Update: Meszaros

Bizarre situation unfolding with regards to the offer sheet and Andrej Meszaros. It appears as though the Tampa Bay Lightning have expressed an interest in Meszaros and have said that if the Senators don't trade Meszaros to Tampa, they intend to pursue him (with an offer sheet). The catch is the Lightning don't have the necessary picks to compensate the Senators should they not match the Lightning offer.

Bush league tactics on the part of Tampa, but until they re-acquire that 3rd round pick for the Penguins, Murray really doesn't have much to worry about.

We have too many forwards as is, so unless they plan on sending us Martin St. Louis then Murray should just wait it out and let them sign him, if they can get their 3rd back from Pittsburgh...
Take the picks and run, but I would still rather have Mez signed here to a reasonable (key word) contract.

I knew it was too good to be true.....I was really hoping to get rid of Mez and maybe throw in Gerber for free.....

Don't these people realize that I can't get any work done when there is pending Sens news?

If Tampa doesn't send an offer sheet now, wouldn't it be considered tampering?

Tampa said they intend to pursue him via offer sheet... they didn't say it would be their own offer sheet. They could very well be orchestrating this as a sign-and-trade through a third party team that does have the required picks to make the offer sheet.

Since NJ has been mentioned (and being the worst-case scenario for Ottawa, I get the feeling it will happen), I'll make up a scenario:
NJ signs Meszaros and compensates Ottawa with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd-round picks in the next draft. They then turn around and trade Meszaros to Tampa for a 1st and 2nd this year and perhaps a third from next year, so overall NJ probably sees their draft position improve while Tampa still gets their man.

Or maybe something crazy happens and NJ signs Meszaros then deals him and Zajac for Martin St. Louis and a bunch of draft picks, NJ wins the cup next year (they should be pushing for one more before the Brodeur window closes, after all), and Ottawa's first-round pick is dead last overall.

I can be pessimistic at times.

i would like to see mez. go and gerber. trade mez and gerber for for broduer. just like heaven!

A sign and trade is not an option. Meszaros can't be dealt if he signs an offer sheet. Not by the Sens or by the Lightning, other than to complete the compensatory aspect of that transaction. If a third party team signs Meszaros, he stays there all year.

TB has indeed gotten their pick back from Pittsburgh. Just got a call from a friend who's in the know. Let it begin...
