Afinogenov Extremely Unlikely

(UPDATE- 11:50 PM)- As you all know by now (thanks to all of you who posted it in the comments section!) the Edmonton Oilers have officially declared themselves out of the running for Dany Heatley. I'll have more on this tomorrow morning and exactly what it means for the future of Dany Heatley.

Until then...

(UPDATE- 12:34 PM)- Not that anyone expected him to return but former Senators defenceman Brendan Bell has landed in St. Louis. He signed a one year deal today with the Blues. All the best to Brendan in St. Louis.

Just a quick post on what has been a slow couple of days when it comes to the Ottawa Senators. There isn't much out there right now but I do have a couple bits of information to pass along this morning.

A few people have been emailing me asking about the Senators interest in Maxim Afinogenov over the last couple days.

I had a chance to speak to someone early this morning who told me the Senators interest in the speedy Russian is extremely limited and given the lack of a resolution on the Heatley front is non-existent.

While this could change depending on the return in a Heatley deal, right now it looks as though the Senators wont be making any kind of a pitch for Afinogenov.

I was also told to keep an eye on the Sharks over the next 72 hours. It looks like they could be getting close to clearing some cap space with the intention of adding an impact forward. There is some speculation out there that it could be Kessel but I'm not entirely sold on that.

I'll post updates if anything new comes up.

Wednesday Update..Sort of

(UPDATE 2:03 PM)- The Binghamton Senators have announced the signing of a couple of players. Derek Smith and Jeremy Yablonski have both signed one year deals. Thanks to the reader who posted this in the comment section.

Just a day after posting a rumour that involved three teams and San Jose Sharks Captain Patrick Marleau, I am now being told that it is very unlikely the Marleau would waive his NTC to go to Montreal or Ottawa for that matter.

If the Sharks are going to be serious players in the Dany Heatley sweepstakes they are going to have to move some big money and Patrick Marleau looks like a prime candidate. However, like Heatley in Ottawa, Marleau would have to approve any deal and his is apparently not too keen on leaving San Jose.

The Sharks would apparently also consider moving Christian Ehrhoff or Jonathan Cheechoo as a way to create the necessary cap space. Unless the three way deal mentioned yesterday comes to fruition we would likely see one or two trades prior to the Sharks making a move for Heatley.

At this point its either San Jose makes cap space and steps up or Heatley is forced to accept the deal to Edmonton. While both sides will tell you their is still a chance Dany comes back to Ottawa I really cant see that happening.

In other news, people continue to ask about the situation with Brian Elliott. I've been told there is a deal in place and that both sides are waiting to make it official. Its believed the Senators current cap situation and the ongoing Heatley situation are the reasons this thing is being held up. This deal will get done before camp.

Rumoured Three Team Deal

All kinds of whacky rumours when it comes to possible Heatley outcomes so its pretty tricky to tell which are legit. I had a rumour sent in to me last night that says a three team deal could be nearing completion and it involves the Ottawa Senators, the San Jose Sharks and the Montreal Canadiens.

The deal would apparently see Patrick Marleau end up in Montreal, Dany Heatley get his wish and end up in California while the Senators would get a package that involved Tomas Plekanec and Milan Michalek.

Plekanec saw time with Kovalev last season and could be a nice fit on the second line. Michalek is a solid young player under contract for the next five years at a cap hit of $4.33 mil a season.

This absolutely 100%, nothing more than a rumour at this point but I wanted to give you an idea of the sort of things that are coming in at this point.

A piece of real news coming out of Minnesota today where it will be annnounced that former Senators Director of Player Operation Brent Flahr has taken the Assistant GM job with the Wild. This had been rumoured a month or so ago but was denied at the time. The Wild are expected to make it official as soon as today.

The Heatley Saga- Senators Point of View

I know a lot of you are tired of reading about this guy and to be honest I'm getting a little tired of writing about him. But lets face facts. Until this Heatley situation reaches some sort of resolution this will continue to be the most significant story relating to our beloved Senators.

We can sit here and discuss the possibility of guys like Mike Comrie, PJ Axelsson (Just signed in Sweden) or Maxim Afinogenov joining the squad but until we know what happens with Dany, Murray can not realistically be expected to sign anymore free agents.

In public the Senators are saying all the right things. From the management to the players, the organization has to give off the impression that they are prepared to bring Heatley back this coming season despite his desires to leave the city. And perhaps somewhere in the back of their minds they're actually considering having the two time 50 goal scorer in the line up this season

But make no mistake; the Ottawa Senators number one priority is to deal Dany Heatley. The moment Dany asked for a trade out of town, the focus of Bryan Murray and of owner Eugene Melnyk has been to send Dany packing.

With that said, Bryan Murray is not going to get bullied on this deal. He was put in a tough position when the Heatley trade request went public and now hes desperately trying to make the best of a bad situation.

Murray has let the interested parties know the asking price and refuses to budge from that standard.

So is it possible Dany Heatley will still be a member of the Ottawa Senators by the time training camp kicks off in September? Sure it is. But it certainly wont be for a lack of trying on the Senators part. They want to move Dany Heatley. Now its time for an interested team to step up and give Murray what he wants.

My instinct still says the Sharks find a way to make a deal for Heatley.

The clock is ticking...

Weekend Update

Just thought I would make a quick Sunday morning post on what has been a pretty quiet weekend in Ottawa.

Jason Spezza's wedding took place yesterday afternoon. The media was there; Dany was not. The ceremony saw the return of a few ex-Senators including Brian McGrattan Ray Emery and Antoine Vermette. Here are a couple of articles from Ottawa Sun writer Bruce Garrioch; one on the ceremony and one directed to Heatley himself.

Other than that not much going on with the Senators this weekend. One rumour that has been making the rounds though is the Senators looking at Maxim Afinogenov as a possible free agent target. While I've read the rumours I have yet to hear anything substantial on this front.

I'm sure Murray would love to add the skill that Max brings its just not feasible given the Senators current cap situation

Heatley Not Going to the Wedding

Its old news by now (reported by Brent Wallace first I believe) but in case you haven't heard, Dany Heatley will not be attending the wedding of apparent close friend and teammate Jason Spezza this weekend in Ottawa.

People have been speculating over the course of the week that Heatley would speak publicly prior to this weekend so as to take the attention away from himself and not in anyway diminish this extremely significant event in Jason's life.

I'm not sure how much say Jason had in this decision but this seems to me like another reason why Heatley can not return to Ottawa this season. Perhaps this decision is for the best though as it avoids any potential media circus in Ottawa this weekend.

If the bridge hasn't been completely burnt its pretty damn close.

Lauer Named Assistant Coach

(UPDATE- 1:30 PM)- Just got a bit of an update on Brian Elliott. While nothing has been signed yet I was told getting him under contract shouldn't be a problem. The Senators have him budgeted in at this point and are likely just waiting to clear some money out before making the deal official.

(UPDATE- 12:39 PM)- Thanks to the reader who sent this in. Here is a link to an article from the Edmonton Journal that says its time for the Oil to give up on Dany. Definitely worth a read. Meanwhile speculation continues to build that we will hear from Heatley today or tomorrow. I'm not holding my breath.

The Ottawa Senators have filled a void on their coaching staff, adding Brad Lauer as an assistant to Cory Clouston.

Lauer, an ex-Senator, has worked with Clouston before when the two were together with the Kootenay Ice of the Western Hockey League. Lauer joins assistant coach Greg Carvel, goaltending coach Eli Wilson and video coach Tim Pattyson. Luke Richardson will remain in the organization as a part-time coach.

Mailbag Answers

-Hi Senschirp, Eklund is reporting that the Senators are interested in signing defensemen Derek Morris. Are you hearing the same thing? Thank you Marcel

Like the rest of you I can’t help but visit Eklund’s site. He gets a bad rap at times but the guy really does work very hard. I personally haven’t heard anything about the Senators looking at Derek Morris and until some bodies are cleared out on the back end I don’t see how the Senators could make a serious play for a defenceman who made $3.95 mil last year.

-Any interesting prospects news? If Karlsson doesn’t make the big club do you think he’ll play for Bingo or return to Sweden? Blair

Unfortunately I wasn’t able to make it out for any of the Development Camp this year. I have had a chance to speak with a few people though and by the sounds of things Karlsson was quite impressive. The Senators fully expect him to challenge for the 5th or 6th defenceman position this season and help out on the PP. If Erik cant crack the big club the Senators would like him to stay and play the year in Bingo although there is no indication on if Karlsson is sold on that idea. The other guy that really impressed this year is Rob Lehner. He looks like a very solid pick and one of the better goaltending prospects the Senators have ever had.

For more information on the Development Camp check out Inside Hockey.

-I've mentioned this a few times in the comments section, but I was hoping you might have any info on Anton Volchenkov and whether Brian Murray has him in the Senators future plans or not? Jon M.

Thanks for the question Jon. Volchenkov is set to be a UFA this coming summer and would likely be a hot commodity should he hit the open market. That said, the Senators organization absolutely loves this guy and will certainly be looking to get him under contract before the July 1 deadline. I expect this will be an ongoing discussion over the course of the season and while it may be too early to tell, I expect A-Train to stay with the Senators.

-Do you have any updates on the rumors/future of Smith, Kelly, and Picard? I hear that those names are being shopped around to help us drop back below the cap. ~Dan from Ottawa

Other than Heatley, these are the names that come up the most often in the Senators rumour mill and for good reason. The recent rise of Zack Smith has a lot to do with the thought that Kelly might be expendable. That said, Kelly has a lot of fans in this city and more importantly in the Senators organization. His contract isn’t horrible so I think he sticks around. When it comes to Jason Smith it really all depends on the condition of his injured knee. If he does start the year on the long term IR, the Senators would be off the hook for his salary. His name has also come up as a potential throw in to the Heatley to Edmonton deal. Picard is another name that comes up frequently but Bryan Murray actually likes Picard and while he takes quite a bit of heat from Sens fans, I like him too. Although in the salary cap world all three of these guys could potentially be on the way out.

-Just wondering if you've heard anything out of Vancouver. A neighbour of mine, knows someone who works for the Canucks organization, and apparently they are the team that offered the insulting offer. However, he also told him that at some point they are willing to offer Burrows, Kesler and Schneider. Pasquale

Vancouver has been pretty silent when it comes to Heatley. The thinking was if they didn’t sign the Sedin’s then they would make a pitch for Heatley. That would be a heck of a package coming from Vancouver but I’m not convinced they are one of the potential suitors for Dany at this point. When it comes to the ‘insulting’ offer mentioned by Murray earlier this month I had actually heard that came from Los Angeles. The Kings have played a strange role in this Heatley saga from the get go but seem to be finally out of the picture.

Sorry I couldn't post all the questions but thanks to all of you who took the time to send questions in.

73 days till hockey starts again!

Kovalev Meets the Media and Other Notes

The Senators newest sniper Alex Kovalev met with the media for the first time today in Ottawa.

He told the media in Ottawa today that "My first priority was to sign here and try to play as long as I can," he said. "I'd love to play 'til I'm 50, or as long as my body holds out."

On Heatley, Kovalev added "It's up to you guys," Kovalev said. "If you make it more comfortable for him, I'm sure he'd have no problem to stay. This year is going to be important and his help is needed."

http://www.ottawasun.com/sports/hockey/2009/07/21/10207756.html

A quick note on veteran defenceman Jason Smith. People continue to speculate that Smith will start the season on the long term IR but no one I have asked can 100% confirm this as this point. The belief is that Smith hasn't actually made the decision yet and is still hoping to play this season. That said, his knee injury late last season was apparently quite serious and has left his status for this season in question. Gator is slated to earn $2.6 million in 2009/2010.

Still nothing new on Mike Comrie either. The Senators were looking at Comrie as an option earlier this summer but the signing of Kovalev likely makes that impossible at this point. Comrie could become an option later this off season if Heatley is off the books and some space is made but for now anyway, the Senators cant afford to bring him back.

Some of you may be sick of hearing about but here's an article from the Ottawa Citizen that discusses the possibility of Heatley ending up in a Sharks jersey. San Jose would absolutely need to move some money out in any deal but there are definitely interested in Dany's services.

I know many of you have been asking about it so I thought I would clear something up. The much talked about Spezza wedding is this coming weekend, Saturday I believe. The thinking is that Heatley will make a statement at some point this week to avoid any kind of media circus that may take away from what should be a special day.

Lastly, kudos to Ian Mendes for a well thought out piece that urges local media to stay away from the Spezza wedding this weekend. Heatley will speak when hes ready and to compromise an important day for a loyal Senator would be truly unfortunate. Lets hope the rest of the media type in Ottawa share Ian's point of view.

SensChirp Mailbag

Pretty ho-hum Monday thus far.

While there is no real news on the Heatley front, some are speculating that there could be some sort of development this week, be it a trade or at least some sort of statement from the Heatley camp.

Edmonton remains the top suitor for Heatley and unless San Jose can make some moves to clear cap space, the Oil may be the only legitimate player. The Sharks are interested but until they can move some money out they can't become serious players.

On the off chance that Mr. Heatley or one of his agents is reading this I would like to volunteer SensChirp as a forum for your first official statement and interview which is bound to come this week.

Other than that it seems like a pretty quiet Monday in mid July. With Senators fans eagerly awaiting some sort of break in the Dany Heatley saga, its becoming pretty obvious that we need to find new ways to entertain ourselves.

We tried this once a few months ago and got a pretty good response so lets give it another shot.

It's time for the second edition of the SensChirp Mailbag.

Send your Senators or SensChirp related questions/comments/feedback to sensrumours@hotmail.com. I'll do my best to get to as many as I can and post some of the questions and answers later this week.

Friday Rant

(UPDATE 12:22 PM)- Heatley speaks! Well sort of. Thanks to the reader who sent this in.

http://www.kelownadailycourier.ca/stories.php?id=199318

Considering its the middle of July I guess we should be thankful there is anything in the way of Senators news. With that said, this Dany Heatley thing has dragged on just about enough for me.

Its time for Heatley and his representation to realize that this prolonged silence is helping nobody and that at this point he needs to come out and tell his side of the story. JP Barry is one of the most respected agents in the business from what I hear but his tendency to use the staling tactic to get his clients what they want is becoming tiresome.

I can't say for certain that a change in representation is the right thing for Heatley at this point but its pretty clear that his current agents are doing very little to help Heatley's image at a pivotal point in his career.

Granted its possible his agents have advised him to make a statement and he just refused. No body really knows at this point.

For those of you who didn't catch it, Ray Emery was on Off the Record yesterday and said that he hopes Heatley stays in Ottawa and is pretty sure that's what Dany wants too. I realize Ray may not be in the loop on all this but its interesting to hear the point of view of a former teammate and friend.

Rumours surrounding this whole Heatley situation are coming in almost constantly so its pretty hard to separate the fact from fiction at times. With that said, it was mentioned to me yesterday that Eugene Melnyk is furious about all this (not surprising) and if the right deal is there, he wants it done immediately.

So far, the right deal is obviously not there...

Bingo Coach to be Announced Friday

(UPDATE 10:24 AM)- The Binghamton Senators have announced Don Nachbaur as their new head coach. Nachbaur has spent the last 6 seasons with the Tri City Americans.

Kudos to Bingo blogger Michael Sharp for this scoop. The Binghamton Senators will announce their new coach at a press conference Friday at 10:00 AM. There are a lot of names being kicked around at this point, one of which is ex-Senator Brad Shaw.

From the same blog the word is the AHL affiliate has also inked two players, one of which is expected to be former NHL goaltender Andy Chiodo. No word on who the other guy might be just yet.

Its not much but any Senators related news is good at this point.

Changing the Subject

They say a watched pot will never boil so perhaps if we leave this Dany Heatley situation for a day there will be some kind of development over the course of the day.

While the Heatley saga has grabbed the headlines in Ottawa there are other issues that will need to be addressed before the 2009/2010 season.

With contracts like Jason Smith, Christoph Schubert, Alex Picard and Chris Kelly all seemingly expendable, Bryan Murray will have some tinkering to do before the season starts. Theres still no official word on the status of Jason Smith but the thinking is he may start the season on the long term IR.

When it comes to Picard and Schubert there really doesn't appear to be much of a market. Schubert still has his supporters in the Ottawa organization and its possible he could be given one last shot although the log jam on the Senators blue line heading into this season he could be in tough when it comes to cracking the big club.

A couple weeks back there was word that Mike Comrie was mulling over a few offers and that the Senators were one of them. With the Kovalev signing its hard to see how Murray could fit Comrie's contract in, particularly with Dany Heatley still on the books.

I continue to hear Brian Elliott will be under contract 'soon' but to this point nothing is official. I'm actually surprised it has taken this long to get something done. With Auld out of the picture Elliott is the clear number two this season and will be an important player for the Senators this season.

The people over at Hockey Future's have done a review on the Senators performance at the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. Worth a read... Also, the guys over at On the Forecheck have put together an interesting look at how much each team travels over the course of the season. Check it out here.

Lastly, an article in the Ottawa Sun says that the city of Ottawa is in the running to host the 2012 All Star Game. Seems overdue to me.

Can Dany Really Come Back?

(UPDATE 3:54 PM)- The NHL has released the schedule for the 2009/2010 season. Here is the link to the Senators schedule.

http://www.nhl.com/ice/schedulebyseason.htm?team=ott

So the apparent deadline from the Edmonton Oilers has come and gone and Dany Heatley is still a member of the Ottawa Senators.

All the talk today seems to indicate that the Senators really are preparing to have Heatley in their line up this coming season.

I'm still not convinced this isn't just posturing on the part of the Senators. The organization has to appear as though they are prepared to bring Heatley back if they want to get the deal they're looking for. This may drag on longer than we were all hoping for but I really do feel like in the end a team will step up and offer Murray something he likes.

With that said, all the chatter today has become focused on Dany Heatley returning to the Senators line up this season. Seems to me its about time Heatley comes out and addresses the fans in this city. The longer he remains silent the harder it is for him to come back and pull on the Senators uniform again.

Would you welcome Dany Heatley back?

Also, the NHL will release the schedule for the 2009/2010 regular season today at 3:00 PM. I will post a link to the Senators schedule as soon as it becomes available.

Oilers Ready to Pull Out?

(UPDATE- 3:22 PM)- What I thought would be a busy day has been strangely quiet. Nothing new from the Heatley camp at this point and Ottawa remains quiet on other potential suitors. I did receive word that it may be pretty much impossible for the Sharks to get involved in any Heatley trade. I wouldn't rule them out completely but they would need to make a few moves to make the cap space required to add Heatley's contract. Sigh

(UPDATE-10:34 AM)- Daniel Alfredsson speaks on the Heatley situation for the first time. The article can be found here.

As reported by the Ottawa Sun and Chis Stevenson this morning, the word is the Oilers may have set today as their day for Heatley to make a decision on a move to Edmonton.

While Heatley rejected the deal back on June 30th he has not officially ruled out a move to Edmonton. The Oilers are getting tired of waiting around and want to know their direction as soon as possible.

Today could be a big day in this process as Heatley will be faced with the decision to either accept the move to Edmonton or risk being forced into a return to Ottawa this coming season. While there are other teams at least partially interested in Heatley, the Oilers are the only team that have gone as far as to make an official offer.

What it gonna be Dany? Take the sure thing in Edmonton or roll the dice and hope another offer comes in?

How badly do you not want to play for the Ottawa Senators?

Monday, July 13, 2009

Quick Monday Update

Its been a pretty hectic last week or so for me but things are slowing down now so I'll be able to get back to digging up the latest information

That said, its been a pretty slow news day to start the week.

Things remain quiet on the Heatley front. While I continue to hear that teams have interest, no team other than the Oilers has tabled an official offer thus far. The Oilers offer remains on the table but there hasnt been any indication that Heatley has changed his mind on a move to Edmonton.

Dany wants to go to California but with the Kings seemingly out of the running and the Sharks looking for cap space, the Heatley camp will have to be patient if thats what they want.

This really is turning into an excruciating waiting game, as all of those involved wait for the other to blink. Like someone pointed out in the comment section, Jason Spezza is apparently getting married this weekend so it should be interesting to see if Heatley returns to the Ottawa area over the course of the next week.

I keep reading in other locations that the Senators have interest in forward PJ Axelsson but thus far I've yet to hear anything concrete on this front.

That's all for now. Hopefully to have more tomorrow.

Just under three months till the season gets going again!

The Saga Continues

On June 9 the news became public that Dany Heatley asked to be traded from the Ottawa Senators.

In the wee hours of June 30th, Dany Heatley was traded from the Ottawa Senators.

It is now July 11 and Dany Heatley is still an Ottawa Senator. Could he actually be in training camp with the Senators this coming fall? With each passing day, as this painful saga drags on, that scenario becomes more and more likely.

The facts are what they are at this point. The Edmonton Oilers are the only team that has tabled an official offer to acquire Dany's services. They remain the most interested party with 3 or 4 other teams (Sharks, Avalanche, Wild and maybe Columbus) all kind of waiting in the weeds. Besides the Oilers there really haven't been any concrete trade talks regarding the two time 50 goal scorer.

The Senators organization is in a position where all they can do is wait. Unless another team steps up, they can either wait for Dany Heatley to agree to a trade to Edmonton or else be prepared to have Heatley in camp this September.

The fact that Dany Heatley has remained silent this long really makes me think he and his agents have spoken with a team, with permission from Bryan Murray, and have been told there is a definite interest. Perhaps this unnamed team is waiting it out a little bit in hopes that Murray might become a little more desperate as the season approaches.

A word of advice to any GM who thinks he's going to wait Bryan Murray out; don't bother. The Ottawa Senators organization is 100% prepared to bring Heatley back next season if they don't get the deal they want.

I really get the sense that those teams waiting in the weeds will eventually start putting together packages for Dany Heatley. To this point the Oilers are the only team to do so but I really think other GM's will start to step up once they realize the asking price isn't going to change.

Love him or hate him, Dany Heatley is an elite player in this league. Teams looking for a shake up and a star player who can put the puck in the net will see what really is a rare opportunity to add a 50 goal scorer to your line up.

My prediction; Dany Heatley is a member of the San Jose Sharks by the time training camp roles around.

How do you think it will end?

Thursday, July 9, 2009

Slow Day

Pretty slow day thus far in Senators land. In the past few days we have been spoiled with a major signing and a minor trade but today has actually been pretty quiet thus far.

The Dany Heatley situation continues to drag on with no real resolution in sight. I still don't think there's anyway Heatley is in a Senators jersey this fall but there isn't much to report in the way of tangible trade talks just yet.

The Oilers, Sharks and Avalanche continue to be the most interested parties but each is facing an obstacle of sorts preventing them from making the move. The Oilers are at a disadvantage because thus far Dany has show little to no interest in playing there. The Sharks are being slowed by some pretty significant cap space issues and the Colorado Avalanche have yet to decide what direction they want to take in the wake of the Ryan Smyth trade and the Joe Sakic retirement.

The Jackets look like they could join the fray but to this point their GM as vehemently denied any interest in the services if Dany Heatley.

The discouraging news is that thus far, I am told the Senators have not engaged in any 'serious' trade talks for Dany Heatley. Other than the very public talks with the Oilers it has mostly been a case of kicking tires and setting the asking price.

While the Heatley dilemma continues to grab the headlines in the Nation's Capital there are other issues that will need to be addressed before the 2009/2010 season. Back up goaltender Brian Elliott is close to a contract at this point and getting him inked shouldn't be a problem.

It should come as no surprise that the Senators are looking to rid themselves of contracts like Jason Smith, Chris Kelly and Christoph Schubert but have yet to find a way to do so thus far. If Dany Heatley is eventually moved you can be sure Murray would look to include one of these contracts in the swap.

Auld to Dallas

(UPDATE 3:53 PM)- Just working on the details of this one but it seems like it will be just a draft pick (6th Rounder) coming back Ottawa's way. Clears the way for an Leclaire/Elliott tandem this season.

Kudos to the guys over at GM Hockey and HFBoards for sniffing this one out a while before it became official. Well done fellas.

AK27 and Heatley Rumours

Just over 24 hours have passed since Bryan Murray pulled a rabbit out of his by the name of Alex Kovalev. While the price was by no means a bargain, this really is a great signing by Murray.

Kovalev may not put up the same points as Dany Heatley but is certainly capable of putting up between 30-40 goals this season, especially if he plays with Jason Spezza. The former Hab gives the Senators some instant secondary scoring and a veteran presence that should be a nice addition to the Senators locker room.

There are some concerns about his past but I really think Kovalev comes to Ottawa with a lot to prove. When he is on, there are few players as skilled and as dominant as Alex Kovalev. Signing within the division is a definite indication that he is not worried about the spotlight and may actually be looking to stick it to his former team a little bit. Certainly adds some spice to this season's Ottawa/Montreal matchups.

As far as Heatley goes, the rumours continue to swirl. Almost as soon as the Kovalev signing became public, the Heatley speculation went into overdrive. Word is the Oilers are pushing as hard as ever and have been joined in their pursuit by the Sharks, Avalanche and most recently the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Jackets brass have denied an interest in Dany but that really just seems like posturing on their end. They would love to team up Heatley and Nash this season and have the young skilled players to get a deal done with Ottawa. Still just in the rumour stage but this is definitely something to keep an eye on.

Lastly, I wanted to thank all of you for your kind words in the comment section yesterday. This site takes some flack at times so it was nice to finally be rewarded for the surprisingly hard work that goes into running SensChirp.

Thank you readers!

Senators Sign Kovalev

(UPDATE- 10:08 PM)- Just got in from softball and my phone and email inbox were flooded with rumours of Heatley to Columbus. Cant get absolute confirmation on this but there definitely seems to be some legs. I would think the issue again will be whether or not Dany will waive.

(UPDATE- 4:32 PM)- Just got in from the trip home from work. It is indeed a two year deal worth $10 million.

The Ottawa Senators have jumped into the free agency market and signed former Hab Alexei Kovalev!

2 year deal

How about that Senator fans????

Weekend Wrap Up

Things seem to be in a cooling off period of sorts when it comes to the Dany Heatley situation. The Senators organization is saying all the right things in public and saying that as of now, they expect Heatley to be in the Senators line up this coming season.

Its one thing to say that but does anyone actually believe this is a legitimate possibility. There is now way the team can allow Heatley to come back at this point. The bridge has been burnt in my opinion.

Few different rumours seem to be making the rounds today when it comes to potential suitors for the disgruntled winger. The Oilers continue to be the most aggressive team in their pursuit and are apparently being joined by the San Jose Sharks and Colorado Avalanche. The Avs recently sent a big contract in Ryan Smyth packing and could be gearing up for a run at Heatley.

The good news for Senators fans and GM Bryan Murray is that the list seems to be growing rather than dwindling away.

I read a rumour earlier today that indicated Heatley had contacted the Oilers and said that now that he has received his $4 mil from the Senators he would consider a trade to the Oilers. Hoping to find out more on this possibility tomorrow.

In other Senators related news, Mike Comrie is apparently mulling over a few different offers right now, one of which has come from the Ottawa Senators. The belief is that he will get somewhere between $2.0-2.5 million next season.

Smyth to Kings

Just got in this evening to see that the LA Kings have picked up left winger Ryan Smyth in a deal with the Colorado Avalanche.

I guess this means I can officially get off the Heatley to the Kings bandwagon. I had some very good sources telling me that the Kings were very much interested in Heatley but I think its safe to say this put an end to this possibility.

If nothing else this proves that the Kings were interested in a scoring left winger but in the end decided Heatley was not the answer for them.

That said, the Sharks rumour from earlier is beginning to pick up some steam. Word is Dany Heatley would absolutely accept a trade to San Jose. Now its a matter of the Sharks putting together a good enough offer.

Enjoy the weekend everyone...

The Next Move

Pretty quiet day so far on the Dany Heatley front.

Word is the Senators and Oilers are trying to rework the deal they had in place earlier this week. The Oilers are trying to save some face here after what turned out to be an embarrassing series of events on their end as the three names became public only to have Heatley turn the deal down.

The Oilers had plans of a big splash in the free agency market but struck out, partially due to their uncertainty regarding the plans of Heatley. The same can be said for Senators GM Bryan Murray.

The reworked deal would almost certainly see the Senators send a little more salary the Oilers way, most likely in the form of former Oiler Captain, Jason Smith. Hes status is still unknown at this point with some suggesting he may be forced on the long term injury list.

The word today is that the San Jose Sharks may be gearing up for a pitch to acquire Heatley. The Sharks are coming off another playoff disappointment and would love to have Heatley play alongside Thornton. The Sharks need to do something to rejuvenate a frustrated fan base. Heatley could be that something.

Regardless, word is the Senators would like to have this all dealt with as soon as possible but WILL NOT give Dany Heatley away. The Senators look as though they are fully prepared to have Heatley in their line up next season if that's what it comes to.

By the way, the Senators made the signing of Mike Brodeur official yesterday. This move had been rumoured for quite some time. The deal is one year, two way deal.

The Day After

(UPDATE- 2:00 PM)- Sportsnet is reporting that Bill Daly has said the Senators could potentially have grounds for a griveance in the Heatley situation. Even though the bonus has already been paid there is a chance they could be reimburssed.

There are "strong grounds upon which a claim can be pursued. The Ottawa franchise believes it has been damaged." Bill Daly

(UPDATE- 12:43 PM)- The Ottawa Sun is reporting that the deal as it originally stood with the Oilers is dead. This doesn't mean the two teams cant re-work it a little but it wont be exactly the same as it was yesterday. The asking price will be going up for Dany Heatley from here on out.

(UPDATE- 10:32 AM)- Team Canada has released the names of the players that will be invited to their Olympic orientation camp. Dany Heatley was on the list but somehow Jason Spezza was not. I would have thought his performance at the WC's warranted at least an invite but I guess not. Meanwhile Lucic, McDonald, Cleary and Marleau were invited. Pretty debatable.

I'm not sure whats worse. The pounding headache I have from excessive Canada Day celebrations or the nauseating feeling in my stomach caused by the actions of Disgraceful Dany Heatley.

I'm not going to get into a big rant about why what he did was wrong because there will be plenty of that to go around over the next few days.

Heatley's indecision and ultimate refusal to waive his NMC to facilitate the trade HE asked for ultimately cost the Senators any chance at potential UFA targets yesterday and now Bryan Murray is forced to sort through whats left in an attempt to find the top 6 forward he needs. Ottawa had interest in Knuble and Cammalleri and put calls in on Hossa and Havlat but in the end struck out.

$2 million may seem like a lot for Chris Neil but that's what the market put him at. This is a good signing by Bryan Murray because with a team like the Leafs toughening up this off season we are gonna need all the grit we can get. Chris Neil has been a good soldier for this team and it was nice to see him get a long term deal here.

There is a chance Ottawa could look at bringing Mike Comrie back into the fold but it would have to be at a major discount. Another name I have heard is Alex Tanguay but he is likely out of the Senators price range as long as Heatley remains on the roster.

By all accounts this thing with Heatley could get nasty in the coming days. The Heatley camp dug in their heels on the Edmonton request and now Ottawa may be prepared to do the same thing. With the organization forced to cut a cheque to Dany for $4 million the Senators will be more reluctant to move him now.

I want to say that teams will line up for Dany at the discounted rate but I'm not so sure that's the case. Heatley has turned off a lot of people with this act of his and to be honest he should have been flattered anyone wanted him. I can't help but think the Kings, who struck out in free agency yesterday, might rekindle their interest.

As far as I know the offer from the Oilers is still on the table but the thinking is they would have to now take some contracts back in return, possibly former Oiler Jason Smith.

Neil Staying

(UPDATE- 12:30 AM)- Dany Heatley has decided not to waive his NMC to go the Edmonton. The Heatley camp is unhappy that Murray didnt try harder to get something done with another team and almost seems as though hes sticking it to the Senators at this point.

GO AWAY DANY HEATLEY!

(UPDATE- 11:50 PM)- Ten minutes to go till the deadline and the latest from Bob McKenzie is that Dany Heatley will NOT waive his no trade clause. Unbelievable...

(UPDATE 8:55 PM)- TSN is now saying that the Oilers will meet face to face with Heatley tonight to try and convince him. Not done just yet...

Chris Neil has decided to stay with the Ottawa Senators,

4 year deal for 8 million.

Rumours swirling that Heatley has accepted to trade.

Happy Canada Day

(UPDATE- 5:12 PM)- Alright everyone, they say a watched pot wont boil so I'm gonna leave this for now. Heading downtown for the Canada Day Festivities. Dreger says the Oilers are pushing hard right now trying to convince Dany to waive. I fully expect Heatley will be an Oiler by the time I get home tonight. Happy Canada Day everyone!

(UPDATE- 4:37 PM)- Bob McKenzie has just said that at this point it is Edmonton or bust. The Rangers are no longer willing to move Brandon Dubinsky so it really is the Oilers deal or nothing.

(UPDATE- 3:56 PM)- The Ottawa Senators have signed forward Martin St. Pierre. Also, Erik Condra has been inked to an entry level deal.

(UPDATE- 3:50 PM)- From Daren Dreger-Chris Neil is drawing interest from the Leafs, Rangers and Oilers. Looks like he will indeed be leaving Ottawa.

(UPDATE- 3:11 PM)- From the Ottawa Sun Twitter- The Senators may have had an interest in Mike Knuble but he just signed in Washington. Ottawa is looking at other top 6 forward options but would like to resolve the Heatley thing first. Samuelsson or Cammalleri could be potential targets.

(UPDATE- 2:18 PM)- Bruce Garrioch is now saying that Heatley is considering the deal that would send him to Edmonton. Guess this really is a two horse race right now.

(UPDATE- 2:12 pm)- Just spoke to a source who swears Heatley will end up with the Rangers. Just a rumour at this point. We know they are pushing hard right now.

(UPDATE- 2:06 pm)- Still no word from the Heatley camp on the deal with the Oilers. That remains the best deal Murray has on the table. Still not hearing the Senators names in on any of the free agents. I really like Chicago signing Hossa but it most certainly means Havlat will be going elsewhere.

Free agent day is upon us. For Senators fans it should be an exciting day and hopefully the final chapter is this Heatley saga.

Word is a few other teams are putting together offers right now and those teams include the Rangers, Wild, Sharks, Flames and Kings. The Oilers deal has set the bar and now other teams know he type of package they need to put together.

A couple of teams will wait to see where guys like Hossa, Havlat and Gaborik land this afternoon and base their next move on that. Heatley's agents have apparently been trying to broker a deal with the Rangers but have been unsuccessful thus far.

Its nearly Noon, Did Dany sleep in??

I'll post updates as I get them...

Heatley is going to "sleep on it"

After an absolute roller coaster of a night the word is Heatley did not officially reject the deal to the Oilers but rather will "sleep on it."

What I hear is there are still other teams involved and according to the NHL the Senators have the rest of the 1st to deal Dany before the bonus kicks in.

I personally liked the deal with Edmonton but if there are better deals out there then thank you Dany for turning this down. Expect the Rangers, Wild, Kings and Flames to all jump back into the mix tomorrow.

I cant imagine the Oilers are happy about the way all this is unfolding.
