Senators Edge Panthers

(UPDATE 11:16 PM)- Just caught a bit of the Clouston post game media scrum and he said that it was an elbow injury that Volchenkov suffered late in the game tonight. Much prefer that to a shoulder injury but we will know more about his status tomorrow.

The Ottawa Senators started their mini road trip with a solid 4-3 victory over a struggling Panthers team in Florida.

The return of Filip Kuba paid immediate dividends for the Senators after his point shot was tipped in on the Senators only power play of the game. Kuba's presence also seemed to help the game of Chris Campoli who had his best outing of the season. Kuba and Campoli each registered two assists.

I would assume Kuba would have had more of an impact on this game if not for a huge imbalance in the penalty calls. The Panthers had seven power plays to the Ottawa Senators one. Normally thats a recipe for disaster on the road but the Senators were able to cling to a one goal victory.

Daniel Alfredsson was solid all night and continued his strong start to the season. His line was the Senators best on the night and kept the Panthers hemmed in their zone for long stretches in the third period.

Pasca Leclaire left after the first period and was relieved by Brian Elliott. Early reports are that Leclaire is still struggling with a bit of the flu. Should know more on his status tomorrow.

More in game line juggling saw Cheechoo again bumped off the Spezza line in favour of Nick Foligno. Cheechoo took a couple penalties early in the game but seemed to get better as the night wore on.

Senators are back in action tomorrow when they pay the Tampa Bay Lightning a visit.

Unbelievable officiating. Do we just have to sucj it up and accept that the calls will always be lopsided against us? Anyone have the numbers for this year?

Lucky for us, the McCabe goal (ours) was the difference.

7-1 minor penalties? Wow.

I don't often say this, but I really felt like the refs wanted the Panthers to win that game. Probably didn't reckon on the Senators PK being as good as it is... :)

A bit sloppy, but we'll take it.

I agree with SC that Campoli looked much more composed playing with Kuba. I think the line juggling of Cheechoo also had a part to do with the fact that I did not see Donovan after the fight, I think he was injured....

And as for Kovy... (sigh) watching alfreddson work his ass of and relay to the back of the net while Kovy was in front and to the right of the net, only to see him just effing stare at it because he could not be bothered to skate hard to beat the Panther defender who was farther away, is as infuriating as always.

I agree with previous posters that 5 mil for this guy is a JOKE.. especially when most of our success this year has had little to nothing to do whith him.

Ya I feel bad for Cheech, took a couple of tough penalties, but I agree he looked better as the game went on. He actually looked like he had a little speed tonight...I really think clouston needs to stick it out with cheechoo, I have a feeling if he pots a few goals he could get hot..I'd like to see him , spez and Michalek have a little more PP time and see if Cheech can get it going...

Did you happen to see what happened to Volchenkov. He went funny into the net diving during that last period and then Carkner was paired with Phillips the rest of the period. Hopefully it is nothing too serious. Any information?

I liked the game and I liked the way Clouston coached. Elliott did well given the unexpected playing time.

I'd be willing to trade Cheechoo for Horton.

Dear God, why was Neil on the first line for a time in this game?

Uninspiring effort, but we got the W nonetheless.

nice win although I had to watch it TSN2 I tried putting teaam 1200 but it was like one min delay ?

Any news on Volchenkov ?

whoo! good game sens!

just gotta stay outta the box.
hope volchie is ok. if not bring up lee??

and leclaire get better soon... it feels good having two solid goalies. it doesnt matter to me whose in net because i believe in them both.

Hax said...

MB - Because Neil doesn't kill penalties.

Sometimes sloppy game, but plenty of positives to take away. Hopefully Leclaire and Volchenkov are okay. I hope they let Cheechoo find some life on the top line - if we can get him firing there it makes a huge difference to our depth.

Alfie did contribute a lot again tonight, but he seems very slightly off this year - not as crisp as we're used to. He's working hard and still contributing a lot, just seems like he might have some nagging thing going on (or I could be totally wrong).

As for Kovy, THAT'S HOW HE PLAYS. He picks his spots. I totally agree that it can be frustrating, but he's never going to remind anyone of Fisher or even Alfie. Try not to let it get to you - we knew what we were getting and he'll get his goals.

Horrible broadcast by the Florida network...camera work was the worst ive seen. Picard is garbage.

I am a new Sens fan x Montreal, but whats with the broadcast in this town I watched it on TSN 2 that wa painful

it was the Panther feed from Fox. No wonder there are no hockey fans in the sunshine state

SVEN said...

Regin up to the Alfie line, Kovy and Cheechoo together on the third. I like Foligno with spezz. Fortunate to get the win tonight hopefully better tomorrow.

Hax said...

While the Florida Panthers broadcast team was pretty painful, I do like to hear the "other" team broadcast from time-to-time to see what they say about our guys. They seemed to think getting Michalek for Heatley was a win for Ottawa (no mention of Cheechoo). They had high praise for Leclaire while he was in there as well.

Besides, no matter how bad the camera work is or how little they know about hockey, they're a step up from Pierre the Hewer McGuire. Listening to him felate the entire leaves roster between periods of our game was PAINFUL.

elbow injury to volchie not a shoulder injury.... not entirely sure though.

Elliot was flopping around like a fish. Not much structure to his game as he gave up some nasty rebounds and seemed to be really fighting the puck.

Campoli was considerably better tonight than he has all season.

I think Fisher is owed some mad props despite the fact no one is giving it to him. We all (myself included) slammed him last year for his lack of production. Time to give credit where credit is due as this guy now has 10 pts in 10 games and has a couple GWGs. IMO every poster should have "good job Fisher" at the end of their post.

We definately need more discipline as the penalties are not a winning recipe as mentioned. Good to get the win, but lots of work still to be done.

hambown said...

Sometimes sloppy indeed, though mostly the result of giveaways in the offensive zone, which is not so bad. Good pk tonight.

Positives: Kovy,Fish,Alf were dynamite tonight. They had lots of chances, and had a quick and wide moving cycle on several shifts, effectively hemming the Panthers into the defensive zone and generating a lot of scoring chances. Kuba's return was important, our defense looked better tonight. Campoli looked much better all around, with timely pinches, better defensive coverage and crisper passes. Elliott's play was sharp, he was moving around the crease well, and in good position on most shots. Regin looked lively.
Michalek, Spezza, Neil were very good.

Cheechoo looked better. I felt that both him and Kovalev were close but not quite on top of their games. Both created a couple of good chances for themselves that were potentially great chances. If we're patient, they'll find another gear as the season goes on.

Negatives: Picard! I only saw the second half of the game, but I counted at least three giveaways that lead to: a quality scoring chance, a penalty, and an odd man rush respectively. This guy has to get it together, he was the weakest Senator on the ice tonight by a mile.

The officiating was really poor. I counted at least two occasions where a Senator was tripped, interfered with, or held with no call. Then two minutes later the jerseys are reversed and bingo, penalty. Poor.

Finally, I agree with Hax. Kovalev is never going to out-skate and out-hustle people for goals. That's not what he can do. He's a clever 36 year old who will conserve his energy and turn it on when needed. His goals will most assuredly come, he's generating plenty of chances.

Hax said...

I'll give Fisher his props, but I'd argue that I never ragged on him last year personally. Even bought his jersey last year. He had yet another great game and this year it seems to show up on the scoresheet as well - instead of just being fouth star.

Elliot was a little shaky but given that he came in cold I'll give him a pass. He got stronger in the third.

THE BLACK TERROR said...

In case anyone was wondering, Ottawa, has had 36 PP's, and 46 PK's.

I don't know if that margin is excessive, and I don't know if it counts tonight's game, but tonight was definitely ridiculous, and it's not the first time that has happened this season.

However, seeing that PK at 89.1% for 1st in the NHL is heartwarming...

lapointeric said...

Alfie + Kovy worked well tonight... even though Alfie does the dog work.

Cheechoo needs a good bounce... but he looks like a 4th line player out there.

I was impressed with the broadcasters (the feed was horrible), but they at least had some decent knowledge of the Sens...

i really am starting to not like clouston's refusal to lay it down into the refs.
i mean come on, i get his whole respect the refs theory, but sometimes the zebras really act like they are out in the wilderness=BLIND.

this is two games in a row that the refs stupidity has had an impact on the game result for the senators. luckily today it didnt result in a number increment in the Losses column, but it sure as hell messed it up for us against Boston where the refs got their balls cajoled by claude julien's whining stupid face near the end of the game.

sometimes.....i just hope someone takes a real good shot at the refs head by mistake (or intentionally).
gosh

go sens go

FSN had a number of broadcasts with horrible camera work like that last year here in LA. It had some gimmicky name and was just ridiculous with constant ice level, close-ups. You could never get a true sense for the play. Thank god they stopped.

Anyway, not much that hasn't been said, but I thought Foligno was impressive. Unlike a previous poster, I didn't think that Regin did all that much, but he'll have a good game tomorrow.

How long before Mike Brodeur starts posting again and asking for the callup?

Anonymous said...

Volchenkov ... elbow injury? No problem, just order a new elbow. That guy is a machine. He's a robot. I'm sure we can get that part somewhere. I hear Walmart in Moscow may have a few in stock.

Anonymous said...

Michalek Alfie and Fisher are pure hustle. Maybe Kovalev should take note...

Devon said...

Anyone else think find that the Panthers broadcast was less pro panthers. Then TSN was pro Leafs?

Anyway I was a little worried when I look and saw Elliot was in net and not Leclaire. Given his history I was like oh no he better not be hurt. Luckily he was only sick. Shows the guy has a lot of heart trying to play through it.

As for Volchenkov I'm sure he's fine and will be back next game. And Campoli one game does not get him out of the dog house. As far as I'm concerned between Campoli, Karlsson, Lee and Picard. The two better defense man are in the AHL and not playing. My hope is Kuba makes Campoli look good enough that we can trade him and that Lee comes up and out shines Picard and shows him the door in the off season.

Anonymous said...

alright, now we can see what mike brodeur is made of.

Canucnik said...

Hamblown...just who do you think you are...ya watch half the game and you try to hand us this bullsh&t analysis!

Picard plays 15 minutes @ +1, he leads your team at plus 5 by the way. They kill 6 of 7 penalties which breaks #39 and #45...they are statistically your best pair.

#41 was moved off the top line, not played (Benched), then 4th lined...the man is done...just leave him alone! He doesn't need your pity!

So if you cannot be accurate don't say anything at all...Oh ya try watching the whole game sometime!

It's beginning to seem like the NHL is instructing the officials to even out the teams in the standings. By this I mean the teams with only a few wins get an officiating handicap of the teams with more wins. Last night's game and the Toronto-Anaheim game are goods examples, even though ANA had only 3 wins, TOR had none.

Officiating is always horrible, but 7 penalties to 1? Anyone watching the game could see at least half a dozen missed calls on panther players.

Anonymous said...

Devon - yes! The camera work was terrible in the game (it felt at a really low angle), but the broadcasters were decent. Although I didn't enjoy them bragging about the summer-like conditions they have in Florida ;)

Overall the game was pretty good. This is a team the Sens should beat and they did despite losing Leclaire. And although the refs were clearly trying to manage the game in Florida's favour (why is it that the team always up a goal gets the most ridiculous calls while the other team gets 5 free passes hmmm...) the Sens do need to tighten up on the lazy and sloppy penalties.

Geoff said...

I am a huge hockey fan, and watch as much of the game as I can, and that broadcast was the WORST I have ever seen. If that's what people in Florida have to watch, its a wonder there are ANY panther fans. Just brutal.
Hopefully A-train is ok...and the team has a couple of cups of coffee before tonights game.

-I have no problem with Kovalev. Unlike in Montreal when he was expected to be the best player on the team, in Ottawa I think he’s expected to be about the 5 or 6 best player on the team and that is about what he is (Spezza, Alfredson, Michalek, Leclaire, Fisher). Maybe a bit overpaid though.
-Guys like Fisher (as well as Kelly, Neil, Ruutu, Donavan) are better this year because I believe the team has more structure and it is known what is expected of them. I think (especially the guys on the 3rd and 4th lines) they know what their roles are, they are in the proper spot in the depth chart and they are contributing more.
- Send Leclaire home to rest up. Let Elliot start tonight and call someone else to back up.
- If Volchenkov is injuired I’d like to see Lee up. I though he played well last year with Phillips when Volchekov was out.
- The lines are sort of messed up with so many wingers playing out of position. I like Fisher with Kovalev and Alfredson and Spezza with Michalek. It makes for a nice 2 lines. Cheechoo needs to score but putting Folingno with Spezza has 2 LW on one line and the 2nd and 3rd line each having two RW. I don’t know what the solution is.

5 on 5 this game was no contest. When the sens stay out of the box they can play with anybody. people say their pp stinks, but it is hard to tell, they never get any chances.

I take back all the negative things that I've said about Kuba. I thought his stats were inflated last year as a result of being Ottawa's only offensive defenseman. After last night, I know its the Panthers, but he really was a game changer. Campoli looked like the player we saw last year when paired with Kuba. I know I will curse Kuba with his defensive liabilities, but I think Carkner helps out in having much needed shutdown defensive depth. Another observation from the past few games with Elliott. He is clearly not a #1. Leclaire has now spoiled us and I think the biggest key to this season is keeping Leclaire healthy. GO SENS GO!!

F' M. Brodeur. If we're gonna call somebody up we should call up Chiodo.

Anonymous said...

I think the camera angle was so low so the viewers couldn't see that 3/4 of the seats were empty!

I do have to note just how amazing Kuba's pass to Alfie on his goal was...Just insane!

The fact that we haven't heard about any call ups makes me think Anton will play tonight but we will know for sure in a little bit.

On the officiating:
Yes it was lopsided, but if it was the other way around, nobody would be talking about the officiating. People would be saying how florida deserves to be doing bad because they are so undisciplined. Dont be whiners sens fans. That is the laughs job.

On Fisher
He is doing great.

5-2 for Ottawa tonight
Michalek, Spezza with 2, Kelly, Kovalev.
Stamkos, St louis.

Book it!

Sens loose this one in OT, 3-2. The Lightning will play extra hard to avenge their previous drubbing.

Hedman scores tonight!!!
