Back at it in Tampa-Volchenkov Out, Lee In

(UPDATE 11:32 AM)- Brian Elliott will get the start in goal against the Lightning.

The Senators may have picked up the W last night but word is they were extremely unhappy with the officiating, to the point where they considered filing an official complaint with the league. Had Ottawa lost the game in Florida you can bet we would be hearing a lot more about this today.

Ottawa carried the play when the game was 5 on 5 and it seems bizarre to me that the calls would be as lopsided as they were.

So far through 10 games, Ottawa has had 36 power play chances (27th in the league) and been shorthanded 46 times (14th in the league).

I don't know if its just me but it seems like everytime we take on one of the struggling markets in their barn we get the short end of the stick when it comes to penalty calls. While I dont have the stats to back it up it just always seems like we are constantly killing penalties when we go to places like Florida and Tampa Bay.

I hope I'm wrong and we see a little more level playing field tonight against the Lightning.

Anton Volchenkov hurt his elbow late in the game last night against Florida and will not play. Brian Lee has been called up from Binghamton and will play his first game of the season tonight.

There are no details on the injury to Volchenkov but Tim Murray was on the Team 1200 and gave the impression that it's not day to day and he will be out for an extended period of time. He will be assessed when they return to Ottawa.

Hi Senschirp; Is the A-Train elbow injury serious? Thank you

Mark said...

Yeah, Volchie being out hurts alot. Hope it's not long term. SC, did they say what the severity of the injury is?

Good to hear Lee will play... I've been waiting for this. Sucks it has to come at the expense of Volchenkov though, but he won't be out for long, we ALL know that!

As for the officiating, yes it was horrible, but I hope we don't start using it as an excuse all the time (like some other teams' fans seem to like doing... uh hum). We'll have our games where the officiating is good to us, but from what I can tell, if we can win games like this, in which the calls go against us all the time, we are in good shape. Let the team show them that, no matter how many calls they give us, we can still win... thanks to an excellent PK year in, year out!

GO SENS! Lovin' this season so far!

Yeah how serious (length of time) is the injury? Will he be on the LTIR?

Crap-o-rama. Volchie's gold. Very bad news...

Hey Guys,

Clouston guessed it would be a couple weeks but they will know more when they get back to Ottawa.

I think we will soon see the true worth of Volchenkov now that he is out, hopefully Murray takes notice and re-signs the guy already, I don't get the waiting at all.

Ouch losing him for a few weeks will be hard! Although, he is one tough cookie and has played through injuries/bumps before. I bet he will be back quickly.

Is Leclaires leaving/not playing tonight legitimately just the flu?? When I noticed Elliott in at the start of the second I gotta admit I was worried.

In regards to the refs, it has been horrible this year, our games at home that I have been to haven't been called much more evenly mind you.

at this rate...we will have 41 ppg BUT 33 short handed goals!!!

my only complaint is the types of penalties...stop the hooking - start the roughing penalties!

"Let them know your there!"

Word on the street is this is a serious injury, Volchenkov could be out until early December.

He won't be back this week or next.

It would be nice to catch a break, good god! We lose Kuba; Kuba comes back; we lose Volch; what next?
...
oh and the refing...

Bladelife said...

Ouch. Losing volchy is going to sting real bad. Good thing Kuba is back, though. I don't know how great a replacement Lee is for Volchenkov, considering they're totally different types of defencemen. Then again I feel pretty confident now with Carkner on the back end. Big, strong dude, good penalty killer. I think we'll be alright.

I guess Leclaire is well enough to back up? if not, who would be called up from Bingo?

Is Manny Fernandez still available as a FA? TM

So does Randy Jones become a possibility on rentry waivers? I was thinking it might be wise to pick him up before volchenkov got injured. Not really much risk here as this is the last year of his deal and it would only cost about 1.3 mil to pick him up. He would provide a more veteran presence then would youngsters like campoli, Picard, Lee etc...

Thoughts?

Is LeClaire going to be backup tonight, or someone else.

Do you really want someone with the Flu to infect the rest of the team

Andy Nguyen said...

Is leclaire healthy enough to be our backup for tonight? Surprised we didn't recall a goalie in case Elliott goes down.

SC, do you know if Leclaire is feeling better today or not?

James Ray said...

Crap.... at least it isnt his shoulder. Though Brodeur's elbow injury last season was significant.... CRAAAAP.

Bud said...

I heard a rumour Leclaire may have H1N1, is this a possibility?

Too bad about Volchy, but he'll be back soon enough I'm sure (I hope). Glad to see Lee get a chance on the big club.

Go Sens go!

Alfy's line was great last night. Volchenkov will be missed, I hope the SENS can sign him for life, they should be able to get something done as he seems to like it in Ottawa and seems like a team first type of guy.
Looking forward to tonight's game.

Keep up the good work SensChirp I like your blogs.

The officiating problem has been going on for years now. Of course they favor struggling/new markets, remember the 2007 Stanley cup finals? All the new rules went out the window the minute we stepped into the ice against Anaheim.

I am really happy with our teams ability to score this year. Guys like Fisher, Milan and Ruutu are on a roll compared to last season. Alfie and Spezza they are always amazing. If we can just get Cheechoo on the go then we will have a killer team.

As for Kovalev well he will do what Kovalev does. To play or not to play that is the question.

Volchenkov get well soon... same with Leclaire

tonight score, Ottawa wins 5-4

No A-Train ... Hedman should be happy

Kings are reported to have claimed Jones

God help the Senators if they have to meet the cash strapped Phoenix Coyotes???? Maybe we could set a new record for penalties...

Would there be stats available regarding McCreary reffing sens games? I bet that would be lop-sided.

I'm quite happy with Campoli's play so far. He had a tough time with Karlsson but he's been getting better.

Does anyone else think like me that once the puck starts going in for Cheechoo he is just going to light it up? Seems like he's trying to find some chemistry on the team but nothing has clicked yet.

A thought on officiating Sens games: We seem to be a target team to dump penalties on and the rest of the hockey universe does not give a crap cause we are not very well liked outside the Ottawa market, that much we know.

Andy said...

So what are the D pairings tonight? Seems to me that of all the D to pair Phillips with, Carkner is the closest in playing style, but can he handle the minutes and top line assignments? If so:

Phillips - Carkner
Kuba - Picard
Lee - Campoli

???

That third pair looks pretty damn soft. We have to consider ourselves lucky, though - imagine that group but with Karlsson instead of Carkner - the Stay-Puft Marshmellow squad!

Go Philkner!

Anonymous said...

I think it will be Lee pairing up with Phillips and the other pairs will stay intact.
Last year Phillips and Lee showed some chemistry together so why not give it another go.

McCreary has always been really hard on the Sens.

Fork Tine said...

Am I the only one who thinks Lee might be an upgrade over Volchenkov on D?

Check back for my 'I told you so' tomorrow.

SENSPuckLuck said...

@Fork Tine,

Uhhh...yeah. You are comparing apples and oranges. Volch is shutdown and Lee is more offensive. Can't see Lee block shots or dish hits like Volch. You're not logical...

"Am I the only one who thinks Lee might be an upgrade over Volchenkov on D?"

I would guess that you are on your own there buddy, how can you compare the 2 Volchenkov is a shut down guy Lee is not.

Anonymous said...

UPDATE: Looks like Volchenkov could be out for up to three weeks...

Anonymous said...

D Pairings will most likely be:

Phillips- Lee
Kuba- Campoli
Picard- Carkner

Kuba and Campoli both had very strong games last night, so we wouldn't split that up, and Picard and Carkner have played well together ever since the Nashville game when they were both having off nights.

Giovanni said...

Volchenkov out three weeks according to the National Post: http://www.nationalpost.com/sports/story.html?id=2159015

That should give us ample time to reflect on what an upgrade Lee is over him.

Bummer...Spezza's out with an upper body injury. They just announced it on The Team 1200 saying that it is a precautionary thing.

Mat said...

Anon 1:20: I agree. Campoli finally had a solid game last night and its clear Kuba is the reason. Clouston should not alter that pairing tonight. And Philips would be a sound choice to play with Lee, who might be a little out of place in the first few games.

Too bad for Anton... But better now than when we are on the final stretch fighting for a spot. This team needs him.

If Spezza is indeed out for the game, it will be interesting to see what happens to Michalek and Cheechoo. Will Shannon take his place? Or will they put Regin and put Shannon between Neil and Foligno?

Questions, questions...

Go Sens Go!!!
