Lousy Effort in Tampa

Not much to say after that one...

Ottawa dropped a stinker in Tampa, falling 5-2 to the Lightning in the second game of a back to back in Florida.

Ottawa was better in the third period but it was too little too late. Hopefully they can take some positives into the game against Atlanta and more importantly get Spezza and Leclaire back in the line up.

Feel free to leave your comments about the game here

Until tomorrow....

How many times are we going to hear this? The hardest working Senator out there was Donovan.
I was impressed with the Ruutu/Kelly/Donovan line. Our defence needs to toughen up . .

We have to play hard for 60 minutes guys and learn to live without players like Spezz and Volchie when they're out. Cheechoo absolutely sucks donkeys! Can't wait to get rid of that contract.

I'm glad to see our 4th line working hard as usual, if it wasn't for those guys . . . who knows what the score would of been.

Chris Kelly is absolutely useless. Hope we can get rid of this bum by the deadline!

Anonymous said...

Not sure I agree with that statement about Kelly - I thought he played better than most sens tonight.

Cheechoo will be bought out at the end of the season if he keeps playing like this - man he sucks.

And our defence....ouch! Can't wait to incorporate some confidence back there with our prospects coming up (Cowen, Wiercoch, Karlsson) and get rid of Picard at the very least.

Wont be upset seeing a few players gone by seasons end...Picard, Kelly, Cheech and Campoli. Dont expect much from this team this year. But it would be nice to see them make the playoffs. Where has Kovalev gone...didnt see him tonight...or last night or the night before...oh well.

Andrew said...

Kovalev was a complete waste of 5mill. We would have been better of spending that on a top 4 D man. With spezza out, there is a very clear whole at center. Pathetic effort tonight. Alfie showing his age these days too. Murray has spent the cap space not to wisely. Neil, Kelly and Kovalev to name a few.

what happened to spez?

Anonymous said...

Despite the fact the he has no goals thi syear, it was obvious how much they missed Spezza.

I know that it is not fair to dump on the team after a loss, but here are some player comments after 11 games.

The Bad

1 - Picard/Lee/Campoli - OK, i can give Lee a break as it was his first game, but one or two of these guys may not be getting a offer sheet at the end of the year (they are all RFA).

2 - Cheechoo - Absolutely invisible, at that's with playing with Jason Spezza. I don't see this guy turning it around. Stick him on the 3rd line and play Foligno with Spezza and Michalek. Consider sending him to Bingo.

3 - Kovalev - I guess we were warned about his play, but it looks to me that he is floating to often and is indifferent. If anybody should pick up his game with Spezza out, it is Kovalev.

4 - Leclaire - I hear what McGuire is saying over and over again (Leclaire is the best goalie Ottawa has ever had), but we haven't seen enough consistency ... a little overrated so far.

The Good

1 - Fisher - Finally playing like a 2nd line center

2 - Ruutu - becoming a complete player

3 - Alfie - as dependable as usual, no slowing him down

4 - Volchenkov - SIGN HIM!

5 - Regin - A little early, but things look promising

6 - Michalek - Love him.. skates like the wind, can score, and kill penalties.

Others

Carkner - is good for the $$, but he isn 't 1/2 the d-man that Volchenkov is

Foligno - needs more minutes

Phillips - will never give up, but plays much better with Volchenkov

Elliott - hope LecLaire is not out for long

Kelly - very valuable - don't trade him

Neil ran heatley out of this town and makes way to much alone with kelly,

That was frustrating to watch. Nice to see them not fold in the third, but it was far too little too late. If you would've told me we'd have 14 pts after 11 games at the beginning of the season I would've taken it. Let's hope they can jump on Ilya-less Atlanta on Sat.

sensible mac said...

Clearly not a great result tonight.

I think I'll focus on the positives as opposed to the negatives.

First of all...our 4th line! Or should I be calling them our top line? Tonight anyways...

Donovan is always hard at work and earns every second of ice time he gets.

Kelly and Ruutu are quickly becoming 2 of my favourite players to watch this year.

Kelly has been showing some serious speed and determination and I think the Kelly nay-sayers will be putting their foot in their mouth by spring.

When Ruutu dangles, I often wonder what he is doing on the 4th line. What would he look like on a line with Spezza and Michalek?!

Clearly, Kuba was missed while injured when you look at the fact that in a 5-2 loss, it was a +2...go figure! In 2 games he has 2pts and is a +4. Must be doing something right.

Lastly, is it just me of where the the lack of calls against the opposition blatantly obvious for the 2nd night in a row? Not making excused for the team but it's tough to build momentum when you're constantly getting hung all over and nothing's being called.

Time to regroup and heal up for Saturday's afternoon tilt against the Thrasher.

I agree that this team did not put out much effort tonight. Most of the defence looked like they were afraid to go for the body and most of the forwards had difficulty handling the puck.

That being said, I wonder how any team would do without their number one center, arguably their number one shutdown defenceman that plays big minutes agains the top line of each team, and their number one goalie on the bench with the flu. I'm not making excuses here, just stating a fact.

This is not going to be the Sens of a few years ago when they went to the finals. Let's remember that we are still building this team and that we should see some moves next summer to help solidify this team.

Win or lose, GO SENS GO!

Look at it this way, fellas - season after next we'll have that 8 million for cheech and Kovy off the books and be able to use it on some REAL talent. (probably won't have kelly or picard either to make it ten mill) Which could put us over the top if Alfie is still chuggin at his usual pace and two of our young D turn out to be stars...(Cowen is a lock. This guy is a steal at 9th, i saw him play in the CHL this year for the first time and he was incredible) We have a foundation with under 30'ers Spezz, Michalek, Fisher, Foligno, Leclaire, A-train, Karlsson, Cowen and Wiercoch, solid vets in Phillips Donovan and Alfie, and Bryan Murray will only add to it the next couple years with his savvy drafting. He really needs to stop signing FA's though. His glaring weakness.

agreed chirp, it was a stinker tonight. Im really disapointed with Ryan Shannon, i thought he would keep going on the pace he had at the end of last year. Hes been nothing more than a minor leaguer so far.

I think we need a little more consistency in our roster. It seems that whenever we build some momentum, one of our players goes down with an injury. Our team needs to start staying a bit healthier. I am not quite sure how you do that. The only player who has disappointed me thus far is Cheechoo. The guys has done nothing since coming on with the squad. I also think our backend is a little weak. We could probably use another top 4 d-man.

Anonymous said...

wow why don't you actually watch Cheechoo out there...him, Neil, and Regin were SOLID as a third line tonight...quit throwing him under the bus so early into the season. I hate Ottawa fans, I really do. Also, nobody should ri on the team tonight when we were without 3 of our best players.

Anonymous said...

you guys are WAY too negative.

sens lose the second game on a back to back road trip with 3 of their best guys out for various reasons.

played two road games, got two points. mission accomplished. .500 hockey on the road, that's all you want.

next up is a 4 game homestand. they need to get 5 points out of 8.

playoffs everyone, look at the big picture and SLOW THE FRICK DOWN.

PS Kovalev rules, I don't care what you think...

BeJamin said...

They were tired and had three top tier players out of the lineup. Elliot looked tired from playing back-to-back nights. Honestly I'm not surprised at all at this result. There is going to be games like this for all teams in the league this year. We need Leclaire and Spezza back for ATL though because we really can't drop points to teams like this too often if we're going to get our 6th-8th.

Fork Tine said...

Give Cheechoo a break...he only appears to be struggling because he's a slow skater who plays on the perimeter. That's the unique style that he brings to the team, let's embrace it rather than constantly criticizing it.

Anonymous said...

I could only watch the the 1st two periods but I have to say thta Kovalev actually played with some heart. He can play alot better yes but he was skating and taking hits to make plays...kudos to Foligno for going after the guy that crushed AK.

Carkner needs to stay tough on road....where was he last night?

Anonymous said...

How come they always play a bad 1st and 2nd period - only to wake up in the 3rd. Maybe they should simulate 2 periods in the afternoon before the game. Very frustrating.

Anonymous said...

Never mind the game..

I actually think I liked the Fox Sports Florida broadcast more then the TSN Pierre McGuire show.. what with him insulting Ottawa all night and stroking the egos of every single Tampa Player

matt said...

I wouldn't be so hard on Cheechoo if he was earning $1 mill or less, but this guy is a $3 Mill Cap hit.

Anonymous said...

I have been routing for Cheechoo since he got here, he has flashes of talent here and there but his skating really brings him down.

Lately though he has been taking alot of bad penalties, some that have cost us some goals, he's starting to bring the whole team down with him.

I haven't given up on the guy just yet but if he keeps this pace for the entire year Murray should consider buying him out in the offseason. If we lose Volchenkov cause we can't fit him under the cap cause were paying guys like Cheechoo and Kelly etc instead I am going to be pissed.

Anonymous said...

I agree with Anon 10:31. Kovalev does not seem like he wants to be here. Murray will trade him at the deadline for sure if his play doesn't pick up. At least if he would show a bit more passion and effort but NO, we have not seen anything worth mentioning save for a few plays here and there. Total waste of cap space at the moment and probably not the example you want to set for the youth on the team.

Cheechoo needs some more games to work on his speed and gather some confidence. I have a feeling that if he does finally overcome this rut then he will shine from then on. Let's be a bit more patient.

It has been a tough start for Ott so far and the schedule is not helping. This is what, the 3rd season in a row that we are getting the shaft on schedule! I tells ya the NHL has NO LOVE for Sens. The only thing positive I take out of that is that it makes the team that much stronger going through some hardships early in the season. This will be very useful come playoffs.

tcharger said...

Weak effort, but like Anon @12:35 said....we got 2 out of 4 points on the short road trip. Not something to be overly worried about.

Also remember, we didn't have our starting goalie, are main center, and arguably our best defender, I didn't expect much more then what we showed.

Cheech may not be scoring, but I think we have to essentially stop expecting that from him, and write off his 50+ goal season as a fluke(as hard as that is to do). Like the SJ fans said, the guy is all heart, it isn't that he is slacking, he is giving his all each and every shift....unlike someone else.

Kovalev, drives me nuts, wasn't a big fan of the signing when I heard it, still not. Can't deny the guy has talent, but my god use it!

Looking forward to Saturday, hopefully at least 2 of our 3 guys will be back, With Volchenkov I wouldn't be shocked to see him return too.

Such fairweather fans. Most comments yesterday were 'were gonna win the cup' and today its 'i wasnt expecting much out of this team'. It was indeed a poor effort, but given the bad break on the first PP goal and the parade to the penalty box, it was just a game of getting off on the wrong foot. This team seems to roll when they get on the board. We score in bunches. I think momentum may be Ottawa's best player this year and its hard to keep momentum on your side when you're handed (even with Michalek getting awesome shorthanded bids). Given the flu situation in the league and playing back to back nights, losing 70% of the faceoffs without Spezza. It wasn't a true showcase of Ottawa this year. LETS GO OTTAWA!

Anonymous said...

I was looking at the schedule for November...if they don't come out of that month with at least .500 hockey then you can forget about a post-season in Ott again this year...just saying. I don't like talking negative but the standings are tight in the middle of the pack and if Sens can't be better and start winning the winnable games they will be hard pressed to make that 8th spot.

1. * Pittsburgh 20
2. * Washington 18
3. * Buffalo 15
4. NY Rangers 17
5. New Jersey 14
6. Ottawa 14
7. Montreal 12
8. Philadelphia 11
9. Tampa Bay 11
10. Boston 11 11

If your best line is your 4th line, you will get a lost. Donovan may be working hard but will never make you win games. At best he will score 10 goals/season. Any points you get from your 4th line are bonus. Extra minutes you give to Dono will have to be taken from players with better hands. Even if he works hard, HE WILL NOT SCORE MORE GOALS !!!

Your best players will make you win games on a consistent basis. We need more goals from Milan, Alfie, Kovie etc.

Thought Kelly looked good. And as many have said, if he had any kind of touch around the net, he'd be potting 25-30 per season.
Elliot was BRUTAL.
I wonder if the flu is going around the team - not many of them looked like they had any energy out there
I HATE that Downie punk
These games happen from time to time, as long as we get back to how we can play, this team should be fine.

Anonymous said...

You mention Spezza and Leclaire but I think Volchenkov was a key player that they really could have used last night.

Anonymous said...

Were people expecting a blowout of Tampa? #1 goalie, #1 centre, I would argue #1 defenseman so far this year (only because Kuba was out) all missing. The effort wasn't there but they were up against it with this team. Despite the earlier game Tampa is a good team with a lot of dangerous offensive weapons. Anyway, this is a team no one ws expecting to make the playoffs outside of Ottawa, so the odd stinker is still going to happen.

With Spezza gone a lot of guys need to step it up, namely Kovalev and Cheechoo. What is it with this guy, they need to do something to get him going. He's working but he's just spinning his tires.

On to Atlanta. If an afternoon game wasn't bad enough, an afternoon game starting at 2 pm? Who the hell makes this schedule anyway? I guess this was the best way to ensure with 100% certainty Ottawa wouldn't interfere somehow with Toronto's game, even if there's 2 hour delay for some unknown reason, we should still be safe to get the Wilson and Burke soundbits out there, whew.

Chirp,

In the liveblog, you said Spezza's back was the reason he missed the game. IMHO that is a big issue.

Back when Spezza signed the long term deal, I was very concerned about if his back would hold out as long as his contract. IMHO it has been a ongoing issue to more or less extent that he plays through, and accounts for many nights when he seems off his game.

He has been playing hard this season, but I wonder if he will need to back off and pick his spots more because of his back.

How about some positive shit here?! Here's two things I liked from last night:

1) Foligno crashing into Foster after Foster rammed Kovy's nose into the side board? Sick.

2) Ruutu scoring and then going nuts on Downie in the final minute. I loved the "dusting the hands off" motion on his way to the dressing room.

I also side with some of you guys in that we were missing three of our top guys, while Tampa had all their stars playing at seemingly 100% (indcluding the #1 pick from 2008 and last year's #2 pick.) I'm not making excuses, but that will make a difference. Also, Malone played like a GUSTAVSSON. Add Lecavalier and St Louis to the mix and there you go... 5-2.

Finally, I was tempted to email TSN to implore them to speak with McGuire about being a constant douchebag. His know-it-all attitude is really boring, and his douchebaggery levels are through the roof. For a guy who only played pro hockey in Europe, he's got a gustavsson mouth. BUT WAIT - he won two Stanley Cups... as an ass coach... I apologize Pierre. You certainly have earned the right to be the supreme lord d-bag of TSN commentary.

If he can play on a line that can get the puck in deep and cycle it like last night he will find success. Throwing him infront of the net on the PP probly could help him pot a couple goals.

Kovalev I no he is an enigma but I think it is a joke when everyone brushes off his laziness and just accepts it as Oh that is who he is what did you expect. I think it's a slap in the face to the team and the fans that this guy comes in and is the 2nd highest paid player and gives the weakest effort on a game to game basis.

If Clouston demands such a great work ethic (which im glad for) how long before Kovalev gets taken to task? or does he get a free pass so Murray don't look like an idiot for signing him?

Totally agree with your thoughts on Kovalev.

As for posters hating the negativity on this blog, suk it up! As a fan I am fully entitled to my opinion be it positive OR negative. If this blog was all positive posters what kind of discussions would we have? It would actually be quite boring and pointless...you need both ends of the spectrum to have a bit of fun in here and I'm sure JC agrees with this. The negativity on this blog has NO BEARING ON THE OUTCOME OF GAMES so if you cant take what is being said in here then I suggest you create a nice little rosie colored freakin blog of your own so you can keep your eyes closed all you want and at the end of the season, if Sens end up with a mediocre season under their belts and miss the playoffs you can always come back in here and spew all the negatives that you have been secretly withholding.

Anonymous said...

kickin_it,
I agree there are some very negative fans, but I don't understand your mentality of being happy with a 5-2 loss because we didn't get shutout. I also don't understand how some people say they expected to lose because some of our better players were out. That is a losing attitude, when players go out you expect other players to step up, especially with you have the depth that we have. Injuries happen and if we don't have players stepping up, we won't win. There is absolutely nothing wrong of being critical of your team after a game like that one. I'm not calling for anybody's head, but I certainly don't have to be happy about the loss.

Anonymous said...

Kovalev is a winner. A Stanley Cup winner and I for one am wlling to put up with his erratic play if it instills a winning attitude in this team, from being near a champion.

People are too hard on Lee. He's a project and a good one at that.
Cheechoo should be bought out at the end of the year.

As for the schedule, did someone REALLY say they hate the Senators up there? Did you notice how many home games we've had and will have? This is a gift-wrapped schedule against some bottom-tier teams. If we can't come out of November 5 or 6 games above .500 this team needs a serious reality check.

Yeah, we played badly against the Bolts but we'll curbstomp Atlanta and Tampa next week.

If this team misses the playoffs Murrays need to go and the core needs an overhaul.

Anonymous said...

Anon at 12:49 October 30, there is no accountability on this team. Players run the show and they have since Murray was coach/GM. No amount of gametime lost will change that. Alfredsson, Spezza and Fisher are the real coaches.

Anonymous said...

Sens were brutal, but sometimes it is better to be brutal and lose, than it is to lose one like we did to the Bruins. 45 wins will likely get them in the top 8, so expect some games like this. We aren't going to win them all and consistency won't come until the 40 game mark.

First let me start by saying that I am a huge Kovalev fan.

As per the comments about Kovalev and his showing so far this season.

There is no hiding that he has not produced near expectations with 4 goals and 1 assist for 5 points in 11 games, but he also not just shooting blanks. And we all need to recognize that he is on track for 30 goals this year.

I for one know exactly the type of player that Kovalev is. He is a player that needs a lot of ice time and a player that coaches need to beleive in. Everyone needs to understand that AK27 is the type of player that can turn a game around with one shift. Even though 10 shifts before that, you may not have even noticed him.

Kovy is a player that does not waste energy, and is not a grinder. He is the type of player that recognized that a short chip pass through a defenders leg to his centerman is better than trying to grind it out or bust wide of the net. He is the type of player that becomes interested when he is leading the play. He is the type of player that is so skilled, that sometimes his effort appears to be lacking or he appears disinterested. But the bottom line is that Kovy is a winner. He is a Stanley Cup champ, holds an Olympic gold Medal, an Olympic Bronze medal, and is a 5 time all-star, and an all star game MVP. He is pure skill and we are lucky to have him on our team.

I strongly believe that Kovalev should not be playing with Fisher as their games do not complement.
Kovalev should be playing with Spezza and Michalek on the 1st line.

I suggest the following forward lines:

Michalek - Spezza - Kovalev
Ruutu - Fisher - Alfredsson
Donovan - Regin - Foligno
Cheechoo - Kelly - Neil

My bad if it came across that I was happy with the loss. All I meant to say is I as not surprised. I am never happy after a loss nor do I ever want to expect one.

My issue is all these people calling for coaches, GM to get fired and players to be bought out or traded after every loss. That is what gets under my skin.

You said "but I don't understand your mentality of being happy with a 5-2 loss because we didn't get shutout" .....

Please re-read my post because I never once mentioned being happy we did not get shutout or that I was happy with the loss.

Dutch Treat, Lee is 22 years old. Yes that's right 22. Some D-men take longer than others. He is also 6'3 yet only 206 pounds. Wait till he is 25-26. 225-230 before you judge. His NHL shot will come with that size, his puck moving is already good, and he will be much better and protecting the puck once he puts that weight on.
