A Few Rumours

Had a chance to speak with a contact this morning and he passed a few rumours my way. As always these are just rumours and speculation. Nothing posted below is 100%. Just thought I'd share a bit of what I'm hearing...

-There 's plenty of talk about Brian Lee lately. His demotion surprised a lot of people considering his improved play since the call up. Some are suggesting he had a bit of a falling out with the coaching staff in Ottawa. Columbus has an interest. Ottawa would love Filatov obviously but I don't know that the Jackets are ready to give up on him.

-Carolina, Dallas and Los Angeles scouts have all been following Ottawa as of late.

-The priorities for Bryan Murray include a top 4 defenceman and a forward who can play in their top six.

-Among the names believed to on Ottawa's radar; Teemu Selanne and Jussi Jokinen.

- Players believed to be on the trading block; Chris Kelly, Brian Lee, Alex Picard and Ryan Shannon

-There is talk Ottawa could potentially release a new third jersey next season. And yes, it would be the vintage design. This one seems like a longshot at this point but the contact mentioned Washington, Pittsburgh and Vancouver as teams that are also looking at new uniforms for next season.

Rumours folks. Just rumours...

In other Senators related news both Jared Cowen and Patrick Wiercioch have been named to the Team Canada's 36 man selection camp roster for the upcoming World Junior Tournament.

Jokinen could be a good snag, but Teemu?? I love the guy, used to be a big Jets fan, but this has got to be his last year playing hockey

SensChirp said...

Yea I get the sense Teemu could be moved at the deadline. Doesn't seem like a mid season pick up to me.

Nathan said...

Selanne!?

One would think it would take more than a few spare parts to acquire him. And given their recent play, i'd be hesitant to give up anyone on the "offered" list aside from Brian Lee.

Michalek-Spezza-Selanne
Alfredsson-Fisher-Kovalev

... that would be quite the top 2 lines though.

Anonymous said...

It would take a lot more than Brian Lee to get Filatov. Would be nice though.

Anonymous said...

I say we try and get Heatley out of San Jose, that guy is just lights out! Just imagine him with Spezza, they'd put up big numbers. Hahaha.

Anonymous said...

I dont think Murray can pull a deal like Filatov off, Our deals always work in favor of the teams we are dealing with. I think the Senators Head office starts these rumors to take us off track if Murray gets Filatov I will run around SB naked. not a pretty site

Iko said...

No offense SC but isn't every GM at all times trying to add a top6 FW and D that can play in the top4?

Anonymous said...

Let me get this straight, a lot of people are pissed that Brian Lee was demoted. So now, you are floating rumours that he had a falling out with the coaching staff.

This is classic National Enquirer material. He did not have a falling out. Murray wanted to go with Karlsson, plain and simple. Why give a young kid like Lee a bad rap for nothing. It might stick and hurt his career for nothing. This is not a harmless rumour.

I think Murray has been looking for a reason to trade Lee and Kelly. I think that he wants to dump all players that he did not bring into the organization.

That's why Melnyk should fire his ass before he causes more damage.

SensChirp said...

Iko,

Absolutely. Those are just the two spots Ottawa would obviously like to fill. Doesn't mean they would be able to do so.

As for the Lee thing, its been mentioned in a couple places. He was apparently seeing arguing with Clouston on the bench and didnt see much ice time in the third.

Then demoted the next day...

Friend of the Family said...

I'm hearing that the filatov deal will be announced at 3:30 today. Double checking with my inside guy to confirm if it's 3:30 est or pst. Will let everyone know as soon as I hear back.

Benjamin said...

I really don't think that Ottawa will get another third jersey so soon, BUT, that's not to say they won't get a Winter Classic jersey.

Toronto has been pushing for a Winter Classic, and there would be no other more logical option, than to play the Sens.

As for the trade news, I still believe it will end up being Frolov to the Sens, but trading for Jussi Joikenen makes tons of sense.

Corvo is on the IR, meaning the team could use someone to replace him. Joikenen is sick in the Shoot Outs, something that could really help Ottawa.

Picard, Shannon and a Draft Pick for either Frolov or Joikenen.

Anonymous said...

Lee doesn't deserve to be on this team, ship him out.

Cassie said...

I think last night, despite the loss, proved why Karlsson is up here over Lee.

I don't think it has anything to do with falling out or nothing. Plain and simple Karlsson controlled our lackluster PP for most of the night, even earning an assist. Karlsson looked good on the PP with Kuba.

But, no thanks to Teemu. I don't understand why a lot of Ottawa rumours involve(d) aging guys! Selanne, Jagr, Forsberg. No thanks. If we're going to trade away young prospects we better be getting young guys back!

Anonymous said...

the Sens blogger over on Hockeybuzz is reporting that Filatov and a minor leaguer would come to ottawa for a second in 2010 and winchester and lee:
http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog/Mark-Christopher/Remember-this-clown/121/24658

And ps. the Dany Heatley trade didn't look so bad last night at all? 2 2nd assist compared to Michalek's 2 goals? Hell if Cheechoo were playing on a line with Marleau and Joe Tho he'd have at least 20 points! Those guys just make Heatley look good and Michalek is playing awesome in the pressure role where alfy is his only consistent supplier!

hq said...

hehe SC is the jersey change a rumor too? or is that for sure? because they do need to change that third jersey bad.

i dont see merit in getting selanne or jokinen. makes sense for a playoff fix. but this team is in an unofficial mid-rebuild. however, i wont mind selanne, but still dont see merit in trading for him. jokinen, not sold, rather not. would much rather them get tuomo ruutu from carolina and have a line of the two ruutus absolutely running amok on ice. would be amazing.

one thing is for sure. Murray wont be able to trade shannon to anaheim lol. their coach hates small guys haha.

i think foligno got the same kind of benching last night in the third as Lee against the jackets.

Anonymous said...

Spezza could definetely use another real finisher again, not sure about Jokinen or Selanne though.

Carolina I could maybe see them looking at T. Ruutu (Hopefully), Dallas more than likely Burnstrum, LA maybe Moller?

Picard is actually starting to grow on me so hopefully he stays, although if we get some-one good thats going to be here for longer than a month or so I would be ok with it.

synthetek said...

Carolina is short a Dman(Corvo) Lee for Jokinen straight up.

MJ said...

I have sources of my own within the organization and what is being said about Lee is true. He did in fact have a falling out with Clouston and was sent down the next day. Clouston's cover story for the demotion was that he didn't like the way Lee was playing. So he didn't throw Lee under the bus on this one.

Anonymous said...

1:05,
don't run your mouth when you have NO idea what you're talking about. Brian Murray signed Chris Kelly to a four year contract extension a couple years back. If he so desperately wanted to get rid of all the players he didn't bring in, why didn't he do it then.

Anonymous said...

If it is true that the hurricanes are following the Senators and Murray can get a top six forward from them I would like to see Murray get Erik Cole.

I would like to see Lee and Kelly for Cole.

Anonymous said...

Campoli + kelly for Whitney
(campoli fills in for corvo and gets their back end faster)

Chris said...

Enough rumours about aging players like Selanne and Jagr, we've already got enough old forwards in the top 6 with Kovalev and Alfie.

Do we want half of our top 6 retiring within a few years ?

Anonymous said...

I believe Murray can get Filatov. Hitchcock and Filatov did not get along.

Spezza to Columbus?

If we were to get Filatov, would he not have to pass threw waivers in order to be on the roster this year?

Anonymous said...

no way spezzas going and no way we're going after kagirodov #2! theres no trade going to be announced at 3:30! dont make shit up! the sens are playing good and once leclaire is healthy again they;ll be fine!

Anonymous said...

Hey SC,

I think if there is any way we can trade for Ruutu that would be amaizing. But we would have to give up something good to get him and I don't think we have what Carolina wants. They will not part with him for Lee, Pickard, Shannon or Kelly...

Riaz

Anonymous said...

With Carolina's decline I'm wondering if they might be dangling Staal for a package. Or what about a straight up swap Staal for Spezza? Perhaps minor additions going from either side as well. I'd do it in a heart beat.

Spezza & Lee

For

Staal & 2nd (maybe an AHLer too)

tcharger said...

Hasn't Spezzas no trade clause kicked in already?

Benjamin said...

At this point, I would be willing to bank that Carolina would trade Ruutu, if it meant filling their lines better, and getting either a prospect or a draft pick.

Carolina is in damage control, they will likely write this year off, trade off some assets and look to shop in the off season.

If the Filatov rumors are true, I would be very happy. While the Sens have tons of promising D-Prospects, the only player in Binghamton that will make the roster next year will be Z. Smith on the fourth line (if at all).

Hax said...

The Lee/Clouston issue has been reported several other places. I think Clouston expects a lot from Lee (justified) and Lee is simply not pushing himself enough. The first few games back he was busting his ass but then softened up a bit - sending him down might be a great move if he comes back and maintains his edge next call up.

Hax,

There might not be another call up, he's been given a ton of chances to stay with this team, and every time he seems to just give up on himself, we need more than that. We've got guys who would kill for a spot on this team, and he just doesn't seem to be one of them. He seems to feel like he deserves this spot just for being with the organization for this long. He should take a lesson from Carkner.

synthetek said...

you should be smart enough, like the rest of us, to assume its not true and just ignore it. By posting and asking if its true, you are acknowledging the person who wrote it and fulfilling what he set out to do, which is provoke a response from us. The only way to get rid of people like that is to just ignore them, next time give it a shot

Anonymous said...

Karlsson is up because he's better than Campolli and plays that same role. Offensively inclined defensemen with a big shot from the point who can run the PP.

Lee is a capable puck mover with good footspeed. When he adds 10-15 on his 6'3 frame and improves his shot he'll be up here. He should be a big part of our future.

If Lee is upset he does kind of have a right to be. Karlsson is being given the silver spoon while Lee is being thumbed even though he's played far better hockey than Campolli or Karlsson thus far.

The reality is we need a threat to shoot from the point and Lee just isn't. Theres not really anybody else he can replace in the lineup right now except Picard if Picards game goes South on him.

ANON 4:52.

You didn't put much thinking into that one did you?

6 goals in 21 games averages out to 24 on the season. For a 19 year old playing in a defensive system. Wow...that is just horrible, definitely not worth Kelly or Winchester. LOL

george.schoenhofer said...

Filatov is a gifted player, but his head isn't screwed on right. Columbus had all kinds of trouble getting him to play in the AHL. They tried last year, sent him to Syracuse, he sulked the entire time there, and this year, when they wanted to send him back to Syracuse, he refused, apparently.

He's in the KHL this year, and unlikely to come back unless he can be guaranteed top 6 minutes. A huge risk. And not worth it, in my opinion.

Derek said...

Having both Patrick Weircioch and Jared Cowen being part of the 36 selected is great, especially if they can both make it. Bodes well for the team's future on defence.
Noticed that Weircioch is now listed at 6'5" 198lb. Cowen and Weircioch are the 2 tallest DMen on the team, both at 6'5". Wow!

Anonymous said...

6 goals in 21 games. On pace for about 22 goals, getting 3rd and 4th line minutes. Hes 19. Skill is off the charts.

I dont know this kids story that well. But it seems as though he has every intention on coming back. Hitchcock obviously didnt like him, and he has a history of being hard on rookies.

SM, your post was rediculous. And Id have to agree with OE.
A young goal scorer whos living up to his hype would go a long way for the future of this franchise.

anon 5:42.

I think your thinking they are over the cap due to there bonus potential pay. they are about 4.2 over the cap if they pay out their bonus fully to players. However, most likely Kane and Toews will get there bonus therefor putting them over the cap. But you are allowed to be over the cap due to bonus' up to (and i may be wrong on this number) 10% of the salary cap. At which point, it will count towards your salary cap the following season.

They also have a player named Radek Smolenak, who has a 425k bonus. who is in the minors. therefor will clearly not hit his bonus although still shows up on there cap because he could potentially if called up and played amazing.

Therefor, they are really around 3.775 over the cap if there bonus for kane and toews kick in (which they will)

Hope this helped.

Andrew said...

Anon at 5:42...it's a bonus cushion. Toews and Kane both have salaries of .850. If they achieve they can make at most 3.5 and 3.7 respectively. A team does not have to account for bonus achieved this year until other years because they have no way of knowing which they will achieve. I'm a little rusty on my knowledge of how it works but I can assure you that bonus' can be pushed to the next season.

SM- You have absolutely NO understanding of the word potential! Do you think that when a player is drafted he is in his prime?! No! It's called developing. Filatov is developing and so is Karlsson, a player who I remember you blasting in another post. You obviously know nothing about hockey, go watch football or something

The Filatov-Lee thing is being talked about in columbus as well. Heard them calling Lee a "real stud defenceman". Looks like it has legs, as they are very unsure Filatov will return at least under hitchcock. Filatov obviously has enormous potential, but is it worth trading for another russian malcontent who may never come back? Why give up on Lee now? He's finally showing some signs of life.

filatov would cost us far less than barker or seabrook.

Anonymous said...

SM, Filatov is tearing up the KHL with 5G, 5A for 10 pts, on pace for 90+ pts over 56 games. He's got lots of offensive potential and that's the reason why he was picked 6th overall out of 200+ players in 2008. And the NHL and KHL are at about the same level.

And he's said he wants to play in the NHL. He's in Europe now cuz he was sent down to the AHL. See the article below

http://blogcritics.org/sports/article/nikita-filatov-leaves-nhl-heads-back/

Just let him play his style and he'll put up big numbers, and Hitchcock didn't let him play his style in Columbus.

Do some research before you speak. It's that simple.

Anonymous said...

i don't think we need to go after seabrook. he'd cost too much and we already have potential #1 d-men coming up in cowen and wiercioch. and he's signed for another year and i just don't see the hawks actively shopping him this season.

barker would cost less and i think we could target him

Andrew said...

SM you act so sure that we can get Seabrook. YEAH RIGHT! They'd rather waive barker and Sopel than trade away a stud like Seabrook. Also, if the Sens do get Filatov and he turns out to be a bust, it's not like he has a big contract, so they can just get rid of him. This is low risk high reward. You really don't seem to understand what potential is man.

One more thing, to say he's a whiny fool like Heatley or a rebel like Emery is false. He decided that KHL is a better development option for him than AHL so Columbus agreed to loan him. He didn't go sign there, meaning he will be back.

dave Young said...

and would give us an offensive prospect!!

who do we having in the pipeline that is just a pure offensive player? Murray has done well to address the defence and the goaltending, but now we need a blue chip offensive prospect.

If filiatov can be had for as little as lee and a second and even winchester, it is for sure worth it. I like lee, I just dont see his place on this roster in the future, I think Karlsson and eventually Cowen represent VAST improvements over lee. With Kuba, Philips and Volchenkov locks, and picard (even though he plays brutal some nights) on pace for 40 points, where does lee fit in? as for Winchester, I like the kid, but its hard to argue Filiatov is not an upgrade.

That leaves the second round pick, which is carry over from San Jose. At this point it looks like a 60th overall. And if we can say we got Michalek Cheechoo and Filiatov for Heatley and Winchester Lee in a "no win" situation from the summer...

thats pretty unreal. Not to mention it would be interesting to see how he helps the second powerplay, and how he benefits from playing with kovalev. Think about it, your second line is Fisher-Kovalev-Filiatov. Fisher works for it, Kovalev sets it up and Filiatov finishes it. Just sayin. I think its wishful thinking, and isnt going to happen, but I think people are wrong to suggest its a bad move

SM you must meet a lot of idiots if you think everyone who disagrees with you is one. However you should be aware you've made a lot of baseless and ignorant claims. There is a reason why 95% of the backlash in this comment section is for you hero.

However I do think anyone on here can acknowledge a few things. Firstly that getting a player of Filatovs skill level is a very rare thing and secondly that acquiring him comes with a good deal of risk.

The fact that he is playing in the KHL over the AHL is a red flag. Regardless of whether his relationship with the CBJ is a good one or not last time I checked most NHL clubs aren't developing their prospects in the KHL.

Despite that he is a rare talent. We do have enough depth coming up the pipe to sacrifice Lee to get him.

I hold Lee in very high regard now now and I feel he has made large strides this year towards being a very good player at the NHL level. I am not particularly fond of giving up on him before he's at least 25-26 so we know what we've got. Pronger didn't truly flourish until that age and thats a common trend in the development of young defensemen. In 3-4 years we might be looking back at tossing away Lee as one of the biggest mistakes in franchise history - if we do it.

The fact is SM we can't deny getting Filatov is a risk, but you can't deny the fact that he is a great hockey player with massive potential. Honestly with the depth the Sens have on D right now its very tempting to try and get Filatov if it's possible - which once again I doubt it is.

I also want to say that this trade result will be unpredictable. When you are dealing with potential its difficult to gauge how things will work out. It doesn't matter how much hockey knowledge we have. SM, you talking about it like you're somehow sure of how it would work out it advance just displays your ignorance.

Filatov leaves the door open to staying in Russia, which makes me think he might be staying “home”. He even says it was his idea to go back. I would not want to pay too much for a player who is not 100% sure he wants to play in the NHL, even if there is potential:

" I’m practically sure that I will come back, but not to the hundred percent. Now I don’t want to claim anything. The first time I left for the USA I didn’t thought to return, especially so quickly. Thus I won’t say anything about the next season."

"- Who had the idea to send you to the KHL?
- It was an idea of mine. I want to play, and to play a lot. And I also wanted to get into team practice exactly with CSKA. I haven’t thought a lot to other variants, CSKA is my home and I spent there 13 years. Here I know everyone and thus this variant is the best one. It was easy to get around here and I started to play as soon as I arrived."

pegsensfan,

"I’m practically sure that I will come back, but not to the hundred percent" (see above post)

That does not sound to me like "he knows its the best league in the world and that is where he wants to be"

And going to the KHL to "protect himself" might make sense for survival, but he won't learn to play against bigger and stronger players there.

I really think the sens should trade volchenkov + Lee and a pick for Barker + Byfuglien and or Sharp

just make sense..

im not saying it will benefit him i was just saying the theory behind it.

I bet his relationship with hitchcock will hinder his decision to come back or not.

And well why would he want to come back and play for hitchcock when he can make triple playing the offensive game that he thrives on.

I wonder if playing with Kovalev would entice Filatov any. Or vice versa. If there's potential there for Kovie to get more motivated and Filatov to get exited then a Filatov-Fisher-Kovalev line would be fantastic.

The guy's only 19 so I'm not going to get too excited either way, but who knows?

would love to see some new third jerseys. No offense to the people that bought the "SENS" jersey but i think the "SENS" part kills the whole jerey because the jersey is nice other than that "SENS" part.

I heard that the Filatov deal is virtually done and it's not going to be overly expensive. I heard that they wnat a center prospect and a draft pick.

I would like Filatov as much as the next guy
and let us even assume he has fallen out with the BJs
Regardless, he is still a prospect and will be dealt with that value
I think at best we could field a poor offer unless there is a specific player here they want that we can part with
Teams do get desperate though, so you never know

2:43, who is your scource?

From a credible site:

Vancouver and Pittsburgh are looking at new jerseys!

A little validity to the Ottawa rumor! I hope its barberpole!

Hey anon 2:43, where did you hear that Filatov to Ottawa deal is done?

Most experts (like McGuire and Milbury) agree that the Top 5 KHL teams are good enough to make the NHL Playoffs, but it's doubtful that any KHL team would finish in the top 3 of either conference.

i am closely related to this sition ( no bullshit) and it is absolutely hilarious to see you people think ottawa could get Filatov. He is far better than any peice we can offer at fair trade, plus all his potential. He wil be a future Kovalchuk. So no, ottawa will not get Filatov, i am from Columbus. i have heard however that ottawa are serious about acquiring callaham and they may be close to a deal. Thanks for your time. Regards,

Paul Blanchman

Nothing new on the Hawks front I'm watching the press conference and nothing about trading players.

Why would we want another player that just runs off to Russia when things dont go there way. Lets get some guys that will bleed for the NHL and play their hearts out. I will take heart over skill anyday!!!

Hey SC
Where's todays update?
Love reading em!

Nick Foligno scratched...wtf he's one of our younger players and quite the hard worker too.

"LIttle Napoleon" there better have a deep playoff run to justify this heavy-handedness.

Hey Paul Blanchman, try using spellcheck if you want anyone to take you cereaslee! LOL

Anon 2:18...so what you are saying is that you would make a trade that would make our d-corps worse and not as deep? How does that deal make sense? The Sens need to add to their core of d-men not substract ONE of the bright spots they have in Volch and substitute him with a "could be" d-man in Barker...no sense at all.

Calling Milbury an expert is almost as dumb as calling the leafs a good team, see Yashin trade and repeated stupid comments by him..

LOL @ Paul Blanchman.

Two things;
1. If the CBJ move Filatov it will only be because the organization is not fond of him and the relationship is damaged beyond repair. There is no way they are moving a guy his age and with his talent unless things have gone bad between them.

2. Under the circumstance that the relationship has fallen apart between Filatov and the CBJ then the Jackets will not be dealing from a position of strength. That means Ottawa would indeed have enough to make a credible offer. What that would be is not worth speculating on.

Oh lets add a 3rd for fun.

People who have real information. Don't preface said information with "seriously no bullshit" lol.

Kelly is a handy player who would be valued, but the other guys you listed as being "on the block" are just spare parts. It's hard to see how we could get much value for any of them. We aren't in much of a position to take a big salary dump from anyone either, further hurting the odds of a trade...
