Whacky Night at SBP

Just on my way back from what had to be on of the weirdest games played at SBP in a long time.

Heroic goal by Phillips at the end but its too bad they couldn't grab that extra point.

Lots to talk about tomorrow though...

The third was a rollercoaster of emotions man, but I guess it wasn't meant to be...

Good character game from the Sens. One of the hardest point they will earn this year.

Go Sens!

After an extremely horrible first period, and a bad second one, I am very surprised and pleased we walked away with a point. Cheered so LOUD when Phillips scored with 1.6 secs left.

Thanks to the refs for keeping the 15 Nashville fans happy back home! Sloppy game by the Sens!

PICARD IS TERRIBLE! 2 goals and an assist for the other team, what a knob! Kuba should hurry up and take his place.

Anonymous said...

AROU!!!!!

Anonymous said...

i think its time to bring lee up until kuba is healthy. Were forcing carkner to play too many minutes as picard and karlsson are a liability in our own end.

I love karlsson, but hes not ready yet, send him down for a while to get his confidence back.

...and i already understand hab fans, kovalev is one of the most frustrating player to watch

but great game by the big rig and a-train who continue to be our mvp's. Spezza also had a great 3rd period.

Well, anyone who stayed long enough to see the third period got their money's worth. Sens never gave up -- a great sign, and something we rarely, if ever, saw in the last two years. Sure, we should have beaten the Preds -- they're not a very good team, and their top scorer was out of the game. But I give the Sens full marks nonetheless.

We were entertained (in the third period, at least), and they made me forget the first two periods, when the Sens were alternately completely asleep, or standing around like they were waiting for a bus.

Heck, in the first two periods, they played like Oprah -- too many giveaways.

But that third period is worth remembering. Let's hope the Sens play like that for 60 minutes against the Bruins on Saturday.

Go Sens!!!!

Leclaire is useless. Stupid trade by Murray - would much rather have Vermette. Lalime wouldn't have let more than three of those in.

The Real T-Bone said...

LeClaire stole a point for us tonight for sure... gotta love that guy... he's a bit scary to watch though in that every time he makes a save, he picks himself up off the ice like he just tore about three major muscle groups... just his style I guess... we played like crap but didn't give up... which is great to see!

Engin said...

Sucks that we lost but it's nice to the Sens showing character and fighting back to get at least a point. Leclaire was the main the reason why we got a point.

Anonymous said...

#1 - picard is absolutely useless

#2 - worst fans in the league...phillips scores with a second left SHORTHANDED to tie the game, and the camera pans on crowd and half the people are sitting down with no expression at all...what a joke

UNREAL third though boys, way to not give up.

Anonymous said...

They may have lost, but that third period was tons of fun. Showed lots of character to get the point after being down 3-0. Bring on Boston!

To Anon at 11:14 PM,

Completely disagree with the comment about the fans. It was disappointing that so many people checked out but 95% of the crowd was on their feet after the Phillips goal.

Anonymous said...

i was there for this game..... BEST GAME IVE SEEN AT SBP.... even tho it was a loss, Sens played great at times, and horrible for the majority ahahah im happy with the single point... GO SENS GO

Anonymous said...

Sens fans are the worst because they do check out early. Is the extra 10 minutes in the parking lot so bad that you wouldn't want to wait until the buzzer?

How good are Leclaire and Regin? And what about Neil's game tonight?

lapointeric said...

B.S.!!!! No one was cheering when Phillips scored!!! We sounded like 20,000 fans, and there were probably 10,000 left!!!

Shame on those who left though.

Dave said...

Olly, what bridge did you crawl out from underneath of?

Aside from that, although I only saw the first Nashville goal and then went out for dinner, in TO, (apparently the Montreal game deserves 5 of the 6 TV's and the Ottawa game deserves none), I am happy to see Ottawa battle back after a horrible first goal, and from what I hear 2 others set up by Picard. Don't want to hate on the guy, and I don't think I can, seeing as I didn't watch the game, and the first goal was a mistake which all defencemen make at one point or another.

Overall I am happy with the one point, and all I can say is that I wish I could have watched the game so I could give better insight into the game, also I can't help but hope Spezza pots one soon, the guy deserves it.

Picard needs to get out of town, ASAP! just brutal, he's terrible, he's meszaros 2.0, and he's like a downgraded version

Anonymous said...

Why does Clouston like Shannon so much? I don't think he would be manning the point on any team in the leagues PP except here.

James Ray said...

One bad period lost us the game, but a very hard earned and well deserved point. I love the character and determination Ottawa showed tonight.

How bad did Picard and Carkner look tonight. Very lazy penalty by Carkner in OT... I dont know what he was doing all night but he wasnt playing his game and keeping things simple. Too many bad pinches and plays. Stick to doing what got you the contract extension.

Anonymous said...

I'll say it once more, SENS NEED TO GET A TOP 4 DMAN to remain competitive in the East.

We are lucky to come back at all tonight....

Karlsson, Picard, Carkner are all AHL caliber...

Engin said...

My God,

You Leafs and Habs fans have some fucking nerve to come here post to trash our fan base. WELL NEWS FLASH, your teams have the shittiest fan bases in the nhl. If your teams would lost a game in OT after coming back. You would've booed your teams fucking asses till the cows came home.

The fact that your stupid fan bases keep paying for a shitty product for a long time has lead to both franchises going through long cup droughts (16 and 42 years respectivily). Who has the worst fan bases in hockey? Your teams need to go through a fucking 7 year rebuilding program where you top 10 picks in each in every single year cause your farm teams are shit. But your GMs are to fucking stupid to realise that.

now we know why Carkner was free to be signed...

Anonymous said...

What happened to Cheechoo? Was he benched for the entire third or was he injured? He only played 7 minutes or so.

Anonymous said...

not much to discuss. The team came out flat. Picard looked worse than an OHLer, Carkner was below average (see below on that thought), dumb penalties and terrible turnovers.

About Carkner; I am not going to rag all over the guy, he has a great start, but its just a start. I think his signing was premature and was a jump of the gun. This isnt because he was on the ice for 4 goals yesterday and took a STUPID, STUPID penalty in OT, but because the guy could never crack an NHL lineup for 10 years and I still think he has a lot to prove. By this time next year, he will be the 7th D-man or an extra forward, guaranteed. THere is just too much talent in the system or about to make the jump for him to keep a top 6 spot, I said this while he was having a good start too. But at 700k per year, it's not the end of the world.

Picard showed yet again that he is not a good D-man, he was pretty much benched as soon as Ottawa scored and even though he has had an OK start, he showed last night that he shouldnt be here and Brian Lee should. Karlsson looked good and so did Campoli, very solid in both ends.

Bottom line, it was great to see the extra point Ottawa got, which could in the end be HUGE come April, but a sloppy game where the screws certainly have to be tightened. Lets just hope it was the layoff that led to this game...

@ Olly:
I'd almost take your opinion seriously if it was so painfully obvious that you're a troll. How can you possibly say in your right mind that Leclaire is useless? C'mon dude, use some common sense please before just shooting off your mouth with something so illogical as that statement.

Mike said...

@ Anon 11:36:
Picard has a bad game, and you're already trying to put together an angry pitchfork wielding mob to force him out of town. Players are going to have a bad game here and there. Nobody's perfect 100% of the time. It's early in the season, so mistakes are bound to happen. If it was February/March, then maybe I could understand the mentality. As it stands, you come off sounding completely irrational.

Tyler said...

WOW. i'm baffled by sens "fans". whoever is criticizing leclaire after that game better give their head a shake. 1. he has been awesome so far this season. 2. that loss was in no way his fault. this loss was because of a flat footed first period where we gave the puck away far too many times, and a third period where we took too many penalties.

sens fans need to have much more confidence in this team if they truly are fans. you can't win every game and selling our team down the river every night we lose is the worst thing we can do.

i cannot BELIEVE the people who are flipping out after this game. have some loyalty. have some respect for the game. we will be a good team this year just the way we are.

GO SENS GO!

Ross said...

Clouston sure does have a boner for Shannon, I still fail to understand why he of all people is quarterbacking the PP...that experiment can be declared failed at this point i think. I've been waiting for Picard to show his true colors, this is why i hated the guy last year...put him on the waiver wire to get him down to Bingo, bring Lee back up, at least Lee isnt a constant liability. And how many dumb penalties can a team take in the final 5 minutes? ridiculous....
On the plus side, Leclaire is his usual great self, Spezz finally got rewarded with some points for all his hard work this season, and
Peter Regin hasn't missed a beat as a result of that little injury he had. I barely had time to be disappointed in the third period each time before they'd tie it up! fun game overall!

Hax said...

Ease up on Picard. First goal was a mistake but soooo many defencemen make the exact same mistake all the time. Picard just got burned that it actually tipped in. Second goal was pure bad luck - he was in the right spot down low and BS luck that it went in off him. Third goal was a brutal give-away to cap off a brutal period, but with a little bit of luck it would have still only been 1-0. He's played better lately and tonight was just a bad game.

Not that I'm in love with the guy, but most of the negative stuff that happened around him was bad luck combined with some poor play.

Anonymous said...

All of you Picard Cocklovers need to sit down. This guy has been underachieving for a while now. Ottawa needs to get a Pronger-like Dman, because with their current D lineup, its going to be mayhem in their zone every night...the A-Train cant do it all himself! Picky is too slow, too soft and seems to have little hockey sense. Waiting for Coach to make him a healthy scratch for Sats!

MrWhite said...

To the Fan Who are calling out Carkner and Picard.....WTF? It was one bad game by them against 7 REALLY good games. Settle down. Let's see how they respond on Saturday before we write them off as AHLers....even Alffy has a bad game once in awhile...82 games people.

Sacul said...

Tough crowd, eh? The Sens almost pull off a miracle against the Preds and the evil Mustachioed Zebra #7 (he was the tougher one to beat) and still half the posters on here want blood.
I don't think any reasonable person was thinking Picard was the next Scott Stevens or that Carkner was Bobby Orr with 8 years of AHL practice. These guys are bottom pairing D-Men that had terrible games. The problem is between the ears...they just were trying to be players they're not. Hopefully they can bounce back quickly and everyone can put the pitchforks down. Philchenkov had a really good game and Picarkner sucked. No reason to panic there.
As for needing a tough D-Man for the top 4....well...DUH!!! What was your first clue? There is a salary cap in place, ya know? If Kuba can get a crotch alignment at Crappy Tire and get back in the lineup, then the Sens can continue covering with the patchwork crowd for the other D-spots...like almost every team in the league. Maybe around the deadline, BM will be really lucky and find a rental to skate with Kubie Dubie Doo and give the team a solid top 4.

Panic not...the roster (including the D) is better than most teams in the East. BM and Clouston have got things under control.

mdgibson said...

That was the most disappointing first two periods followed by the most exciting period. Shame the penalies killed us.

Despite the score, Leclair kept us in it. It could have easily been 12-5 had any other goalie been in the net.

Pickard's play made be want to vomit and Kovi was useless. I sure hope there is no NTC in his contract. I was really excited when we signed him, but now I'm just disapointed. It just seems to me that he never really cares if the team wins or loses. He just goes out and plays, no competitive spirit.

That said, the game was an emotional rollercoaster, shame it ended the way it did.

Oh ya, and I hate Bill Mcreary. I don't think I even need to mention why.

Hey Hax and SC,

I cant beleive u guys still like Picard...trust me i hate reading the message from "that guy" that told u so right after a bad game. Anyone notice how much better we played when he was benched and didn't play 1 shift in the third? I loved the comeback, just get frustrated with Picard, guess every good fan had 1 guy that drive's him nuts!!

Great game, we'll take the point.

As far Fans leaving early, i love a game like this when we have a comeback. Guys if you think of it, all the idiots that leave early aren't real fans anyways. Probably got free tickets or some shit.

Go Sens Go

All i'm asking for is Lee to get a chance and Picard to take a rest??

Although Pickard and Carkner had a horrible game, they make a great 5-6 pairing. The problem is they are our 3-4 pairing right now. Despite that and despite last night, they have done a great job filling in for the injure Kuba and the other 3-4 D we don't have right now.

Maybe when Kuba is back, Karlson will feel more comfortable in his role alongside Kuba.

Anonymous said...

I also think it's time to bring up Brian Lee. He's more steady than any of Picard, Campoli or Karlsson. IMO, until Kuba gets back the D should look like this:

Phillips Volchenkov
Lee Campoli
Carkner Karlsson

And whoever that was earlier bashing Leclaire - good god man, he's the only reason we got a point last night, and he's been better than any goalie I've seen in an Ottawa uniform since Tugnutt.

C said...

Ottawa fans are an embarrasment to Canadian Hockey.

From the look of the stands, I wasn't sure if this game was in Nashville or Ottawa.

Quite a third for our Sens! A-train is an all-star. I've never seen Spezza looked so good! I've never seen Alfie look so old.

SENSPuckLuck said...

@Anon 1:27,

Hmmm...and where do you think you can pick out of a tree for a Pronger like D? Who would you trade to relieve 6M to meet the cap? Think before making a statement like that...

Anonymous said...

What happened to Cheechoo?

He only played a few mins of the game.

Anonymous said...

I think Cheechoo was benched for the rest of the game about 10 mins into the 1st cause I didn't see him on the ice for the rest of the game, he might have been injured but I thought I saw him on the bench.

We could of easily won last night had our D not played so sloppy all game and we minimized all the penalty's.
Karlsson actually made some pretty good defensive plays though for once.

I agree though with people saying we need a top 4 Dman, I would say it is our number 1 priority at the deadline.

Anonymous said...

Here is a trade idea:

to Habs: Kovy + Picard

Sens: Cammalleri

Habs' fans adore Kovy for some reason and they are thin on the blue line.

We get the top 6 forward we should have gotten in the first place.

too bad it won't happen.

MC

Andrew said...

I agree another big D-man is needed. Picard should be benched in favour of Lee. Karlsson is looking better. BTW, is it just me or is A-train looking more comfy taking shots from the point since last year? It's as if he knows we are missing that shot, and is attempting to contribute in that regard. Bad first 40mins, but fun last 20mins. Turnovers were out of control last night.

Mark said...

Yes Pronger-like defensemen are readily available at bargain basement prices. Why didn't Ottawa sign one of them? Brilliant take Mensa

Mike said...

@ Anon 1:27 AM:
It's 8 games into the season!!! Can you get that through your thick skull, please?? Mistakes happen early on in the season as players get adjusted to their teammates and the system. By calling for someone's head at this juncture of the season, you are portraying the typical fan MO of being completely irrational after a loss.

And BTW how on earth do you think we are going to land a defensemen like Pronger? As far as I know, there isn't one available and teams aren't exactly giving them away for free either. Which players would you give up in order to acquire such a defensemen, and do so without hindering other aspects of the team in the process? I think you'll find that the answer to that question is NO ONE.

Bottom line: You're living in a dream world; use some common sense next time before posting.

P.S. Anon 1:27 AM, your first statement shows your complete lack of maturity and obvious cluelessness when it comes to hockey. Take a hike.

Anonymous said...

Karlsson had his best game of the season imo. Only 1 defensive gaff and showed some offensive brilliance (1 assist too).

Leclaire did eveything in his power. There was only one "bad" goal, the second. All others were tipped, rebounds, or no chance.

Even before Spezza got his assists, I thought he played one of his best games. He was skating hard, defensively responsible, hitting, everything we've been asking for the past 4 years.

Kovalev flat out didn't care to show up. His lack of intensity and mental readiness was evident all game long. There was not a single redeeming quality to Kovalev's game and he owes it to himself, the team, and the fans to come out with a substantially better game on saturday.

Anonymous said...

HMMM...anus 9:09am, I didnt say we had to pay for D-man exactly like Pronger but get a guy that plays physical and has some size on the rushing forwards. Right now this team has a huge problem stopping the rush. Our Dmen collapse to the net and have an enormous problem clearing the puck effectively. This is where the weakness lies on our team. DEFENCE! They hung Pascale out to dry last night against an underachieving team! The Sens will get roasted when the start to meet the stronger teams in the league. I said I would like to see some moves made on D, I know its difficult to move salary, its just something id like to see in the future so dont come on here shooting me down fuckface!

Not hating, but Picard does look kind of slow for a potential PMD. I'm ok with packaging him up or campoli or any of 'those guys' to make room. Carkner had a bad game but we know he's slow and he knows his role...so i'm not going to get down on him. They need to pair him with someone with a little better defensive skills and they could be a decent shut down. Maybe Karlson and Vol, and then Phillips and Carks.

Kuba needs to come back.

Anonymous said...

mike, Lack of Maturity and Cluelessness about the game? What are you talking about? Explain. I just said id like to see a guy with size and plays physical on our D, a guy who plays like Pronger, not a guy with that kind of salaray. Its just my opinion. And that I think Picard is useless. Wow, one bad game and you guys are ready to throw Picard and Carkner to the sharks.

Before going into last night's game, they were leading the team in +/-.

After the first two goals went in off Picard, you could tell that he was losing confidence which then resulted in the third goal on a goofy giveaway. Carkner wasn't really that bad but was unfortunately on the same pairing as Picard. His only fault would be taking a penalty in OT (seriously, the refs called that in OT??).

How come nobody is mentioning the coach? We got caught with too many men on the ice, almost got caught a second time, and at one point they played almost a full minute with only 4 skaters. Wake up!

Is it just me or is was it like the fifth TOO MANY MEN ON THE ICE penalty for the Sens last night. This should happen very rarely not 5 times in 8 games....Sens have been getting away with a lot of interference and hooking since the start of the season. It caught up to them last night...better get that fixed or we'll have a hard time.

Either way a winning record is good enough for me!

Hax said...

Regarding "Cheechoo-gate" - who do you want him to skate with when his two line-mates are not skating?

Though I am curious where he went last night. It's one thing to give Shannon a few of his shifts for more speed on that line, but unless he was hurt I don't see why he was benched. He seemed to play okay to me (and has been so far - notwithstanding his lack of goals).

Picard sucks, you guys need to realize that, he's always sucked, i don't know what Murray saw in him, but whatever it was is clearly not showing up in games. He's another Meszaros, get rid of him. We played way better as soon as he got benched.

I have no problem with the Carkner penalty. If he let the guy go, it's a two on one and probably in the net. In the heat of the moment he made a snap decision that he would prefer to give the PK a shot rather than let them go in on a 2 on 1. Sometimes you have to take penalties like that and they cost you.

Hax said...

With respect to people staying to the end - I think regardless of how crappy it is to get out of SBP after a game - you're there to watch the game, watch the whole game. If you're pressed for time or need to get the kids to bed fine, but really you're not saving much time by leaving with 2 minutes left.

And for most of us, it shouldn't be that painful to sit in the car listening to the post-game show and discussing the game with the people you came with is it?

To each their own, but with a few exceptions there's no good reason to abandon the team before the final buzzer.

Anonymous said...

With all due respect to Hax, our car has people from Gatineau, Gloucester and central (downtown) Ottawa.

We are going to leave with 10 to go, sometimes 8 to go so we can beat the traffic. We can catch the rest of the game on Team 1200 so no sweat here.

As for the game, Leclaire has got to keep the GA to 1-2 per game at most or this team isn't going far. Picard and Karlsson and Carkner were brutal all night.

Spezza seems to finally be rounding into form, good on him.

Anonymous said...

I smell BS! regarding the FAN BASE. I have friends that are season ticket holders in Calgary and they have been to a few sens games while visiting! That was an exciting finish to the game last night, but the Sens should be embarassed. They played a team with injury problems that played the night before (back to back on the road). The Sens were awful for two periods, no jump, no drive, no life. And our power play SUCKS!!!!!

Hax said...

Anon 2:21 - totally valid reason to leave early if you have to. I'm more thinking of the people that live in the west end and have no real reason to leave early other than that they have given up on the team.

And while it might not be what you meant, Leclaire had no chance on most of the goals last night. I'd love to see hockey have some sort of "earned GA" or something since GAA is sometimes misleading. How many goalies did Jacques Martin make look amazing? And how inflated are some goalie's GAA when the team in front of them is giving up odd man rushes all night long etc?

Glad to hear from the Calgary fans that our arena is not that bad. But the empty seats and people yelling "shoot" to a guy pinned against the boards in the corner can be frustrating still.

Anonymous said...

I saw it mentioned I think above, but Clouston really needs to tighten up the too many men things. Ultimately that call falls on the coach, he's responsible for that. It's been happening more than normal lately and at this level it isn't acceptable, especially when it puts the team into a 5-3 situation. He was well known for doing this in Binghamton and it was a common complaint of their fans. I love him as a coach but that is way too sloppy.

Mat said...

Wow! People need to settle the fuck down and appreciate the battle we were given last night.
