Gonna try this out. Haven't done one of these before so you will have to bare with me.

We'll get started at 11:00 AM.

Good luck Fish!

On the Senators front, Nick Foligno is back in the line up tonight and will skate on the 4th line.

Pascal Leclaire will start in goal.

No line up changes other than that...

Mike said...

for what its worth (and thats not much) but mcguire stated today that fisher makeing the team was very unlikley...

Anonymous said...

Hey Chirp.
Have you been impressed with the
Ruutu-Kelly-Cheechoo line lately? Their hard work and checking has been exceptional. I'd like to see Regin with Michalek and Shannon, and Fisher centering Kovalev and Neil (until Foligno is potentially moved up to that line). What do you think?

GORLEY said...

McGuire's a goof... biased fool! Fisher will make this before Morrow, Doan, and Staal (both bros.). How is it unlikely? Get your head out of your ass Pierre, jesus christ! GO FISH!

JustSayin said...

McGuire is an idiot and a whore.

Anonymous said...

Foligno 4th line that's strange?

Anonymous said...

As much as I'd love to see Fisher on the team, he won't be unless several players get injured. It's a long shot.

3twelve said...

Gorley, looks like you were very wrong.

F - Crosby (A), Bergeron, Perry, Iginla, Getzlaf, Morrow, Nash, Heatley, Marleau, M. Richards, E. Staal, Thornton, Toews
D – Boyle, Doughty, Keith, Neidermeyer (C), Pronger (A), Seabrook, Weber
G – Brodeur, Luongo, Fleury

Mike said...

wow so morrow and staal make it over fisher? ridiculous... I guess he was right after all...

BeJamin said...

I think it should have been Fisher ahead of Morrow. Fisher is having the better year. I don't like the veteran presence excuse. Fisher has just as much experience as Brendan at this point in his career.

Andrew said...

foligno on the 4th is a mistake. He was really driving the net before he went down.

Anonymous said...

No Fisher what crap. Morrow and Richards have been stinking it up all year. Better not mean a silver medal.

Mike said...

not very happy with morrow, staal and bergeron making it over fisher at this point in the year...

Mat said...

I guess Yzerman has no balls then.

Instead of building a true championship team, he opts for the same formula that cost us the tournament in Torrino: a team of stars.

His only ballsy move is Doughty over Bouwmeester.

This team is lacking the heart and grit you need on a winning third and fourth line. This team should've had at least two of these 4 players: Doan, Smyth, Fish, J Staal.

And E. Staal over St-Louis? Way to alienate a player that has always been at the top of his game in Team Canada events.

We're not going to lose but some of the players on the roster are going to harness parts of themselves they never had to show before.

Charles Comisky said...

When did Pierre McGuire become such a clown ?

All that's missing is the face paint and the orange wig.

Cassie said...

To those wondering about Foligno on the 4th line: It's to ease him back into the line up after his injury. It's not a knock on his play, it's to get him used to playing again.

Chris K said...

Why is everyone so upset that Fisher isnt on the team? Why are you all taking it so personally?? Only people in Ottawa thought he would make the team (including myself).. but you have to look at specifics.. maybe Canada needed an extra LW or RW, someone with a good faceoff%, etc.. Im pissed he didnt make it too, but if anything, i think this will light an even bigger spark under him, and he will play even better just to show up Yzerman.. andyou never know, maybe if there is an injury, he could replace someone, so he has to keep playing at the level he is at right now.

This team is not made up of "stars" .. its a very young team with only a few veteran players. I love our Defence, but our Forwards stink (in comparison to ther teams).. Russia will mop the floor with us.. I hope im wrong

Brooke, I'll wait for your reply..

GO SENS!

Arnold Rothstein said...

The movie that Hollywood will make about the 2010 Canadian Olympic team in about 20 years will go something like this ....

All three Staal brothers will be on theteam AND
play on the same forward line AND
wear numbers 16, 17,18 AND
wear large glasses while playing !

And Brad Pitt will be the team coach !

And Natalie Portman will be his ex-wife!

This stuff just writes itself !

Anonymous said...

At least Fisher won't get hurt there like Hasek a few years ago.. Only positive thing in that situation..

Sleepy Bill Burns said...

Will Karlsson play tonight ?

If yes - will it be for Ottawa or Binghampton ?

Eric said...

I agree with those pundits who claim that a few of our forwards are of the softer variety... the trio from San Jose come to mind.

But there's no way anyone will be to knock around the likes of Iginla, Nash, Morrow, Staal and Richards. There's a great combination of grit and scoring...

We're a long, long way from having another club with Rob Zamuner on the ice.

PN said...

What's the over under on how long it will take someone from the PQ to complain that there are only 2 francophone players on the team?

You think that maybe that gave Bergeron an edge over the other bubble players?

Anonymous said...

I cant believe patrice bergeron made it and Mike Fisher didnt make the cuts. Thats the only mistake canada is goin to regret other then that Canada for gold BABY!!!

Anonymous said...

Bergeron is better than Fisher- a better 2 way player and has actually played well internationally (with Crosby noless).

For anyone to say that Brenden Morrow has been stinking it up this year, look again, he actually is doing well and he is a gritty player. Morrow and Richards on a line together will be tought to play against.

My only gripe is that Crosby should have been names Captain, but at least he has an "A".

We're the team to beat by far.

Mike said...

Chris k: It wasnt just people in Ottawa it was many analysts, and Don Cherry even (Ottawa hater) had fisher on his team... We knew he was on the bubble only but, when players such as Morrow, Richards and Staal make it over him, it doesnt make alot of sense.

Anonymous said...

Unlike u lot I am happy Fish did not make the team Canada, because they took on Heatley and after what he did to this club, to me thats not a player in good standing. I will watch the games and boycotte all the advertisers. I would like to see swed win again, and it would be better for hockey if the US won.

THE BLACK TERROR said...

Don't take it personally that Fisher didn't make the team folks. He wasn't even in the discussion in October, and he was probably one of the last cuts in the end, so good for Mike. This is a good team without him, they would have been good with him too, but they opted to go with a couple guys with more international experience, hard to fault Yzerman et al for that.

All Fisher has to do now is keep his nose clean, work his tail off, and if someone gets hurt before the Olympics, hopefully Fisher gets his shot.

synthetek said...

GO TEAM SWEDEN!!!!!

Anonymous said...

I for one will be happy when the NHL no longer supports the Olympics.
Remember when Grandpa Hasek took lost us the cup?
You sign a contract to play the season and get hurt playing elsewhere...why should someone else pay for it( your salary or the cup)?
I understand that playing for your counrty is a great thing.
But some of us hardcores want results from our teams. Not to watch the season go down due to injury.
I get hurt away from work I don't get paid.
Just saying

On another note:
Fish you should have been on that list, you rock. Everyone else come home healthy and good luck.

Andre said...

Unlike a lot of people here I would never insult anybody for merely stating their opinion but PN, you really are an idiot.

Anon 2:46, I'm with you. I really hope Canada gets spanked. After Heatley's reprehensible behaviour last summer, the fact that he made the team tells me that character and selflessness don't matter - only winning no matter what. Besides, I'm so sick and tired of hearing about this olympic hockey bullshit every 5 minutes. Yay, we get to see the same millionaire pros that we already see over 80 times per year. We get to see spoiled assholes like heatley steal the spotlight from amateur athletes who sacrifice so much to only get the chance to shine every 4 years.

Personally, I'm going to be cheering for Finland.

Anonymous said...

Love Fish but he brings same thing as Bergi, morror and Richards.Hardly an outrage he didn't get named. Only player I'm stunned that didn't make it is St Louis.

Anonymous said...

Anyone who says they aren't going to cheer for Canada(unless you're from another country) is just full of it.

You will bitch and moan and say 100 valid points but you'll be watching if the Canadians get to the Gold Medal game, and you'll cheer if they win. Simple as that.

cp said...

I wish none of them made it. Olympics are for amateur athletes, not professional millionaires. The best vs the best should take place at a World Cup tourney, not the Olympics.

Just my 2 cents

That being said, sorry you didn't make it Fish ... and F'You MEatley.

Heatley deserves to be on the team, and we still don't even know the real reason he wanted to leave the Sens.

Go cheer for Finaldn and enjoy them not even medaling.

BeJamin said...

Team Canada has no Grit? Are you kidding me guys?

Eric Staal, Rick Nash, Corey Perry, Ryan Getzlaf, Iginla, Pronger, Seabrooke and I could go on. These guys are all a dominating physical presence when they are out there. That will not be an issue for this team.

I think that the only player Fisher could reasonably be expected to replace is Morrow or Bergeron.

Those are the two positions that have been given to guys known for their two-way game who have put up decent numbers and in at least one case been excellent in the face-off circle.

Keep in mind that Savard, Brad Richards, St.Louis, Lecavalier, and Stamkos have all been left off the team. These guys would likely have to be swapped in for a more offensive player if they were to be inserted into the lineup. In most cases the guy that would be coming out is just as good as the guy going in.

Overall I'm pretty happy with the choice of the team. My bias would say I'd prefer Fisher over Bergeron or Morrow. The next guy I'd put in the lineup would be Brad Richards, Stamkos, St.Louis in that order.

Anyone who thinks Eric Staal shouldn't be on this team is being biased. He's the whole team in Carolina if you didn't forget. He doesn't exactly have much help over there lately. Also if he was to be left off it would be Stamkos or Richards coming in to replace his role, not Fisher. Fisher could only replace Bergy or Morrow.

@ Andre

Couldnt have said it any better myself!!!

Personnaly I think Russia will win, they have WAY too much fire power to be stopped in a short tourney.

Russia Gold
Sweden Silver
Canada Bronze

BeJamin said...

Also the one notable change I'd make to the defense is Green over Doughty. Doughty is good but Green is just too ridiculously amazing as an offensive PP specialist to leave off. That's a big weapon to leave at home. He's +15 this year too so he's creating more than he gives up. Although it's pretty close between the two players.

Dogg64 said...

I'm worried about this Team Canada.... Neidermayer, Morrow and Doughty should not be there.. bring in Fisher, Ryan Smyth and Boumeester instead!

They should definately have gone with who's hot right now (Fisher) - some of the guys chosen are not exactly having career years.

Anonymous said...

I'm upset that Fisher did not make the team.. But I realize he was a long shot. Not having someone like Smyth and/or Doan could cost this team. Both players are TWO-WAY players - hard to the net- and play with heart.
I'm concerned with the San Jose line. Yes Heatley was going to make this team regardless of anything - he has a great history with Team Canada. He is having a great year points wise. But my main concern is with Marleau & Thornton. Both do not show up in the Stanley Cup playoffs. The last two years in San Jose proved that. The medal rounds of the Olympics will be like the playoffs.. except lose one game and you are out. Can Marleau and Thornton play up to their capabilities in the medal rounds.. I certainly hope so, or Canada will have to go with just 3 lines.. which could prove costly. I don't think the Russian, Swedish or USA defense is going to let Heatley hang around the slot waiting for a Thornton pass.
Irregardless as to whose on the team, I will cheer for Canada anyway. Here's hoping for GOLD.

Anonymous said...

You know, I tend to agree with you Andre. I love Canada, and would cheer for them if Fisher made the team, but I can't help thinking I'll be cheering Alfie on.

Hax said...

To all you guys whining about "no grit" etc. Please take a minute to realize that many of the guys on the team will be filling different roles in the Olympics than they do in the NHL. Iggy is a prime example - he'll be a checker mostly at the games since plenty of other guys can score.

That's a little black-and-white since of course Iggy will score as well - but there are plenty of guys that can play physical etc.

I feel bad for Fish since I think he deserves it, but so do the guys who made the team (other than Dany the Douche). But honestly, I'll be cheering for Canada to win gold as I hope most of you will. I'll also be rooting for Alfie, Ruutu, Volchenkov etc to play well and not get hurt, but the gold goes to Canada.

This site is almost as bad as the post-game on Team1200 sometimes. (The comments only, Chirp's input is always worth it.)

Anonymous said...

Fisher is a better bottom six guy than Bergy, but with Nash, Iggy, Staal, Perry, Morrow and Mike Richards, I guess they have enough grit to carry them through. Have to say that with the expectations Richards had coming off a terrific season, he has not played as well as Fish.

Anonymous said...

Yzerman's a flippin idiot....This may bite him in the ass.

Anonymous said...

Canada will have a great top line with Thorton, Marleau & Heatley...proven playoff warriors that bring it when the pressure is on down.....errr maybe not

CrazyCanuck said...

To say that Canada is the team to beat, 'by far', is totally assanine. This tournament is more wide open than it has ever been. The Slovaks, Czechs, Finns, Swedes, Americans and especially Russia have just as good a chance of winning it as anyone. It really bothers me how biased the Canadian media has become in recent years. We're getting ALMOST as bad as the Americans. We used to pride ourselves, as a nation, as being objective in our views and media coverage. Take a good long look at the Russian line up, it is really something to behold... Their first 2 lines, are as good or better, than every teams number one line. Of course this is all just on paper, and anything can and will happen, which is why we play the games. But, don't go fooling yourselves in thinking that we are somehow a juggernaut comapred to everyone else...

Mat said...

PN:

There are actually 4 francophones on the team (Luongo, Brodeur, Fleury, Bergeron) and a few that speak french fluently (Boyle, Toews and Crosby).

If anything, Gilles Duceppe is probably happy his good friend Doan is not on the team...

Ross said...

Guys, im upset about fish too, but thats no need to go around saying ridiculously unintelligent things. Heatley wanted out of here for a reason untold, he's alluded to it multiple times. He's the best around the net finisher in the game today. And his line is lighting it up. The SJ line will do well in this tournament, because the teams we are playing against for the most part don't have the required grit to shut them down. So shutup, heatley is a good choice.

I don't like bergeron, he's overrated. To keep St. Louis off, who was one of our only players to show up in Torino, is ridiculous. I dont care what hand bergeron shoots with. St. Louis over Bergeron.

Morrow I didn't like at first, but I realize looking at the roster that he is one of only two strong net presences on the team, along with Heatley. Don't be surprised if that comes in handy.

Fisher basically got beat out by Richards for that spot, and anyone who tries to tell me that Richards isnt better is a homer. Sorry guys, thats the truth. Philly is in turmoil right now, but he is a better player.

Lastly, anyone who doesn't like E Staal on the team must have one short term memory. The guy carried his team to multiple conference finals and one cup 3 times in the last what 5 years?. CARRIED. He is a big game player and will not dissapoint. Mark my words.

Oh and Bouwmeester over seabrook. Yeah yeah duncan keith, Chemistry schmemistry. Still. Bouwmeester > Seabrook.

Anonymous said...

Love him or hate him, I have a feeling Heatley will put up some major numbers for team Canada this year. He's great under the international scope. But yeah, he is a douche bag for bailing on our Sens.

Anonymous said...

ANON 8:29
Heatley may put up big numbers against Normay, Latvia, ie weaker teams.. but against Sweden, Russia USA not so much. I bet if someone looked at his Team Canada stats most of his goals are against the weaker teams -- than against the great teams.
I don't think they will keep the San Jose line together the whole tournament.. A good checking line will shut them down 5 on 5 -- They should put Heatley-Getzlaf-Nash together -- they were great at the World Championship.Getzlaf and Nash can forecheck and have some grit -- something Heatley does neither of..
