Shannon Signs for One Year

On the road to Tremblant and just heard that forward Ryan Shannon has signed a one year deal with the Senators.

I'll try and post more later if I can.

Good deal for a hard worker. I really like what Shannon brings to this team.

I think it is good signing.

If Murray decide to trade Jesse Winchester then it gives Murray more options.

I think that Winchester has more value trade wise then Shannon and Murray that is why I am thinking Winchester maybe traded at the draft or during the summer.

And still no Volchie signing. Ever more worrying...

Yes!!! I love Shannon :)

as of late vochenkov hasnt played like he used to, him and phillips have had some miscommunication and his hustle hasnt been there.

LOL...USA 6 - Finland 0...End of 1s.. haha wow

if winchester is extended - kelly is as good as gone

Anonymous said...

Who cares about Volchenkov, we all saw how good he was against the Canadians.

Gavin said...

Americans are looking strong :p 6 goals on 11 shots.

Shannon is going to make $675,000 next year according to the Ottawa Sun.

Good signing. I hope Murray doesn't trade Regin for a top notch dman like Hamhuis or Zidlickly. Hopefully he can include Lee and Winchester in a package, or possibly, Jim O'Brien and a pick.

Thoughts?

Tysen said...

Bad signing, Shannon sucks. Unless we are trading him than this was a bad deal. Undersized speedsters are a dime a dozen.

zs said...

Good signing,

I know a lot of people don't like his size for a bottom 6 forward. But his board play and puck retrieval is amazing. As well you can't have enough guys who have the ability to step up into those top 6 if someone gets injured.

Patrick said...

I agree - Shannon in a good signing. Works hard, makes a difference, and is affordable.

Anonymous said...

Meh, not bad as long as its not over 1.2 mill, priority should be Volchenkov and Foligno though Murray.

ItsMeMario said...

Great signing Shannon Speedy forward who can work the point on the powerplay. Any Info on the CASH?

Anonymous said...

Yes cause one bad game vs the Canadians clearly means Volchenkov is no good, never mind the years he's put his face infront of pucks for the Sens and kept forwards in check coming into the zone in fear of his bone crushing hits, god some people are dense...

Rizzo said...

For the cost I don't think anyone in the world can knock this signing.

Anonymous said...

American arent looking strong kip was like crap, as was the whole fin D

pegsensfan said...

Great signing especially if it is for the reported $625000.

Whoever thinks this is a bad signing is a little foolish considering the low amount of money being paid to a versatile player.

Anonymous said...

kelly is being traded

terry k said...

Great deal. The cost is low, so we get great value.

Anonymous said...

I like Shannon a lot less than Clouston does, but at $675000, it's a body to fill a spot if needed.

Shannon has 16 points in 55 games with PP time and is minus 8.

I just don't see him as a top 6 forward (at 0.3 point/game), and he does not have the size to be a 3rd or 4th line guy. Not sure where he fits in.

cheap signing, but shannon has been useless this year. i would of rather seen zach smith play next year

does anyone know where I can find the canada vs slovakia game on the radio? Thanks.

steve said...

shows he wants to stay in ottawa, he litterally could have signed anywhere else in the league for that amount of money

PistolPete said...

This guy? Seriously?! Eff that.
I'd rather have Shean Donovan at $600k then this guy.

If Dono had the minutes this midget is playing, I'm sure his numbers would be better than Shannon's.

Dono is a warrior, the type of guy we need come playoff time.

Sign and trade. Fingers crossed.

Andrew said...

'He works hard': I love this argument, especially when it's used to support the signing of mediocre players that don't produce.

Amen to Zach Smith replacing this plug.

Shack5322 said...

I don't know how you can say Shannon has been useless this year. He was a big part of Ottawa turning its season around when our top line was hurt. He had a slow start to the season but has certainly turned it around. He might be small but goes into the corners and comes out with the puck more times than not. Great signing!

Anonymous said...

anybody knocking this signing should beat their head against a wall. He's a young legitimate depth nhler with a ton of speed. at 625k who do you think you are going to get to take that salary? we have guys in bingo making more...

on that note, i saw Shannon at best buy doing a little celebratory shopping this afternoon... good on him.

ps Winchester isn't going anywhere, he's kelly's replacement, he's young, he's cheap and has more upside than kelly.

I dont think you'll see anyone on the current roster leave except for potentially our friend donovan for some playoff depth.

cheers,

Andrew

Good signing at the right price.
It took Shannon 20+ games to recover from the concussion he suffered the third game into the season. He has been very good for the last 25 games.

Anonymous said...

Kelly is a great P/K guy, would'nt miss hm though...
Just hope we keep our 1st and 2nd round picks....

Halak is up on the trading block.. would look good in a sens uniform...

CR said...

Pending on what roster moves take place by the time the opener next year takes place, Shannon very well could just be taking over Donovans role while being capable of doing a little more. I do not like it if they find a way to keep Zac Smith off the roster in preference to Shannon come October.

I still think Shannon has a hard time not being a waiver wire suit case on any other top 10 team in the league lucky for him CC loves him.

I will admit he has grown on me latley I was not much of a fan at the start of the year.

Benjamin said...

Very good signing at that price. It also sets the bar for the other RFA's coming up.

Foligno and Regin will likely finish maybe 15 points higher than Shannon. It will be hard to justify paying them anything above 1.5M a season when Shannon was a UFA and signed for almost half.

If I had to guess what our team will look like next year I would say:

Michalek Spezza Alfredsson
Foligno Michalek Kovalev
Smith Regin Shannon
Ruutu Winchester Neil

Phillips Volchenkov
Karlsson ??? (I'm feeling Z Michalek)
Carkner ??? (I doubt Campoli sticks around or anyone makes the jump other than Z.Smith from Bingo next year)

On the Binghamton note, their lines for next year could be insane!

Cowick, Pettersson, Hoffman, Silvferberg, Cowen, Weircioc and Lehner will all likely make the move.

Hats off to the Slovaks - they had a great Olympics.

When will the Sens give Mike Brodeur a start?

Anonymous said...

Sens are getting vokoun and Seidenberg....

Book it!

Hax said...

No brainer (assuming the reported money is correct). You can never have too many cheap utility guys. Whether to replace an injured or traded guy, push the other players to keep working or as a nice little addition to a trade.

And all of that is assuming he's not simply a useful guy in the lineup (which he usually is).

If they had given him $1.5M then I'd wonder how smart it was, but for less than half that it's really a slam dunk.

Now get A-train signed puh-lease.

Chaps said...

I'm happy with the Shannon signing. The guy's got great speed, and has pretty good puck possession abilities. He can also fill in our top-6 during injuries. For the price, you really can't go wrong. And it's only 1 year, so we're not locked in forever with him, so it keeps our options open going forward.

A little off topic, but I'm getting the feeling Murray may try to trade Leclaire.

I know I'll probably get bashed by some for saying this (I actually like Leclaire myself), but it would make sense. If we're gearing up for a playoff push, I think we need someone who can be counted on 100%.

Don't get me wrong, Elliott has been pretty good lately, but does anyone think he has what it takes for a (hopefully) deep playoff run? And Leclaire, well we all know he has the ability and potential to be great, but due to his lack of playing time, he is wildly inconsistent. I don't know about you, but if I'm Murray/Clouston, I wouldn't want to risk putting Leclaire in, then getting a few bad goals against which would completely destroy the confidence we have going right now - and then have start playing like we were last year and earlier this season.

I'm happy with our group of forwards right now, and we all know Murray is going to make a move for a good d-man, but I'd also like to see him swing something for a goalie as well.

to anon 9:11pm....did you forget filip kuba is on our team...hes one of our top4 D

Anonymous said...

I like the singing alot.
It opens the door for Murray to trade Winchester or Chris Kelly or both.

Here is what I think the lineup is going to look like next year.

Michalek/Spezza/Alfredsson
Ladd/Fisher/Kovlev
Foligno/Regin/Shannon
Ruutu/Smith/Neil

Phillips/Volchenkov
Kuba/Karlson
???/Carkner
Cowan
Campoli

Alex said...

with Cody Bass, Zack Smith, and Shaun Donovan, either in bingo or scratched I don't understand this move.

P.S. Is it a 2 way? if not bad signing

Anonymous said...

I don't mind the signing as long as we still have room for Volch.

But, if Murray offers Volch $3.5M and Volch wants $4M, I would rather give Shannon's money to Volch in order to Keep Volch.

Nowadays, we always have a couple of guys sitting in the press box eating cap space. I would rather the Sens keep the extras in Bingo to save cap, so that we can keep guys like Volch.

Tyler said...

benjamin,

cowen will push for the N next year. maybe play a small number of games in binghy to get used to the speed. Murray has said that a couple times. The others are right though. Lehner will be there for 2-3 years to develop, as will most others on that list. i'm thinking that weircoch will be the only one to make the move in 1 more year.

Anonymous said...

Big Robidas to Ottawa rumours resurfacing. Have you heard anything Chirp? I'm guessing they'd have to part with Lee, Foligno + though.

Anonymous said...

If Hockeybuzz called Robidas to Ottawa, I'll be surprised if it happens.

Benjamn said...

Robidas is a UFA nest season, I would assasinate Murray if he traded Foligno plus for him.

I would guess Lee+ for Robidas.

Also I think Weircioch and Cowen will be paired in Bingo for the year to build chemistry.

Anonymous said...

Trading for another old fart would be a very stupid move. I'm praying Murray doesn't give away any more picks for geriatrics. Our farm system is already pathetic enough as it is.

Anonymous said...

I don't want to trade Foligno as part of a package for Robidas as I think he has 60 pt potential. I have an odd feeling that the Shannon signing might be part of a sign & trade. Lee + Shannon + pick for Robidas do it? If not, maybe Wiercioch straight up?

Anonymous said...

I guess I really do not know how to manage a team within a salary cap... I have always thought paying 4 mil would be too much for a player to provide good D, block shots and land some monster hits... but yet all I hear from people is that Murray MUST sign him even though he may cost 4-5mil... I guess Im off my nogin when I think a player earning 4-5mil must produce MORE then good d, blocked shots and hits... Even with the skill set Vol has, I couldnt see myself shelling out more then 2.5-3 mil when there are cheaper options out there (thus giving us more cash to fill other holes in the system)... but then again that is just me!!!

Blood Red Army said...

Benjamin, Robidas is 32 and signed until 2014 at a hit of $3.3M. NOT a ufa.

Anonymous said...

@Benjamin: Robidas is signed through 2013-14, which is why it may take a lot to get him.

http://blog.taragana.com/sports/2009/10/01/stars-sign-defenseman-stephane-robidas-to-132m-four-year-extension-through-2013-14-season-33411/

Anonymous said...

Do we know for sure whether or not Cowen is eligible for Bingo next season? The requirement for players out of the CHL is 4 seasons of junior or 20 years old by Dec 31 (the latter Cowen does not meet). He played only 6 games in his first season, but does that count as a full season?

Anonymous said...

Not a very good idea to trade Wiercioch for Robidas. A blue-chip prospect for an old #3-4 d? C'mon, get real.

JustSayin said...

Shannon is a heart and soul guy!

"Just Sayin" that to spark a bunch of responses.

Anonymous said...

as for the wiercioch for robidas trade suggested by anon 5:09, i don't think it's that bad of an idea considering robidas is signed long term. wiercioch is projected to be nothing more than what robidas is now. i would prefer to hang on to wiercioch, but if push comes to shove, i might do it if i were bm. i definitely would NOT do karlsson/cowen for robidas though, as i want to see them paired together in the near future and have higher potential.

Anonymous said...

Any word on a potential Mike Brodeur contract extension? He deserves a one-way deal. Do it b-murr.

Benjamin said...

Oops, anyone know when Robidas resigned? I could have sworn I saw lately that he was a UFA.

And I believe that Cowen can play for Bingo, despite only playing 6 games I'm pretty sure it counts as a season.

Anonymous said...

To all those blind Mike Brodeur supporters, take one minute and check out his AHL stats this year and you'll be singing a different tune.

If one were to count only the first few games a goalie played, Patrick Lalime would be the best goalie in NHL history...

Anonymous said...

I am hoping that Murray gets one of Kurtis Foster or Andy Sutton before the trade deadline on Wednesday.

Also I am hoping that Murray can get Colby Armstrong before the deadline.

Anonymous said...

I would like to see Murray get James Neal from the Dallas Stars and Robdais.

I know it would take alot to get both but I think it would be worth it.

Anonymous said...

If it is true that the Flyers are looking to trade Scott Hartnell I would like to see Murray get Scott Hartnell.

JasonKOttawa said...

Hi Sens Chirp....what are your thoughts on this possible move?

To Ottawa Senators:
Marty Turco $ 5,700,000
Jeff Woywitka $ 650,000

To Dallas Stars:
Pascal Leclaire $ 3,800,000
Brian Lee $ 1,275,000

Pascale Leclaire and Brian Lee over the past year have lost the confidence of Sens management. Leclaire's string of bad luck continued with injuries while Brian Lee whom had previously requested a trade wasn't showing much improvement.

Leclaire's movement free's up 3.8 million in salary for next years cap and the addition of Marty Turco provides a stable veteran presence in net. Turco, along with Brodeur, is widely regarded as one of the best puck-handling goalies in the NHL which could prove to be very valuable for the Sens. On a side note Marty Turco owns a home in Sault Ste. Marie where he already spends much of his summer.

Woywitka is a two-way defenseman. He is a strong skater, and can fire the puck from the point well. He has good size, but he is not an overly physical player.

Wilco said...

Why not trade Campoli and Lee for a good D-man. Both will not play for Ottawa this season.

Cowan will play for the big club next year.

Not ready to give up on Leclaire and definately not for an old over the top Turco

jugger said...

Apparently,

Milan Hedja from Columbus has been looked into by Murray. Hes only making 2 million and is a UFA after this season. Pretty good d-man if you ask me...Kubina and Hamuis will not be coming to ottawa... too expensive. Its going to be a cheaper d-man 2 mil range, youll see.

Anonymous said...

Yeah it's kinda funny the Mike Broduer bandwagon thing. He played what 2 games?

Anonymous said...

Who actually still goes to hockey buzz, when has that guy ever got anything right? You just support his nonsense

MMC said...

I've said this many times before, and will do so again. You DO NOT trade Patrick Wiercioch. He is our best defensive prospect. I think he has more potential than either of Karlsson or Cowen (especially the latter), and I think VERY highly of Erik Karlsson.

IMO, Wiercioch will look a lot, and play, like Bouwmeester when filled out. And maybe with more offensive upside.

Anonymous said...

Ottawa has two deals nearly ready to go to help shore up the back-end.

Cody Bass and 3rd rounder in 2011 for Jordan Leopold.

5th rounder in 2010 for Aaron Ward.

Anonymous said...

I think we should keep Wiercioch, unless we get a player like Burns in return. As far as comparisons go, I think Cowen is more like Bouwmeester, physical defensive d-man with decent offensive skills. I think Wiercioch is more like a Kuba type player.

Anonymous said...

niice!! shannons awsome and works hard every game

Ottawa has two deals in the works.

3rd round draft pick for Colby Armstrong

Brian Lee for Andy Sutton
