One Last Chance (Update- Gomez to Habs)

(UPDATE 12:37 AM)- Kudos to TSN for clearing something up that I too was unsure about. Apparently if the deal can be done at any point on the 1st of July then the bonus would be transferred. Yay another day of this garbage. This guy has this organization held hostage right now and its becoming embarrassing.

(UPDATE- 12:09 AM)- Garrioch is saying that Heatley has turned down the deal. Unbelievable.

(UPDATE- 11:37 PM)- Hearing conflicting reports that Dany Heatley has accepted the deal to send him to the Oilers. No confirmation yet.

(UPDATE- 10:47 PM) TSN is saying that a deal is done. Heatley to the Oilers for Penner, Cogliano and Smid. Heatley has to approve this deal.

(UPDATE- 9:15 PM)- Sorry guys, been in and out all night. The latest is Chris Neil and his camp have turned down the Senators latest offer. Meanwhile, a Dany Heatley deal is as close as it has been thus far with Garrioch saying it could be pending Heatley's approval. Its not a sure thing with the Oilers like some are suggesting. Other teams are still in the mix. (Rangers, Wild, Sharks and yes the Kings)

(UPDATE- 5:50 PM)- WOW, Just saw that the Rangers have moved Scott Gomez to the Habs (Thanks for the heads up everyone). This move looks like a cap clearing move for the Rangers and could signal their interest in Heatley. Keep your head up everyone! This could be a sign of things to come.

Meanwhile another source has just suggested to me that a deal for Heatley could be done just after midnight. That is of course just a rumour at this point. Not sure what this all means yet but I thought I would fill you in.

(UPDATE- 3:04 PM)- Just spoke to a source who said there has been little to no progress in the trade talks today involving Dany Heatley. There is always a chance things pick up over the course of the night but its not looking good at this point. There are still teams in the hunt but the offers have not increased enough as of yet. Siiiiiiiigh.

Here we sit, the day before the opening of the free agency market and all the talk continues to be about disgruntled winger Dany Heatley.

Murray will make one final pitch to move Heatley before he receives his $4 million bonus on July 1st. The word today is there are still 2 or 3 teams considering making a play for Heatley before that bonus is paid out with the hopes that they may get a better deal.

TSN and other outlets have confirmed that if any team is going to make a move before the bonus its going to be one of the Edmonton Oilers, New York Rangers or the Minnesota Wild. (Sharks could also make a pitch).

If the deal doesn't get done today then you can expect a whole host of other teams to join the fray but at an increased asking price. Murray has made it perfectly clear that if the Senators end up paying the bonus the asking price will be much higher with the trading partner expected to take on a bad contract in any deal. I refuse to believe the Kings aren't interested but they seem to be one of the teams that will wait until after the bonus is paid out to make another pitch.

The incentive is certainly there for one of the interested teams to step up and try and get something done today. Likewise, the Senators would love to avoid paying the bonus and know what kind of money they have to spend in free agency.

With the Dany Heatley situation continuing to hang over this organization there is very little in the way of rumours regarding potential UFA targets heading into tomorrow.

OTHER NEWS

As reported in the Ottawa Sun this morning, there has been slight progress in the negotiations with Chris Neil with both sides expected to make one last pitch today. The Senators other UFA Mike Comrie is expected to be set free into the free agent pool.

Also, RFA Brendan Bell did not receive a qualifying offer and will be allowed to test the market. Brian Elliott did receive an offer and is expected to be under contract shortly.

Two Days to Go

The Ottawa Senators and GM Bryan Murray will be working frantically the next couple of days to find a potential deal for Dany Heatley. The Senators were unsuccessful at the draft but are still holding out hope that a team will step up before they are due to pay Dany Heatley his $4 million bonus on Wednesday.

Bryan Murray has set the bar extremely high and wasn't able to find a taker over the weekend. With that said there are still a few teams that would like to add a guy like Heatley.

The Minnesota Wild, St. Louis Blues, Dallas Stars and New York Rangers and yes the Los Angeles Kings all still have interest in Heatley but as of yet none have been able to reach Murray's asking price.

There has been speculation that the LA Kings have dropped out of the race but that may not be entirely true. An email I received over the weekend explained that the Kings could potentially be working on a deal to acquire the rights of Red Wing Marian Hossa and that may be their Plan A. If that doesn't work out they would almost certainly shift their attention back to Dany.

The Kings have been my front runner all along and there was a very good reason for that. It had been suggested to me that Dany and his agents may have talked to the Kings before issuing their trade demand to see if they had any interest. Haven't been able to confirm this but it would be interesting if it were in fact true. Since then Murray has been working closely with the Kings but hasnt been able to get what he wanted. Apparently Dustin Brown was the target in any deal with Los Angeles.

The Senators desperately want to get this dealt with before July 1 not only because of the bonus but also so they have an idea of what sort of money they have to play with in free agency. Murray has said that if he cant get a deal done before the 1st the asking price for Heatley will increase dramatically.

I can't wait for this to be over.

The Day After

Well day one of the NHL Entry Draft has passed and Dany Heatley is still an Ottawa Senator. Despite Bryan Murray's best efforts he wasnt able to find a new home for Heatley and now his focus shifts to dealing the guy before the July 1 deadline.

Things really worked against the Senators yesterday with their two potential draft targets going in the two selections ahead of them. In the end a pretty good player in Jared Cowen fell to the Senators but he really doesn't fit the profile of what they were looking for heading into the draft.

By all accounts a few teams made pitches yesterday but Bryan Murray simply had the bar set too high. Ottawa was close to dealing him to the Rangers late in the first round but Sather balked at the last minute.

So now what?

Should Murray lower the bar in order to facilitate this trade or are you prepared to see Dany in a Senators uniform this fall?

Its my opinion that Bryan Murray HAS to find a way to get this deal done over the next few days. The Senators have to have this sorted out prior to July 1 so they can plan their approach in free agency.

Draft Day Post

(UPDATE 6:46 PM)- Last update for the night here folks. Hearing that the Kings are being given a last chance to make an offer that Murray can accept. There are still other teams in play so this truly could come down to the wire. Full credit to Bryan Murray for really keeping the media and the fans in the dark on this one. Gonna go grab a cold one and watch the drama unfold! Enjoy the draft everyone!

(UPDATE 4:50 PM)- Back home now and being told that things are starting to 'heat' up. Not many details at this point but a source has told me that the offers are getting serious.

(UPDATE 2:55 PM)- Alright everyone, about to head home for the day. I'll check in once I arrive and hopefully have some good news by then. I am still hoping this will get done but I'll admit I'm nowhere near as optimistic as when I woke up this morning. Sit tight...

(UPDATE 2:05 PM)- Melnyk on the Heatley bonus "There is no way we are paying him his $4 million bonus, I don’t care if he sues us."

(UPDATE 2:00 PM)- I'm being told now that the Senators have gone into a lockdown of sorts. The Heatley talk has carried the day but there are other things they need to prepare for tonight, namely the 9th overall selection. If Kadri isn't there don't be surprised if the Senators select Scott Glennie in the nine hole. Also told that the next couple hours will be critical in the Heatley situation. The time for posturing is running out. If a team wants to acquire Heatley now is the time to get their best deal in. I'll post again if anything comes up.

(UPDATE 12:41 PM)- This really is turning into a big game of chicken between Bryan Murray and the three or four GM's interested in Dany Heatley. There are reports out there saying that this deal wont get done today but I'm not convinced that's not just an intentional leak. One of the teams involved has to step up there offer and blow Murray away. All that said, there still isn't an offer good enough to get a deal done. Clock is ticking...

(UPDATE 11:05 AM)- After what was a worrisome morning it sounds like the offers are starting to come in a little bit and are getting closer to where Murray wants them. Word is there are 3 or 4 teams that are serious at this point! Hope to have more after lunch...

(UPDATE- 8:48 AM)- I should mention its not all doom and gloom. There are offer(s) out there. Just aren't where the Senators want them to be just yet. Plenty of time

(UPDATE-8:39 AM)- People are pointing to the $4 million bonus owed to Heatley as the potential stumbling block. I'm not buying that. If teams are interested they will make a move today.

I have read this a few places now but apparently the offers for Dany Heatley have been unimpressive to say the least.

Spoke to someone yesterday in Montreal who said that while the offers were of the lowball variety so far the Senators are hoping things pick up today.

Ill post updates as I get them.

Until Tomorrow...

Just got word from a source in Montreal that the Heatley deal will not be going down today. Murray is going to give each interested team a chance to put an offer in at some point this evening and then they hope to have a deal in place before the draft tomorrow.

As some of you are pointing out a Minnesota beat writer is speculating that the LA deal will include Frolov, a prospect/player and the 5th overall. This kinda meshes with what we have heard all along in terms of an asking price but it is my understanding that they have not officially tabled such an offer yet. Offers are apparently trickling in at this point but there is nothing that is absolutely blowing Murray away.

The word is that the Senators will have the 'best' offer in place heading into draft day and will then go to the Kings tomorrow and give them a chance to top it.

Just over 24 hours to go till the NHL Entry Draft and the Los Angeles Kings appear to still be in the driver seat in the Dany Heatley sweepstakes.

I don't want to overstate this but hang on tight Senators fans. It appears as though we are heading quickly towards defining moment in the history of this franchise.

I'll post any updates as I get them.

Moving Day

(UPDATE-2:05 PM)- Looks as though the Minnesota Wild have tendered an offer that the Senators really like. The bar has been set. Now its up to another team to step up to the plate if they wanna better the trade being proposed by the Wild.

Today figures to be the most important day in the Dany Heatley sweepstakes to date. Up until now we've seen a whole handful of teams show interest in the sniper but with the draft scheduled for tomorrow night, today is the day that Murray is expected to separate to pretenders from the contenders.

In the last twelve hours I've received tips saying that a deal with Minnesota is all but done and another saying that the Avalanche are closing in on the winning offer. Through all this I still believe that the Kings are in fact the team most likely to table the best offer. The Avalanche hold the third overall pick and if that is part of their offer, Murray needs to jump at that deal. The Wild are in the 12 slot.

I really get the sense there is a lot of posturing going on right now and that potential deals and scenarios are being leaked intentionally to see how other teams react and if in the end it changes the offers being made.

I have heard and read in other places that there is no pressure on Murray to get the deal done this weekend. I don't believe that's the case. Murray has a chance to use Heatley to vault himself into the top 5 in the draft this Friday so he needs to make it happen in just over 24 hours.

Based on everything I have heard, and believe me there has been a ton of information coming in, here is my top 5 teams in the Dany Heatley sweepstakes.

1) Los Angeles Kings- Heatley likes them and they like Heater
2) Minnesota Wild-Coming from a few places and media outlets. Wild are lookin to make a splash
3) Edmonton Oilers- Not sure Dany wants to go there though.
4) Colorado Avalanche- I want that third pick realll bad.
5) San Jose Sharks- Dont have the picks but could get it done with roster guys and prospects.

I wish I could be more specific but a lot of the tips coming in are pretty vague and the Senators are doing a great job of keeping this all under wraps.

Oh and if in the end the Senators do end up holding just the 9th overall pick, I say they go with Nazem Kadri or Scott Glennie.

The Other Side

(UPDATE -7:46 PM)- This is by no means breaking news because I know I have read it a few other places but a source just contacted me and said that the Minnesota Wild are absolutely a player in the race for Heatley. Get in line.

I want to thank the reader who posted this article in the comments section.

For all the bad that is being said about Dany Heatley lately here is a piece that puts an interesting spin on the whole situation.

The article is entitled "Defending Big D(any Heatley): Dispelling 5 Popular Myths" and while I don't necessarily agree with all the points it certainly does make an argument that not many are making around these parts as of late.

I wish the other 29 GM's would read this article before Friday. Then we would really have a bidding war on our hands.

Kudos to the guys at Silver Seven Sens for an interesting post.

Crazy Times

I honestly can not remember the last time I had this many different 'leads' coming in at the same time. With the Draft coming up this Friday there is a phenomenal number of rumours swirling and its getting to the point where it is very difficult to separate fact from fiction.

It is at times like this that GM's and agents tend to 'use' the media to their advantage by putting out false leaks in an effort to either deflect attention from their own team or in the case of Heatley, to potentially drive up the return.

Its for this exact reason that I have been so hesitant when it comes to speculating what the asking price might be for Dany Heatley.

I think this is exactly what we have seen happen over the course of the last week. First came Ron Hextall's comments that the Kings may not be all that interested in Heatley. Then comes an orchastrated press conference from Murray earlier this week saying that there are offers but nothing nearly good enough. The Kings are trying to deflect attention away while Murray is obviously trying to drive up the bid.

I still firmly believe that the LA Kings are the most likely destination for Heatley. The fact that they were one of his requested destinations combined with the Kings obvious need for a scoring left winger really seems to make them the perfect fit.

Are there other teams involved? Absolutely. Each day it seems a new team is added to the list. A list that at this point has grown to no fewer than 8 teams. It is for this reason that I absolutely believe something will get done in time for the draft Friday night. It seems as though there is an all out bidding war starting up with the final offers expected to come in Thursday night and in to Friday morning.

With all the rumours out there though its very difficult to predict exactly what the return will be.

NEIL SET TO WALK?

Interesting article from Bruce Garrioch in today's Sun. It seems as though Chris Neil and his agent Todd Reynolds are getting set to test the free agent market. Neil's price has come down to around 1.7 mil but they may not be enough for the Senators. Having Chris Neil suit up for the Leafs next season would certainly spice up The Battle of Ontario that's for sure.

Heatley Update and the #9

The more I hear the more it sounds like Bryan Murray and about 3 or 4 other GM's are in a high stakes game of chicken leading up to the NHL draft this Friday.

Murray wants to deal Heatley but he doesn't wanna get fleeced in the deal and so far the offers hes getting are no where near what he was hoping for. Word is either 3 or 4 teams (Los Angeles, Minnesota, Edmonton and perhaps Chicago) have been in contact with Murray about Heatley and none have tabled an offer close to what Murray is looking for.

Murray went public yesterday saying that he spoke to one of Heatley's agent and they told him that several teams had contacted them expressing interest. Problem is those teams haven't contacted the Senators. It seems as though teams are trying to wait Murray out and try to force him into a situation where he has to make a deal out of desperation. Not gonna happen...

If the offers don't improve significantly, Dany Heatley will remain a Senator after this Friday's Entry Draft. That said, I believe that there are teams that are very much interested in the two time 50 goal scorer and they will step up their offers in time to get something done.

The Heatley talk has sort of forced the actual draft pick to the back burner over the last couple weeks. The Senators will select at #9 and would very much like to grab Nazem Kadri if he is still available when Ottawa's turn at the the podium arrives. If not, the Senators could look to one of two defenceman (Ekman-Larsen or Kulikov) or potentially Brandon Wheat Kings forward Scott Glennie.

Draft Week

The NHL Draft is rapidly approaching and by all accounts the Senators figure to be one of the leagues busiest teams heading into Montreal this Friday.

The Heatley situation remains unresolved as Bryan Murray continues to seek out the best fit for his team. The Kings have gone public with some comments that seem to indicate that they may not be as hot for Heater as origianlly thought. Despite those comments I continue to hear they will be a major player. The Minnesota Wild have also made their interest known and the Edmonton Oilers continue to wait in the weeds.

While Heatley remains the focus there are a few other players that could find new homes leading up to the draft. The names of Alex Auld and Christoph Schubert have both found their way into the rumour mill and could be flipped for mid to late round draft picks.

Meanwhile, UFA's Chris Neil and Mike Comrie remain unsigned as the July 1 deadlines fast approaches. Talk seems to have gone quiet on both fronts but speaking with Neil's agent Todd Reynolds over the weekend he remains confident that an agreement can be reached before the free agent market opens in a couple of weeks.

Quick Post

Its been a busy weekend for me and haven't had a chance to get to the computer till now.

People have been asking about this possible deal between the Jackets and Senators. All I can say is that while I know Murray is a big fan of Russel's, I haven't heard anything about this deal that would send Auld to Columbus.

The Jackets are absolutely looking for a goaltender to back up Mason but to give up a guy like Russell for a back up goalie seems a little excessive. Its entirely possible the Senators will move Auld before the draft on Friday but don't expect such a high return.

More tomorrow...

Deals Being Constructed

After a few days of just kicking tires I have been told that teams are beginning to actually construct their offers for Dany Heatley. The clock is ticking as Senators GM Bryan Murray would like to have a deal in place before the draft next Friday.

It should come as no surprise that the LA Kings are apparently one of the first teams being mentioned when it comes to actualy putting a deal together. Murray would desperately love to have the Kings 5th overall pick. I keep hearing the name of Jack Johnson in this rumour but I'm sure Murray would rather a prospect like Hickey or Teubert.

The other teams thought to be putting offers together are the Edmonton Oilers and the Calgary Flames. I haven't said a whole lot about the Flames thus far but the availability of Dion Phaneuf certainly makes them an interesting option.

That said, I am pretty confident in saying that Heatley would much prefer a trade to Los Angeles than Calgary or Edmonton but like many are saying, Dany may not have a choice. If he really does want out of Ottawa that badly, he may have to be willing to waive his NMC to accommodate a deal to Alberta.

Its a good sign that the bidding war is starting this early. Don't be surprised if Murray waits till draft day or the night before to actually pull the trigger on this deal.

Heatley's Choice?

Sorry about yesterday's post guys. I know I threw it up around 3:00 yesterday but when I went to find it today it wasn't there. It should be back up now. Now on to today's business...

You can be certain that from now until the day the Senators officially move Heatley there is going to be a new rumour popping up everyday. Case and point was yesterday's blockbuster involving the Lightning, Kings and Senators (Nothing to it by the way) that would apparently see Vinny and Heatley move in the same mega-deal. Talk like this is only going to escalate in the next couple of weeks.

For those of you who have been following my coverage of the Heatley Sweepstakes to date you will know that I have called the Kings the favourites from the get go and that remains unchanged.

What I have been told however is that when Heatley came to the Senators with his trade request the Kings were one of the teams he would accept a trade to and may in fact have been the ONLY team mentioned.

That said, just because Dany wants to go there doesn't mean Murray has to oblige. If Heatley wants out of Ottawa as bad as it appears he does, he may have to be more flexible in terms of possible destinations.

Mlakar out, More on Heatley

As was mentioned here over the last month, long time President Roy Mlakar is leaving the Ottawa Senators Organization. Roy's contract is up at the end of the month and the plan is to officially replace him with Cyril Leeder. This all works out to be a bit of a cost cutting move by Melnyk as Murray will handle the hockey operation and Leeder will run the business side of things.

On the Dany Heatley front, it is being reported that the Vancouver Canucks could be another potential destination for the grumpy sniper. I personally cant see it happening but the guys from the Boston Globe seem to think its a possibility. They do have a ton of cap space which I suppose makes the addition a possibility.

There hasn't been much in the way of reaction from the Senators organization but I have been told that the players are extremely disappointed in the news from Heatley and really had no idea this was coming. Some have apparently gone as far as to try and contact their beleaguered teammate and haven't got a response.

Anyone else think there is more to this than the Clouston factor? This just isn't sitting right for me.

Early Vegas odds are in and the Senators sit at 45/1 to win the Cup in 2010. Everyone likes an underdog!

Monday Musings (Heatley and Neil Updates)

(UPDATE 4:59 PM)- Bruce Garrioch is now reporting what was mentioned here last week. The Ottawa Senators will not renew the contract of Roy Mlakar. In the meantime, Cyril Leeder will run the business side while Bryan Murray takes care of the hockey operations. Mlakar did some great work here and wont be out of work for long.

The first couple of days were actually quite slow in the Dany Heatley sweepstakes but by all accounts things have picked up over the last 48 hours. With the NHL season officially complete (Congratulations to the Penguins, by the way) you can expect that things will continue to heat up.

The NHL draft goes in under 12 days so the clock is ticking on Bryan Murray to find the right fit when it comes to a trade involving sniper Dany Heatley. I still feel as though the Kings are the favourites but they are apparently being joined by the Oilers, Avalanche, Flames and Sharks in their pursuit. Edmonton would love to land Heatley's services but I'm not entirely convinced Heatley would approve a trade to Edmonton.

The more I hear the more it sounds like Heatley may have a very short list of teams that he would approve a trade to. I can't say with 100% certainty but I have been lead to believe that the Los Angeles Kings are one of those teams.

The Senators would like to find their way into the top 5 in the draft and of the teams in the hunt only the Kings and Avs have top 5 picks.

While the Heatley talk has consumed Sens fans over the last week there are other issues that need to be addressed. Despite some reports to the contrary, I have been told that the Senators have not cut off negotiations with the Chris Neil camp and the two sides continue to try and bridge the gap.

Last I heard the figures being discussed were in the neighbourhood of $1.7 mil a season.

The Signing Bonus

(UPDATED- 3:56 PM)- According to Rich Hammond, a credible blogger for the LA Kings and big fan of SensChirp, Kings GM Dean Lombardi has said regarding the Pronger trade; "rumours not true". What a circus this is becoming.

(UPDATED- 2:10 PM)- Alright the story is back up now so clearly there is something to it. It now just says that Pronger is headed to LA but does not say whats going the other way.

(UPDATED- 1:46 PM)- The story has since been taken down. Not sure what to make of it at this point. Seems odd that a deal of that magnitude would be announced on the same day as Game 7 of the Stanely Cup Finals.

(UPDATED-1:23 PM)- Andy Strickland over at Hockeybuzz is reporting that the LA Kings have traded Jack Johnson and the 5th overall pick to the Ducks for Chris Pronger. This would likely change the Heatley landscape a great deal....

As Bruce Garrioch pointed out this morning, the $4 million dollar signing bonus owed to disgruntled winger Dany Heatley on July 1 could be a potential stumbling block in any deal the Senators try to make.

Heatley is owed a total of 8 mil next season, half of which is to be paid in the form of a bonus on July 1. If the Senators can move the winger before that date they would be off the hook for the bonus owing. That combined with the desire to use Heatley as a way to obtain additional draft picks gives Bryan Murray extra motivation to try and get a deal done sometime in the next couple of weeks.

With the draft set for June 26, the clock is ticking on the Senators to try and get this situation resolved as soon as possible. If the Senators cant get something done before then there is less need to rush the situation and they can afford to wait for a better deal.

A couple days into the sweepstakes and the Kings remain the odds on favourite to land the services of Dany Heatley. The Heatley camp has said that it does not have to be a Western Conference team but from what I hear that would be their ideal scenario. Along with LA, teams like the Colorado Avalanche, Edmonton Oilers, Calgary Flames and the San Jose Sharks are expected to enter the fray.

My money is still on the Kings. It's been discussed to no end but with pieces like Frolov (Good friend of Volchenkov), Hickey, Teubert, Johnson and the 5th overall pick they certainly have the potential to table an extremely attractive offer.

The NHL season wraps up this evening with a deciding Game 7 at Joe Louis Arena. Once the season concludes you can expect the trade talk to really heat up.

So Now What?

What a strange Tuesday it was in Senators land. In case you've been living on another planet and haven't heard, two time 50 goal scorer Dany Heatley has asked Senators GM Bryan Murray for a trade. Citing differences with new Coach Cory Clouston, Heatley is ready to pack up and leave the Nation's Capital.

I took a day to let it all sink in yesterday and I'm still in disbelief. Now while I'm sure I'm not alone in harbouring some angry and confused feelings towards the former fan favourite I think I will just keep those to myself.

The fact is Murray now has to seek out a home for Heatley. While the price is high, the Senators should have no trouble finding a team interested in Heater. From what I've been told this is a move Murray would like to have done prior to the Entry Draft on June 26th. The hope is that the Senators can potentially use Heatley to move up.

Everyone is in agreement it will be a Western Conference team. According to preliminary reports, the Los Angeles Kings are the runaway favourite in the suddenly popular Dany Heatley sweepstakes. The Kings currently hold the 5th overall selection in the Draft and have a stockpile of young talent. They have also gone public with their desire to acquire a scoring left winger and really seem like the ideal trading partner.

It's my understanding that Heatley, who has a NMC, would have to approve any such deal and would be just fine with a move to Los Angeles. Its believed Heatley's preference is to move to the Western Conference.

Apparently teams have been a little hesitant so far. Things are still pretty quiet in terms of teams actually putting in calls about Heatley. There will no doubt be a few teams calling in the next couple weeks but the Kings appear to be the early favourites.

Heatley Wants Out

UPDATE (2:45 PM)- It should come as no surprise but apparently part of the reason for the request has to do with Coach Clouston. Heatley was unhappy with his role under the Senators new bench boss and that influenced his decision. Give me a freakin' break. Rumour has it Heatley may also want to be closer to the lady in his life. So long Dany...

UPDATE (1:15 PM)- I have had a chance to ask around and this is the real deal. Heatley has indeed asked for a trade out of Ottawa.

This one has kind of caught me off guard. A few weeks back a source suggested to me that I keep an eye on Dany Heatley this off season and I was pretty quick to dismiss it.

Now, comes a story from EJ Hradek of ESPN that says the Senators sniper may be looking for a change of scenery.

I'll continue to chase this down this afternoon.

For those interested I will be live blogging Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals tonight for The Score. You can bet online we will talk Heatley during the intermissions! Stop by if you get a chance.

Our Next President?

The Ottawa Senators continue to have an area of uncertainty when it comes to who the next President of the organization will be.

Everyone seems to agree that long time President Roy Mlakar is one his way out but there isn't much out there on who will replace him. This seems like the type of story the media here in Ottawa would want to cover but there hasn't been a whole lot on it as of yet. I've been asking around on this for awhile and there seem to be a few different avenues Ottawa is looking at.

-The first and most obvious choice is to just promote Cyril Leeder to the position. Leeder has done great work with the organization and appears to be the ideal 'promote from within' candidate.

- Go outside the organization to find the ideal hire. The name of Bob Nicholson has circulated around at different times this off season and would be a nice fit should the Senators decide to go outside the organization.

- A third scenario would see Bryan Murray perhaps promoted to the President role while also holding on to his GM position. Having Murray in the dual role would save the Senators a bit of a money and is apparently an option that is being considered.

The search for the next President of the organization isn't exactly fascinating news at this point but you would think its something the Senators would like to have resolved as soon as possible. With the Draft just over two weeks away and the opening of free agency just over three, there are certainly more pressing concerns facing this organization in the days to come.

Senators to Sign Brodeur?

The Ottawa Senators may have addressed their need for goaltending depth in the organization and are expected sign a goalie by the name of Brodeur...

Sorry, its not Martin but rather Mike Brodeur. He spent last season with Rochester in the AHL and is rumoured to be on the Senators radar.

He would actually provide the Senators with some solid depth at the AHL level and could get a shot at the starting role down there. This would also gives the Sens another goalie in the system and may ultimately lead to Alex Auld being moved this off season.

Still waiting for something official on this.

Stay tuned....

Another UFA Update

Three more games at most remaining on the NHL schedule. A gutsy effort by the Pittsburgh Penguins on home ice has forced the Stanley Cup Finals into a best of three, beginning Saturday night in Detroit.

With the NHL schedule wrapping up, teams and their GM's will need to get down to business in preparation for the Entry Draft on June 26 and the opening of free agency July 1. In addition to the two RFA's (Brian Elliott and Brendan Bell), Bryan Murray will have to make important decisions regarding unrestricted free agents Mike Comrie and Chris Neil.

I actually had a chance to communicate with the agent of Chris Neil earlier today. Mr. Reynolds explained that the discussion between the two sides has been healthy and that both sides would like to see a 'win-win solution' that would keep Chris Neil in a Senators uniform next season and beyond.

Chris Neil has made it clear all along that he wants to stay in Ottawa, both for his career and for his family. Here's hoping something gets done.

When it comes to the Senators other UFA, forward Mike Comrie, negotiations continue. Bruce Garrioch reported yesterday that the Senators and Comrie had opened negotiations on a new deal to keep Comrie in Senators colours next season.

Its my understanding that there is a contract to be had in the neighbourhood of 2 years at $2.5 million a season.

More on Chris Neil

-Another day, another perspective on the Chris Neil situation. In an article from Ian Mendes of Sportsnet, quotes from the agent of Chris Neil seem to indicate that the rugged winger will indeed test the free agent market. Despite what this article says I continue to hear the same thing, the two sides are very very close number wise but there is still distance to be made up between the two sides.

-Reading around various other rumours sites and Senators blogs there appears to be a consensus of sorts when it comes to the Senators interest in former Flames forward Mike Cammalleri.

I mentioned this as a possibility earlier this off season but I was told that he would serve as a replacement should the Senators move out one of their bigger contracts. Cammalleri is likely to get in the neighbourhood of 5 mil on a long term deal so if the Senators do want to take a run at him they will need to make some cap room first.

-Various outlets are reporting that ex-Ottawa goalie Ray Emery is set to make a return to the NHL. That's right, the former Senator bad boy is going to be making a return to the NHL with the Flyers. After a strong season in Russia, Emery has absolutely earned another shot in the NHL and I wish him all the best.

The Flyers are clearly rolling the dice on Rayzor but love him or hate him, there was never doubting the guys talent. If he can get his head straight he will have all kinds of success in Philly.

Spezza not Going Anywhere?

According to a story from Bruce Garrioch, the Senators will not be dealing Jason Spezza at any time this off season. There had been speculation he could be on the move, perhaps at the Entry Draft, but that talk has been at least partially silenced.

"To be there, he has to be stronger and he recognizes that. I don't see any need to do anything other than to get him to play at the top level every night." Bryan Murray

While this quote won't completely silence the trade talk, it is at least mildly reassuring for those who want to see Spezza stay, myself included. Murray will no doubt have offers for his star centre this month but by the sounds of this, he certainly won't be actively shopping Spezza.

In the same article, Murray also confirms what was said here over the last month. The two sides in the Chris Neil negotiations are not that far apart and there is definitely a deal to be had. And for what its worth, Andy Strickland over at Hockeybuzz, also seems to think a deal will get done.

Murray also mentions that the club will be looking to add a top 6 type forward through free agency and that he like the make up of the defence.

Nothing groundbreaking here but its nice to see some Senators news back in the papers.

Tuesday Notes

-The contract with forward Ryan Keller was made official yesterday. It will be a one year/two way deal. Bryan Murray deserves a ton of credit for getting Keller to come over on a two way deal. Its a low risk situation for the Senators and if Keller cant crack the big club then he will give Bingo some much needed forward depth

Some people were speculating yesterday that perhaps the addition of Keller signals the departure of a guy like Mike Comrie or even Chris Kelly. Keller seems like a cheaper version of these two guys and could give the Senators a little more wiggle room against the cap.

-Speaking of cap space, the rumour out there is that Jason Smith could potentially retire before the start of next season. I'll continue to chase this down but its just speculation at this point. Not exactly sure how it works but I believe that if Smith does pack it in, his salary comes off the Senators cap. If anyone knows otherwise feel free to correct me.

-The NHL GM's are in Pittsburgh today so expect some trade talk to start to rumble in the coming days.

-Lastly, two Ottawa Senators prospects, Erik Karlsson and Kaspar Daugavins, were selected in the KHL draft yesterday. This is extremely.....irrelevant.

In unrelated news, I spent last night at Local Heroes, trying out for Drafted- a contest being put together by The Score to find Canada's next great sportscaster. The show gives the public a chance to audition in front of the camera and potentially receive a one year contract as an on air talent at The Score. I was unfortunately not selected to move on to the next round but I want to thank everyone at The Score and their sponsor Gillette for putting on this great event. Very cool idea. Good luck to the people that were selected!

Jacques to Coach Habs?!

Sounds like another slow Monday in Ottawa Senators land. The team's focus has shifted to the NHL Entry Draft coming up later this month but other than that seems as though things have gone relatively quiet.

There is however an interesting story developing in Montreal today. Rumour has it that the Montreal Canadiens are looking at former Senators Head Coach Jacques Martin to take over the coaching reigns next season. Martin is currently under contract with the Panthers but is negotiating a buy out there so he can take the Montreal job.

Martin was a very successful regular season coach with the Senators but when it came to playoff time he never could seem to get this team over the hump. It appears as though he will take his low key, defense-first style to the sunken ship that is the Montreal Canadiens.

Normally I would wish Martin all the best but if he does indeed take the Habs job may he have nothing but bad luck and be fired mid season.

Have fun Jacques...

I'll post anything else as it comes in.
