New Year's Eve Game Day

The Ottawa Senators will look to close 2009 on a positive note tonight when they play host to John Tavares and the New York Islanders.

It was one year ago to the day that John Tavares electrified Scotiabank Place as he led Team Canada to a thrilling win over the United States. Tonight the rookie sensation returns to the scene of the crime.

Meanwhile, the Senators are looking to bounce back from a tough loss last night to the Avs on home ice. Clouston is expected to make one line up change tonight meaning Erik Karlsson could draw back into the line up. Picard or Campoli would come out.

The decision will be made later today.

The forward combinations were juggled a little bit towards the end of the game last night and with the Senators not skating this morning we won't know how they'll line up till tonight.

Here's hoping Nick Foligno sees a little more ice time. Pascal Leclaire will get the start in goal.

Quick rumour sent my way late yesterday. It said that the Senators may be interested in Coyotes forward Scottie Upshall. Upshall is having a solid year in Phoenix with 13 goal and is currently making $1.5 mil a season and is scheduled to be an RFA at season's end.

Lastly, good luck to Team Canada tonight as they face off against their rivals from the United States in a showdown for top spot in the pool.

GO CANADA GO!

GO SENS GO!

Let's close out 2009 in style!

Would Phoenix even trade this guy though? There going to make the playoffs this year for sure, so I doubt they would want picks/prospects, and the only roster players we can afford to give are dmen and I think there pretty deep there.

That being said I would trade any one of Picard, Campoli or Lee for him.

SensChirp said...

Yea I really can't see why Phoenix would want to move him at this point.

I can definitely see why Ottawa would like the guy though. Terrific speed and very affordable.

Hopefully Murray isn't thinkin Volchenkov, cause really thats the only thing I could see Phoenix wanting.

I like the idea that Murray is at least after RFA's instead of UFA's, hopefully that means any trade he makes this year its not for a rental, but his trading record makes me nervous.

Thats what I said 3 days ago Scottie UPSHALL PLEASE !!!!!!

It would be Lee if it's going to happen. If he's available it's likely because he wants a bigger raise this off-season than the Coyotes are willing to provide. That or he just wants to get out of a place where nobody shows up for the games. Lots of potential reasons someone would want to leave PHX.

Ottawa needs another d-man first in my opinion. When healthy, I think Ottawa's forwards can compete as well with any other team in the league but it's the defence after Phillips, Volchie and Kuba that makes me start to worry.

What decision? If Picard doesn't sit out tonight, I'll eat the Power Ring. -.-

While I agree that the D needs to be looked at first, could you imagine a healthy forward group with Upshall in the mix as well? Dangerous.

DO NOT GIVE LEE. Lee, Cowen, Wiercoch, Karlsson = solid D corps for years when they develop.

Perhaps we do a package deal to get Z. Michalek?

12:52...why are deals like this always posted on this site? That would never happen.

I'm surprised with all the prognosticators and arm chair coaches, no one has suggested that Erik Karlsson should become a forward. We have a need for a top 6 forward, and he skates, handles the puck and has Alfie's vision, plus he lives with him!

Regardless of being an offensive d-man, if you can't play tough in your own zone, your a liability. And NHL teams are gonna make us pay whenever he's on the ice.

thoughts?

Anon 12:52pm you've got to be kidding right?

Do you really think PHX is going to give up the 3 best players in a 3 for 3 trade lol?

It's more like Lee + 2nd for Upshall. That deal will only happen by the way if PHX feels they have no way of retaining him. If they're giving him up it's to get something for a guy who won't be around next year.

Mueller is too good and too young for them to give up on him yet. Z. Michalek is likely untouchable unless A-Train is going back the other way.

It would be a decent trade for Michalek and Mueller for Volchenkov and Shannon.

PM said it best today on the team 1200 “Ottawa does not have any young and up coming top guns” and I am not the biggest fan of PM but this one he is right, we have to many AHL players that are very lucky to be playing in the NHL they are all working hard but surely they are not top guns. if Murray can pull off a deal an bring Upshall here I would surprizes he is not a deal making GM ofr Ottawa anyways he has been really good with that SJ team lol

Volchenkov and Lee for Michalek, Mueller and Upshall.

Dam this is ridiculous I just wrote a huge post on the last thread Chirp made about making a move for Michalek and Mueller. Then I read the new one and he is talking about Phoenix trade talks.

I have a really hard time Believing Upshall is going anywhere. THN has posted that Mueller is the one with the bad year and doesn't seem to be working with the system that is winning them games. I would imagine if Murray is talking to Pheniox, it is about Mueller. And how can you not think about the idea of putting the Michalek's together. I watched a interview on Milan talking about playing with his bro in the Olympics and he was ecstatic about it. I think having those boys together would be a huge boost for both of them. It is something to watch in the Olympics for sure.

I agree to get Michalek we would have to send Chanks their way. But maybe a package deal with Kuba. Kuba, Lee/Picard and Shannon/Chester or a pick. for Michalek and Mueller. Or maybe Kelly and Lee/Picard. Depends what Pheniox needs.

Anyways. There is no way this rumor is about Upshall. Phoenix is not working out with Mueller anymore. He is RFA at the end of the year. They might as well get something else for him now to help them with this great year they are having. And with the situation Ottawa is in with injury right now. Mueller could be the help up front we need for now.

Leclaire was HORRIBLE last night, it seems like he is always swimming around on the ice, and out of position.
He was the #1 reason we lost last night.
Heres hope for a better effort from our #1 guy.

Are people actually suggesting trading Volchenkov? He's our best defencemen and our defense really isn't very good! A trade of Michalek and Mueller for Shannon and Volchenkov doesn't work for either team.

JohnnyHolmes said...

He is also a UFA at the end of the season.

If he won't resign, they have to get something for him.

Anonymous said...

Not trading Volchenkov .. Unless he says he isnt going to resign period ...

Upshall at 1.5 million13 goals straight steal
Mueller wants out phx and isnt happy
Michalek sure his brothers good lol

all i think is that upshall would be a great pick up and if murray can pull this off i think ottawa is going in the right direction ... Another hard playing 2 way player that has a nose for the net and can score .. he could be top six we are looking for think of him if he played with kovie and fisher on the second

This team isn't good enough to win the Stanley Cup this year. No tinkering is going to make that much of a difference, that's why there is no point in trading for somebody to fill the Alfie/Spezza void - there's no trade out there that will do that this season.

The only trades that make sense for this team are ones that make the team better NEXT year and if that means sacrificing a playoff spot then so be it. If Volchenkov definitely won't sign a new contract then he should be shipped out, regardless of the damage that may do for the second half of this season. I don't want A-Train gone but if he isn't going to sign he needs to be gone before trade deadline day.

The trouble is the majority of the fans and the media wont accept a second consecutive non playoff year and that is handcuffing Melnyk, Murray and Clouston. Both BM and CC are probably worried about their jobs and if they, BM especially, feel that missing the playoffs means the sack then you can expect him to do anything radical whilst the team is ticking along at about .500. Nevermind the fans having faith in Murray, it's Melnyk's faith that's important.

cheechoo rules he has heart and is part of our best o line for the last 10 games.

I find it funny how many here mention Murray is worried about his job. His contract is up this summer and he is at least thinking about semi-retirement by now. I'm sure he wants to do well, but I really don't think he's worried. Anyone in any position that is, will do a crap job.

THE BLACK TERROR said...

I'd like to have Upshall, but like everyone else has said, he probably won't be moved unless PHX is absolutely sure he's not coming back next year. On top of this, PHX is right in the playoffs now, and they DESPERATELY need to get into the playoffs.

The only scenario where PHX moves an affordable quality forward while they're in the playoff hunt is if their team actually improves by making the trade. Throwing spare parts at them won't get it done, so you can forget about packaging up 3rd liners and AHL'ers. It would take quality to get Upshall out of PHX now, and the trade would likely have to pan out at least equal for both sides, if not slightly in favor of PHX. I'm not sure what Murray would be willing to sacrifice to bring him in, but I can pretty much guarantee that it would never be a guy like Volchenkov, so even mentioning his name is ridiculous.

It would probably take a guy like him though. Maybe Kuba? I can't really see what would make PHX want to trade though, they're in 4th place right now!

Do not sincerely believe in any of the talks mentioned in all the previous posts !!

Anton Volchenkov will resign with the Sens !! Murray knows that if he trades Volchie, he is writting his own ticket out of Ottawa to the farm back in Campbells Bay !!

This Upshall trade is not going to get done with Ottawa as the dancing partner !!

Sens have shown so far that they do have a lot of depth ,even with their 2 best franchise players out for a long stretch !!

Deal Or No Deal ??

Clearly No Deal !!

We seem to have depth in defensive prospects....Sorry guys. I know a lot of you are very imaginative with trades like Upshall for our scrap but the reality is? We need to be dealing with teams that are going nowhere and have salaries they are trying to dump. (Ex:Edmonton) If we want that coveted Dman, it will probably cost us a decent prospect and a pick.

So, assuming we are in the same position we are in today at the deadline, here is my proposition.....Brian Lee and San Jose's second pick for Denis Grebeshkov.

Here's why... Edmonton is floudering and Grebeshkov only signed a 1 year deal there rather than a long term deal. He's not happy there....Edmonton will probably just want some assets back for him instead of risk losing him to the KHL next year.

The Sens probably need to cut ties with Lee and add a sweetener (2nd pick) to get this done. This gives us a rugged Dman that is capable of playing in the top 4 and we have a good chance to re-sign since we are more competetive than Edmonton.

Win Win for both teams!

Anon 10:26.....I'd rather give that same offer but for Cogliano instead, a speedy 2-way 2nd liner would be ideal.

At this half way point I mush say I am very impressed with the new coach Cory Clouston, with all the key injuries this club had and having to play players like Cheechoo, as well with no real up coming players in our fram system and with no real help from managment he kept the club above 500. NICE work Cory
