLIKELY cup run.

I love when people trot out the Canes cup win. They were 1 point away from winning the east, third overall. And the Lightning's run before them: #1 seed in the east, 2nd overall. REAL underdogs.

I will happily eat my lack of enthusiasm if all the "trade for the cup" runners eat their's if we don't win the cup.

Anon 10:40: who are these "great prospects in the minors"? Denis Hamel?

Andrew said...

Simple...get foster.

geoff said...

why is everyone bringing up Foster. He isn't good enough to crack our current top 6. Our power-play is fine (with a full line-up), and we don't need to aquire a player to take up a roster space so that he can go out on the ice 4-5 times a game and rip shots into the glass.
Give it up -

Anonymous said...

sign A-Train to front loaded contract with the majority of the money coming in the next 3-4 yrs while Karlsson and Cowen's contracts are inexpensive. Phillips is the guy who should take the hometown discount if he wants to reamin a Sen til his days are done.

Anonymous said...

Am I the only one that's kinda surprised that Mike Brodeur isn't getting the start.

Anonymous said...

Hey Chirp any news on how foligno is making on his road to recovery?
Do they have a timeline which they expect him back in the line up?

Thanks

tomb

BeJamin said...

Honestly my expectation is that if Murray is able to resign A-Train the only deal he's going to make is getting Ward for like a 4th-6th round pick. He isn't willing to give up the ridiculous assets teams are demanding to pick up one of the better D as he shouldn't be.

Anonymous said...

forget about Mike Brodeur already.

Anonymous said...

I love the forward lineup from practice, everyone is where they should be, IMO. Well I would prefer Winnie centering the 4th.

With 19 games remaining, I would be surprised if Leclair played more than 10 of those but you never know, if he is ready when his opportunity comes....

Now if we could just get this defense thing sorted out we will be in good shape.

Derrick said...

According to pg if you don't finish 1st in your conference you have no chance at winning the cup....3rd place is pretty horrible isn't it.

Anonymous said...

People, we need a puck mover. Even someone like Seidenberg will help. We have enough shutdown guys like Volchy, Phillips, Carkner

Anonymous said...

Even if he doesn't sign we should keep him. Hell we're trying to go far, with him in the lineup its possible.

If we lose him - boo hoo - we'll sign a free agent in the summer. Why get a third rounder for him???

Lets risk it.

GO SENS GO!

Anonymous said...

I have a feeling we'll be getting both Seidenberg and Hamhuis... Just a gut feeling.

Anonymous said...

I agree with you Chirp I don't think Murray trades Volchenkov.

If Murray does not sign Volchenkov before 3pm tomrrow I won't be upset I say wait until the draft Murray can one of the rfa this summer for Volchenkov I say that Murray should trade Volchenkov to Chicago of Washington at the draft.

As for the trade deadline I would like to see Murray get one of Andy Sutton or Kurtis Foster and I would like to see Murray get Colby Armstrong.

Chirpy, no one in their right mind is going to pay a 1st and a good winger for Hamhuis.

If that's the going rate, then Ottawa could probably get two 1st's for Volchenkov. That's nuts.

any truth to the jurcina coming to Ottawa rumours?

Anonymous said...

I'll pass on Hamhuis.... I think Dennis Seidenberg will be a Senator tommorow. Ottawa is going to hold on to Volchy for the rest of the season, and when July 1'st comes around, Kuba will be gone and Volchy will be resigned. And Murray will probably bring Aaron Ward for some dressing room character.

SensChirp said...

Thanks jugger. Posted that at the bottom of the blog. Sounds like Auld could go for NYR.

jugger said...

zidlicky signs 3 year 12 mill with minny. Guess hes out...or maybe not?

SensChirp said...

Check that. Lundqvist will start.

jugger said...

Also, that siedenberg is dealt a 1.25 million bonus at end of this season so... might be hard to take that on.

Anonymous said...

As for Volchy -- not only threat of UFA and what other teams would pay for him -- not sure how many would go $5 Mil. The threat I think is the KHL which throws crazy salaries at Russian players.
If he isn't traded by tomorrow.. and does not sign -- then he will be traded at the draft.
It is risky as you won't get much other than a pick -- unless he gets a contract with that other team.

Al said...

The reason I think they want a 1st draft pick is because Hamhuis was drafted Drafted by Nashville in 2001 (1/12). I am not saying that he's worth that much but maybe that's how they're thinking in Nashville.

Side note:

no russian team wants volchenkov. Hes a shot blocker... they want fast scoring players. Those are the players they steal from us.

If Volchenkov is traded I am thinking the deal would look like this.

To:Washington Capitals
Volchenkov
TO:Ottawa Senators
Eric Fehr
Alzner or
Carlson

@Annon 10:52 AM

I don't think Murray will trade away his picks, I used Carolina as an example of a team of not alot of stars who worked hard and well together.

ottmedic said...

Per Steve Zipay, Marian Gaborik will not play tonight. No word on whether it relates to his lacerated thigh or possible groin injury that he suffered during the Olympics.

In addition, Michael Del Zotto will not play due to his lacerated chest. Corey Potter to start in his place.

Anonymous said...

A first and a scoring winger. So Philly will get him for a 2nd and a prospect

Anonymous said...

This team isn't winning the Stanley Cup with its current roster. They had several glorious chances during the late 90s and they never had the right mix of leadership, grit, goaltending and experience. The East now belongs to Pittsburgh, New Jersey, Washington and so on.

We'll get past the first round because the players don't want to be called chokers and underachievers, then we'll run into Pittsburgh or Washington and it will likely get messy.

As for Volch...I certainly hope that Mendes wasn't right on the radio this morning that they'll let him go to free agency without getting something in return...

Anonymous said...

I would hate to see Volch in anything but a Sens uni...but that interview given by Murray yesterday says it all. Yes, it's a negotiation tactic that he is using against the Volchenkov camp AND perspective trade partners.

It's also a way to calm the waters with the fans should a trade take place. He just let us all know that he has tried to re-sign #24, but he wanted too much $$.

As far as trade rumours go, SenSay has interesting one involving Anton.

http://sensay.wordpress.com/2010/03/01/a-train-pulling-out-of-town/#comments

It's interesting because it hinges on Zidlicky being extended before the trade takes place. "Russo" is reporting that a 3 year deal is all but done with Zidlicky with the only stumbling block being a NTC.

If Sensay's source is right,(it makes the timing of the Shannon extension make more sense), would that be enough of a return and how much better does it make the sens?

according to Sensay, possible trade would look like this:

To Ducks:
Volchenkov

To Sens:
Eminger and 2nd rnd 2010 pick

THEN

To Sens:
Zidlicky (signed), Nolan

To Wild:
2nd rnd 2010 pick, Lee, Shannon

Anon 12:45pm,

You do realize what the Senators record is this year against the best in the East, right?

vs Washington - 2wins, 1loss
vs Pittsburgh - 2wins, 2losses
vs New Jersey - 1win, 3losses
vs Buffalo - 4wins, 0losses

Total record against the 4 other best East teams: 9 wins, 6 losses.

They only have a losing record against New Jersey.

How can you honestly say that they can't be considered as a contender from the East? I'd say they have as good of a shot as anyone.

Washington isn't going anywhere with their current goaltending.

Pittsburgh is just ripe for a playoff collapse.

New Jersey's goaltending is starting to show it's age.

Buffalo is depending far too much on Miller, and you can see that the season is starting to wear on him.

ALL of the top teams in the East have their flaws. Ottawa's are just as bad as anyone else's, no more, no less.

And considering Ottawa's 2nd half, I wouldn't bet against them.

Is "impossible cup run" the same thing as "impossible 11 game win streak" or "impossible cup run as a 4 seed"?
