Back on Top

Certainly wasn't the prettiest game to watch but a very important two points for the Senators tonight against the Columbus Bluejackets. The win helps the Senators regain top spot in the Northeast division heading into their game on Saturday against the Bruins.

Nick Foligno scored on the power play late in the third period to give the Senators a one goal lead they would not relinquish.

Jesse Winchester had a two point night and was solid at both ends of the ice. Had a few big hits (6 in total) and was strong on the puck. A solid night from role players like Ruutu, Winchester, Foligno and Cheechoo had a lot to do with tonight's win.

Ottawa welcomed Alex Kovalev back to the line up tonight and I thought he was one of the best players on the ice. His puck control was phenomenal and actually led to Jason Spezza's second goal of the season.

Brian Elliott was obviously the first star of this game in my books. He had 32 saves and bailed out the Sens on multiple occasions. He certainly looks capable of carrying the mail for the next few weeks.

Rick Nash had a decent game for the Jackets but was there any doubt he'd be named Pierre's Monster of the game? As soon as I saw the look on Pierre's face as he stood beside Nash on the bench, I knew Mr. McGuire had made his choice.

Until tomorrow...

If anyone can arrange to have Pierre McGuire drawn and quartered in the town square, I'll attend. At least 5 times he said "now if Kovalev could only do that 2 or 3 times a game he'd be worthwhile." He's a douche.

i thought finally PM mancrush on star players was not showing for tonight since he was major praising the senators. but come the third period. it was all Nash Nash Nash. so much so that me might as well name the Columbus Blue Jackets: RICK NASH'S BLUE JACKETS. as far as I can see, Columbus's top player could not win them the game, while our top players and our role players won us the game. end of story. PM can shove that monster up his ass now. Please and Thank you. and yes he can shove it half up for praising the sens for some of the game. just sayin'.

SC: didnt get to watch the first period. but did something happen to Regin? I could only count three ottawa centremen.

McGuire was on Nash's dick the whole game.

big game for Brian Elliott! Winchester looked great too. Also, Chris Kelly has been one of our best players over the past few games.

WOW NASH WAS A MONSTER TONIGHT

G=0 A=0 +/- 0

Pierre you make my brain hurt
what a dbag

Elliot is the best backup in the league right now
also nice to have kovalev back and spezza moving his feet and shooting more
keep it going sens 5 pts out of first with 2 games in hand

Pierre's panties were soaking for Nash.

TSN as a whole is horrid this season, i think every powerplay Ottawa had, first thing they mentioned was Nash possibly scoring shorthanded, and on Sportcentre they make a point of showing Ruutu getting away with a penalty and the Columbus guy getting the retaliation penalty(implying Ottawa gets all the calls) BRUTAL, thank god they have James Duffy or else it would be like watching Leafs TV.

Am I to believe Chanks and Fish will be back for the Bruins game on Saturday?

Is it not a total bummer that Chris Neil won't be playing for the Sharks game. Neil was going to smash Heater if he got the chance and you know it. Not to mention just running guys all over the ice all game long.

Having Carkner join the team, made the team tougher. But he can't just spend his shift running guys. Ruutu needs to step it up(he had a great hit tonight) and guys like Chester and Folingo. All the more reason why we need Fish and Chanks back.

guys, Pierre does this every game. Usually every Philly game he only talks about Pronger and Richards, in every Hurricanes game he only talks about Ward, in every Habs game it's usually Price, and so on. Pierre is nauseating when he just focuses on ONE player for the entire game.

Hax said...

I couldn't hate McGuire more than I already do, but we (ChirpArmy) have a bigger concern. Well, those of us that are able to attend home games - but the out-of-town chirpheads can help to.

We all need to email feedback@scotiabankplace.com and complain about their new "idea" of showing Coach's Corner during the 1st intermission of Saturday games. If anyone's been at a Saturday game this season, you'll know how PAINFUL this is. To listen to Grapes rave about the leaves, completely ignore the fact that the Sens are playing on CBC as well and even go so far as to rave about Heatley for team Canada. Cherry is the ultimate douchebag and an "out of the closet" laughs fan. Having his image and voice in "our barn" is horrible.

I contacted SBP and was told they're "trying it out" and will likely pull it if enough fans complain - so eveyone take a minute and drop an email off to them.

Go Sens Go

Harry - I hear you about Heatley - but don't forget he's in Edmonton Friday night. Hoping that game is on somewhere in Ottawa so we can watch the fans boo him and (hopefully) somebody fill him in.

And Dec 1st - That would be a perfect game for Ruutu or Winnie (who the heck is "Chester") to play a Neil-esque game.

Nice to get the win tonight, it was more or less an even affair, with Mason giving up a bit of a softie. Ottawa seemed to be doing their best New Jeresy imitation, the only difference being the number of penalties taken by the Sens. While the Zebra's have made some questionable calls or non calls against the Sens. Ottawa still seems to be taking way to many legitimate obstruction calls/selfish penalties. Clouston and company have to start holding some of these players accountable, in the next couple of weeks the Sens shedule, isn't going to give the team enough rest, if they're killing 5 penalties a night.

Any news chirp on Alfie? Is he playing injured? He just doesn't seem to be the player he's been in the past. Maybe, it's from all the time on the PK this season.

Mat said...

F&%k anyone who says this team has no character!

This team is hard core battling through injuries, a brutal schedule, shit calls by the refs and players are stepping up right left and centre!

For a team that was pinned as a fringe team right from the get go, that's some pretty inspired hockey we're getting!

What doesn't kill you will only get you stronger.

Go Sens!

kovie needs to play with speeza if not on the first line at least the power play .. put alfie at the point with kuba ...go sens go

Dave Young said...

Mikep, he is 36 dude, he plays the most and the hardest of all our forwards. And still leads the team in points.

Speaking of 36 year olds. Alex Kovalev was a magician tonight, even without Fisher. I think that the last few games he has played exceptionally well, and is a threat everytime he is on the ice. I know some people werent crazy with the signing, but its only two years, and he has looked like he is really coming around.

Also, on the replay of the foligno goal... it looked like he should have gotten a second assist.. but they gave it to the camper. Anyone else see that?

glad to see some positive comments around here. once we get healthy watch out, right?

Oh... and F&$k Pierre McGuire!

Aside from his cock gobbling on Rick Nash, PM was actually pretty decent with Ottawa. One point he said is that Ottawa now finally has a lot of heart, and aside from 1 or 2 games this year, they have been battling hard and not relying on the skill that they once had...cant disagree with PM there.

thepez said...

Is it just me or does Jesse Winchester look like a young Mike Fisher? Ever since he has been put back in the lineup he looks very confident with the puck and he is throwing his weight around. I really think that if the Sens give Winchester a couple of years to develop and we might have something special.

doug said...

thepez, it's just you.

Anonymous said...

To think that only a few weeks ago, people were saying we should trade Winchester away. :)

Good game by the Sens tonight! PM was right that they have more heart and determination. It's also nice to see that we're getting scoring from everyone this year. Maybe we can finally put the whole "secondary scoring" chestnut to rest. :)

As for PM overly praising Rick Nash, I've learned to tune him out when he goes off on ridiculous tangents like that. Then again, I've learned to tune out most people I find annoying lol. Sure, Nash did put on a good show with some of the moves he made, but he was really a one-man army for Columbus tonight. The rest of his team looked disinterested, and you could tell Hitchcock was not pleased about it.

Anonymous said...

Nash is amazing though.. After watching him play... He would rank in the tope 5 in the league. He actually has it all

Jeremie said...

It was great to see the Sens pick up another home win. After the first period watching the reffing, I thought here we go again, but thankfully that got better as the game went on. I would really like cheechoo to get another shot at the top two lines, but obviously thats not up to me. I guess it's all good as long as the sens keep winning. It just seems like a waste of cheechoo's contract for what he's known as. I though he looked a little deflated tonight... Is he getting discouraged perhaps? I just don't feel Clouston's given him a chance.

On another note, I am getting tired of seeing the strategy being used by the Sens on the PP. Dump it in, don't put any pressure, let the other team get it and fire it down ice. Wash, rince, repeat. No wonder they can't set up in the offensive zone like that. They also use it a little more than I'd like 5 on 5.

What do you think SensChirp?

Anonymous said...

Too bad Rick Nash is one of the most inconsistent star players in the league...

Anonymous said...

THEPEZ,

Winchester is a career 4th liner at best, he has been playing ok at times but has a TON of work to do...

He made some good plays tonight.

Cam said...

spez clappers are key. screw PM hes a tooooool. Good win boys ellitott is the man, keep it up!!!

I agree that PM gets annoying at times but on the whole I thought he was better tonite - he was right on about Nash being dominant - he controlled the puck all nite and the only reason the game was close was that Hitch shortened his bench early and Nash seemed to out there half the game - as for no points, it's not his fault that his linemates are Vermette and Umberger

Kovie was also formidable but again no love when it comes to goals - he came off the boards and got into the slot to generate great scoring chances and really contributed to Spezza's goal - he even back-checked and helped break up a 3 on 2 - gasp!!

But Eliot had to be Ottawa's best player - really solid in nets and came up with key saves at critical moments - the kind of goal-tending that lets teams play with confidence and be willing to take offensive risks - great start for him

The game against Boston should be a lot of fun - hopefully Volchenkov and Fisher will be back and Ottawa will be able to show their true strength and character - Imagine - Ottawa's identity being that of a hard working team with grit and heart - Yahoo - Go Ontario's Team!!

Rick Nash is phenomenal though..... didn't pot any goals but he is dominant.

and save the jokes I am a die hard sens fan

hey SC. the score in their highlights of the ottawa-columbus game, keeps showing clips of the sens having a closed door meeting yesterday. Didn't see any mention of it on your blog post for the Game Day. Any idea why they had a closed door meeting? was refereeing possibly the main topic?

also, I didnt get to watch the first period, but i could not spot Regin for both the 2nd and 3rd periods and his TOI was only 4:47. did he get injured?

Pierre McGuire likes talking just to hear himself talk, its ok to have a bit of silence or maybe even let gord miller talk!

I agree with Jeremie, dumping it in on the PP and having no one chase it kinda is ridiculous, why do we have Spezz, Alfie, Kuba on there for?!?!?!

Bring it in, halfway down the boards, stop and pass it back to the point, damn its not hard.

So how does this work, Spezz scores with the xtra man on the ice, is that a PP goal?

The one shift Spezza and Alfie had with Kovalev they were magic. I woudln't mind seeing that again as long as we have enough skill left to help keep Fisher going.

Despite PM doing what he always does. Rick Nash was very good last night. He was easily the best player on the ice. I would put him in the top 5 players in the league in terms of being able to protect the puck and create something out of nothing using his size and skill. Definetely a true power forward. Just reminds me of how funny it was when the TSN article called Latendresse a power foward when discussing his trade lol.

Oh also, we should be thanking Nash for at least taking out one of the officials. Too bad we couldn't get the other one too.

I SAw that look .. It was before a commercial, he had a creepy ass smile on, and then rich nash saw him and moved away

I still can't believe Kovalev. The guy was amazing - he'd get the puck, skate around about 3 or 4 guys, pass it, get it back and repeat. All the time dipsy-doodling and twirling and God only knows what else. Its amazing to watch.

I think the Senator given Cheechoo a lot of chances more then they would anyone else Cheechoo is a great guy who trys hard every game but he is not helping this club, even PM said today it's over for him, time we move on this club is doing very well right now we need some one that can keep up with this club skating.

Guys, I am the biggest Sens fan in the world, but we all have to agree with Pierre, Nash was by far the best player on the ice. He gereated so many chances, killed penalties, and was physical. I agree that Pierre over dramatizes the best players, but he was good last night. he did praise the Sens as well. Pierre got it right last night. Ruutu was excellent in his role last night as well.

Anonymous said...

i could see pierre mcqguires boner for nash from the 300th level

Chris said...

Cheechoo is what he is, a slow very hard working player. He's not the same player who scored 56 goals and I think Clouston realized that now. If he made much less money he'd be a decent 4th liner somewhere, possibly here.

He was skating much better yesterday, he's not quite as slow as he's made out to be.

Anonymous said...

Guys, PM is right on the money. They are rick nash's columbus blue jackets. Without him the franchise is gone within 2 years. And he was the "monster" last night. And he should be on our top line at the olympics. He's a beast. It's okay, who gives a damn who's the "monster, we won.

All this Pierre McGuire bashing is a bit much fellas, not that I have the hots for him...but you have to like his passion for the game.

Good game by the SENS last night, hope we can ice a full team in a couple of weeks and see what they really look like when firing on all cylinders. This upcoming 5 game road trip is going to be tough.

Dave Young said...

.... and yet they scored a power play goal last night, scored with the extra attacker, and had a powerplay goal in the game against the caps?

I dont think the powerplay is a problem anymore to be honest.... its just we dont get many

Andrew said...

Jermie...he had his chance, and he proved why San Jose tried so hard to give him away. He's useless, so stop pretending like he's more than he is. BM knew what he was getting back when Wilson had the balls to force him on us. He is what he is. He works hard, skates like a Timbits skater and can shoot.

Anonymous said...

dude i totally agree with the dumping of the puck on the power play , theres no use for it

tho we wouldnt have to do it if we had

RICK NASH!!!! lol

Engin said...

Just when you think Pierre McGuire can't get anymore idiotic. He finds someway to do it. Winchester and Eillott were the monsters not Rick Nash.

Mike said...

It's funny I don't hear Pierre McGuire pumping up the leafs and Brian Burke as much. In the pre-season he was all over how much the leafs have improved, Brian B. has them turned around, and the rebuild is ahead of schedule, everyone should look out, he said. Now that the leafs suck, Pierre hasn't said a word, what a front runner.

As soon as the puck was dropped to start the game, I noticed that the SensChirp lineup was totally revamped by Clouston !!

Looks like he is getting to have his trios sticking together as a line .

Once every injured player is game ready , his 4 lines should be as follows :

Michalek - Spezza - Alfredsson

Foligno - Fisher - Kovalev

Ruutu - Kelly - Neil

Regin - Winchester - Shannon

Spares will be Cheechoo and Donovan

Clouston will have to tell Cheechoo that other players will take his position !!

Don't get me wrong, Nash is one of the best offensive threats in this league and with his explosive speed he made all of our D look ridiculous last night going wide. With that said, Pierre had to have had his eyes closed during that game because if it wasn't for Elliot or even Mason for that matter the game wouldn't have been the same so IMO Elliot should have gotten the Monster of the Night.

I didn't see Regin play in the last 2 periods so my thought is that he's another casulty to or list of injured players.

Great game by Spezza. You can still see he has trouble handling the puck but good to see him bring the Sens back into it a minute or so after Columbus took the lead.

Where the hell was Michalek tonight? For the first time this year he was a ghost out there.

As for their PP they have to take Picard OFF THE ICE! F#%* this guy is bad. How many passes did he miss in the offensive zone not to mention that wide open net he missed 3 feet wide. They should play Alfie/Kuba and Shannon/Phillips at the points and have Spezza/Kovalex/Foligno and Fisher/Cheechoo/Michalek but that's just my opinion.

Anyways, that was a huge two points last night! The way the goalies where playing it was anyone's game.

Go Sens Go!!!

hey now woah right there , this is not a bashing of rick nash at all , the guy is phenominal , and a beast, deffinatley NOT inconsistant , and is a brutal force for us this year in the olympics...

this is a bashing of mcguire, like im sorry but he just went off like crazy , and anybody that saw him before he got cut off at commercial has to admit it was pure hilarious!!!!!nothing to get mad about , just something us sens fans can joke about and laugh at in the future....bottom line- pierre mcguire is a freakin joke!!!!

ELLIOTT was our monster ppl , one of the nhls 3 stars last night(i know there was only 2 games) but if you look at him and luus stats , elliott beet him by 1 in every category....

me being a sens fan and living in bc , i get abuse from the guys at work , so i will not let this down for a while MWAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
