Believe It!

Lot of doubters around here before puck drop...

Where are ya now?? Absolutely dominant performance by Team Canada tonight. Russia wasn't even in this thing.

Canada now waits to see who they will face on Friday night. Probably Sweden though (EDIT: Uhhhh maybe not? Slovakia it is!).

GO CANADA GO!!!!!

All you doubters, get back on the bandwagon right now!!!!!!!

This one was for all the haters, all the non-believers. woohhooooo go canada.

I hope erik stall is okay, we're from the same town. Team canada
and not team crosby showed why they are a force to be reckoned with. Crosby was garbage yet we won in a blow-out.

Best first period in the history of all first periods. It was as good as the 3rd period vs united states in the 2002 gold medal game.

Once again, go Canada go.

That was an absolutely dominant performance by Canada. Doubters say we don't have finesse, skill etc. What do you say after that performance? Nash is coming alive and Doughty is absolutely amazing. The path to gold is set. GO CANADA GO!!!

BeJamin said...

Called it. Russians had too many KHL losers and that key injury to the third line center (KHL) guy who played on one leg got destroyed all night. Fedorov also got beat down all night long. No surprise. I thought it'd be closer but it was clear we had an edge.

Anonymous said...

how about we put all 11 teams in order and beat them all?!?!?!
Canada kicks ass!

Canadian lines clicked perfectly today. Love what this team is building...Bobby Lu needs to be better but with that much domination it is hard to complain!

Please be gentle with Alffy.

My favourite people are those folks who spew negativity, then say "I told you so" when then team loses or, "I knew it!" when they win. All those bandwagon Ovechkin fans, and those who said Russia would win, only because you didn't want to risk believing in this Canadian team...we don't need you on this bandwagon. Enjoy your vodka, your perogies, and your know-it-allness while the rest of us enjoy this ride. GO CANADA GO!!!

Yeah Glenn I agree with you. Except I didn't spew any negativity. I called it in the previous blog post saying Canada should really win citing Russia's injury situation in their forward group and that we had a 60/40 edge. See I don't post as a loser Anon so when I call something there's actually evidence :).

I have no problem admitting that I thought Russia would win this game prior to it starting.

One thing I failed to account for was the Nabokov factor. This guy is absolutely terrible when the pressure is slightly higher than it is in a regular season game in Columbus. That game's a lot closer if Bryzgalov was playing.

Further to that point, despite Canada's dominance, how bad were Heatley-Thornton-Marleau tonight? They only played about 13 minutes each, and had just 2 assists between them!

If I were a Sharks fan, I'd be preparing for an early playoff exit come April.

This is what I'm talking about when I say Canada has been playing awesome the whole tournament and people haven't been giving them credit. 2 goalies had 2 awesome games. Canada has been awesome every game and we will keep rolling along.

Great game and win by Canada. I love the passion and support for Canada after a convincing win. I wish we had Sens fans like this!!
Go Canada!!

Gold mania said...

I think there were many fans that had legitimate concerns after the US game. Canada had to step up after that game and they did to Germany but the real test was Russia and on paper Russia were favored.

What we witnessed was a team that came together and played a dominating game. What a game. I loved every minute of it!!!!!

skaught said...

Great game by Canada! They completely dominated. It almost was disappointing to watch Russia disappear. Almost.

Sens2010 said...

Complete domination. Knew it from the naming to the teams russia had big scary names on their top two lines and not much after that. Also, not any true playmakers, all snipers on Russia. Congrats to Ovie for being the dirty guy playing in front of the net in the power play. Way to take one for the team. Also, it seemed kovalchuk and malkin completely forgot about passing.(Well i guess kovalchuk is just learning that there is 5 guys on his team after playing alone in atlanta for so long.)

With that said Canda dominated. Congrats to the boys. Pronger looked half decent for once. Weber and doughty continue to be our best d-men.

Yzerman did a great job of picking this team. Perfect mix of speed, skill, physicality, and role players. No backchecking on russia.

And Volchenkov did not look like the same guy that shut down Ovie a couple weeks ago. He got burned for goals a couple times.

Go Canada Go

I'm still having a tough time cheering for a team with Crosby, Heatley and Pronger. I love Canada and cheering hard for all other sports, just dont have the same motivation for the hockey this time around. I think we need a Canadian Superstar on the Sens, that would definitley motivate me

Canada's D is a beast. Who would have thought coming into this olympics that we would be seeing such awesome performances by all our young D. Weber was awesome. Keith was awesome. Doughty is our MVP so far. Being in Ottawa we never get to see this kid and I can't believe how good him and Weber are.

Great game for sure, and absolutely dominating first period. Just to be a realist though, don't get too high and don't get too low. Canada has to be prepared to face a top-flight goaltender, which Nabokov wasn't tonight (Miller was the other night though...). I agree with TSN commentary that the Russian coach was a fool not to pull Nab after the 1st. If he does, no way we score 5 and 6 and the game is a heck of a lot closer. Canada has to keep up the pressure and intensity but we still have to see them fight for those dirty goals in front of Miller and Lundqvist. Was nice to see a few screens and hard work goals tonight. Still a long way to go boys - don't let up!!! GO CANADA!!!!!!

Cheers, LVS

BeJamin said...

LOL WE WANT.. SLOVAKIA?

Roflmao. Sweden fail big time. Canada walks to the Gold Medal Game. I also happen to think the Fins will upset the Americans because the Americans suck balls and barely even beat the Swiss. Would be nice to beat them up for Gold again though.

Anonymous said...

Bejamin we barely beat the Swiss so how does that mean they suck balls?

Anonymous said...

Barely even beat the Swiss eh, BeJamin? Like the game Canada played agaisnt them?

Russia made the wrong choice of starting goalie, and Canada exposed that and a weak defence.

This was the best team game they played all tournament, so all the 'I knew it' calls are pretty weak. Canada's record against Russia/CCCP at the Olympics 1-9. I guess some people never learned that there is such thing as humility and class in a winning effort.

"A Canadian Tsunami"

Team Canada displays its best- passion, heart, hunger, will- in
wiping out Russia !!

To me , it was a great and relentless attack, on the whole Russian team, with 4 goals on 23 shots, in first 24 minutes of the
the game. Russia just felt stunned and literally died a slow death !

Now we face Slovakia, who upset Sweden, and this is not an easy challenge but another huge game !

GO CANADA GO !!!!!!!!!

Its not so much doubters, as it is realists. Im very glad Canada won, but as a HOCKEY fan, I wasnt too confident, but as a Canada fan, I knew we would blow'em out of the water..

Everyone who had been watching the Canada games before they played Russia were just as worried as the rest of us! Just because some people didnt believe Canada could win that game, doesnt mean we were cheering against them..

Anyways, Canada plays Slovakia in the semi's, and hopefully the USA in the finals.. Lets get this damn tournmanet done with so we can have our SENS back!

Chris K: you can go return your ovechkin jersey, wew all know you're a closet russia fan. "Blind Faith"? Get a clue.

"Objective" people could see that canada had a major edge at: forward, defence, goaltending and coaching prior to the game. We're also bigger, stronger, faster, more skilled and more determined.

In short we're better in literally everyway. That's why we absolutely humiliated them, why we walked up and slapped them in the face, and they fell down on their knees crying for mommy. Then we kicked them onto the ground and proceeded to walk all over them.

Canada 7 Slovakia 0

I'm flabbergasted some of you are still complaining after one of the most one-sided games in history. Must suck being you guys.

I have to agree with the guy who predicted a Canada-Finland final.

The US beat Switzerland on a garbage goal that didn't even go in.

The Swiss would've taken that game to over-time had the goal been reviewed properly. They suffocated the States with their brand of tight defensive hockey and some great goaltending.

Well Finland is even better defensively and has an even better goaltender.

Watching the Fins beat the Czechs last night, I realized, I've never seen a goalie capable of making a highlight reel save like Kipper. Guys like Brodeur, Luongo and Miller excel with superior positioning, they make the saves look easy. Kipper just stops the puck, especially in the big moments.

So I predict now Canada Gold, Finland Silver, Slovakia Bronze. While they won't beat Canada, I can see the Slovaks doing to the US what they did to the Swedes.

Anonymous 9:16. At Ctvolympics.ca you can replay all games... you just have to watch them on the computer.

For all the Babcock bashing that was going on this guy has pulled a Clouston and is making players earn their ice time. From Game 1, Iginla relegated to 4th line, Pronger is seeing less ice time, Brodeur bench. He's pretty much telling the team who is playing the best will play. It probably plays a part why players have picked up their play, they can all see if they don't they will be sitting on the bench.

Teebs said...

I didn't see this mentioned amongst all the arguing, but how about that first period by Dan Boyle? He stepped up in a big way, especially on his feed to Getzlaf.

Glad to see a lot of 'slow-starting' Canadian players shine in this one (Perry, Boyle, Getzlaf to an extent). Canada's depth/effort is really becoming evident... and will be crucial in picking apart Slovakia and getting pucks past Halak.

Teebs

Andre said...

Rick Nash is unreal. Anyway, anybody else pissed off that getzlaf was taking liberties with volchenkov after he out-muscled staal to the puck in the corner? I don't know about you guys but the what matters most to me about this tournament is that no sens players get hurt - so we don't get screwed like in 2006.

I keep hoping somebody will obliterate getzlaf, perry, HEATLEY or pronger with a check and put them out for the tournament and maybe the rest of the nhl season.

Well, we can be happy that alfie, volchenkov, michalek and kuba made it through unscathed plus they get a short break.

steve said...

does slovakia have a decent goalie?

Harry Pubes said...

Well, I think its safe to say. Team Canada has arrived.

I am the guy that has been ripping Babcock alot. It was great to see him just put the lines on the ice. The Nash, Richards, Toews line killed it.
As did Staal, Crosby, Iggy again.

I gotta wonder though. Those two lines were lines Babcock never put together when he was tossing lines around like a manic in the first two games. They were created in between the games and then he just stuck with them. It really feels like Stevie Y and Ten Inchcock stepped in to some degree. Babcock's coaching style has went from retard to extremely simple and conservative.

What a game though.

Semin lays his first him of the game with 3 minutes left and its a little bit late. So Boyle Slew Foots the Shit out of him! That was the cherry on top.

Can't take the Slovaks for granted.

and i Agree Lu can be better. He was so good on the one on ones. I guess I was just expecting a Shutout once the game got going. Still I think Lu has his bigger saves to come.

SensChirp said...

Steve,

They sure do. Jaroslav Halak.

Like any goalie though, get pucks on net and traffic in front and we'll be ok.

Allan said...

I don't quite get how saying that you think a team you support will lose makes you a hater. In fact hater seems to be a solely North American term for a sports fan.

There is nothing wrong with mixing in your sporting support with a dose of realism every once in a while.

What I find surprising is how, as a community, we think the Sens/Canada are the greatest team in the world if they win a game and the worst team in the world if the lose one. It's like everyone here is sporting bi-polar. Great high and lows are what makes supporting a team so much fun but seriously there must be a lot of people here with high blood pressure or ulcers because of what you appear to put yourselves through on a regular basis.

It's OK to think the team you support might lose a big game, it doesn't make you any less of a fan and it doesn't mean that you want your team to lose.

Another thing I don't get is saying that you want your team to win but only if a certain player plays badly or gets hurt, whether that player is Crosby or Nash or Heatley or whoever. The whole point it that you support the team - you know the crest on the front, not the name on the back.

If I was a Canadian and wanted my team to win gold I couldn't give a shit who scored the winning goal or whether it was a glorious shot from the point or a huge scramble in front of the net that takes 5 deflections before trickling over the line.

Get behind Canada or don't, it makes no difference to me because I'm not Canadian and I don't have a vested interest in the hockey because the country I come from play hockey - but not so you'd notice (for the record I'd like Canada to win gold because I live here but don't really care if they do or not) but slamming somebody for having a different opinion to you seems a little insane. Sometimes however it's not what you say but how you say it.

The olympics has been fun but I'm much more interested in the NHL and my beloved Sens.

Long time reader 1st time poster....i'm a huge sens fan from Montreal...I have to say what I am most happy about is that no sens player has gotten injured at the games...also, I will admit I didn't think that Canada would dominate russia like that, but with the swede's gone...I think the gold is Canada's....

BeJamin said...

Anon 4:59AM. Canada barely beat the Swiss in their 2nd game of the tournament. A game where they played awfully and looked completely disorganized. The Americans barely beat them in the quarterfinal with the best effort they can muster. Not to mention the Swiss played the night before. I'm sorry but if you're barely beating the Swiss in a quarterfinal where they played the night before with a roster full of NHL players that definetely means you suck balls :).

Clayton said...

So what a game... I pvr'd and dodged pepople all night at work and wow was it every worth the effort.

A couple of things I've noticed the past few games... How old is Niedermayer? He's playing like a man possessed out there, jumping into the rush and really digging it out in the offensive zone, just amazing to see the Cap work his butt off.

Drew Doughty...I'm gonna admit I'm starting to get a man crush on this kid, he's just unreal!! I wish the sens could pull a blockbuster to get him out of LA cause he needs more exposure besides the California sun.

4 lines of awesome!! There were a lot of haters who were jumping all over Morrow. The guy has a ton of skill and plays like Sean Avery minus the mouth which is the perfect kind of pest anyone could ever want. Towes is showing his dominance in a quiet manner and its impressive. As good as this team is now, I can't help but look forward to the Worlds and the next Olympics as the youth movement in Canada is really in full swing and they are really showing their mettle.

Extremely excited for the semi finals against the Slovaks but we can't take them lightly. I remember Halak playing out of his skin when the Habs were in Ottawa a month or so ago. We gotta keep the relentless pressure up and don't give any team a chance to even breathe out there. Keep bringing the fourth line to bang and wear their opponents down. Our fourth line is good enough to match up againts any other countries first line.

Let's be honest Nabokov - was absolutely terrible. Who was that guy???

Anonymous said...

I thought the game would be a lot closer than it was.
I thought Nabocov would not play well under pressure -- he proved me right.
I guess those KHL players did not fair out so well against the NHL players.
Team Canada defense is amazing with those young guys back there.. Doughty, Weber, Seabrook, Keith... Pronger & Niedermeyer were okay but those young guys are really showing up.
I don't believe there is a team left that will beat Canada.
The US had it tough against the Swiss... The refs in the 3rd did not call a hit from behind on the Americans nor a trip behind the net in the final 2 min of the game. The Swiss should have had a 6 on 4 and maybe tied up the game. The US got lucky. Finland will be a tougher opponent.. all NHL players which the Swiss did not have too many of.
As for the Slovaks -- do to Hossa what Canada did to Ovie and that should about do it. Not too worried about Halak -- nor Chara.. Chara can't handle speed.
Let's go for gold
