(UPDATE 3:37 PM)- Here is a clip of "The Shift". Kovalev, Fisher and Foligno dominate the Penguins and hold the puck for a full 1:17 prior to the Carkner goal. Unreal.
Ottawa was down a few bodies at practice today. Alex Kovalev has left and is on his way to Russia to attend the funeral of his wife's mother. Once again, Alfredsson is not practicing. Its pretty clear Alfie is fighting some type of injury the last little while but it isn't serious enough to keep him out of the line up.
Shean Donovan was also absent at practice. There's no word on his condition yet but he did leave the game last night with a knee injury. His status is still unknown. Not sure if its the real Ian Mendes on Twitter but if it is he posted the following...
Cory Clouston on Shean Donovan injury - "It looks pretty serious. We're not sure what extent - whether it's long term or real long term."
Donovan will have an MRI today at which point they'll know more about his status.
Other than that its a pretty quiet day on the Senators front. A couple of you have asked but it doesnt appear as though theres anything new on the Hawks front. Chicago really isn't in any hurry to make a deal and can wait till the deadline if they choose to.
Bob McKenzie seems to think that Brent Sopel is one of the prime candidates to be moved if Chicago is forced to do something.

When will Volchenkov be back?
Senschirp thanks for the update. I hope the Donovan injury as serious as they think. Any modifications to the lines for practice today. Who will play with Fisher and Foligno tomorrow night? Thank you
Why is no one talking about the dirty hit on "Chum"? Cook should be punished for that dirty knee.
Bob must read my posts at GMhockey re: Sopel
If we can limit a star lineup like that of Pittsburgh to 2 goals without A-Train and play like we did last night, I'm not sure we need to acquire another d-man. And we likely have two blue-chip prospects in Cowen and Karlsson coming in next season so our blueline is looking bright.
Man, you think Pickard is bad, try Sopel!
Take this with a grain of salt but someone posted on Mark Christopher's blog on Hockeybuzz that he had insight that the potential deal was Kelly, Shannon and a 3rd rounder for Cam Barker...
syy89...you have got to be kidding me? Good hockey teams build from the net out and a good d-corps wins hockey games. Look at all the teams the Sens have had success with and I'll bet that the d-corps was in the top 5 in the league. Yes they played well last night as a group BUT man they need another quality d-man if they are going to do anything substantial. I'll give credit where and when it is due and yes they deserved credit last night but over the course of the year to this point and beyond right now they do not have a group back there that can consistently show up and play like that on a regular basis.
the was posted on tsn by a staff member regarding "Chum" http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=299098 , and yes that was a dirty hit and I am really starting to get pissed of with the officiating whenever the SENS are playing.
Doesn't make sense. Hawks can't take salary back for the players they must move. So, they would not want Kelly.
Matt 1:10pm, the Hockbuzzy blog stated,
Word is Chicago set to move a dman and Murray is in the middle of it. Barker for Picard/Shannon/3rd rounddraft pick is the rumor. Chicago has to move salary in order to sign there big three(Kane/Toews/Keith)
not Kelly
Anon 1:55pm, like any rumor taken with a grain of salt. If true however, that will helps us.
I dont know about that but I would do it in a heartbeat. Get Barker in here!! He is worth 3 of our D's combined!
Oh and why are people saying Cooke should be punished? was a clean hit, they basically hit each other straight on, Donovan tried to move and boom, Cokke didnt move a step. Its basically dono's own fault, dont try and side step a check, either take it or run the punk over, isnt cooke like 5'8???
Anyways no penalty was the right call.
cook should be punished cause it was a knee on knee where he stiffened up his knee to hit and cause more damage and pain. He's had a history of knee an knee hits. Repeat offender.
^ Thats crap he went after him and had him lined up. It was a cheap shot. We are just lucky that Orpick was out last night he is just as bad with his hits from behind.
ANON 2:44, I don't think we watched the same game.. .cooke was out there being dirty for a while as they were getting fed at that point... I have to say the pass to Dono was a suici in the worst way and as suici's usually go someone got hurt.. HOWEVER, no respect from Cooke, he goes in and DOES go knee to knee, maybe it was because he was trying to get out of the way but either way knee to knee, nothing else to say. No penalty is a brutal call and the officiating Ottawa gets at home is laughable at best, forget the road, we can't even get a good homer call.
That Cooke hit on Donovan looked like knee on knee to me, a dirty play 100%. At the very least a penalty should have been called.
I was at the game and didn't really get a good look at the hit.
Anyone know if there's a video of it somewhere?
good game last night, lets hope they keep it up this time. Hopefully he breaks up the spezza line cause spezza hasnt done anything with alffy and michalek in a while.

to syy89. yeah thats smart, because we have 1 good game against a depleted pens lineup we dont need to make any changes. I loved our game last night but before making a judgment on whether this team has pulled it together lets wait to see if they can string a couple of wins and make sure yesterday was no fluke.
chirp if you havent seen the hit..my assessment is that it was not dirty. Cooke just tried to lay out donovan and both knees collided, but he didnt take out donovans knee on purpose. The people crying for justice are being way too biased.
kinda like when chris neil layed out cleanly chris drury a couple years back and buffalo fans were crying for a suspension.
Knee-on-Knee hits are rarely intentional. It looked pretty similar to the Ovechkin on Gonchar hit. It was a little bit dirty. At that time of the game with that score in the game it was lame of Cooke not to just let Donovan have a pass there. That was what irked me about it. Time of the game, score of the game. He didn't need to stay on that line which was clearly going to be an awkward hit. Regardless of whether he wanted a knee on knee hit or not.

SC, have you heard any rumbling about the SENS/Murray's possible interest in Filatov if he becomes available?
I hope Ottawa gets a guy like barker, with volchie coming back, we would have a good d-core
Any truth to the Chicago/Ottawa trade rumours?
Barker for Picard, Shannon and a 3rd?
If Chicago's willing to trade a solid dman for a couple of scrubs and a third round pick, Murray would do it in a heartbeat. What I hope he doesn't do is mortgage our future by trading away high picks or prospects. We don't have anywhere near the level of talent up front to be a contender. Murray should look to be a seller this year and try to acquire some solid offensive prospects. Our D-core will be very good in a couple of years.
Info on Donovan based on info from the Ottawa Sun:
Sens Lose Donovan To MCL Injury
"The Senators will also be without fourth-line winger Shean Donovan tomorrow and maybe for the rest of the season. He sustained a right knee injury on a knee-on-knee hit by Pittsburgh’s Matt Cooke. The exact extent of the injury won’t be known until more tests are completed today, but Senators general manager Bryan Murray said it was serious.
“It’s his MCL (medial collateral ligament) for sure and he’s having an MRI to see if it’s the ACL (anterior cruciate ligament), too. We won’t know until tomorrow,” said Murray.
He contacted NHL executive vice-president of hockey operations Colin Campbell to discuss the hit, but Murray said he didn’t expect there would a suspension coming for Cooke.
“If it was any other player, you wouldn’t say anything, but it’s happened several times,” said Murray of Cooke.
The NHL really does not care about injuries to players, until it becomes a monetary problem. If a fourth/fifth line player gets maimed for life, they do not care, because it does not affect their bottom line. The NHL only cares about making money, and anything that will affect them making money. In many ways, they *WANT* to see injuries to minor players as that will increase the money coming in to their er marginal U.S. teams
This might be a little early to think of Free Agency, but after watching the Habs VS Caps game
how about going after a guy like Tomas Plekanec, not to sure what he will demand when he gets on the market but he might be a guy to look at.
What are your thoughts Chirp.
Anon 10:01:
Plekanec is a soft streaky player. One year on, one year off, and no playoff value whatsoever.
He's having a contract year points wise and this will no doubt up his value but in my books he's somewhat of a Brendan Morrison or a Steve Bernier over valued player.
And I don't like the idea of another Hab player coming to Ottawa...
