HUGE CHARACTER WIN!

Ottawa battled back with two third period goals and took a huge two points against one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference.

Mike Fisher played hero again for the Senators, on a night where he looked like the Sens just didn't have it through two periods.

They came out flying in the third and just put everything on net. The results speak for themselves.

The one minus from this one is obviously the fluke injury to Pascal Leclaire. He was hit by a puck on the bench in the second period and had to leave. No update on his status yet.

Just a MASSIVE WIN for the Senators though. Their fourth win in five on the homestand.

GO SENS GO!!

Until tomorrow....

hopefully its just a few teeth for snoopy. thats what it seemed like too. although you never know. he seemed woozy a little bit too. but then who wouldnt look woozy.

btw. the senators has a 19-5 lead in takeaways against washington. just WOW. against a team like the caps. that is just eye and mouth opening. super sweet.

although. spezza definitely is in a slump or is playing hurt. or is just plain not having chemistry with alfie and michalek.

By the looks of it, Leclaire's got a broken jaw and is missing a few chicklets.

fisher is ottawa's alternate-captain-clutch. he got us two powerplays also. just wow.

What's especially impressive is that they weren't deflated after the way Washington's third goal went in.

Last year, and even the year before that, you always got the feeling that if they had to deal with any adversity, especially giving up a goal on a horrendous giveaway, they would just fold the tent.

I thought Regin looked solid tonight - even when he doesn't score, he never seems to hurt the team. He is a smart player and skates well.

It was also refreshing to actually notice Shannon tonight - his best attribute is obviously his speed, but you haven't noticed it at all this year - until tonight. He also had excellent puck retrieval and worked hard along the boards.

Great win tonight - the kind of character win that would have been a pipe dream the past couple of years.

Go Sens!

What... a... freakin...COMEBACK!!!

Philips: Solid check on AO, great pinch and good job putting the puck to the front of the net where Fisher continues the magic...

Great game by Regin, Shannon and Winchester. Amazing game from Picard and Kuba. Carkner and Lee were solid as well.

Hope Leclair is ok. Can anyone confirm if its a broken jaw? And let's hope Spezza figures out what his deal is. It really can't get any worse..

Hey! Anyone remember when we were on top of the Northeast last??

Mat said...

If you look closely, Leclair was texting and posting on SC's live blog when he got hit!

I hope you feel bad SC!

;)

What the hell was Leclaire thinking?

wow, great effort. And i love that we have kuba back on his game. That guy can be the difference between a win and a lost even if you dont notice him. Great defensively lately and 8 points in his last 3 games!!!!!!

before the season is over, I'm predicting a highlight reel goal for Neil that will make the top 10 list at the end of the season. The guy has decent hands and he's pulled some sweet moves but just couldn't find the back of the net.

I also think Ruutu has good vision on the ice and decent hands so I would give him another shot at one of the two top lines.

Now what about Michalek screening the goalie AGAIN tonight. Finally a senator that gets it!!! It would be fair to credit him with at least 4 or 5 more assists over the last few games.

Spensar said...

Ditto on the game comments.

Spezza is a hurting unit right now. Senschirp, if you get any news about his back let us know. Watching him his back looks really tight at times and he has NO quickness out there.

The Caps first goal started with him being so slow picking up a drop pass that the Caps got it and went up the ice and scored. He is not a healthy dude right now.

Fisher reminds me of the episode of Seinfeld where George and Elaine stop having sex. This guy is playing as comfortable as I've ever seen him play.

FISHER FOR TEAM CANADA

SBP said...

I'd love for Fisher to be on Team Canada, but I think Stevie Y is taking Shane Doan on that 4th line.

3rd period team. However we did play ok in the first getting a goal in early, we just fell apart come second. But the team did a 360 and came back for a fight.

Shannon - First time he has come alive. The guy can SKATE! He is fast, good along the board and has heart.

Winchester - not mentioned much, but recieved a well deserved assist, and man can he skate with heart too. It's like he wants it bad and always shows up!!

Fisher - never one to dissapoint - although he was dead until the 3rd he pulled it together and came through for a game winning AMAZING goal.

No goal Spezza - He has oppertunites, but he is just lacking the heart lately. Not to sure what is going on, but he is not taking shots when he should, constant turn overs, and not winning as many face-offs as he used to

Neil - CAN HE HIT! He stood strong and proud and shut ovechkin DOWN! Not only was he hitting him, and making sure to consitently play hard on the boards, but he is handling the puck so much better. Shooting (HELL HE HAS MORE GOALS THAN SPEZZA - oh wait thats the whole team)

Kovi- Vol - Dono - you are missed when we get you back. Watch out!
and there was a girl there tonight who announced the sens - oooh yah.

SBP...this is sort of a joke, but honestly does Shane Doan have some blackmail material on Hockey Canada? He's okay, but its like he's a given for any Team Canada, i don't get it.

great coaching by clouston tonight. the first two lines were slow tonight to start. tried switching spezza for fish didnt work. so he moves fisher between regin and shannon and the were flying. once that line got going and creating chances the momentum shifted huge in ottawas favor and all 4 lines were going.

1st place in the northeast go sens go!!!!!
eat it habs fans

notice noone complaining about fish's salary...this is y were paying him 4.5 mil...keep it up, hel hav to b on team canada, will get more weekly stars etc.

ps. notice that even haters hattrick cudnt get him on the list this week...but kuba will b on next weeks
GUARANTEED

11:18,
the team did a 180 in the third not a 360. if they did a 360 they would have just spun around and headed in the same direction

I understand that Spezza has not been scoring, as well he's played like shit for the past 2 or 3 games now. However before that in the first 16 games, he had been playing amazing. Not outstanding points wise, but you could see the effort, and playing D Killing penalty's not making stupid giveaways. Let's not forget about that. He'll get his game going eventually, not worried one bit. This is where the depth that the Sens aquired in the offseason shows off as it has.

Anonymous said...

SC will Mike Brodeur get called up?

mike said...

Even though he seems to have this team clicking, ANOTHER 2 MANY MEN PENALTY - are you fucking kidding clouston!?!?

My god, get your bench organized...

Good game though, showed character and as much as I hate Picard defensively as he is a turnover machine, he seems to be contributing quite well offensively...

Cassie said...

I wouldn't be too worried about Spezza yet.

Sure he's on pace for, like, 4 goals but he's also on pace for 52 assists. If he's going to have a bad year due to injury or whatever seems to be bothering him, 52 assists isn't something to shake a stick at.

:P

Cassie said...

And to add...

Spezza only had 1 goal through 15 games in 2006-2007. He went on to have his second best year that year and be tied for the lead in playoff scoring.

;)

Anonymous said...

Great win last night! Spezza must be hurting. He is weak on the puck, get's it taken away so easily, and he had no jump. Can we stop taking too many men on ice penalties, please!

Jugger said...

Apparently, Leclaire needs some dental work done?

Anonymous said...

good to see us getting in the dirty areas, all four goals coming from having traffic in front

SBP said...

I don't get why Doan is either, save for the fact he plays at the Worlds every year and is given the "C". He's had a so-so start to the season, but I'm guessing his loyalty is a factor. The media always include him in their picks.

Anonymous said...

Mike @ 1:59, I totally agree. I was watching the game last night and was going to bring up the same issue. It seems like we pick up at least 1 too many men penalty per game! This is completely unacceptable, as this is something that should hap-hazzardly happen maybe every 5 or 6 games or so. Dumb bench penalties like this in close games such as last night can completely break your back, and it seems like we are rolling the dice far too often.

JRMcPeeWee said...

Great game, the second period was terrible, but the 3rd made up for it.
Spezza can't but a goal but he will get his touch soon.

Anonymous said...

ok

now everyone take a deep breath

remember hiw much you are supporting the team and so ecstatic now

now if we hit a sliding streak and lose a few - lets not jump off the bandwagon!

Its our team through thick and thin - so lets enjoy the thick of it now and stick with them when times are thin!

Anonymous said...

About the Barker deal. . I don't think we should get rid of Picard and Shannon. If we dump anyone, it should be Campoli and Foligno.

nicely played Mat.

Wish the playoffs started today, Sens are playing like a good playoff team, everybody contibuting.......

Fast line rotation strategies always create the risk of a TMM penalty. The question becomes: is the risk worth it? Quite obviously the answer is yes.

Anonymous said...

Only Leclaire can get injured NOT playing. Unfortunately, Elliott looked shaky, often out of position with awful rebounds.

Good thing the third period was excellent or a lot of people here would be jumping off the bandwagon (again). Horrible 2 periods.

Hopefully the third period is a sign of thing to come.

the thing that has impressed me the most over this winning streak is how strong our forecheck/cycle has been. earlier in the season even when we won a game we were having a hard time generatin any sustained pressure in the offensive end. now that seems like all we do. which is awesome.

From the Sens twitter feed : Senators recall on emergency basis goaltender Mike Brodeur from Binghamton (AHL). Update on Leclaire following practice.

I think Spezza needs to try Kelly's skates... It worked for Alfy :P
