Off to Calgary!

Looks like it's going to be another busy week for me. I'm flying to Calgary this afternoon and will return sometime Wednesday night.

I should be able to keep things up to date while I'm gone though.

Just wanted to pass along a quick rumour that was sent my way this morning. Word is the Senators continue to shop defenceman Brian Lee along with forward Jonathan Cheechoo. With his price tag, Cheechoo isn't drawing a whole lot of interest.

There was a rumour floating around last week that the Kings may be willing to take a chance on him but I haven't been able to confirm their level of interest.

If they can't find a suitable trade then they are more than willing to hang on to him for the rest of the season.

I think I have made my feelings on Cheechoo pretty clear this season. I love the guys work ethic and by all accounts he's an excellent team player. I get the feeling that given the opportunity, Cheechoo is going to score some big goals for this team down the stretch.

I'll update again once I'm on the ground in Calgary...

Trade Cheechoo for a bag of pucks and some new sticks!

Work ethic aside, he doesnt produce and thats what matters, I dont care if the guy tries hard, he ahs nothing to show for it.

I see that EK is still full of sh*t. He posted a trade rumour sending Lecavalier to Ottawa.

What a joke.

So... when the Canucks are in town you fly to Vancouver. When the Flames are in town you fly to Calagary. This is a little ironic no :)?

BeJamin said...

I also agree 100% about Cheechoo. Something interesting of note is that San Jose fans have repeatedly said Cheechoo plays his best hockey in the playoffs.

I think he's played well enough to stay. I'd prefer we hang onto him and then re-work his price-tag when the time comes. Having this guy around for 1.25M or lower would be great in future.

Cheechoo is apparently a touchy subject with some people (I managed to unintentionally upset someone with that topic last week), but I'm glad to hear that they are at least looking for some interest from other teams.

If we keep him for this year, that's fine with me as I don't think we're a "cup winning" team yet (still missing a top 4 d and top 6 forward in my opinion). I'm more interested in knowing what the off-season plans with him are, as I think that we some good moves we'll be a force to be reckoned with next year with his contract freed up.

I really am curious in regards to the lee situation. First there was the clouston fight on the bench with lee, then there was his demotion to AHL (prob due to his 2-way contract), but it really seems like he wasn't given a chance since the start of the season. I'm not implying that he's good or not (he certainly isn't worse than picard), but I really get the feeling that he angered someone in the organization somehow...

Anonymous said...

So the Canucks come to town and you head to Vancouver, now the Flames are coming and you head to Calgary, Detroit next?

Cheechoo plays hard and all, but if getting rid of him means a resigned Volchenkov then I will drive him to the airport.

C-Tos said...

Cheechoo score big goals??

He hasnt done so once this year.. he only scores goals in the last minute of games when we are up or down by 3 goals.. so in essence, useless goals...

How can you believe in Cheechoo based on what he has done, and not believe in Leclaire?

Funny how there are more Cheechoo supporters than Leclaire supporters sometimes.. kind of disgusting if you ask me

Ben said...

Long time reader, first time poster here. I could be one of the biggest Cheechoo Sens fan around, so pardon me if I seem biased.

The truth is 56 goal scorers are rare, even if they have Joe Thornton passing to them. It's just that Cheech has lost his wheels from his hernia surgeries (something I can relate to, had one last summer).

With that being said, I think he has potential to become a Heatley type of player where he stands in front of the net and waits for a pass. He has the shot and accuracy to do so (as seen at the skills competition yesterday). But when you've spent your whole life playing a certain style it takes time to adjust.

If only he didn't have that contract.....

Anyway, just my two cents.

Gorley said...

Keep Cheechoo, unless it's a valuable player coming back... Shipping Cheechoo away for a pick of some BS, just because, is a bad move...

He is not the best player, not at all, but he does not hurt the team when he's on the ice... he doesn't score much, but in my books, as long as you don't hurt the team by making mistake after mistake, you deserve to play. He is a very smart player, just like Donovan... they don't hurt the team when they get ice time...

I don't see the problem with him, at all!

Anonymous said...

I'm torn on Cheech.

Because I bet with his style of play he will get some clutch goals in the playoffs.

He doesn't mind getting dirty, and he has hands and doesn't quit.

If he could skate..

I also like the guy... but I don't think he's going to score more than empty netters.

I would do whatever it takes to shed the salary.

Banford Johnson said...

HMMMM !

Cheechoo and Lee for "nothing" frees up some Cap Space and allows Ottawa to sign Volchenkov ?

Anonymous said...

I'm with Chirp on this one. I think Cheechoo is a valuable contributor. Unfortunately, he's judged through the lens of his inflated salary and cap hit.

I still think that he can score a few goals if he's put in the right situation. In a playoff run, he's the type of guy who can score a few big, and unexpected goals.

I think the Sens will be fine if they keep him.

I also think they should keep Lee. Karlsson's hurt. Once you hurt that shoulder, you're at risk for re-occurence if the injury is not given enough time to heal.

Picard's not a very good replacement. Brian Lee is cheap and could do a better job, in my view. Also, if we cut Picard loose this summer, which we should, there is room for Lee next year.

It'd be stupid to deal Lee now.

Anonymous said...

Despite the fact that Cheechoo is a solid team player with a ton of hustle (and thank god for that, can you imagine what it would be like if he didn't give it everything every night?) I just can't see the Senators bringing him back next year with such a hefty salary cap hit ($3.5 mil next season I think).

Chirp, what are the odds of them buying him out at the end of year? I just feel as though he makes way too much to toil away on the third and fourth lines all year.

-Z

P.S. And if they were to buy him out,how exactly does that work again and how much would they be on the hook for, salary cap wise?

Anonymous said...

Hey Chirp.

have you heard anything about a deal being discussed with Edmonton? Clearly it's a rumour, but I'm wondering if you have heard it and what you think.

To EDM:
Winchester
Lee
Chechoo
2nd round pick

To OTT:
Cogliano
Moreau

I wonder if we'd be able to get Frolov out of this. We have some pretty big guns on the right wing in Alfredsson and Kovie, but not much on the left. We have Michalek and Foligno, but Foligno is more of a 3rd liner grinder in my opinion.

I can't agree more about Cheechoo,Every game latley he looks to be gaining more and more confidence and maybe Clouston will see that in him and put him with Spezza who can try to set him up for his shot. He won the most accurate shot in the Skills Comp so why not give him a chance to use his shot.

Cheechoo should spend a few games watching from the press box... In fact, I'm surprised they haven't done that yet with Donovan being a healthy scratch for the past couple of weeks.

and i agree with you, Cheech is a hard-working guy, but it would free up cap room if we move him, and that room could help us with signing Volch.

do you know what player/players we are trying to acquire and from what team?

GelatinousMutantCoconut said...

I don't know..I think it's time to demote him, and get whatever cap space we can by doing so. He's had enough of a chance. Donovan, Winchester and Smith all have good work ethic, but also provide better skating and grit.

If we assume that our top two lines are:

Michalek-Spezza-Alfredsson
Shannon-Fisher-Kovalev

then that leaves Foligno and Regin to man the third line. I'd prefer to keep the Ruutu-Kelly-Neil line intact. So we need a forward to complement Nick and Peter. Smith or Winchester could fit well there, much better than Cheechoo. Cheechoo drags his linemates down.

It's unfortunate because I admire his work ethic, but his time is done.

GelatinousMutantCoconut said...

Oh, and another good point someone made elsewhere: even if he's not demoted this year, he has to next year. We need that space to re-sign Volchenkov, Foligno, Regin, Shannon and Winchester plus fit Cowen in.

There's also mention of LA/Cheechoo here (scroll down):

If the rumor is true of Moller and a unknown dman my guess is it would be Randy Jones for cap reasons and he's probably the only dman they would give up before the playoffs.

Just speculating anyway, hopefully there is something to it though.

I think people who want Cheechoo out of here just don't pay enough attention to detail. We gain more by keeping him and re-signing him to a cheaper contract when the time comes. Something like 1.25M or less. He easily earns that.

He wins countless battles for his line mates with his size down low and is very difficult to take off the puck once he gets it. He's also got a great release which has certainly improved over the course of the year. He's also one of the smartest hockey players on our team. He has tremendous hockey sense and a nose for the dirty areas on the ice. I think he's a good guy to have around.

People knock him for his production but look at the role he's playing in. Zero PP time and zero time with a skilled set-up man. You put this guy down low and beside the net on the PP where Heatley used to stand and he scores 20 goals no problem.

The only thing anyone can legitimately complain about when it comes to Cheech is his speed. He's had hernia surgery, twice. He will probably never have the speed he used to. This is the first year in the past 3 that he's even been close to healthy. Two or three years from now as he stays healthy some of that speed might come back, but it's going to take a long time if it ever comes back at all.

...but worse

and craaaaazy contract for lecav don't forget, what will do about the defence?

BeJamin said...

If we were to get Vinny it would probably take Fisher + Lee + a 1st. If not more. Throw Cheechoo in there to balance the cap hits on both sides as the only reason Tampa would be doing this in the first place would be re-balance their cap situation going forward with Stamkos as the face of the franchise.

Reality is it'll never happen anyways. Lecav loves Tampa Bay, has already won his cup, and has an NTC. He's not going anywhere.

A question that just stumbled into my head while reading the comments on trades.

If Bryan Murray is at the end of his 3 Year Term and has not been offered a Extension, is it possible he is not willing to work his hardest...or is he really working that hard and we can`t seem to get any good trades...

I know GM Business is not strictly just trades; BUT it`s apart of it and this team is in need of a few.

With that being said. Is Murray going to stay due to his lack of improving this team... Or is he assuming his time is up, why should he bother...

p.s. question mark button is making this symbol É !!! so the ... are question marks

Luc Wolfe said...

washington doesn't play with much defense anyhow.... the reason cheechoo trade could work in tampa, is that the owner doesn't want to spend the big bucks, so technically having a guy like cheechoo could work in a trade with Vinny, kelly, ruutu, lee, picard, campoli are all names that might get the boot, even Kovalev, although I'm impress with his play!

JohnnyHolmes said...

I like Cheechoo, and I wanted him to do well, but it's not going to happen.

He has the worst plus/minus of any regular player with the least average ice time. I think Winchester averages a little less time, but he's been in and out of the lineup all year.

Cheechoo is finished. Hard work, hustle and playing with heart is great, but not at that salary.

He can't keep up anymore, and we can't afford to pay a 4th liner that kind of money.

I think if they can't unload him, they need to bury him in the minors and use that money somewhere that brings value to the team.

You can't blame Cheechoo for his contract and his injuries, but if I may borrow a line from Jerry Maguire, It's not show friends, it's show business"

4 years of massive decline. He has less than half the points he had last year in San Jose with 7 less games played.

He needs 16 points in 7 games to match the horrible season he had last year. That is how bad this guy is now.

The writing is on the wall if anyone wants to read it.

JustSayin said...

I'm sure all NHL GMs know that they can have Cheech if they want him. Love the guy but his contract makes him expendable. Kelly is close to that category himself given how close we are to the cap and potential room we need for Volchie.

Having said that, I'd love to see Cheechoo on the team for less. Too bad the CBA won't allow us to sign him to a new contract for 4 years at $5M total or something and throw out his current deal.

I felt so bad for the guy when he was initially creditted for a goal a few games back then they took it away. Cruel.

Anonymous said...

I like Cheechoo but he is holding them back from making any deals, because Murray is packageing him in any deal now, I would hate to lose Volchenkov over him, this is why I hate BM he should of never made this deal. I would much rather have a upset Heatley then what is going on now.

I for one, along with many here, admire Cheechoo's work ethic and agree that he's a great team player. But let's be honest here, if BM got the chance to ditch him (and his 3M) and sign a good rental at the trade deadline, I am sure he would do it.

I don't think we give him for nothing and it makes sense that he'd want to package him with Lee. I would hate to see him go but would support the move completely.

As for Lecavalier, no way the sens trade for him. Makes no sense, least of all cap wise. He's getting paid way too much and Stamkos is completely outshining him this season. We can't afford another 7M contract and I wouldn't trade Spezza for him. I can't believe people still even read Eklund's site.

Cheech has to be bought out at the end of the season. 3.5M for him is outrageous! I think they should give him till the trade deadline, give him some PP and some ice. If he still comes up empty handed ship him to Bingo, and use the free space to deal for an impact guy. Whoever said his goals are all when the game is already decided nailed it. He is worse than Bill Muckalt!

Anonymous said...

Anon (1) @10:23

What are you smoking. Again, I don't get how people like you still don't understand the Heatley situation and trade.

BM had no choice, NO CHOICE, but to trade Heatley before training camp/beginning of the season.

The only thing that would have been accomplished is the Sens would have destroyed themselves from within. They would be at the bottom of the standings. There would have been nothing but division in the dressing room and a media circus until Heatley was finally traded.

Just look at the summer time and the media circus that was created...once the season started...it would have been a 100x worse!

Ottawa missing the playoffs 2 years in a row, was not an option....and any deal Murray accepted (at any point) would have involved a garbage contract coming back to Ottawa. At the time, with the EDM deal, Penner's contract was considered just that.

Murray did what he had to do with Heatley in order to give Ottawa it's best opportunity to make the playoffs this year. Keeping Heatley even part of the season would have hampered Ottawa's chances.

Anonymous said...

I would like to see Murray get someone like Ryane Clowe or Colby Armstrong.

Truth said...

IDIOTS!!! I actually heard someone say they'd rather have heatley???? what?? While we sit comfortably in the playoffs closing in on a division title? F*** Heatley, you morons, this team is good. Murray will either sign Volchenkov, or get something awesome from washington for him. Otherwise, Whatever has to be done to keep him will be done, whether Melnyk buries Cheechoo in the minors or trades Kelly away. Stop chewing your nails.

And I see we've got the long awaited return of the murray bashers, now that we lost one game, they're back in full force. Awful quiet for the 11 games before that weren't you?

Mitchell, Murray has done a GREAT job here and will be given a three year extension sooner rather than later. Book it.

I gotta say, some of you people are crazy.
No one is going to take the Cheechoo train off our hands and packaging Lee with him just for the sake of moving the contract is foolish.
We need to keep Lee. He may have an attitude problem now but we have years to break down and rebuild him.
Cheechoo will finish the remainder of this season as a Senator. Only going into next season will BM be able to address this issue, by either burying his contract or a buyout (2 years @ 1.5 is IMHO too large a cap hit).

The truth of the matter is we don't have the defensive depth to make a deep push into the playoffs, this year anyway.

We have the Russian version of Ray Whitney already -- AK27.

As for Cheechoo, I am not too sure what teams are willing to take a chance on him. I don't want to see him bought out. That will cost us 1 mil for the next 2 seasons. I think they will put him on waivers and hopefully someone will take a chance on him. I wish him the best of luck. There is no way that we should let his contract affect the signing of Volchenkov.

Cheechoo's role can be played by Donovan, Shannon, Winchester, Ruutu, Neil, Z. Smith, Campoli, Kelly

If Cheechoo's contract were magically set to 600k cap hit, would you still keep him?
my answer: no, for the above reasons

Looking forward...

Cheechoo - As a coach, I would love to keep Cheechoo on my team as a 4th line grinder. As a GM, I would love to ship him and his 3M price tag off of my team. For the team, I think he needs to go... If you can't resign him than buying him out next year isn't a bad option, 1M against the cap over 2 years...

Volchenkov - If Volchenkov wants more than 3M than I think he needs to go. I'm sorry, but a guy that plays 60+ games, gets 20 pts is not worth more than that. I don't care that he injures 5 players/year with vicious hits and blocks the most shots on the team. We have guys like Cowen expected to make the team and Weiroch not far behind. Volchie wants a long term contract but it doesn't look like he fits into the long term plan of the Senators. He's got to go... The Senators need a PMD more than a defensive one, as their prospects should beable to 'hopefully' fill the void of Volchie.

Foligno, Regin, Winchester, Shannon - will all most likely be resigned and hopefully for cheap prices. I can't see any of those players going for more than 1.5M. Signing these 4 players and letting Cheechoo go would give us our 12 forwards for next season.

Campoli - should be resigned for cheap (1M or less) with Picard being shipped out or just let go. In keeping Campoli we will have 5 Defencemen for next season, leaving room for Cowen to make the team.

With Cheech and Volchie gone we should have enough cap space to find a reasonably priced top 4 Dman OR a top 6 forward without moving any of our pieces. However, if we want both somebody is going to have to move as we're just too close to the cap.

Overall, I think next year looks promising.

My 2 cents...

Go Sens go!!

I'm surprised that something like that doesn't come up more often.

I'm all for playi9ng arm, chair GM but the real life experience is a little different than when you on the PS3. By all means suggest trades but please grab a dose of realism before doing so.

If keeping Cheechoo - Ottawa loses chance of signing Volchy. I would not like that very much. Volchy is more important to the Sens than Cheecho. There are also some good young RFA's that Ottawa has to signing. If LA wants Cheecho trade him for a pick and save that cap space. Murray will still have to move other contracts to re-sign those players that Ottawa HAS to sign.

Cheechoo works hard but accomplishes little, and remains on the team only because of his immmovable price tag. I wish I could go to work, look busy, accomplish nothing and make more money than I can spend.

I want Cheechoo to succeed because want to minimize the shafting the team took on the Heatley trade (although I am enjoying the balance that spreading out the salaries accomplishes). But, when will Cheechoo figure out that the skate from behind the net, reverse spinerama to the forehand for a shot on the short side doesn't work?

One sweep at the hands of the eventual conference champs who then won the cup last year, and one season missing the playoffs, after which he cleaned up the entire team, patched the locker room and now has the best coach we've had in years to go along with a winning record and a tie for the division lead? Good to see your opinons are so well-founded on facts. Nope, wait, you're just another whiny anon calling for murrays head for no good reason.

Get out of here, you're either a miserable clown, or a leaf troll. Go form sensrage.com, where you and your co-haters can hang out.
