Not much going on today in the world of the Ottawa Senators...
The Sen were off the ice today and will be back at it tomorrow when they visit the suddenly streaking Toronto Maple Leafs.
I was hoping to have another "Chirp of the Week" to post today but there haven't been any sent in the last little while. If you would like to have your rant featured here on SensChirp send it to sensrumours@hotmail.com and I'll try and get it up next Sunday.
A couple pieces of Senators related news. According to Brent Wallace of TSN, Senators prospect Patrick Wiercioch has been sent back to Denver and will not participate in the World Junior Camp after all. Wiercioch has a pre-existing knee injury that will keep him out of the selection camp.
Too bad. I was looking forward to a Team Canada defence that featured Wiercioch and first round pick Jared Cowen. Wiercioch is being replaced 67's defenceman Tyler Cuma.
As many of you have already heard, Sens centre Jason Spezza is selling his $7 million dollar home on Island Park. Spezza has said he will not comment on the issue but it's sure to fuel unfounded speculation in the city.
I would assume he's just looking to move a little closer to the rink.

As for Spezza selling his house. I'm just going to say thanks to all those idiots who kept raging on Spezza. You guys just ran another star player out of town.

If Spezza ends up asking out of Ottawa, those fans will be to blame. Those same fans will probably say that it will improve our team as well...because true #1 C's are so easy to find in the NHL.
Hopefully this isn't a cause for concern and, like Chirp said, he's just moving closer to the arena.

dont blame the fans : Spezza new wife wants out of Ottawa, and after seening what Heatley has now why would he want to play in Ottawa If myself or you where Spezza you would ask to be traded as well, I would want sun shine every day as well, and he has a NTC so now he can pick where he wants to go. so dont blame the fans blame where we live and his wife.

What is wrong with some of you Sens fans. Get behind your team. Spezza played one of his best games in a while and you're still criticizing the guy. If you don't like it/him, there's plenty of other NHL teams you can cheer for.
Spezza's wife is having an affair with Pronger, and Pronger's wife is having an affair with Spezza. Spezza will be shipped to Philly so he can play with his old pal Emery. Coming back to Ottawa will be Pronger and a 1st. BOOK IT (Spezza will fly American Airlines, and Pronger will fly Air Canada.) The draft pick will be sent electronically, my sources say.

If there has been any Senator that has taken all the media craziness and dealt with it perfectly it's Spezza. He has been ripped no matter what he does and always smiles and comes back for more.

Spezza isnt going anywhere...in fact i dont think they could trade spezza, nobody has 7 million available to give to a guy that is really struggling right now. We would get peanuts for him, spezza will remain here for years.
Spezza has said repeatedly he likes playing for the Sens and has no interest in being moved. The guy just got married so it's no surprise he might want new digs for him and his wife.
Some players may only consider the weather when they decide on what team to play for, but not Spezza. He accepts the pressure of playing in a Canadian market and we're seeing him mature and develop into a two-way player we'd hope he'd become. Growing pains this year for him to adjust to his new playing style, for sure, but he's talented enough and hard-working that the Sens will reap the benefits of his work ethic.

@Rizzo Couldn't of said it any better! Spezza doesnt want to leave and has been playing the way all sens fans have wanted him to play all along, but now that he isnt scoring as much we bash him for that? Yes obviously we want him to put the puck in the net but that will come with time, he is back checking, playing great defensively and taking more shots. I have no complaints about Spezza. He is the future of this team, he will be here for years to come and will be given the C when Alfie hangs em up. Which is ok in my books.

My cousin lives on the street over from Spezza...really nice area. He said the rumour in the neighbourhood is that Spezza had no privacy at that location. His door is like 20ft from the street and he is on a street corner that is close to a school. Apparently he wants something more secluded with a lot more privacy.
I thought mike cowpland had the most expensive home in Ottawa...his house looks like a shopping mall!
I'm sure Spezza' wife was in the decision process when he purchased his home as he has only owned if for a 1 1/2 yrs.

On a completely RANDOM note, I was just on youtube looking at Kovalev highlights, and happened to stumble upon some Komisarek highlights, and I have to say, he is the biggest bitch in the NHL, PERIOD. He seems to want to take on inferior players in size in fights, and whenever he takes on a true heavyweight (Lucic, Brashear), he gets his ass kicked. He is also a very dirty player, and watching a few Leafs games this year, he does not stand up for teammates and is the biggest waste of money and a roster spot. I hope he gets another beatdown from someone in the league this year, and just gets the fuck out of the NHL so I don't have to look at his pussy mug ever again.

I've read or heard somewhere (was it Scanlan?) that the local school has had to repeatedly ask the kids to stop knocking on his door for autographs.
There's no way Ottawa's trading Spezza - he's our franchise center, for the foreseeable future and we could do a lot worse, IMHO.
He's been in a slump but he's starting to break out of it (3 points in his last 4 games). I'd bet the farm he'll still put up 60 by the end of the season.
Rumor has it that Forsberg is the one who bought Spezza's house.
You know, it's fine to back up Spezza and defend the guy, I get that. If you don't want him traded or think it would put the franchise back some who are we to disagree? To say he is the future captain in Ottawa is just wrong!
There are 2 guys right now that are in front of him for that "C" at least, Phillips then Fisher. In no way is Spezza deserving of an "A" let alone the "C" in Ottawa. He's not anywhere near a capable leader at this point in his career and may very well never be.

I was wondering if anyone has thought about next year and the cap(assuming it does not change much). I have been playibg with the numbers, assuming we resign anton at 3.5 and folino??? pay cowen 1.5 let's say we get lucky and get filatov. even if we get rid of kelly, we are still over the cap. what do you all think
i think a lot of the reason spezza hasn't been producing alot might be because of the added pressure of trying to be picked for the olympic team. i think the olympics have been distracting him this year. he really wanted to make that team and he knows he won't because of the points hes putting up and i bet its been bugging him. after the team is picked and hes not on it there will be a weight lifted off of his shoulders.
look for a more relaxed spezza around the net in the second half of the season.

I used to live across the street from Spezza in Kanata - it was a condo village sort of idea... the condos were all very close together but privacy was never an issue for Spezza as the neighbors always left him alone. Also there is a high school close to near by as well I wouldn't suspect that people on Island park would are invading Spezza's privacy.

Well, I think first of all that Cowen's on an entry-level contract and won't cost 1.5m. We'll just have to ship off more guys (maybe Neil, hopefully Kovalev). Let's just hope the cap goes up a bit.

Trading Kelly, not bringing back/trading campoli/picard will give us 3.4mil more of cap space. The RFA/UFA cap hits all come off too, so take away 2.625 more with Regin, Shannon, Dono, Foligno, and Winchester all off the books. Round and say 6mil, and we have .874m of cap space now, so 6.9mil.
Raising Anton's cap hit to 3.5 would give us 5.9mil to sign cowen, re-sign regin, foligno, and winchester (and maybe shannon/dono). Seems like more than enough to me. We won't have much to throw at potential free agents, barring some trades, but it seems like more than enough to keep the young guys we want to keep around (Foligno, Regin, and Winchester should all be kept, IMO).

Yes he banked a shot off he goalie but how many times has he tried the exact same thing w/o success? Maybe 50 times?
Here's a true example of what you get from Spezza (those of you who PVR'd the game look this up) - at 17:30 of the 3rd he's in the offsensive zone on the right wing with two Carolina defenders on his left. He's got a clear shot at the goalie but instead of shooting (!!!) he tries a partial spin-o-rama-back pass through 2 Carolina defenders... and you can guess what happened. TURNOVER, AGAIN! These "high risk" attempts from offensive players are acceptable when they're converted at a reasonable rate, and for Spezza that's clearly not been the case.
This guy is earning HUGE cash and for what? 18 points after 29 games? Get over this man-crush already people!
Don't use the "not a fan" excuse either. I'm a HUGE Sens fan and am very pleased with how the team overall is progressing this year, but I am a realist and frankly the writing for Spezza has been on the wall for quite some time.

I work very hard at moderating the comments on this site but I can not control people's thoughts.
I am always very careful with what I let through and if you could read some of the comments that don't make it into these boards you would see how unbelievably ridiculous some people are.
You walk a fine line when you try to censor things on the internet and I really am doing my best..
I will continue to do everything I can to protect the readers of this site as well as the players on this hockey team from harmful attacks and rumours but it will never be an easy endeavour

I don't know what Cowan's contract looks like and quite frankly I dunno if he's actually singed. But I do know that an entry level contract can count for up to 1.5 million on the cap with all the bonuses!
Don't worry CHIRP, you've got a very good following of posters who actually talk hockey constructively. Agreed that there are plenty of unfounded rumours, but its the people who believe them that are upset, for the most part it is very obvious when silly rumours are posted. I for one find them entertaining and come to this site for it, doesn't mean i bite and believe that spezza will be dealt for getzlaf for example. Keep up the good work chirp and don't worry about one lost fan with no sense of humour.
